O
K, here goes. I promised last month that I would talk about myself in this issue. I grew up in the Wild Wonderful State of West Virginia. As a child all I wanted to do is ride, ride, ride. I was known as the kid who could ride a wheelie on a bicycle as far as the eye could see. For my fourth birthday my dad bought me a Rupp mini bike frame with everything except a motor. Everyday I would push that thing to the top of the hill behind my house just to be able to ride it down once. For my fifth birthday he bought me a motor to put in it. I rode that thing so much that the centrifugal clutch would literally fly apart and nearly break my ankle. Finally my dad bought me a Bridgestone 100. I had to stand on a milk crate to start and stop but I loved it. When I turned eleven I got a job and saved enough money to by my own race bike. It was a Suzuki RM 125. I was ready for the track. My local track was called Pyramid Valley located in Lost Creek WV. I loved racing that track, it reminds me of Gatorback. Now I know by this time in my story a lot of you are saying what does this have to do with FTR? Well, here goes the interesting part. I used to get my butt kicked by this girl! Of all things, back in the early ‘80s, guys were not supposed to get beat by girls. I really wanted to say something to her but I was afraid
FTR President Ford Snodgrass on getting beat by a girl - she looked rather intimidating and her 6’2” mother was even more intimidating. So, I didn’t even bother getting to know her. I raced for a few years and joined the Army; then I didn’t ride dirt bikes again for 20 years. Then I found FTR. I started racing again and was having a ball. Then it happened: there she was, that same intimidating little girl all grown up! I introduced myself and asked where she was from. I didn’t recognize her name but when she said that she was from W.Va. I knew I had the right girl. Finally FTR gave me the one thing that I thought I would never have. The opportunity to redeem myself. The first race after that I went straight to the scores and made sure I KICKED CAROL PRESTON’S BUTT! Thank you FTR for giving me back my self respect - Your President, Ford Snodgrass 555A

he last time I raced a dirt bike was at the Gatorback Hare Scrambles in 2009. I borrowed a friend’s CR 250 and started training about a week before the race. I wanted a win and psyched myself up for battle but it wasn’t enough. Women A is stacked - the same talent as 10 years ago - and I rode a little too smart. So, I ended up third, the same as two previous races before that. This month, Lacey Nordle talked about her first win in Women A and learning how to ride smart.

Proposal #2 - Jack Proposal FTR Rulebook: Delete in its entirety Chapter XII Quad Scrambles Rules. Delete “Quad Scrambles Committee Chairman” from the Executive Committee block in the Table of Organization on the inside front cover. Delete “for all Enduro, Hare Scramble, Motocross and Quad Scramble enthusiasts” from last line in 4th paragraph of welcome letter, and replace with “for all Enduro, Hare Scrambles and Motocross enthusiasts.” Delete “Quad Scrambles Rules” from Table of Contents Justification: We now are in our third competition year without a Quad Scrambles Series. There is no prospect of it being revived in the foreseeable future. Previous votes of the Board of Directors eliminated the position of Quad Scrambles Chairman. This proposal aligns the rulebook with current situation. # 2 Taken care of with Allen’s #1 proposal Proposal # 2 In the FTR Rulebook: Delete the block entitled “Executive Director” that appears to the right of the Executive Committee block in the Table of Organization on the inside front cover. In Chapter I Constitution of the Florida Trail Riders, delete all references to “Executive Director” and replace with “FTR Secretary”. Replacement is required in the 3rd sentence of the second paragraph in paragraph 7 (relates to notification of protests), Article IX. Justification: FTR no longer has an executive director. The responsibility to carry out these duties should be specified to an officer of the organization. The Executive Committee can delegate the accomplishment of the tasks to someone other than an officer, but the

responsibility to see that it is accomplished rests with the Secretary. The constitution should not define by name or title outside hired contractors, nor should it create a situation like we had for the just-concluded elections where we could not comply with the constitution because we eliminated the hired position. Mike: second Vote: Unanimously accepted
Carol Preston: Proposal: Allow Risk management assessment for FTR pro-bono. See attachment: “Carol Preston” Allen: second Discussion Vote: 7 yes, 1 no: passed

Jonny volunteered to run a Pit riding patrol for a while, but requested to have the support and backing by the other officials of the event. The BOD collectively agreed to back each other. Kayla Vawter 331
A
fter practice at Okeechobee, Kayla and John Vawter awaited the start of their race with members of the Screw Loose Racing Team. The couple, who live in Zolfo Springs, share the #331 and a passion for the sport of offroad racing. At first, when Kayla met John, she said she sat on the sidelines taking pictures and riding around on a Foreman. Then she caught the racing love bug and sold her Foreman for “a sport bike” and eventually signed up in the Quad Women class. “Going from an electric shift Foreman to clutching was a learning experience,” she said. Now, in her second race season, Kayla leads the points with eight wins and four second place finishes, an improvement from last year - her top finish was a second. “I got a real eye opener because it was my first full season so I pushed myself a lot during the summer,” she said. “I finished fourth overall last season. We got out there and busted our butts this summer. John pushed every weekend; we were always on the bike.” She improved so much that a lot of the girls that raced with her last season that aren’t racing this season are rooting for her to win.
And her competition, Shannon Brening “has been keeping me on my toes,” Kayla said. In the past, the couple raced the GNCC at River Ranch but Kayla said she prefers the FTR races. “The biggest difference I see is that the GNCC is like the NASCAR of all races,” she said. “The atmosphere is so much different; the good thing about FTR is that it’s more family oriented. You can come out and chill with your friends. It’s fun.” For quads, the sport is always developing. “We are getting a lot more riding parks opened up,” she said. “Dirty Foot has a lot of trails for quads and they do have a lot of tracks for the dirt bikes.” During the off-season, the couple practices - out at Lake Placid and Dirty Foot or Thundercross - with Kayla’s brother, Roben Griffin, and the Pipers Chuck Sr. and Jr. “Anybody we can pick up to ride with us, the better,” Kayla said. “We get a couple dirt bike guys out there.” As for the relationship between quads and bikes, Kayla said it’s “pretty good.” “I don’t have any problems with any of them,” she said. “Of course there’s always the ones that do but I have no problems with them. We both like the same sport just different style of bike we jump on everyday and race.” In the future, Kayla said she would love to learn how to ride a dirt bike, “but I don’t know if I’d be too graceful on them. I want a bike just to do the beginning class. I tried to do a 125 KTM just enough so I can touch my feet.” For Kayla, who started riding with “a bunch of boys,” the biggest challenge was learning how the girls ride. “Because I ride with a bunch of guys and those girls are just as fast,” she said. “All of us girls are really friendly with each other. It’s amazing to see but as soon as that horn blows, we’re all against each other so it’s pretty cool the relationship we have with everyone.” The girls are aggressive, too. “We get stuck behind each other and some lappers trying to pass them, we’ll be screaming and hollering,” she said. “We are very aggressive. We’ll holler at them boys to move and try to get them to get over.” And, with a blue background on her number
Kayla V
plate, she does not go unnoticed around the boys. “I think after the last couple of races where I’ve gotten the holeshot I think they’ve kind of realized that ‘Oh, crap, she’s catching up to me,’ and I try to give them respect in practice and get up with a lot of them so when they move over for me.” She’s one to say thanks and nod her head because she appreciate the gesture. “That’s something I worked on in my first season was trying to gain respect from all the other guys coming up to lap me that I will move. It’s nice when they move and I make sure I tell them I appreciate it or see them after the race. I would expect them to do the same thing for me.” Part of her outlook comes from looking up to Jennifer Albright, a Floridian and member of FTR. “I got a lot of opportunities to watch her race and become friends with her,” Kayla said. “I (rode with her) over the summer and learned some tips and tricks from her, which was a great experience for me. Things she told me have stuck with me over some things my husband has preached to me about. Must be a girl to girl thing.”
This season, sponsors stacked up for Kayla, who just picked up Pro Taper. “We’re excited about that one,” she said. “Powermadd is a big one, too, they help me out a lot.” And, her husband John, who stayed quietly busy during this interview but was never out of sight, plays a role in addition to racing Quad AA. “The mechanic himself,” Kayla said of her husband. “Just a personal shout out to John. I gotta give him props for getting the bike running every weekend and pushing me to work harder.” Recently, Kayla volunteered for the Women Quad Rider representative at the Hare Scrambles, so she’s not going anywhere for a while. “I love it,” she said. “It’s a great stress relief. We have a great time doing it. The atmosphere is awesome. It’s addicting. It’s very, very addicting.”

F
ifteen-year-old Lacey Nordle has a nickname at her school where she plays varsity softball in between racing in the Women A class at the FTR Hare Scrambles. “My friends at school call me, ‘Noodle,’ ” she said in a phone interview. “It’s kind of catching on at the race track, too.” A sophomore at Wildwood Middle High, Lacey said she’s the only girl around her hometown who races. “We have 20 acres we can ride on, but it’s just pastures for cows and stuff. We did put a little track on it but it kind of needs to be rebuilt. The jumps are almost down to nothing now because we’ve just worn them out. I think that will be my summer job is rebuilding it.” Lacey learned about motorcycles from watching her older brother, Tim Jr. “I always saw him riding motocross and everything,” she said, “and my dad did it and I thought it was kind of cool. I kept saying, ‘Dad, I want a bike! I want a bike!’ ” Around age six, Lacey started riding on a Honda 70. “My first memory of it would be when my brother had these big sand berms in the pasture and he took me straight out to them and he made me learn how to ride in them,” she said. “I remember crashing in them and having to get back up and starting over again.” [Editor’s note: In 2005, 17-year-old Tim Jr. lost his life when his motorcycle collided with a car on the highway.] Last season, her rookie year, Lacey signed up for her first race after the first of the season. “I got second place at Bartow and then I just went out and won every race there on out that I attended.” Lacey entered nine, winning eight, and was able to wrap up the championship before the last race of the year. That’s when she decided to sign up in the Women A class. “I raced the last race in A just to get my feet wet and get started,” she said, “just to know what I would have to be looking forward to and what I could train on over summer and all that good stuff.” This year, the Women A class started off with “a lot of seconds,” Lacey said before her first win at the race in
e
“It would be nice to be a professional but that’s going to be a lot of training on my part. I’m not really sure on that yet.” - LN Brooksville. “I was ready for a win. (Defending Women A Champion) Kerri Chambers and her sister (Jenni Lamb) have given me a run for my money but Kerri wasn’t there that race,” she said, “so my dad said, ‘This doesn’t count as one of your wins, it goes in the book as a win but once you beat Kerri Chambers then it is a win,’ but I finally beat her last race.” That time, Lacey finished first ahead of Jenni and Kerri, her third win of the season. Lately, Lacey said, she’s fine-tuned her riding style. “I’ve never really trained at anything but I’m really having to start now that I’m racing A class,” she said. “ “I’ve been doing a lot of cornering and learning how to come into corners faster. I learned that it’s not some little game and the lead girls up there don’t play around.” One of the keys, Lacey said, is learning to “ride smart. “I’d get out front and I’d lead and then I’d end up crashing or something,” she said, “so I’ve had to learn how to ride smart, which has made me faster.” As a result, Lacey said she’s not scared to bang bars. “If it came down to me and Kerri Chambers racing for the scoring chicane, I couldn’t give it up,” she said. “I would be so mad at myself
if I let off the gas and let her have it. I know both of us aint gonna fit through that scoring chicane if it comes down to it!” In addition to racing, Lacey plays starting shortstop and pitches on the varsity softball team. Then on the weekends, the Nordle family, including mom, dad, Lacey and her two younger brothers, are off to the races. Her dad, Tim, is FTR Hare Scrambles Scorekeeper so Lacey helps “set up all the scoring chicanes and all that good stuff.” “I like that they’re there for support,” Lacey said. “That’s one of the really good things I like about FTR. Everybody cares for everybody.” With a few races to go, the points are “pretty tight” between Lacey and her competition. “I’m hoping for more wins,” she said. Next season, after Lacey turns 16, she said she’s looking forward to racing an Enduro for the first time. “I raced the Junior enduro this year because I’m not old enough to race the regular enduro yet,” she said. “I think I’ll try one to see how I like it.” As for any future racing plans, Lacey said she’s just going to see where it goes. “It would be nice to be a professional but that’s going to be a lot of training on my part. I’m not really sure on that yet.”
Sponsors: “A big thanks to my dad and my mom - if it weren’t for them, I probably wouldn’t be in this sport.”
