He started the site because he wanted to offer FTR members and other motorcycle enthusiasts a useful place to find unique and credible content. “I’ve been racing dirt bikes for 20 years and I just wanted to spread the knowledge that I know to others,” he said recently in an interview with the editor, “so, I joined the website revolution.”

Along with a blog, the website offers sitespecific content on motocross, vintage, freestyle and offroad racing, including Hare Scrambles and Enduro’s - more than 118 pages of individual content that’s not copied from anywhere else. “That’s one of the biggest dividers from everybody else,” Stuart said. “I’m constantly adding to it and all of those topics are going to continually expand.” At press, Stuart was working on a classified section with information on bikes for sale, suggestions on motorcycle setup and dirt bike maintenance - how to change an air filter and beyond to keep you and your machine performing the best. new print studio specializing in custom motocross and ATV graphics, decals, screen printing T-shirts and vehicle wraps for all promotional needs. Owner Dale Hutto is a “dirt bike kid” - he started racing motocross around ‘94 and quickly ripped through the ranks, qualifying a year after for the Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Motocross Championships (and the next three years in a row: Youth in ‘95 and ‘96 and C in ‘97. Then, he raced supermoto and pit bikes traveling the country before deciding to do something else. “I graduated from tech school with a graphic design degree in 2001,” Dale said. “I did it to fall back on in case I got hurt because that’s all I was doing was racing pretty hard core.” This year, Dale started the company named Dirty Grafix; he said the name was a no-brainer. “It’s dirt bike graphics and it’s dirty and I

wanted to spell ‘Grafix’ differently,” Dale said. He raced one FTR hare scrambles in B 200 at least 10 years ago and was winning by 14 minutes on the second lap, he said, “...until my body decided that I was pushing it too hard and I crashed like five times - it was so hot - I hit my head, flipped over, threw up,” he laughed. (He DNF’ed.) For FTR members who mentioned this editorial, Dale is waiving the design fee on a custom set of Dirty Grafix ($175.) “I definitely look forward to doing another one,” Dale said. “Compared to motocross where you’re wide open from start to finish, I kind of figured out with hare scrambles that you have to get a good start and back it down and then pace yourself, but it’s fun, for sure.” Check out Dirty Grafix on Facebook for the latest.

The Prez Says

FTR President Ford Snodgrass has his sights set on next season. The Prez raced six Hare Scrambles this year and his best finish was second. He’s catching everyone at the banquet!

I

hope to see everyone at the banquet and I hope you all get to read this before the banquet so I don’t sound bad. I know it’s not been an easy year on a lot of people with the declining economy and the changing of the banquet date. I can’t do anything about the economy but I can tell you that changing the date for the banquet was a difficult decision. I will apologize in advance if some of you can’t make it because of the new date. I can only say it was changed with the best interest of FTR in mind. Now, on to another subject: This summer is going to be a very, very hot one and the first race is going to be in some extreme heat so please start your training now and be ready for the heat. I don’t want to see anyone’s season start off with a DNF because you were unprepared for the heat. Train in the heat of the day and learn to hydrate while you’re riding. I’m no expert but it seems like good common sense. So, in closing, I hope to see you at the banquet especially the Super Senior A Hare Scrambles riders (so I can see what kind of shape you’re in). This years banquet should be a lot of fun. I may even have a cocktail. If you haven’t met me in person yet, this would be a great time to introduce yourself. I look forward to seeing everyone at the banquet. I am also very excited to get this season started. Finally, I am healthy.

The Editor’s Beat

Jenn wraps up her first year publishing FTR magazine and looks forward to another year as editor! Braaaup!

T

his special summer issue is packed with content as it’s two month’s worth of material in one. And, as I’m writing this on July 1st, I hope everyone received the magazine before the banquet - if not, it’s because I wanted to print next year’s official competition schedule that was approved in June. Please make sure your name and brand or bike number is spelled correctly in the results, and if not, contact the FTR Business Manager. I’ll tell you what; putting this magazine together is a dream job and I’m having so much fun visiting dirt bike shops and meeting new FTR members. I recently made a visit to Ft. Lauderdale and stopped to interview Kenneth Maginnity about his ride across India next year. He’s raising awareness and money for the less fortunate in India, and I hope our FTR family will support him in his efforts to make a difference - big or small. (Did you know most of the Indian population lives on less than 50 cents a day?) I look forward to following Kenneth on his journey next year and you will be reading more about it. I’m also excited about a new column called “Double Greens,” that’s going to offer a field guide of different dirt bike shops around the state as I hope to build a bit of community for motorcyclists. I recently visited WMR, which is literally minutes off Interstate 95 in Stuart, and was thoroughly impress with the team of operations there. (More on that later.) I received a letter at the end of last year from a woman named Jan who spoke about FTR in the “formative years” during the time when the Croom Motorcycle Park was established. It’s interesting to hear the history and I think the story fits this month. And that reminds me of this month’s feature on Dr. Alex Guitterez. When he started talking about FTR, I was delightfully surprised hearing the details of his story and how we had so much in common. Also in this issue, I snagged a few pictures off Facebook from the 24-Hour Challenge in Georgia. (Next year, I’ll be there running a live broadcast! And, if you have any ideas for me, or stories you want published, send in a note. I can help craft the story, too, if you want. On another note, if you have not renewed your FTR membership, this is the last printed magazine you will receive. Of course, you can always go online and read the archives. But, if you’re old school like me, I more like having something to hold so I hope you enjoy the small steps this magazine is taking.

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order at 9:50 a.m. pm by the president. Role was taken, in attendance: Quorum noted to conduct business. Guests: Joe Smith; George Pollard; Robert Prather; Keith Hedin

Before any other business was handled, the Sanction Schedule was discussed, formalized and agreed to by the group. The Sanction Schedule will be made official at an EC conference call on June 29. It was also determined that the BOD unanimously voted to have the 15th race added to the schedule.

I. Reading and approval of previous meeting minutes;

approval done previously for publication in magazine and website: Jack motion to waive reading of minutes and accept. Carol second. Vote: Unanimous acceptance of meeting minutes/waive reading.

II. Reports: Ford wanted to make it clear that if contacted by David Walker as the Croom representative that we do not talk to him. Jack: Land Use Jack talked about the time/access changes to the Croom Motorcycle Area, explaining that the reason is the lack of funds to man the Croom positions at the park. Jack suggested that the organization needs to decide if it wants to get involved politically to do away with the title fee that we pay for the bikes because the fee fund is getting abused and not being used for the purposes that it was intended for. In his opinion the use of the fund will continue to get abused and the money will not be used to provide grants for OHV trails as was previously it was designed for. Jonny: Budget The budget has been met pretty well so far. We will make it through the banquet well this year. We have no outstanding debt and there is plenty of head tax money collected to fund the end of year awards. There was extensive discussion of the money spent and saved over the past season. *A copy of the profit and loss statement is available online or by contacting the FTR Secretary (secretary@floridatrailriders.org). Deborah: Secretary Still looking to get the donated helmet painted, talked about the other events/raffles that will be going to the scholarship fund. All information is updated on the website for who and where to send the fund money. Magazine is

doing well. We will be renewing the current editor position today. Risk assessment request has been filled. Once Raymond Spudeck signed our confidentiality agreement, we sent him our general liability to him for review. The Adobe Acrobat purchase discussed at previous meeting has been determined that it is not necessary as the magazine editor’s contract covers that responsibility and the editor supplies that program. Membership numbers are holding. Peter: Enduro Chair An assessment of the attendance in relation to the change in the format has proved to be a positive with more interest in the sport. It is the belief that the sport needs to have more in-state Enduros to keep it alive within this state. It is encouraged that we need to support the Junior Enduros as much as we can. He hopes that the clubs make the Junior Enduros part of their events to help promote the younger folks to the sport, as that is the future of the sport. It was also mentioned by Allen that the part of the promotion needs to be educating the clubs on what amount of land actually needs to be in place to have an Enduro and he suggested at least 2,500 acres is all that is needed. Peter also stated that the score keeper for Enduros is open, that he would like to stay on as Enduro Chair but also supports the two individuals that have formally asked to be considered for the position. Cary Hunt and Jeremy Powell.

14 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | June/July 2011

Continued on page 15

Mike: Hare Scrambles Chair Mike stated that it has been a great year for Hare Scrambles and that the schedule had to do a shuffle this year, but all of it worked out well. He stated that Donnie Richardson wants to stay on as the referee, Bill Drymon wants to be assistant referee, Don St. John and Brandon St. John both want to retain their positions and Tim Nordle wants to remain in his position. Tonya Steindl does not want to return to her position and Tim Nordle’s wife has requested to take over. Mike also made mention that the Hare Scrambles Committee has appointed Larry Roberts to the election committee. Ken: MX Chair We have tried to alleviate problems by proposing next year’s schedule over a three-and-a-half month span of eight events in hopes of having more participation without having to compete with other series. They are only using the premier tracks twice. (Reddick, Thundercross, Bithlo, Waldo). They plan on making the MX series work with the advice from Ray Spudeck on the risk assessment results. Ken is stepping down as MX Chair and has listed Carol Preston and Rick Dreggors as two individuals who are interested in performing the job.

III. Unfinished Business:

Carol - Banquet update: The committee is working hard and it looks good. Dudley is not doing Trophies this year, Scott is. Discussion took place in concern of where and how the money was being spent. Several requests were made to have a report of all income/ expenses associated with the banquet be made available to the BOD on a reoccurring basis up to the banquet date, for informational purposes and oversight. It was also established that the Treasurer needed to be kept in the loop and involved with all transactions dealing with the banquet. There was discussion about how the head

tax fund was being handled. Much discussion about the cost cutting/ savings approach to the banquet and the extra awards that are being given outside of the actual trophy and jackets with the head tax money. It was determined that there will be a breakdown report at the next BOD meeting of the income/expenses for the banquet. Comp room and comp tickets: So far the rooms and the tickets are being handled per the rule book. There was a discrepancy in the listed individual recipients and paid positions. That has been taken care of. The Banquet Committee is honoring the established number of comp rooms to be given that was agreed to last year at the BOD meeting. There was a discussion

about comp rooms on the subject of how the hotel handles it and what we have to meet as a group. Ford suggested that someone come up with a proposal to entertain how the comp rooms are dealt with. Until then, he suggested that we go with what was established last season. Again, there were suggestions that the information of how many comp rooms/tickets were given and who received them be made available to the BOD. There was a suggestion that this needed to be in the budget, and it was determined that it is in the budget for this season. Continued on page 16 Carol motion: Motion that for the 2010-2011 banquet, we allow up to 50 comp dinner tickets and up to 13 comp room nights be given. Peter second. Vote: Unanimously accepted.

Cary – update on the Croom Kids Fun Day It slid off the map due to the David Walker item. It will fade away for now until the David Walker situation smooths over. It was mentioned that this would be a Forestry deal with the outside resources doing the work and carrying the name. It was suggested that any interested clubs should let it be known to the Cary or Jack. It would be a great opportunity for the clubs to get public visibility. Ed – update on the Croom banner It costs no dollars to put up the banner. It was suggested that we go with Scott to get the banner made. Ford stated that Carol and Ed get together and set up something to make this happen.

an interview. He smiled an impeccable grin. By day, he’s a orthodontist in Tampa; otherwise, catch him outdoors on the water, training or riding his dirt bike. This year, he signed up in the Vet B class, after finishing fourth overall last year in B Open and second before that in B 200. This year, he took a win and a handful of podiums in a tight points race to the finish; he earned fourth overall as Rodrigo Velez and Sergio Santana, Sr. tied for second behind champion Robert Camp....When Dr. Alex answered the phone on a recent Sunday afternoon, he was just leaving the motocross track in Bartow...

JS: Hey, Dr. Alex...I first wanted to start by congratulating on your fourth place overall in the Vet B class. What are your thoughts on the season? AG: Yeah, it was good. Obviously, I wish I would have done better but I had kind of a rough start at the beginning and had to figure out some bugs. It got better toward the end, but we’ll see what happens this year. JS: How bad of a rough start was it? AG: At one of the races, a vine caught my oil seal and when I was on the line, the bike started pouring oil out. It’s racing. Just racing. JS: So, this was your first season racing the Vet B class? AG: Yeah, I used to race a long time ago and I went off to college forever and I came back and just started racing. I was in C class for half a season and then went to B class and now Vet B so that was actually my third season. JS: You used to race FTR? AG: Yes. I actually am the 1993 Junior A Hare Scrambles Champion...Then, I started college and decided to go to dental school and all of that so I had to put racing aside for a little while. I still don’t feel like I’m as fast as I used to be, but that was 20 years ago. JS: Yeah, now there’s a thing called fear! AG: When you’re 16 there’s really not a lot of fears. Now you have a job and you have to go to work on Monday; bones are little bit more fragile, for sure. JS: Where did you ride growing up? AG: I was born in Puerto Rico but I grew up in Orlando so of course we always went to Croom and back then I did a little bit of MX so we rode at Bithlo, Dade City, Gatorback. Back then, there was a lot of places around town that you could ride. It wasn’t as built up.

JS: I know...did you ever ride at the place by the airport? AG: That was one of the first places I started riding, right by that hotel there...that was about 25 minutes from my house. I remember one time when Mike LaRocco and Team Suzuki were out there riding before Supercross one year. It’s crazy; then, we all started trying hare scrambles and on we went. JS: I remember learning how to ride there... AG: There was always a lot of people out there. Everybody had fun. JS: I know. Now Orlando is all built up Dr. Alex on G2: like you said. I also have to thank Glenn (The riding area is now - I learned a lot when covered with we did that photo shoot. concrete for We had a blast...just parking lots about photography and and hotels.) AG: One day looking at the background I went back, and setting everything -actually I up. I’ve always enjoyed think it was photography and have a summer during college to use it a lot with my - I came patients. He does really home and great work. drove out

there and, yeah, that was it. JS: Where did you go to college? AG: I went to UCF and then I went to Maryland for dental school and University of Florida for a fellowship. Then I went to St. Barnabas Medical Center in New York City for three years.

JS: And then you moved back to Florida? AG: Yeah, I kind of had it in my mind as soon as I got back, I was going to start racing again... after 12 years, I finally got a dirt bike again...I missed it so much. I would come back and ride down here and then go back to school, but I couldn’t really race so much. JS: Did some of your colleagues give you a hard time about racing? AG: They weren’t too fond of it. I still hear about it now. [laughs] But I was riding before I was doing anything. JS: What’s your favorite thing about FTR? AG: I’ve always thought it was great even when I wasn’t as involved in it as I am now joining Suncoast and helping with the Eagle’s Nest Enduro...it’s great; a lot of good things happening for it. I know the economy kind of hurt it a little bit but it’s a great organization and has a lot of really good people. I’ve made a lot of really good friends through three seasons and it’s not as intense as in motocross. People get along - it’s not like the parents of that kid are arguing with the parents of that kid - all the kids are racing and they’re all playing. It’s like a big family. Everybody’s from different walks of life but it’s the same interest: dirt bike racing. So, we all come together and we have a lot of fun. JS: Does FTR compare to your professional life at all - is it the same for an orthodontist? AG: It kind of is. As an orthodontist, we all have the same interest.

I love what I do because I work with a lot of children and a lot of adults, but you get to know the patients throughout the treatment and its kind of like racing, you get to know people and relationships and stuff, but I like the fact that I love what I do because it allows me to do better, I’m not you know so busy that I cant leave the house to go ride my dirt bike JS: Does that mean you’re planning on going to Vet A soon? AG: I’d like to try to win another hare scrambles championship and eventually go to Vet A. We’ll Continued on page 22

see how the summer goes. I hope I’m there but that’s the first row and there’s a lot of fast guys there already. I’ll work on some things and see how it starts. I’d like to maybe win Vet B... this is the first time that I was able to race the morning, and I have a lot of friends in there and we just had a lot of really fun clean racing with each other, and you never knew who was going to win, and it kind of came down to the last race really so it was interesting the whole year. We all got along and we were all there - the top five guys - they’re there all the time. If you look at the top five or six, it really was who was the most consistent and kept it together. That’s really how you win championships. It’s not won in one race; it’s a season for a reason. JS: Do you still ride motocross? AG: I love MX but now as I’m older, it’s just too many jumps and you cant ride a lot and hare scrambles you get to go ride for an hour and a half to two hours. JS: What about Enduros? AG: I won the Enduro Championship in Vet B... JS: I did not see that yet! Congratulations! AG: Yeah, they’re not as popular but now with the new format, some of my friends are doing them. It’s completely different - it’s not a hare scrambles - it’s longer and you have to use your head more and you never know how you’re doing; you may be doing great or doing bad. JS: What’s your favorite? AG: [long pause] Hare scrambles, really, when the weather’s good. I don’t like racing in the dust. I think the Enduros are cool if the weather’s good too and it’s not too dusty and you have friends in your row and you guys help each other. It’s pretty fun, especially when you’re riding 70 miles or whatever they are now. This year I did all the FTR Enduros and Hare Scrambles and some of the GNCCs. [At Daytona Bike week, Dr. Alex finished first at the Florida GNCC, 1st at the Alligator Enduro and second at the Georgia GNCC in Vet B- three events in less than a week!] JS: How are you training this off-season? AG: I like to do a lot of outdoor stuff - motor sports and cycling. Some of the other FTR guys got me into cycling last year and I’ve been doing a lot of that to cross-train, which is kind of the same thing: you get out there with a group of people with the same interests and you cycle 50 or 60 miles and it helps extremely with your fitness; I don’t care what kind of dirt bike racing

you do, it helps your fitness JS: You attended the Perry Mountain 24-Hour Challenge this year? How was it? AG: Yeah, it was fun. I was just spectating and helping out in the pits (with the Action Kawasaki Team). I’m kind of more of a racer. The whole time I’m like, ‘Oh, man, I wish I was out there riding.’ JS: Do you plan on racing next year? AG: Yes. One of the reasons I went up there was to learn and see it. We’re planning a sportsman team next year and working on it already. I’ll definitely be racing. JS: Are you going to the banquet? AG: Absolutely. I’m looking forward to it... because you get to see everybody you haven’t seen all summer. I kind of can’t wait until September, too. It’s a little too hot to be racing right now, even though I was riding today. It’s kind of more beach weather. JS: Do you have any advice for the Junior A riders out there now reading this? AG: Just follow your dreams and really work hard at what you want to do. You can do as much as possible, whether it’s with dirt bikes or jobs or schools, just really focus and determine to yourself that you can do it, and you will be surprised when you can do it.”

Letter to the editor

Editor’s note:

In 2010 approached Jan, after reading her Letter to the Editor on the debate surrounding the Withlacoochee State Forest and activities between motorcycles and horses. The story stemmed from another on Randy Yoho, owner of Dade City Raceway, who applied for a special use permit that would allow a motocross event in a heavy equestrian area. Jan lives next to the Croom Forest, in the midst of both motorcycles and horses; she’s been around FTR since the beginning. And, while she loves motorcycles, she’s not against horses by any means; in fact, her children grew up with horses and motorcycles. But Jan said she can see for herself “how all of the horse people are buying up the land around us (and Croom).” Jan said she wanted people to know about the beginning of the motorcycle park in Hernando County.

H

i, my name is Jan Knowles, I am the wife and in-law to the Mudtruckers Enduro and Hare Scrambles Team from the mid 1960s and early ‘70s. The Mudtruckers were the first FTR “top team” of the year. Hope a few of you remember. I live in Brooksville, a town near the Croom Forest Motorcycle Park, which was dedicated as such in August 1973 by then Florida Commissioner of Agricultural Doyle Conner. On August 26, the dedication of the first motorcycle park on state land in Florida took place. This was the culmination of more than two years of work and cooperation by the motorcyclists, forest people and the state legislature. Most of the people who were involved were present for the dedication. I was there. The day started with a trials event put on by the Florida Trail Riders with numerous riders competing. Then the officials toured the area, ending up at the Holiday Inn at Interstate 75 and Highway 50 that is now known as the Quality Inn. Here we met with

“They think they own the State forest for their own pleasure. I do not want to fight with my neighbors or be in a war, but I feel what I feel about the motorcyle parkand the history.” the focal point of our interest. The officials gathered at the stage area for the dedication at the mine. All the dignitaries where there. Mr. Doyle, the speaker, introduced 8l-year-old Mr. Mountain who worked at Buttgenbach Phosphate Mine in the ‘20s After his speech, Mr. Conner stated that the state of Florida was glad to set aside this area for a park for the motorcyclists and their recreation activities. I hope every motorcyclist today enjoys this park as much as our family has in the past and present. Isn’t it, what in 1973, everyone intended this area to be for? I have many available pictures of the old Florida Trail Riders’ magazines in my collection. I would be grateful for anyone out there who might be able to provide this newsletter with stories like mine of the beginning of Florida Trail Riders for everyone’s interest. I have so many more stories if anyone is interested.

Ask Moto Adam . . . Summertime is here and the weather is hot and sticky. If you’re like me, you need as much seat time as possible to keep progressing or at least stay at the same level. Here are my tips on how to stay cool while riding this summer. Keep it pinned and be safe!

1. Hydrate yourself all week

long. Since your body is primarily made up of water, we need to hydrate constantly to keep running smoothly, just like you need coolant in your bike. Drink water frequently - about 8 glasses per day. Try bringing a bottle with you everywhere. If you stick to this, you will feel healthier and not as tired when it’s time to ride. Guaranteed! 2. Remember to take deep breaths before you ride to

regulate your breathing. Try to introduce this habit in your daily life as well. This helps circulate oxygen and keeps your body running optimally. While you are riding, you should try to maintain this breathing. It will keep you calm, cool and hopefully out front! Gatorade in between motos or riding sessions. Don’t drink too much or you may get cramps. Have just enough to quench your thirst and replace some electrolytes. 4. If you get too hot, take a break. Find a shady tree, relax and open up your boots your feet hold in a lot of heat. Also, take off your jersey and gloves. Sometimes you will get the urge to sit in the air

conditioning. Try to resist this if possible, as it will make you G2 photo: It’s hot! Ride smart!

Chaplain’s “The Dickson Challenge”

osh, I have a lot to share but I will try to keep it short. To begin, the end of each Florida Trail Riders’ race season brings the Perry Mountain 24-Hour Challenge. Ours was a little different this year. On the week of the event, a very good friend of ours passed away. The funeral was on Saturday at 11

“Run the race with endurance, the course that has been laid out for you” (Hebrews 12:1)

a.m. in Kentucky. On that same day, the 24-Hour race was to begin at 10 a.m. in Alabama. The “Dickson Challenge” was to get to Kentucky on Friday evening to visit with the family, attend the funeral Saturday morning, hop in the van and ride 350 miles to the Perry Mountain race site.

On Friday afternoon, 11 miles in Kentucky, the fuel pump decided it would cease to work. We were stranded on the side of Interstate 65 for an hour and a half. I maintained my cool (though it was bloody hot at 3 in the afternoon) and prayed; asking the Lord to watch over us. The tow

feel worse once you get back in the heat. 5. Dress for the weather. Stock up on thinner socks, vented gear and/or vented helmets, if it’s within budget. You’ll have an edge over your sweaty competitors. - Moto Adam Wald, #17 www.askmoto.com adam@waldcreations.com

truck driver was a woman who was very kind and generous. Thankfully, she took us to an AutoZone that had the part I needed. My next prayer concern was, Lord, will we be able to get into the parking lot; will they let us drop the car off; and will I have the means (parts and tools) to fix the problem? Again, God was good. The AutoZone was in a large parking lot connected to a Harbor Freight Tools. What are the odds of that? It took me about two hours to do the repairs. (That also included having to buy a new battery because the old one quit.) I’m sure all you mechanics out there are saying that you could have done that job in 30 minutes; well, not me. Once I lowered the tank, I had trouble loosening the ring to access the cap to remove the fuel pump. Boy, it was tough. I kept praying for the Lord to help me. In desperation, Ragan got on the phone and called one of our

friends at church and immediately they started praying. In less than two minutes, the cap was off. Wow! I wished we had called in prayer support earlier. I had been struggling for about 45 minutes with that endeavor. I think I had strained every muscle in my body. Once the cap was removed, everything went smoothly. The car was put back together. I prayed another quick prayer and turned the key. What a beautiful sound when the motor lit off. I have left out one important component to my story. Don’t think that I’m an expert in troubleshooting my car problems. I should be your last option when you are in need to automotive diagnostics. Nope, I called a friend, Don St. John, a fellow FTR member and a fantastic Chrysler Tech! Many of you know that the St. John Family and the Dickson’s camp together at each race. Don, you are a Godsend my friend! Thank you for being there by phone. After our breakdown adventure, we were so grateful to finally make it to the hotel. I was absolutely filthy, tired, and we all were hungry. After the funeral and lunch, we loaded back into the van and headed straight down I-65 to the Clanton, Alabama exit where I pulled in to get fuel. Ragan and the boys quickly went next door to Burger King to grab supper so we could eat on the way. Not exactly what I would consume before racing, but it was the quickest option. By the time we parked at the race site, had signed in, geared up and sent Ethan out for the first lap, we were nine plus hours behind everyone else. When he left, it was still daylight but the sun dropped behind the mountain fast and by the time he returned, it was almost completely dark. Later that evening he turned a couple more laps with all the nighttime light gear and had a great time. While Ethan was getting some rest, I tried to put in as many laps as I could; it was nothing impressive. Though we had been there only about six plus hours, I was one tired puppy. By the end of the event, the Ethan and Andy Dickson Duo (ORRM Team 1) had moved from 26th place (last) to 20th. We turned 20 laps. Trust me. We had done all we could do. Though the Dickson’s were in survival mode, the rest of the Florida crew did great. To my knowledge, no one got hurt but everyone had plenty of seat

time. It’s always neat to see so many of our FTR family grouped together outside our race season. So, who made the podium? FTR can be mighty proud of my friend Michael Goodman for winning the coveted Ironman Class! As usual, right after the event, he was fresh as a daisy. He looked like he had been out for a Sunday street bike ride. Kudos to Jack O’Neill, his support crew and the Action Kawasaki Team for finishing fourth overall in the Elite Class! Yes, they were competing against the factory guys. Lastly, I want to say how proud Off-Road Racing Ministries is for its second team (ORRM 2) for finishing third in the Family Class. This was accomplished by the father-son team of Frank and Timothy Campbell. After having the lead and dropping back to fourth due to a mechanical issue, they soldiered on to a strong finish! Thank you for representing OffRoad Racing Ministries as well as for your kindness and help when I was in a bind that weekend. The Dickson’s did not have a podium finish however the men and women of the Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club did call us up on the podium to make a wonderful contribution to Off-Road Racing Ministries. Though they could have made that donation to many wonderful organizations, we are humbled and grateful for their kindness to this ministry. Thank you Perry Mountain crew! I want to also thank the various FTR members from around the state of Florida for contributing to Off-Road Racing Ministries during the 24-Hour event. As most of you know, this event has become our annual fund raiser. Thank you for your generosity. I also want to thank the Southeast Florida Trial Riders for their contribution to the Rider Relief fund. To our many friends in that club (as well as to those whom we have not yet met) please know that we are grateful to you for your

generosity to that fund. Wow! That was a lot of information and I’m sure that by the time we arrive at the FTR Banquet we will have more stories to tell. I bet you too will be ready to share your “summer adventure stories.” However, I hope that you can come away with something more than just having read my article. I hope that you can see that God is constantly at work in the lives of His children. He never promised me (or you) that life would be easy. I still struggle with life. I trust that was evident from what I have written here today. However, God uses our struggles to help teach us to lean on Him for strength and trust. This is a good thing. So, when you are faced with a tough trial that life has thrown your way, try going to God first and talk to Him. Never forget that. This is food for thought! Have a great summer. I look forward to seeing you at the banquet.

Sincerely, Andy Dickson

India on an Enfield A few years ago, when Kenneth Maginnity first sat on a motorcycle, he was extremely resistant to the idea of riding. “I tried to worm my way out of it,” Kenneth said laughing. “But a really good friend of mine put enough pressure on me, thankfully, and I just bit the bullet and got one, and I haven’t looked back since.” His first bike, a 2002 YZF 250 was an “absolute beast and a little hard to kick over,” he said. Not long after that, Kenneth swapped the Yamaha for a 2006 KTM SXF 250. “I’ve just had an absolute ball riding it,” he said. “My buddy and I started going out on the weekends just to ride; it was just an excuse to get out there and get dirty.” It wasn’t long before Kenneth, an Australian native who currently resides in Ft. Lauderdale, heard about FTR. “One of the contractors at work was telling us about it,” he said, “so, I looked it up and found out all about it, and I said, ‘Well, it can’t hurt.’ ” At his first FTR race, Kenneth said he was “petrified.” “I don’t really like riding with other people,” he laughed. “I like a little bit of space around me.” When the horn sounded, Kenneth jumped on the bike, kicked it and, “of course, it didn’t start,” he said. So, he was dead last “by a good 30 seconds.” “But, you know, no one cared,” Kenneth spoke of the lackluster start. “I just rode my race and I had a brilliant time,” he said. “Everyone was just real encouraging – the FTR community is just a good bunch of people to be around.” Now, years later, Kenneth said he tries to race as many FTR events as he can; this year, he only raced one event because, as a private chef on a yacht, he’s was away at sea for the whole race season. “Next year is looking good though and I should get a bunch of races in,” he said with a grin from ear to ear. “I’ve been pretty fortunate in my job I’m in that allows me to travel a lot.” Of his trips, he’s been to the Mediterranean twice, the Caribbean three times and spent over a year in the Bahamas. “As soon as the boat’s back in Florida, it’s time to take the dust off the dirt bike, change the oil and away I go.”

26 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | June/July 2011

When Kenneth heard about the Khardung La pass, an 18,500-foot high road through the Himalayas and one of the highest motorable passes in the world, he was curious. “It’s something that’s just been on my mind for a long time,” Kenneth said of the challenge, “and I just thought, you know, it’s either now or never.” He started researching, making plans to ride across India on a motorcycling holiday. “I pulled the pin and started making some phone calls,” he said. And, as he made plans, one thing made him feel “a little heavy,” he said. “How could I go and see India and her beauty and not help some of the people living in abject poverty?” India is second only to China in buying natural resources from Brazil, Australia and other countries, Kenneth said. “India is an up-and-coming world power,” he said. “But it has both extreme wealth and extreme poverty and I just thought, what can I do to make a difference?” It wasn’t long before an idea floated into his mind. He could raise money for those less privileged. “Not only can I showcase how beautiful India is, I thought this would be a great opportunity to raise some funds for the not-so-well-off people of India,” he said. Many of his friends and guys at work encouraged him. “One organization called EndPoverty.org was totally excited about the idea,” Kenneth said. “So now any funds raised will be going toward EndPoverty’s work and the work they do in India.” EndPoverty.org, a nonprofit organization based in the US and working in more than 10 countries around the world, has a strong presence in India. “They specialize in micro-financing, helping fund small businesses with loans – as little as $80,” Kenneth said. “That will allow someone to buy a rickshaw, a sewing machine or fishing nets.” He repeated the Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Through EndPoverty.org, Kenneth realized a way to make a permanent difference. “And not just hand out a bunch of money and hope it works.” (continued on page 28)

India on an Enfield

Kenneth: This is the Google map of the journey. The distance I will travel if I just stay on the planned route and take no side trips will be the same as riding from Fort Lauderdale to Vancouver, Canada.

The EndPoverty.org loans are required to be repaid so that the organization can give out that money again. “The more I read into it, the better it gets,” Kenneth said. “They’re not giving people a handout; they’re giving people a hand up.” In preparation for the trip, which was originally planned for 2011 but has been pushed back to 2012 due to marketing and promotion of the ride, Kenneth

purchased a 1965 Royal Enfield motorcycle, complete with an 18-liter gas tank, which is being rebuilt right now in India. “I have pushed a dirt bike a few times due to running out of gas,” he said. “There is no way I am pushing a bike over that 18,634-foot pass, period! I still carry a little extra fuel, just in case.” His journey over one of the world’s highest passes will begin in Delhi and travel through Kashmir, Rajasthan, over the Ganges River, up to Kathmandu and end in Kolkata. He plans to cover a grueling distance of approximately 3,500 miles in 70 days. “You can not rush these things,” Kenneth affirmed. “I will also spend some time at the end of the journey helping out in Kolkata nothing like getting your hands dirty.” He recently started an exercise regimen in preparation for the trip. “There’s no way I’m going to be able to sit on a vintage bike for over 3,500 miles and not have a sore bum,” he said. “The physical side of my training is easy. The devil’s in the details.” Apart from the altitude and riding at 18,000+ feet for days at a time, Kenneth said his biggest concern will be adjusting to the rules of the road, which he said are made to be broken. “And while I have a map of the direction I’m taking, Indian, American, Australian roads are all slightly diffident. Some of India’s national highways have speed bumps on them; others are not too much more than a dirt track…but, you know, that’s going to be half the excitement, too. Right now, the real adventure, Kenneth said, is in the mental preparation. “The traffic is going to put me in a huge state of fear…if you think you’ve got to be aware when you’re riding a motorbike on the roads in America, you know, times the population by three and half the country’s size and there you are, you’ve got India. For Kenneth, getting through remote stretches of mountain one-lane roads around corners is going to be a great exercise in patience and temperament, he said. “Which I need on a good day.” Next season, Kenneth said he’s hoping to hit half of the races before he sets sail again. “I love it (FTR) all, from the sweet check-in ladies, who always find my FTR number, thankfully….because I never have it, to the random person who will hold my bike at the start because I am there by myself...I love the track officials willing to help me get my bike out that muddy rut. I even like the AA riders as they give me ‘Woot, Woot,’ and then ride by me like I have stalled the bike….again. Truly, you all are just a fantastic bunch of people and I can’t wait to see you all again.”

The editor checked in with New York’s Nate Kanney after his best GNCC finish of the season in June to find out how the FTR Hare Scrambles compares to the national series and how he hooked up with WMR Competition Performance in Stuart, Fla. JS: Hey, Nate. What’s going on? You just finished training? Self promoted aaer E6.NK: Yeah, I actually rode BroomeTioga today. JS: At the motocross track? NK: Yeah, I’ve been trying to practice a little more moto because I’ve been riding a lot of woods lately. JS: That’s cool. So, I wanted to talk to you about your time in Florida earlier this year... NK: Yeah, like anybody, I come to Florida in the winter time to train so it’s nice for me to be able to come down there and train but also have a series like FTR; it’s very similar to the NETRA (New England Trail Riders Association) Hare Scrambles Series that I grew up riding. I would say that FTR maybe has bigger turnouts and they’re maybe a little bit more popular but they’re very similar. JS: Where did you grow up? NK: About an hour away from New York City in Upstate New York. JS: Really? You don’t have an accent? NK: No, I’ve managed to avoid that accent my whole life so that’s good, I guess. I don’t know if I’d be welcome in Florida in the winter. JS: (laughs) So, how did you hook up with WMR? NK: Well, George and Christian were going to the races last year

and helping Chris Bach with motor work, and we used to all hang out together and were all friendly together so...when I found out that I wasn’t going to be with the factory KTM team anymore, WMR just immediately offered to help out if I needed it and, you know, after I talked with all the factory teams and talked to Bob and the WMR guys, I started liking what I heard from them better than I did the other teams so I decided to kind of risk it all and start with nothing and help them build that team up. JS: And, now that you’re halfway through the GNCC season, do you like it? NK: Yeah...It’s really the best environment I could really ask for at the races and even at the shop; they’re very positive and obviously they’re very competitive; there’s quite a goal to win and they want me to do well, but they’re also not really on my case if I have a bad day; they have a very good attitude toward the racing and toward what we’re doing and I think, for me, it helps a lot and it makes me want to do well for them. And they do a really good job with the bike; they built a better bike than what I had on the factory team, and they do anything they can for me, so it’s definitely better than I could really ask for.

JS: Wow! You can say that: they built a better bike? NK: Yeah, here’s the thing: you can absolutely say that. I don’t have any problem saying it, either. I mean, there’s things about the factory bike that no matter where you go, you’re never going to be able to beat it, but altogether, the results prove it. I mean, last year, by this time, I’d already had two or three mechanical failures and this year, I haven’t had one so I think the reliability of the bike speaks for itself, and performance-wise, it’s at least on par with the factory bike, so it’s really nice for me. JS: So, you kind of lucked out, it sounds like? NK: Yeah, I really lucked out. I might have been able to make some more money and had a little bit better of a deal having some other options but I sort of took the risk and went that direction with WMR because I liked what I heard and I saw a lot of potential, and fortunately for me it’s actually paying off and it looks like I was right. JS: Plus, you kind of get to do your own thing, right? NK: Yeah, exactly. I have a lot of freedom to help choose sponsors or products or parts on the bike and it’s also very much more laid back than some of the factory teams. (continued on page 36)

JS: What did you think of the FTR races this year? NK: ...I feel like I got third several times over the winter. I couldn’t really crack Charlie and Garrett but, anyway, it’s the offseason and it’s a good time to just sort of work on everything so it’s not a bad thing to go and get third especially to those two guys because they’re very fast down there. JS: Now it’s all GNCC, right? NK: Yeah, the biggest thing for us is to do well in GNCC. JS: Can you compare the two at all? NK: I mean, the trails are possibly a little bit tighter in sections in FTR and they’re also maybe not as rough and worn in but other than that I think the tracks and everything other than that are pretty similar; I know FTR always does a cool section for spectators with a log crossing or a hill, so that’s nice. JS: What’s next for you? You’re going to Finland for the ISDE (International Six Days Enduro)? NK: Yeah, I was fortunate enough to get chosen this year (as one of the six best riders in America). JS: Have you heard about what the terrain’s like there? NK: I think it’s going to be a lot of sand and a lot of rocks. JS: Oh, so you’ll be good, right? NK: Yeah, I should be good. All the practice in Florida should come into play. JS: And WMR built a race bike for you? NK: Yeah, they built it and they already sent it out. JS: Awesome. Who do you want to thank? NK: I’d like to say thanks to everybody at WMR for making this possible for me. I’m really happy that I was able to work with them and I hope I’m together with them next year. [Editor’s note: WMR is selling T-shirts with all of the proceeds going to Nate to pay for his cost to attend the event. “I hope everybody in Florida buys one,” Nate said.]
