ell, my term as President is finally over. As you read this, Ford Snodgrass will be your new President. I wish him the best as he leads us for the next two years. It’s going to be a big change for me. I’ve been on the Executive Committee for seven straight years — two as President and five as Treasurer. Returning to the ranks of being just a member is a welcome change. I wish to thank all those who have supported and encouraged me over those seven years. On a truly sad note, we have recently lost a long time friend and FTR supporter, Jack Harkins. Jack has been an active worker and supporter of FTR from the very beginning. He was one of the few original organizers of FTR still around. As an active member of SADRA, he continued to work and participate in the sport he so loved right up till the end. Jack, you will be missed. On the racing side, we are over half way through the 2010-11 season. We’ve had some great races already this season and I look forward to many more. My thanks to the many clubs that work so hard to give us quality events, season after season. If you aren’t a part of a local club, you need to be. You don’t know what you are missing. I encourage everyone to join and participate in a local club. While I have enjoyed the opportunity to share my thoughts and concerns with you these past two years, not having to write this column every month will not be missed. BOYNTON BEACH — Michael Relyea grew up in New York as a “MX guy,” he said. “I raced dirt bikes for most of my life. I’ve only been racing quads for about four years.” He started on four wheels because of his business partner, he said, who was “more into quads.” “It’s the same thing with my girlfriend,” he said. “She rides, too. She’s pit crew. She does everything for us.” Along with racing quads - he won at Bartow 1 and took second at Bartow 2 - Michael manages money, he said, and travels a lot. “It definitely has its perks.” Look for him in the Vet C class on Sunday, as well. “I just started racing dirt bikes again, too,’ he said. “We’ve met a lot of really great people since the ‘08 season.””

riving into a race recently, I got stuck behind a trailer with the name of a popular motocrosser stickered across the back. Obviously, the trailer had been sold to a FTR family and I smiled knowing the trailer would be put to great use. After parking, walking down

vendor’s row, I spotted an even-more-familiar box truck that I used to see - from Loretta Lynn’s to Mini Olympics. I marched up to the back of the box truck, wide open as usual. There was music on, like always, but no one around...Some things never change. I shot a quick text message to find out if the box truck was sold, and it was, so that got me to thinking. FTR is, and always has been, full of diehards. Sure, there are members who can’t make it out to the races anymore, but they still subscribe to this magazine. Others can only come out and watch. And there are still some buying handme-down MX gear and keeping it in the family. It’s moments like this that remind me how my FTR family is who I want to surround myself with. Even if I’m not racing. I’m still meeting new members and running into people I havent seen in ten years! Just last weekend, a long-lost motocross “Schoolboy” showed up on the A250 line. I laughed when he flew by hooting and hollering, on the gas and in the lead. “It was gnarly. I hit so many trees and probably wrecked like four times,” he said on Facebook. He finished around top ten overall and won his class by almost a minute. Gnarly but nice. In closing, the election results show two areas, including Palm Beach, Broward, Dade and Monroe counties, are vacant. Beach house, anyone? Jenn Sheppard is a former FTR Enduro Women’s champion who recently earned her

master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University. Now, she’s one of the ones watching, working to bring her fellow FTR members a championship magazine!

KNOW THE CONDITIONS

Things happen during a race like weather, heat, rain and dust. Rules allow 20 feet on either side of the orange arrow, but that does not guarantee it is safe to ride there. Ruts get deeper, whoops bigger, and new roots appear every lap. As th e trail widens, more logs, stumps and vines appear. Directional arrows, danger warnings and ribbons may get knocked down during a race without the knowledge of the club or race officials.

SLOW DOWN TO GO FAST

When entering the scoring chicane, the first set of poles thru the last set of poles connected by ribbon, slow down to first gear. There have been too many racers blasting through the chicane and taking out the expensive scoring equipment. If racers continue to roost the scoring chicane team, those volunteers will not continue to score. Once out of the chicane, resume speed. Races are not won in the first 100 feet off the start or in the two seconds it takes to get through the chicane.

acing can be dangerous. The 2010-2011 season has had its share of injuries. As the rider Safety Coordinator and HS Referee, Donny Richardson is committed to safety. In a recent forum post, he stated three important topics that need repeat attention.

Use practice for what it was meant for: a time to view the trail, look for areas to pass that may be of concern and make mental notes about the trail. It’s similar to when the pros walk a motocross track. For all the adrenaline filled adolescents and teens out there, remember that you are role models for the younger ones. Over the last several seasons, most serious injuries have been in practice, not race time. There was no practice trophy or cash prize for finishing practice first. There’s a full spectrum of ages and abilities riding practice. Parents need to exercise common sense when out on the trail. Racers need to slow down when course workers wave yellow or orange flags. Do not pass any other racers. Wait until you are clear of the incident before resuming race speed.

Hare Scramble #3 featured a bridge right before the scoring chicane that forced riders to slow down. The Hare Scramble Committee recently approved on first reading the concept of adding a “safety zone,” that would designate the chicane and other areas for slowing down traffic. 8 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | January 2011

Hare Scramble Committee Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by the chairman. Role was taken, in attendance were: Mike Belle (Chairman) Don St. John (Scorekeeper) Donny Richardson (Referee) Jeremy Powell (RCDR) Steve Loomis (OSDR) Debbie Broderick (Apollo) Jack Terrell (Sunrunners) Troy Stainbrook (Suncoast) Randy Rash (FTR) Carol Preston (SADRA) Rick Bertine (TCTR) Jonny Simpkins (CFTR) Allen Pearce (BSTR) Quorum was verified. The chairman explained that it had come to his attention that the youth advancement rules adopted earlier in the season may be a little over aggressive for some of the classes. The Evo-C class also needed some adjustment and the following proposal was presented: ------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapter VII, C Current: 2. For all lowest division classes (Ex: Specialty and Displacement C Classes, etc), with the exception of the Golden Master, Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Youth Classes, when 25 advancement points are accrued, the rider is promoted to the next higher division. All youth B riders will advance when 35 advancement points are accrued. For all other classes, except youth-C riders, the advancement point is at 45 points. When the points are accrued at or prior to the first fifty percent (50%) of the proposed and approved season sanctions, the rider is promoted immediately and will then take 90% of the points awarded in the lower class to the higher class. When the points are accrued after 50% or more of the scheduled events have been completed, the rider can remain in the lower class for the remainder of the season. The promotion will take effect at the start of the next competition season. However, riders voluntarily advancing themselves to a higher division after 50% of the scheduled events have been completed will carry no points to the higher division. Points earned in the lower division will remain in the lower division. 8. All youth C riders (Ex: Junior-C, Mini-C, 65-C and Peewee-C) will advance to the next higher class after accumulation of two 1st place finishes or 3 top 5 finishes. This promotion will take effect immediately. The rider will take

Executive Committee Meeting Minutes For Nov/Dec A meeting of the Florida Trail Riders Executive Committee was called to order at 7 p.m. on November 6, 2010 at the Sunrunners Hare Scramble in Bartow, FL. Roll call was as follows: Present: President Allen Pearce, Vice President Jack Terrell, Treasurer Jonny Simpkins, Hare Scramble Chairman Mike Belle Absent: Secretary Vacant, Enduro Chairman Peter Magee, Motocross Chairman Ken Kloza I. Old Business - Tiffany St. John has resigned as Secretary and accepted the position of Business Manager as of November 1, 2010. The contract was executed by Allen Pearce, Jonny Simpkins and Tiffany. As per the contract, the following issues were discussed: 1. The P.O. Box location will be set up in Yulee, Florida. 2. Tiffany will change the mailing address and request a debit card from SunTrust. 3. The FTR phone will be set up with Verizon. The EC members present agree that the contract plan should be an unlimited plan with data services. Tiffany should choose a phone that will support the plan. 4. The Storage Unit will be moved to Kingsland, GA. 5. The FTR Server is not working properly at this time, Tiffany will have it looked at to see if it can be fixed. II. New Business - Allen Pearce made a motion to move the date of the BSTR Gatorback Hare Scramble to April 2 & 3, 2011. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Allen Pearce made a motion that the May 15 & 16, 2011 hare scramble date be given to another club that would like to host a second event. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Mike Belle will put something out on the forum to see which clubs would be interested. Jonny Simpkins made a motion to adjourn at 8:00 P.M. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. A meeting of the Florida Trail Riders Executive Committee was called to order at approx. 8 p.m. on Dec. 18, 2010. Present at the meeting: President Allen Pearce, Vice President Jack Terrell, Treasurer Jonny Simpkins, Enduro Chairman Peter McGee, Motocross Chairman Ken Kloza, Hare Scramble Chairman Mike Belle, Carol Preston (guest request by Allen to show jackets and talk about the banquet) and Deborah Broderick (guest – new secretary-request by Allen for new member exposure to committee process) Allen: Started with accepting the original banquet committee of past year because they basically have already started the process of organizing the banquet; Tiffany and Carol major players. Allen believes this is to FTR’s benefit to maintain this group. Carol: presented two jackets for approval to move ahead with on that particular vendor. She stated that the committee (banquet) is going to pursue at least 3 venders for comparison both for the jackets and the trophies.

Allen: Suggested that the jacket for 1st time on EC and then after that a cheaper one (wind breaker was suggested) instead of the t-shirts that they were presently getting. Carol: Wanted to know basically from Jonny (treasurer) what the amount is that the banquet committee has to spend. Jonny explained the budget to Carol and that the general consensus was that if we follow the budget, we should have no problem making the 200 min. room limit. Allen: His opinion is that the hardest thing to meet this year will be the room minimum and not the meals minimum. Carol: talked about the contract (banquet accommodations with the Dolphin for this year) and how the rooms might go up in price by $5.00 for the paying members. Jonny wanted clarification to this statement. Explanation was the cost change due to the time in which we wanted to use the facility. Allen: stated that the date proposed to us was a July date, and the contract lists an August date but the original contract was the July 27th date. He stated that no one saw the contract. The information given was over the phone. Carol and Allen agree: suggestion that the $8,000 credit used to reduce the cost of the rooms minimum. Mike Bell: (On subject of past banquet costs) Added costs that seemed a bit odd to him. Jack: (On subject of last year’s # of meals purchased (based on Carols answer) Meals paid for were 562 plus 50 comp tickets equals 614 paid meals. Mike Bell: what is the price of tickets going to be this year? (Carol) $64 to $65 Jonny: he revised the budget and with the mentioned numbers

Nov/Dec Executive Committee Meeting Minutes earlier in Jack’s statement, he and Jack feel that the budget presented today is very conservative and that FTR will be okay with the venue that we have to abide by this year. Carol: wants to have the revised budget sent to her. She will fight in the January meeting with the contract folks (Banquet; Dolphin). Allen: states he is ready to go to court over this contract date dilemma with the Dolphin. There was talk over price of rooms and the difference between cost in a month date change. Carol: wants to know what to do if we get out of contract…..she would like to go negotiate with the Hilton immediately. Allen: advertising needs to start early instead of March and April. Carol: wants to move date earlier (banquet). Jack: states that it will not be feasible this year but maybe next year. Allen agrees. Pete: why earlier? (Banquet date) Carol: She believes that the wait time over the summer discourages attendance. She believes that if the banquet is earlier, the attendance would be higher. Mike and Allen: Pointed out schedule conflicts and time constraints play a large role in the date of the banquet. Mike: Pointed out a schedule (not sure which one) was in conflict with our schedule of events (banquet included) that causes some members to not attend the banquet. Allen: stated that with the loss of the mine (at his clubs property that they use for events) they will probably not want to return for any more events. Group went over the budget. Jonny: got tickets fixed (banquet purchases in budget), changed expenses to show real value of meal cost, changed income to show the $8,000 credit from. Jack: explained in detail the changes. Allen’s points in e-mails to the finance committee were supported within the changes that Jonny produced and that Jack explained. The FTR net was lower as a result of the changes to $8,437.38. (See attached document,” FTR Budget 2011”) Jack: points out that the benefit is not included because the budget is conservative and that if the benefit does happen, history dictates a net added to income of $8,000 which is a plus for FTR. Rainy seasons and the account that the benefit could be the 14th race are factors for not considering it in the budget. Too many factors dictate that it could not happen rather than happen. He also made a point that the budget takes into account of future costs that probably will not happen. Mike: Have we ever had a budget before? Allen: Not like this. He stated that in the past they did the same thing all the time and just spent money where needed. Jack: not a formal one like this one (budget) Allen and Jack: agreed that it was better to have the budget like the one presented today. Jack: states that with this budget FTR can more accurately control the rise of costs by either taking actions to cut cost or take actions to raise income. Allen: admits the emphasis on the banquet in the budget is good. When he came on EC was not involved with the banquet, it just happened. He questioned Dan and then they commenced to cracking down when times got hard. Jonny: Carol and others will know what they have to spend thus making the process of the banquet easier possibly. Jack: explained that in the past 7 of 10 banquets the revenue increased each year so when decreases happened and costs got out of control, problems happened. Banquet was looked at with no cost guidelines to keep under control in the past (increased revenue each year). Allen: Consider as road map and not policy (budget)

Mike: suggests they accept the budget with the revisions added Jack: seconds it. Unanimous acceptance Daniel White issue: (See attached document, “Daniel White Protest”) Allen: states that the only choice is to negate the entire election if this protest is supported. Jack: basically two issues. 1) Using the emergency rule change for financial hardship to FTR seems out of place, Executive committee can not make an emergency rule to use as an excuse not to hold an election 2) By not having an Executive Director does not make the election invalid. He also made everyone aware that the General Membership was notified about watching the web site for information on the election. The Executive meeting minutes where this subject was addressed was posted on-line as well. Allen: Stated he got a phone call from Daniel White that if Allen did not have a revote that he would protest the election. Jack: The Exec. Committee has the right to decide by vote if the election was valid and that is truly the only decision that needs to be made on this matter. Peter: Motion that group rules the vote was valid. Ken: seconded it Jonny: stated that the election was not by the rule book. Jack: what do you want us to do Jonny? Wait for a new Executive Director, wait for a magazine we can not afford, etc…. before we hold our annual elections? Let’s be reasonable Mike: what about mail out ballots Jack: done once not done every year Allen: stated take vote: Was the election valid? 5 yes, 1 abstains. The motion and vote turned down the protest to the election. Allen: stated that many of his votes showed up late, but Daniel Whites never did show up. Even if we invalidate and revote there will be no changes. Deborah asked about Daniel White’s proposal for changes to the constitution. Allen: stated that he has proposals too and that they should all be submitted to the BOD via the secretary. Jack: stated need to yank references to the Executive Director. All those references need to be changed. Allen: stated that the executive director and business manager need to be referenced in the book that they are the same position. And make the Executive/Business manager not an elected official Jack: why is the requirement of 45 days prior not used when the book states 45 days for the magazine insert and the web site notification? Allen: changed because things were moving slowly. We avoided disaster because of it. Mike: why do we not have the election committee look at the election process and such? Allen and Jack: the election committee is there for just the vote count, not analyze the election process. Allen: stated he will have proposals to present to the BOD. He wanted to set a date for the next BOD meeting and was hoping Ford showed up to make that decision. Jack: what’s the rush? What needs to happen? Most meetings are around event dates. Allen: need dates to get things rolling for the New Year, so gets published etc….. Jonny: what about all the things you are tied to? Allen: New Executive will decide those matters such as the Master Admin to the QB account. Jack: Advance notice of the BOD meeting? Allen: No rule, but need to pass off information to next committee. Jack: 1st 10 days good enough?

Allen: yes. Dan George in the past would remind Allen to set the dates and Dan looked at the calendar for good dates to have the BOD. Allen: April 2nd looks good for first meeting Jack: need a week or two to decide a meet date for BOD. That will be enough time. Ken: emergency rule request Ken: rule book only allows the motocross to hold only two events at a single track in one season. He needs to hold an event for a 3rd time at the same facility this season to get his race numbers. Jack: this is considered a competitions rule change and possibly a financial hardship for the series and FTR. Allen: need 2/3 vote from committee to approve the emergency Jack: the motocross committee makes it complete. There was an informal show of hands to necessitate the use of property. Pass Allen: need to go through steps properly. Jonny: plan motocross closer to increase participation Allen: just trying to get through this year. Mike: Rider reps for A/B specialty. He was asking for help in deciding between Jeremy Powell and Paul Lucas. Allen: Mike you need to appoint one. Mike: not sure he feels they are both great. Jonny: Paul is not as involved as Jeremy so suggests that you pick Paul so that he can gain involvement and experience at being involved. Jack: Rider rep needs to show up to meetings. How much do they communicate with the group that they are to represent? Mike: recommends Jeremy Allen: second? Anyone Jonny: seconds Unanimous vote to accept Jeremy Powell to the HS A/B rider rep. Dec. 16, 2010 Daniel White Protest presented at 12-18-2010 EC meeting Dear EC and Election Chairman, With the recent problems in voting and my protest, I am using this “registration letter” from Ballotbin.com as my official proposal for changing the current voting procedures. I also want to demonstrate the ease of online electronic voting. I am formerly escalating my protest to the validity of the entire election and I am requesting this an Emergency Rule Change to the FTR Constitution. With the invalidity of the recent election, I believe it will create financial hardship for FTR. The financial hardship will be caused by FTR being mandated to invalidate the current election results because the FTR Election Procedures were not followed (Article IX, 2: There was no INSERT in the FTR Magazine and; Article IX, 7: There was no special mail-out for the election). Now FTR will need to create a new ballot and mail the new ballots to all FTR members. Under Article XI, the Executive Committee has the authority to make this change because the change is not routine and not covered in the FTR Constitution. I state this party because the entire FTR Election hinges on Nominations being received by the Executive Director, which FTR did not and does not currently have. Last year’s Hare Scramble Series Overall High Point Travis Hullfish brought the #113 “out of retirement” when he showed up in Bartow to race. “Trav,” as he’s affectionately called, grew up through the ranks of the Mini A and Junior A. The Fellsmere native, who was recently married, showed up at the second Bartow race with last-minute number plates. He finished five laps in 1:57:11 and less than two minutes behind the leader Garrett Edmisten in first. It was the closest anyone has finished behind Garrett since the first race of the season! Those two, out of 11 AA riders, were the only ones to finish five laps.

Greetings Florida Trail Riders… racers! I cannot believe that another year has come and gone. How many of you (I am especially speaking to the Baby Boomer generation), back in elementary school days, would have every believed that we would one day be writing 2011 on anything? What an odd number. When I think back over the years, I can’t think of too many good things manufactured in odd years; like the ’87 YZ 250. I had one of those. I didn’t think it was that outstanding. Yet, the ’65 Corvette was a real looker so I guess I can’t be too critical. Then again, I was born in an odd year. Maybe that’s my problem! As I look back on the past year, I want to say thank you again to those who have supported ORRM (Off-Road Racing Ministries). We appreciate the opportunity to serve the Florida Trail Riders organization. During those gloomy days, when I have spoken to the families of injured riders from across this state they have always expressed enormous gratitude to the FTR family. You have been so supportive and caring. Thank you for supporting our Off-Road Racing Ministries injured riders fund called Rider Relief. Those families who were struggling with medical bills were very grateful for the donation. To those that encouraged us and supported the other part of our ministry, thank you. Though you tell us that we bless you, please know that you are a source of encouragement to us as well. Thank you for attending the ORRM church services and for being a sounding board for ideas. While I was on vacation I received a couple calls regarding the sudden death of a long time SADRA and FTR member, John “Jack” Harkins. He passed away at his home on December 27, 2010. If you are not aware, he was there (with Jim Hines) when FTR was born. Though Jack’s racing days had passed, he was a fixture at the SADRA events. You could always spot him buzzing around on his well equipped four-wheeler. He toted marking paint, cutting shears, staple guns, machete and possibly a kitchen sink somewhere on that Honda. He will be missed. At the time of this writing, there is a tentative memorial service planned February 1, 2011 at the SADRA Club meeting at 7:00 PM. If you are in the area and can attend (location is to be determined) I am sure his

family and our many racer friends in the Sarasota area would greatly appreciate it. To those who know us, you know that we travel to Tennessee each Christmas and work at the old family cabin. It’s a chore but if I don’t go my fear is that it will be taken over by the local varmints (i.e. squirrels or some guy who has robbed a bank and is looking for a hide-out). Needless to say, it is in a rather secluded area. While I was there I was chatting with a friend, Don Padgett. He was the local Presbyterian minister but retired about 5 years ago. As we were chatting, he said, “Andy, I should have never retired from the church. Since I have retired I am so busy I can’t get anything done that I need to do (he does a lot of volunteering!) I never knew I would be so busy once I retired. And, I have noticed that the older I get the faster time is moving.” What is Mr. Padgett going to do? He is almost 70. He is believes he is busier now than he has ever been and on top of that, the pace of time appears to be moving faster than he can keep up. In other words, there isn’t enough time in the day to get it all done! Does this sound familiar? I was talking to someone just today about this very subject. How is it that with all the “time saving devices” we have today (such as cell phones, texting, emails, etc) we still can’t seem to get it all done? I heard that the average American will spend 6 years of their life just watching TV. What if, at the end of your life, you could ask God for an extension? Tell Him that you would like to do a swap. You would like Him to delete all the time you spent watching TV and in return He would give you an additional 5 to 7 years of life back. Boy, that sort of puts things into perspective doesn’t it. I know that would be neat but God doesn’t work that way. We are better off to make the best use of the time we have right now. If you have children, you better make good use of while they are in your care. As I have said before, no one, at the end of their life, while struggling to breath their last breathe has said they regret they could not go to work tomorrow to shuffle some more papers. No, at that point, all that matters are relationships. It might be the relationships with your parents, spouse, sibling, or children, but no relationship is more important than your relationship with God. Don’t wait to build a relationship with those you love. And, more importantly, don’t wait to spend time with the one that created you. I recently read a quote by Glenn Beck that is worth mentioning.

“Remember, you can’t control the passage of time, but you can control what you do with that time as it passes. Let’s make every day count.” I thought that was pretty clever. The Bible also has something to say about how we should live. In Ephesians 5:15-17 it says: “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” This passage reminds us to live wisely. Christians are not called to be boring but to make the most of every opportunity God gives us. However, we are warned that there are those that are evil. In our world today we can certainly see evil abound. Yet God says, for the brief time we have on this earth and to get the most bang for our buck, we are better off to know His will for our life. What does that mean? It begins with a relationship with Him. How can you know what someone wants you to do if you do not communicate with the individual? Once you know God, you will be surprised at what you will discover! As we embark on the New Year, I’m sure you are vowing to lose weight, get fit, drink less, quit smoking… or something. Every racer is looking to improve. It’s the nature of the beast. We are a competitive breed. We’re special. Why not look at yourself spiritually. Where do you stack up? Has it been a long time since you have talked with God? I can assure you, He desires to speak with you. Take time for Him this year. Get to know your Maker. Now go and think on these things. The reason I only work with smaller groups is for you. With a maximum of 14 riders at each class, I can give each rider the personal attention they need and deserve. We will work on each riders individual weaknesses and make you stronger in your problem areas. The riding schools will cover all areas of motorcycle competition. Some of the areas we will be working on are physical training, mental training, bike set-up, diet and motorcycle technique. On the motorcycle technique we will be training on MX, woods, and an endurocross track if available. The areas covered will include hills, rocks, roots, balance, clutch control, throttle control, braking, accelerating, overall speed, coordination, corners, body position, vision focus and how to properly weight the bike. I will also show you my secret “speed drill” that will make you faster each and every time you get on your motorcycle!! All my classes will have the option of 1, 2 or 3 days in length. Day one is foundation building day. Day two is applying the techniques learned on day one to obstacles (logs, rocks, MX, creek crossings, hills, roots, etc) and day three, we apply all we learn to race loops. We work on raw speed, line selection, braking and accelerating points and how to shave precious time off in each and every section. Day 2 is only available to those that have completed day 1 and day 3 is only available to A, AA riders and riders that have completed a two-day RRU class. MX CHAIR Happy New Year. Hope

everyone had a wonderful holiday. What will this year bring? In the last issue, I pondered a question one FTR member asked, “Does FTR need MX or does MX need FTR?” My conclusion to that question is another question: Does the FTR membership want MX?

At Sunshine last October, FTR members made the race.

At Lake City in November, FTR members made the race and through a poll to guess the attendance for last month’s

FTR Motoplex race, only members said they would attend.

Now we start a new year. Will FTR MX gain support, or is this season lost? Will tracks stay committed to host our remaining events? Will we finish the season? I was often asked these questions at the Astronaut Trail Hare Scramble last month. My answer, I do not know. I believe that I have done everything within my scope of authority to keep FTR MX alive and moving forward. However, I cannot make you participate. So the bottom line is you! It is your vote whether or not FTR MX should continue.

The next race at Bartow may be the deciding factor if FTR MX will continue this season. NO show, NO go – that may be it. Many of you know the dilemma with the track owners - revenue vs. expenses with FTR MX events. FTR policies are expensive to track owners. If our numbers cannot justify those expenses, we’re done. The only way we can continue, is to increase participation. So again, it is up to FTR members (YOU) whether or not FTR MX should continue. As an FTR member, YOU will vote on Jan. 16 in Bartow as to the fate of the 2010-2011 FTR MX season. If you do not participate, you vote NO to FTR MX events. If you do participate, you vote to let FTR MX continue. It is up to you.

A handful of members showed up to Lake City MX for MX #5 on Nov. 14. After Saturday’s practice, the race on Sunday had to be canceled because only 19 FTR members showed up! All attendees received the maximum number of points for attending. A minimum of 50 FTR members are required to have the event. Opposite page: Ryan McCarty at the Bartow MX race. His father, Rex, joined FTR a few years ago, when the Sunshine State Quad Series was still around. “I was looking for a family-friendly environment,” he said. “FTR is very well know for the Hare Scramble series. The problem with the MX series is you have a lot of series competing against it. The hare scrambles are the only game in the state, so they get it all. It’s just tough for motocross. It’s diluted and FTR unfortunately is not getting a bigger share. They’re getting a smaller piece of it.”

The “Salute to Veterans” race in Bartow is ran on land from a reclaimed phosphate mine so it’s unique and has some interesting elevation changes. The parking area is on a large extended plateau that lends to excellent viewing as the race course is laid out 80- to 100-feet below. The course had received some rain prior to the race weekend so it was in great condition. Open fields, mature plated pines, motocross elements and off-camber lines offered something for everyone. The quads ran on their own track for a change so the lines that formed were true single track in many areas and new acreage had been opened up for the club to use for the course. Saturday mileage was 7 miles and Sunday was around 8.5 miles. Haley and I did the practice lap before her race. Since she was new to the bike, I wanted to see how she handled the course. She seemed tentative but handled it all with no real issues. We talked prior to her race about how we were back to racing one lap at a time. This was riding with adult-sized people, with adult sized bikes at speed. There was another young lady that showed up in her class, so now we had a race. I think when the gun went off, something new I’d never seen used before, I think the realization that this is the deep end of the pool might have set in. She went into the first corner last (on purpose) and two corners in missed a simple off-camber corner she had done in practice no problem. A loss of momentum created a bike laying on the downhill side. Some nice course help and she was off. Watching from above the bluff, it was obvious this is going to truly be a challenge for her to run the speed of the rest of the class. It’s nerve wracking waiting there and she’s no where in sight. My wife exclaimed “I think I see her!” followed by, “I think she’s off in the bushes.” I asked where and she said, “See that tree that’s moving around? That’s her.” Minutes go buy and she’s up and moving. We cheer as she rolls over the step-up jump and dumps the bike two corners from the finish. So, 33 minutes after her adventure began, it was over. It seems a beginner rider from two rows behind her caused an issue with a right hand uphill which knocked her off-line and caused the bike and her to go their separate ways. Landing on something hard had caused some back pain, rolled in with the reality of the day was enough.

Tears were flowing, but the acknowledgment of what lays ahead was taken away from the day. She’s excited about the race after next (grades will cause the skipping of the next one). Which brings me to my race. I went out for the practice lap. The course was so enjoyable I ran the whole thing and I felt good, I mean REAL good. I don’t know why, but a sense of confidence came over me. Either it was the course, the weather or fate but I was so excited for the race to start, which it did with a kick, and another kick, a wheelie, another wheelie, and the first corner. The beginning of my race was not going to plan at the moment, but I set off to start passing people in front of me. As simple as this sounds, sometimes it seems a lot harder than you’d think, except for today. As we strung out along the side of the bluff weaving up and down the side, I counted at least eight helmets strung out in front of me. Then I noticed it..I wasn’t worried. I started picking people off one at a time. I was opportunistic as two guys had slow wrecks in the pines. I looked for more efficient, smother lines, and kept passing people. I rolled through the chicane to end the first lap and looked up at scoring...it read third. Now at this point I’m feeling great. I’m going fast when the course lets me go fast, not taking chances in the MX areas as I’m horrible in them and almost seeming like I’m riding one gear faster than I’m used to. Soon I see him...34C, Ryan Turner. He started last in the first race of the year - forgot to turn his gas on - and still finished third. And he won the last race so now I’m thinking, he must be the leader! The revelation at this point is one that pays dividends beyond the race, the day, the season. I can do this I can run this pace, at least on this day, and that’s

a shot of energy that you don’t find in a energy bar, bottle or pill. I’m following 34C and we get dumped onto a straight with a few chicanes thrown in. I pulled up along side Ryan and yell “Come on, 34C” as I passed him hard on the gas and into woods. It doesn’t really settle in at this point, as I’m too busy trying to go fast, but I’m in first place. The mere fact that I’m typing those words still seems strange weeks later. Having spent three years on and way-off trying this racing thing, I only gave this possibility a fleeting thought. So little that it really isn’t on my mind as I am coming up on straggler’s from classes that started in front of me. I’ve run across the occasional one in races before, but never in the amount and at the level of rider ability of what I’m seeing now. I’m thinking “What do I yell?” I’m usually the one getting hollered at. One comes to a stop, right in the bottom of a sand whoop. I kill my speed until I can figure out what he’s doing when I miss the next whoop and “Down goes Frazier.” I run back to the bike, fire it up and set off. Thus begins a cycle of not knowing how to lead a race. Seems there’s more to it than I would have imagined. I actually thought to myself that I must be going fast cause I keep crashing. I spend a couple of miles catching back up to the lead group with three riders in front of me. I start the 3rd lap and try to get back to Ryan. I manage to pass him on another straight and I’m back in first, until I hit a tree trying to pass straggler’s in some planted pines. There goes second and third, but I pass them both back again. I start to think, I can win this thing! Now I’ll be honest. I started to get a little emotional. It’s starting to settle in. I try not to screw up as I roll over the step-up and hit the last few corner’s before the scoring chicane. All of a sudden I see 34C out of the corner of my eye. Ryan executed the best looking block pass I’ve ever been involved in. He squirted off after stuffing me and I realized he deserved it for pulling off that move so close to the end. But what’s that ahead, the white flag? Seems we’re going out for another lap and that’s when I realized maybe it wasn’t quite over yet.

Now the problem with that is I’m supposed to ride between them, not to the outside of one like I just did! I spin around to go back through and Ryan zips past. He either let out a cry of joy or compassion as I now had given up the lead. I circled back through only to miss them again, so after performing a figure 8, I was back on track. Up until now I had been feeling out of this world. Not tired, riding well other than the crashes, and basically feeling the groove. But now all I was feeling were the blisters. I’ve never raced four laps, or as many as the leaders even. The speed, race time, and genius move of wearing brand new gloves all contributed to some big blisters on my left hand popping half-way through the last lap. Now I’ve got to salvage second so I’ll just grin and bear it. Bad line choice and I’m down again. I pick the bike up and try to hold on. I roll through the scoring chicane in second. I’m getting wood! Seems Ryan put 40 seconds on me after we last parted ways and took the win on his way to advancing up to Senior B. After, he talked about the race and he commented he felt bad for me when he saw me circling around for the missed double green. He wouldn’t have protested my finish if I hadn’t went back as I hadn’t gained any advantage. I replied that without rules we don’t have a sport, plus I wasn’t disappointed with second. I just wasn’t ready to win a race, but after tasting the front, it’s not something I want to forget!

Now, I’ve got to figure where to make my move. One section of the track we raced up the side of the bluff to a double green at the top and back down. I hugged the post so close my bark buster smacked off of it as Ryan went up higher and I led him back down the hill. It’s always easier to follow someone than it is to lead, so I’m thinking I’ve got to get enough distance between us where he loses sight of me and hopefully slows down a little. his weeks report is coming from Myakka City at the Carlton Ranch. The Old School Dirt Riders were offering a fine mix of tight woods, open pastures and several creek crossings - 7.4 miles for Saturday and 10.3 for Sunday. Right away, it was obvious the club had its act together as signup went quickly and a map was provided to view the course from overhead and see all the nice Sundayonly trail that was going to be available. Saturday soon arrived and so did Haley’s afternoon race. After her one-lap experience from the prior race, there was much motivation to improve on that and get some experience under her belt. She received loads of advice and support from club members to make her goal a seemingly easy one: Race until they tell you to stop. The need to put miles and laps on are obvious, yet the nerves and self doubt are never far away to wreck such well meant plans. We’ll wait and see how she does.

She’s off. Last place into the first creek crossing on purpose and off into the woods she goes. At this point her mother, Lori, starts the hand wringing. I’m not too worried about her, as I know great clubs like OSDR have people out there to help if trouble should arise, and besides the bike breaking that would then be my issue, she is on her own. Soon she arrives from out of the creek and completes the first lap. At this point she looks OK and heads out for a second one. We’re not concerned how fast she is, she is still trying! Before you know it, she appears from the water and looks great, then dumps the bike in the scoring chicane. In her defense, she wasn’t the only one I saw do this so I ran over, got her up right and asked about a third lap. “I can do another one?...Oh yeah!” was her reply as she headed out yet again. Lori and I were excited as her attitude was one of a finisher, and she proved us correct...three laps! They all counted and a big step in building confidence was achieved. She later admitted the thought of being teased by friends about only doing one lap again was a great motivator...ha!

After a second at last race, I’m left wondering if it was a fluke. Was it the course, what I ate that day or did I seemingly get it figured out overnight? I do know at this point I’m expecting more from myself. No being satisfied with anything but first. Okay, maybe top three would suffice. Prior to my race, a bit of weather info was passed along. “Rain is coming...30 minutes away”...Oh, great. Bike fired first kick and I was fifth going into the woods. Just trying to stay calm and wait for opportunities. A rider in front of me makes a bad line choice in some mud and I’ve got fourth. I’m thinking I really need to push at this point because once the rain starts, everything is going to slow down. Soon enough I’m through the scoring chicane... fourth place. The next lap the wind starts to pickup and the rain starts. I’m out in the open fields as it blows through but really seems to not be an issue as it was over quickly. second lap ends with me in third place. Just as I’m leaving the scoring chicane I see 26C, Tom Miller, pulling in to get new goggles. I’m thinking, “Oh yeah, that was easy” as I take over second place...for all of about 30 yards. As I was crossing up the other side of the first creek crossing I dump the bike and back by goes 26C... Sigh. Tom is faster in the woods, but I manage to pass him back on a big sweeping turn in the open field. I’m feeling pretty good right now as I set off to put some distance between us. The plan is working except for what seemed to be a simple dumping of my bike in a corner. I go to pull the clutch in after getting up and the lever won’t budge. It seems I had rotated my bark buster/hand guard up enough the clutch lever could fully extend. The worn out lever was now missing the piston on the master cylinder completed...aaaaagggghhhh! I frantically pulled up and down on the lever and all of a sudden I could pull it in. I take off and head through a small creek crossing. Go to pull in the lever and..No luck. I stall it, and began to pound on the clutch master cylinder while cursing my bad luck. Tom was nice enough to dump his bike right next to me as I frantically wiggled

anything in sight to get the lever to work. Manage to find the sweet spot and stagger off. Still in second. Now at this point I can’t count on being able to pull the lever in or not. It’s truly a 1 in 10 proposition of when it’ll work. Another creek crossing, stalled it and by goes Tom. At this point I’m running out of energy. The worry of stalling it is overwhelming as I roll into the scoring chicane... Can I do this? Shaking, I manage to not stall it as I head out for a fourth lap, realizing I’m not in the fight for second anymore, I’m just trying to survive. I down shift into first when I’m not sure of the corner, which makes for slow going. I’m struggling, which saps my energy. Riders from other classes are now passing me back that I had passed earlier. I tell myself in my helmet aloud “Don’t screw this up.” I kept waiting for third to come by as I took the easy split (didn’t realize until I went by that the hard split had loosened up to get over easily). I head through the chicane for the last time....third! I was pumped that I manage to hold on and score points.... But I had had second! First place of 199C, Scott Bowman, gaped Tom in second by 3 minutes, so let’s hope he doesn’t show up any more. Hope you enjoyed this report, now go out and ride !!! P.S. From David Jensen, Senior C: As a novice rider it is difficult sometimes especially in those conditions to gauge my pace or to maintain a ‘fast’ pace due to lack of experience in those conditions. The down hills and off cambers really slowed me down due to lack of experience...It seemed like every time I tried to ride fast I would crash because the bike would react differently than I expected, so I told myself to just ride, learn and not get me or the bike hurt/damaged. It also seemed like a spent a lot of time just getting out of the way. I had a great time and it was more or less a trail ride for me. My goal really was to finish and learn how to deal with those conditions. I enjoyed myself and I will go back for future events.”

Palmer Lynch,

on the Gas L

ast season, Palmer Lynch walked away with 11 out of 14 wins in the A 200 class. This year, he jumped on a new bike and entered a new class and has won five out of eight races already. The 17-year-old, who started riding when he was three, has also finished inside the top three overall. At the Brooksville race in January, he finished second for the first time in A Open. After that race, we caught up with him to see whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up with # 2 A.

Hey, Palmer. How was your weekend? You got second? PL: “Yeah, there were a whole bunch of GNCC riders this weekend. I just went down and they got passed me.” Do you like riding the Gas Gas? PL: “It’s been good. I like it better than the KTM because it handles better.” When you’re out there winning your class, are you thinking about winning the overall? You’ve gotten pretty close? PL: “Not really. I just try to ride and keep focused.” Other than the five wins, how has the rest of your season been so far? PL: “I didn’t race (Palatka) because it was too dusty and I didn’t want to get hurt. At Samsula, I got a flat tire. What’s your first dirt bike memory? PL: “I just remember I got a Suzuki JR 50 for Christmas.” Have you always been interested in hare scrambles? PL: “Yeah, that’s mostly all I really have done. I’ve done some MX but I’m not that big into it.”

Why? PL: “The main reason is that you get a lot more riding in when you’re doing hare scrambles. But I never practice in the woods. Really? PL: “Yeah, I can push harder on the MX tracks and just do lap after lap.” So, are the FTR races tough enough for you? PL: Yeah. [laughs] When do you think you want to move up to AA? PL: “I’m just going to wait until I highpoint a race.” Is there anyone out there you really want to beat? PL: “I think it would be fun to be able to catch up with Garrett and ride with him.” What’s your dad Kirt’s role in all of this? Does he help you out? PL: “Yeah, I started wrenching on bikes when I was 8. I just remember coming home from school and getting dropped me off at the shop. I would work on my bikes and stuff. He hasn’t touched my bikes since I was like 14.” Do you have any future racing plans? PL: “For right now, I’m just doing it for fun. I kind of want to change over and try to get into some type of rally racing. I’ve screwed around in it. It’s a lot of fun.” How long have you had #2? PL: “I really don’t know, since like ’85.” What do you like about FTR? PL: Not only the racing. I get to hang out with my friends. That’s another good part about going to the races.

Let’s pick up where we let off last month and start with building The Core - Basically, this is the

stomach and lower back. However, to be even more accurate the core refers to the muscles that run the length of the trunk and torso. When these contract they stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle; thus, they are supportive in nature. Interestingly, the powerful movements we generate in the extremities all come from this area, and it is for this reason that many people believe the core is the most important thing for a fighter to focus on when it comes to conditioning. Luckily, focusing on this area in combination with good eating, which would be a whole separate article and cardio exercises will leave you looking good as well. Some exercises used to develop the core include crunches, leg lifts (though many people don’t like this exercise due to the way it can wear and tear on your back), bicycles, abdominal bracing ( is when someone attempts to pull their navel back toward their spine), work with medicine balls, yoga, and push ups. Remember that almost every exercise can work the core, not just the obvious ones. In addition, there are various pieces of equipment out there that help accomplish this task. Just watch some infomercials for a ton of options. Since the core is so important, many believe that it should be worked almost everyday and I tend to believe that theory as well.

General Weight lifting - Nearly all mixed martial arts fighters lift weights these days. Generally, however, this is only done 2 to 3 days per week. Is it absolutely necessary? Perhaps not as Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the greatest MMA fighter on the planet today, doesn’t even work out with weights and is still known as one of the most powerful people to ever grace a mixed martial arts stage. Still, most fighters do lift weights to improve strength, explosiveness and to help avoid injury. I like to think of motocross riders as fighters as well especially at some of the nationals when you tend to ride longer motos. Some weight lifting exercises designed to increase explosiveness are dumbbell jerks, finger cleans, and dumbbell squats. In addition, standard exercises like the bench press, squat, upright rows, curls, bent over rows, military press, leg curls and extensions may also be beneficial. Oftentimes, these exercises are done with low repetitions and several sets to promote power, which is usually a better idea for our sport. Now if you don’t want to lift weights, you’ll have to get imaginative in order to build strength. Some ideas are chopping wood, or using a large hammer to drill down on a tire, (see Paulo Filho), push ups and chin ups.

Stand Up Training - You’ve heard it before. Cardio kick boxing can really boost one’s cardio and fitness level. For non-fighters that want to be in great shape, this will do the trick. Speaking of real fighting - This is the problem for people who want to have the endurance of a mixed martial arts fighter but don’t want to fight. It really can’t happen. You can come close for sure. But the thing that works to get people in MMA shape best is submission grappling and sparring in a cage or on a mat. There’s simply nothing like it. Bas Rutten, former UFC Champion and current MMA commentator, has indicated in the past that even marathon runners have gassed before when they’ve come into his gym. Simply put, wrestling is like a tug of war that never ends. Stand up fighting is a different kind of cardio, more explosion and speed. To be able to do both 100 percent requires that you practice using the muscles involved. And that means training to be a fighter. Search Google for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) gyms in your area, and then give them a call. Take a class on beginner’s kick-boxing. Don’t worry -- it’s for beginners. The training is likely to be the light and include a mitt-work (punching / kicking mitts) and foot work (how you move on your feet). After you’ve taken a few kick boxing classes and gotten to know the trainers and feel good about the gym, attend classes on beginner’s grappling. Sure, you’ll most likely be grappling with other students, but it’s likely to be light, with most of the focus on technique, while developing endurance.
