The Prez Says
FTR President Ford Snodgrass on the first
Well, I never thought I would hear these words in my lifetime but my editor says that I am really pushing my deadline for this article. I never really thought about having to write this article every month. I believe that this is the hardest thing that I have found about my position. We just had our first Board of Directors meeting this year and I think it went very well. We have a group of elected people who have decided to work as a team for the betterment of FTR. I know what you’re thinking, ‘How do I know we are working as a team?’ Well, here it is. On more than one issue at our meeting, Jonny Simpkins, Rocky Gavins and Jack Terrell all agreed on the same things. I was thinking, “Do I really need to be here anymore?” Anyway, the meeting was a success and I would like to thank all of the Board of Director members and guests who were in attendance. If the rest of my term goes this easy, I might try it again. My editor said I didn’t have to write a lot for this issue because it is online but she expects big things from me in the next issue. So, you should look forward to the next issue because it will be about me growing up. It should be very interesting to a lot of people. In the mean time, train hard. It’s worth it! - Your President, Ford (555A)

’m wondering if an interactive online issue, with exclusive video and secret links, would turn these bimonthly projects into a commodity though don’t think any online issue will ever see near as many eyes as a printed version. And not because the content isn’t there. The first few hare scrambles in the new year have put our Florida talent up against some of the hottest competition and everyone has a story. There’s more to come in the April issue about having a story. The FTR President even opens up a little. fter an almost 10year hiatus, my FTR magazine recently came in the mail. At once, I remembered the days of flopping down on the couch to see if I made it into the race photos, or standing at the kitchen table to double-check if my name was spelled right in the results, on the right bike! I still loved flipping through the February issue the same! It’s a joy to know the mailman, if briefly, had to glance at the thing long enough to deliver it. “Who Are You”
orner
Chaplain’s
The Lord has made me very grateful that at last you have thought about me once again. Actually, you were thinking about me all along, but you didn’t have any chance to show it. I am not complaining about having too little. I have learned to be satisfied with whatever I have. I know what it is to be poor or to have plenty, and I have lived under all kinds of conditions. I know what it means to be full or to be hungry, to have too much or too little. Christ gives me the strength to face anything.
March, what a great month! I know you all remember what happens this month. It’s my birthday. (Please feel free to send cash, check, or money orders...just kidding.) What you may not know is that it’s my wife Ragan’s birthday as well. Actually, our birthdays are separated by one day plus a year. Do you know how long I had to search to find a woman whose birthday was that close to mine? My pick-up line was, “Hey baby, when’s your birthday?” I’m just kidding. Actually, God brought us together more than 20 years ago and for that I am grateful. During the month of March we also celebrate another event, the birth of Off-Road Racing Ministries. I guess I actually should apologize because I had told some folks that we will be 10 years old this month when actually we will be launching into our ninth year, not tenth. I guess that is why I am riding in the Super Senior Class. I can’t even remember how old I am. So, I’m sorry for the miss information. We began Off-Road Racing Ministries (affectionately know as ORRM) the first week of March (aka Bike Week), in 2003. However, that was not my first encounter with FTR. Actually, my first race was in the beginner class around 1997. If you were involved with FTR in the late ‘90’s and early 2000’s you would probably remember me from my connection with the River City Dirt Riders. At that time that I was heavily involved in the leadership of that organization. Though I was racing very little, my enjoyment came from the camaraderie of the club (those lifelong friends) and putting on our many events. Those were some fun times. Once Off-Road Racing Ministries was a couple years old, we soon discovered that our devotion to the FTR Series was going to consume an enormous amount of our time. Since then we have enjoyed the years of service but more importantly we have enjoyed the people. I recently had a friend ask me to remind the families of FTR about one of the ministries that we started a few years back called Rider Relief. Because we are a non-profit entity, over the years clubs and individuals have donated to Rider Relief as our local injured rider’s fund. Those who donate can claim that money on their tax information at the end of the year. The funds that come into Rider Relief are kept in a separate account, managed by a group of men (that want to stay anonymous) who are very particular about how it is spent. It is used only for the specific purpose of helping riders or the families of riders who have been hurt. I am very grateful to those who have supported, as well as those FTR members who have managed, the Rider Relief account. If you would like to donate to that fund, it is very easy to do. Just make the check out to Off-Road Racing Ministries/Rider Relief. It’s that simple. With

fuel now at $3.55 a gallon (a .20 cent jump in a week) and rising, it is going to be a rough series to finish out. I feel that folks are only going to do what is absolutely necessary when it comes to spending; and I can’t blame them. We too have had to go into survival mode. Nevertheless, I want to encourage you not forget about the Lord. The Lord has not forgotten you. He is waiting for you to trust Him. I’m not saying that once you trust the Lord you will become problem free. No. God does not work that way. Let me share a brief passage from the Bible. It is found in Philippians 4:10-13. Whenever I feel like whining about my circumstances Paul has a wonderful way of putting things into perspective. As you read these words don’t forget that Paul, once a wealthy and powerful man, is now in a Roman prison writing to encourage his friends in a distant city. You can read the entire story in your Bible, but Paul’s point is that no matter what happens to us Christ can give us the strength to face it. He did not say that no matter what problem you face, God will take it away. I think that is where people become confused and discouraged about how God operates. God is not a “sugar daddy” that gives you a worry free ride through life. I can assure you that once you trust Christ, you will not wake up the next day with more money than you can spend and all your problems having disappeared. That won’t happen. However, once you trust Christ, you will be a changed person. Your greatest struggle will be within yourself. We all have a sin nature and that nature says, “I want to do things my way.” That is normal. You have had it all your life; every single one of us. We all have lived in a state of rebellion since birth. No one taught you to be disobedient toward your parents. No one taught you to be mean toward your brother of sister. Remember when you would be fighting with your brother, sister, or a friend and your mother would shout at you and say, “QUIT BEING SO HATEFUL!” No one taught you (or me) to be that way. It is our sin nature. In technical terms it is called, original sin. It’s not something that you can get rid of. It is a part of every single human being. Why does God allow it to exist? That’s a great question. The answer is: God did not want to create a planet of robots. He gave us all a free choice. We choose either our selves (meaning our own path and our own ways) or we choose Him (meaning the plan He has for us). Thankfully millions and millions have chosen Him. However, there are many who choose to reject Him. I have friends that choose to reject God and His plan of salvations for their life. I’m not mad at them. I pray for them. I hope that one day, before they meet Him face to face, that they will have a personal encounter with Him in this life. That is why OffRoad Racing Ministries exists. Like Paul wrote in the passage above, we hope to encourage you toward Christ. Remember, no one can make that decision for you. Therefore, as long as God allows, I will continue to pray for you (my friends) and pray that God will reveal Himself to you as only He can. I thank you for your friendship for the last eight years. Sincerely, your racing buddy. Andy Dickson

Banquet details and discussion: President met with Carol Preston (Banquet Chairperson) and determined that the date has not been set yet. Our contract stipulates a different date than the one that was presented to the previous EC, but the hotel reports that their customer with that date may give it up and we can have it. If they do not then we are obligated to have the banquet on the contract date at the end of August. By the end of next week they will know for sure. IV New Business: 15th race issue: Mike - Motion to allow Big Scrub Trail Riders to move their hare scrambles date to April 1-2, and to award Old School Dirt Riders a sanction for the 15th FTR hare scrambles on May 14-15 contingent upon the date not being required as a rain date for a previously scheduled and cancelled hare scrambles. Jonny-second Unanimously accepted BOD member proposed by Mike Belle: Mike - Motion for the EC to appoint Randy Rash to the vacant seat on the Board of Directors for Area #13. Jonny-second After considerable discussion, a consensus was reached that an Area Director had to be elected by members within that geographical area, and that the EC did not have the authority to appoint an Area Director Mike-rescinded the motion Electronic scoring issues: Scoring issues at the recent hare scrambles were discussed. It was agreed that the HS Chair and other members of the EC should look into these issues at the next hare scrambles, and determine if equipment or software problems need to be corrected, if scoring personnel need additional training and supervision, or if new procedures need to be instituted to increase the speed and efficiency of the posting and reporting of scores. One solution is the addition of a Help File to the sign-up software to help workers in the trailer. Secretary suggested that Tim Nordle, based on analysis of the contracts of Business manager and Scorekeeper, should be preparing class counts and confirming that electronic entries agree with entry forms, and report these numbers to the Business Manager. Tim should also be able to directly submit results to the website and the magazine. President reported that webmaster had been informed that he could accept information from Tim as long as Tim copied the Business Manager. EC members agreed that we need to learn and be aware of these issues, and to help develop a solution to them. A group will take time this weekend to determine the real issues at hand, and offer possible solutions to the issues, such as help files built in the software, written instructions to help process training and guidance, updated software, etc‌ Hare Scrambles Chair asked for input regarding Junior riders that go to a Sunday time slot and then March 2011 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | 11
January Executive Committee Meeting Minutes want to come back to Junior. Historically this has not been allowed and the book does not address this. EC instructed HS Chair to take the issue to his committee and then come back to the EC. Ken Kloza MX Chair “Future of MX series this year”: MX Chair reported that MX Committee has voted to end the MX season for this competition year with 6 events due to the lack of rider participation at FTR MX events. Discussion Ken - Motion to end the FTR MX season for the 10-11 competition year effective immediately; waive the minimum number of events required for the FTR Motocross Championship Series (Chapter IX Motocross Rules, Paragraph A.2 of FTR Rulebook); count 6 events run to date as the complete season; and that year-end class standings will be based on current MX rules (Chapter IX Motocross Rules, Paragraph B.1.). Mike-second Unanimously accepted Jonny - Motion to provide all BoD members to have “view only” access to the QuickBooks account. Ford-second After considerable discussion about exactly what data or information might be accessible, it was decided to table the motion until the Treasurer and Secretary could report back on levels of access and security that can be utilized to protect sensitive customer and vendor information. RCDR request of giving up date for benefit: Vice President reported the receipt of a request from River City Dirt Riders wanting to give up their enduro sanction and FTR picking up responsibility for running the event as an FTR benefit. The EC needs more information to act on this request. The EC agreed to have the Enduro Chair get with RCDR to determine details about what they are offering, what is the cost to FTR, is it advisable to take on this as the dates on the schedule may not support time frames to pull it off, possible low turnout at that time of the year, who will be responsible for layout and event management, etc. Jack - Motion to adjourn Ken-second Meeting adjourned at 11:30 p.m. Submitted by Deborah Broderick FTR Secretary

Jonny’s concerns about the use of Roberts Rules of Order for all the meetings of FTR. Discussion on the subject of chairman of committee roles and how they are being applied within FTR. No problems were found. Discussion moved on. III. Mike Belle’s (HS Chairman) proposed emergency rule change: Proposal #3 Reason for Rule change proposal: The proposed change / amendment are regarding the safety of the peewee and super peewee quad riders. The current rule places both classes ranging from 50cc to 90cc quads practicing at the same time. During this season we have had a consistently large turnout for quads. There have been in excess of 10+ peewee quads and 10+ super peewee quads, placing 20+ quads from 50cc – 90cc on the track at the same time. Parents have expressed concern throughout the season regarding the tightness of the tracks and lack of areas for safe passing and have taken it upon themselves to split the 15 minute practice time in half to resolve the safety issue as easily as possible. This quick fix however gives each class a practice time of only 7 ½ minutes. In order to give the riders adequate practice time and the parents’ peace of mind I am requesting individual practice times for each class. Current Rule: Chapter VI | Hare Scrambles Rules C. Proposal #2
Reason for Rule change proposal: Large number of specialty racers Sunday morning has resulted in as many as 35 racers on Row 2(SSenA and Mas A) and over 40 racers on Row 6 (Mas B and Golden Mas A). These large numbers are considered a safety hazard. Currently, the starters are splitting row 6 into two starts which effectively makes 12 rows. Current Rule: Chapter VI Hare Scrambles Rules C. Super peewee quad practice 9:45 – 10:00 am Bike practice (big track) 10:00 – 10:30 am A Motion was made by Trey Heath and seconded by Carol Preston to pass this as an emergency rule change to be implemented ASAP. The motion passed with greater than 2/3 of the vote and will be forwarded to the executive committee for their approval.
Proposal #4
Reason for Rule change proposal: This rule needs to be deleted because it is was a duplicate of Chapter VII, C Rider Advancement, #6 which was changed to the current version last season (referenced below). It was not realized by the committee at the time that this rule was duplicated exactly in two different places. Current Rule: Chapter VII Hare Scrambles Scoring A. General 8. Any rider that “Overall High Points” a race will be promoted to the AA class, effective the next race. 9. Riders shall be awarded points if they complete 1 lap or more. 10. Saturday race, Youth and Peewee Quads, Vintage, Evolution, Beginners, Junior, Mini’s or Peewee finishes cannot be counted towards hare scrambles team trophy competition. New Rule: Chapter VII Hare Scrambles Scoring A. General 8. Any rider that “Overall High Points” a race will be promoted to the AA class, effective the next race. (Delete) 8. Riders shall be awarded points if they complete 1 lap or more. 9. Saturday race, Youth and Peewee Quads, Vintage, Evolution, Beginners, Junior, Mini’s or Peewee finishes cannot be counted towards hare scrambles team trophy competition. A motion was made by Ford Snodgrass to accept the proposal and it was seconded by Donny Richardson. The motion passed and will be published in the magazine and presented for a second vote at a subsequent committee meeting.
Proposal #5
Purpose: To give kids who have play bikes like the Honda XR series and the Yamaha TTR series a chance to compete in the Mini (B, C) classes with 19 inch front wheels. Chapter III General Rules D. Rider Classification Current Rule: HARE SCRAMBLES
March 2011 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | 19

New Rule: HARE SCRAMBLES Division/Class Displacement classes Age Mini (B,C) 0-85 cc 2 Stroke 86-150 cc 4 Stroke 17” wheels **** 9 thru 14* **** Trail bikes like the Honda XR, CRF150F and Yamaha TTR series may compete with front wheels up to 19 inches in the Mini classes. This does not apply to race oriented bikes. A motion was made by Trey Heath to accept the proposal and it was seconded by Randy Rash. The motion passed and will be published in the magazine and presented for a second vote at a subsequent committee meeting. A question came up concerning Junior riders who move to a Sunday class and whether they can then return to race in the Jr. class. It was explained that the HSC had made a ruling on this issue at the meeting on 5/7/2005. Ford Snodgrass made a motion that we change that clarification to allow any rider to enter any class that he is eligible to enter. The motion was seconded by Bill Jenkins, but was defeated when brought to a vote. After a little more research by the scorekeeper, it was brought to the attention of the committee that our software may not allow riders to enter more than one race per day, and it was decided to leave things as they are for the time being. Paul Lucas submitted a petition to the committee to be allowed to drop from the “AA “division to the “A” division. He explained that he had only entered and started in on race in the “AA” class and only did so because he lost a bet with his son. He got a flat tire in that race and never finished a lap. He normally rides SSA, but wants to be able to enter an “A” displacement class to race with his son. Jack Terrell made a motion to allow the petition, and it was seconded by Ford Snodgrass. The motion passed and Paul will be allowed to race in the “A” division the next time he enters a displacement class race. The meeting was adjourned at 8:39 pm Mike Belle, Hare Scrambles Committee Chairman

For Larry, it’s not all about taking a trophy home or earning a championship. “I’m not that competitive,” he said. “It’s more of a social thing for me. FTR is pretty much family. I’ve got a ton of good memories and I’ve always been appreciative. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” When he first started riding “years ago,” Larry said his brother-in-law had a Maico shop in West Palm Beach. “We motocrossed a little bit,” Larry said, “but to be honest, what got me into the bikes was me and two buddies of mine went and saw On Any Sunday.” Life “literally” changed right then. “We walked out of the theater drove to the motorcycle shop and bought motorcycles,” he said. “I’ve been hooked on it ever since.” In those “hay-days,” Larry said motocross was “exploding. “It got really super competitive and there were like 16 and 17 year old kids that would run over their grandmother to get a plastic trophy,” he said. Another friend got Larry into putting on an Enduro, which he still actually enjoys doing. “The mechanics of getting everything laid out and getting everything done,” he said, “I enjoy that. That’s a big part of it for me.” An “Enduro guy originally,” Larry said, when he first started racing, FTR was Enduro only. “I love Enduros,” he said, “That’s kind of where I got my start. The first one I raced was the Tallahassee Enduro and that was back in ’76, I believe.” Then FTR started sanctioning hare scrambles, and Larry said he got a little concerned. “But it worked out fine,” he said. “I hate to see what’s happening to motocross because to me the motocross is technically not FTR – it’s not off-road – but still it’s a venue for people and family members. I hate to see us lose anything that gives people an opportunity to ride.” In the past, he said he was worried about the hare scrambles because he thought FTR was overextending itself. “I thought hare scrambles was kind of a diversion,” he said. “I didn’t think it was something that people would be serious about, which shows how much I know.” After more than thirty years of putting on races, Larry said he’s glad to see FTR grow. “It’s grown from a grass roots organization where people were more concerned about the quality of the events,” he said. “I was really disturbed about all the politics and stuff that went on last year, and I’m glad to see us return to a little more focus. It seems now we’re more focused on making the organization more financially sound.” Importantly, Larry said he remembers one thing: “Any large diverse group of people have different opinions and whether people like to admit it or not, there’s a lot of ego involved in motorcycle riders,” he said, “but we’ve all got a common goal here. Recently, he’s started using the Internet to keep in touch with his family and friends. “I like Facebook. I love the communication,” he said. “And hardly anybody ever uses it. I mean it’s free communication.” And while he doesn’t “really” have any sponsors, Larry said the only thing he’s ever picked up is the free graphics from for his first four stroke , the “Jaegerbomb” - a KTM 400 with a Rekluse clutch. “A true lazy man’s bike,” he said. “Plus, you can lock up the back brake and if you don’t have the clutch pulled in, it still doesn’t kill the engine.” This hare scramble season, he jumped from Master C to Golden Master B, but he waited for a few races before making the move. “I wanted to hang around for a couple of races and ride with Rocky Gavins,” he said. “And he spanked me pretty good so I figured I’d go ahead on.”
ON THE COVER

y day, he’s a corrections officer on the psychiatric ward for the Florida Department of Corrections. On the weekends, at the races, where it’s all about family and camaraderie, Larry Roberts, an FTR member since 1975, said he enjoys hanging out and socializing. That’s what he likes most about the organization.

Enduro #5 Files Boy, were we treated, and I mean treated to a wonderful Enduro in Earhardt, S.C. The Family Riders were truly blessed this year with absolutely stunning weather on the day of the event. The temp at 9 am was at a cool 37 degrees, a bit nibble-y for those of us from Florida. (Not that we have not had some really cool mornings in Florida, lately.) I watched row 3 take off with Jimmy Pitts, Robbie Carstens, Dan Litchtenwalter, Alton (Pokey) Snellgrove and Richard Edwards. I was grinning from ear to ear because I was on Row 47. Forty-four minutes later, once the sun was up in the sky and the weather was absolutely perfect, I took off on a wonderful adventure! I was gifted a row that I would refer to as a stacked row. We had all A Riders on our row: Mark Hutchinson, Vet A (SETRA), Jake Ponder A 250, (SETRA) Mike Goodman, A Open (FTR) and myself in the Senior – old man - A class. We were also supposed to have Amanda Mastin on our row but she was not there (possibly recovering from the ISDE). This was not by some plan, at least not our plan, but what a freight train of a row. We took off directly from the start and it was clear that we were going to be in top gear for the remainder of the event. We had not gone 1 mile into the first “free territory” warm up when Mike Goodman hit a root directly in front of me and his big Husaberg took a terrible
detour off the trail directly into a tree. I really have a personal attachment to that situation, as I broke my femur one sunny day in some “free territory.” Not really that funny. I digress. With Mark and Jake out front hare scrambling through some wide open fields, and Mike and I in tow, we were really hauling the mail, until at all the same moment, we realized that the arrows we were following were for a designated horse trail and not the Enduro trail. This was a wonderful start to our free ride to the first restart. We immediately turned around and headed back to the last known Moose arrow to get bck on the Enduro Trail. We made it to the restart with 4 minutes to spare. We then proceeded into the first timed section and it was a blast. We were really able to get a rhythm going and simply charged through to the Out check. The lead on our row must have changed 10 times as the mistakes were small but just enough for the 3 riders in tow to shoot by and assume a new pecking order. We came out of that section only seconds apart, but some of us missed the turn of the card and were gifted an additional minute on our score. That is how the card falls some times. Family Riders treated us to some of the most beautiful trail that we have seen in years. I really mean that. They had some flowing pine sections connected to some of the tightest, I had a real good bar-banging sections that time and had a good result (64) for an one could imagine. They Enduro novice. I will be back. See all you did a superb guys at the next one job of mixing it up so that | Great course! Great Weather! Great you were not People! | Note to self: trapped in first gear for Cut 3” off each side of my bars next time endless miles. The trail I do that one. It was a good time, but a would open little short (55 miles?) Very friendly club! up so that you could air it | The weather out and then was super, the course was in superb shape it would drop you back into but there wasn’t much thrill factor (Turn some really technical in this rut, turn between these two trees, stuff - where do it again) Maybe FTR should look at passing only something that provides some more punch happened when the (challenge) on the schedule for the racers lead person would allow it.

that venture out of state. - Joey Young
I would really like to thank all of the folks on the rows ahead of us because they were all very gracious and yielded to our freight train, allowing us to make good time in the tight sections. The race was fairly uneventful until the 15-mile section going into the gas. We took off from the restart and it was a fast, fast, pine section where we were running the rows. Mark and Jake took off in front of me and Mike came into the section behind me. Again, not 1 mile into this fast pine section, Mike decided, apparently, that he did not want to be at the back and he made his move. All of a sudden, I see Mike and the big 570 Husaberg over about 2 pine rows from the one that we were on. Mind you, we were on the marked trail. Mike has his Berg peeled back and he is going what appeared to be 60 miles an hour down his pine row. All of a sudden, he decides to merge back into the marked trail but does not see fit to slow down to do this maneuver. What happens next was nothing less than spectacular. All I saw were elbows, knees and helmet flying in a summersault toward the trail and a big blue-and-white motorcycle doing an end-over-end flip! Mike landed in the trail, directly in front of me, face down in the dirt. I truly felt like this was the end of Mike’s Enduro and the end of my Enduro as I would be the one now carrying Mike to the hospital. Very quickly, Mike got up on his knees and was trying to catch his breath. I asked him if he was OK and he simply nodded. I asked him again if he was OK and he said, “Go ahead.” So I did. Here is the amazing part. Nearing the end of this fifteen-mile section of trail, with mixed tight and open sections, I heard a big thumper coming up on me in the trail. Just before the check, Mike comes blowing past me and down the trail again he goes. Boy, is he an Iron Man, or what (a little crazy, as well)? The rest of the Enduro was absolutely beautiful, and we made it back to camp just as Family Riders was getting the scores up on the board. We commend them for doing a smashing job with the entire event, but the scoring was spot on as far as timing! Thank you for the efficient job! You all rock! We then loaded our trucks and trailers and said our final thank yous and goodbyes and pointed the rigs back to sunny Florida! We will be back next year to have a blast again!
Thank you, Family Riders!

“A Father and Daughter Go Racing” An area near Lake Okeechobee is the location for this race’s report. The terrain is flat as you might imagine with some sand, mud, (I’ll get to that part later,) palm trees and open fields thrown in. The Palm Beach Track and Trail club is the host as all the proceeds go to the Florida Trail Riders organization. PBT&T club was one of the first off-road clubs in Florida to call home in the early sixties. They disappeared for many years but now local riders are trying to get it started again and hosting this event was their re-introduction to the FTR family. Course was 7 miles on Sat and 11 on Sunday. Our Junior Girls racer is currently on the sideline due to her grades. Missing 2 races has been hard for her but Haley has been re-motivated to do the work necessary to get back on the track. She did volunteer to work with the pee-wee races and had a great time and made some new friends. My race started off well. I was 4 out of 24 going into the first set of corners. We wound back and forth across an open field for three-quarters of a mile before we dove into the woods. I managed to pass Dave Davis (48C) just before the tight stuff so now I’m up to third. I simply can’t run the pace of the top couple of guys. Robert Downs (172C) goes by and I settle into fourth place at the end of the first lap. I came up on a straggler early in the second lap and I made the mistake of taking too long to pass him. This let Dave (48C) close back up on me. I can hear him, but I’m not making a mistake in the tight brush. I know it’s hard to pass in this stuff, and the power of my 300 helped keep him at bay when the course would open back up. He apparently went through 3 tearoffs in the first lap from my roosting. There were a few mud holes scattered throughout the course. If you were smart and skirted the edges, you could make your way around, albeit slowly. For some reason, I’m not sure why exactly, as we came up on one in particular I saw a set of tracks through the middle and went for it. A course worker saw my attempt and gave me the universal “twisting of the throttle to the stops” motion and I reacted with a fist full and dropped into the blackness and this where I come to a screeching halt. The throttle stayed pinned but the fact I had now buried the bike up to the foot pegs brought about a feeling of fear and anger at myself. I knew better than this, but here I am. I hopped off and tried to push the bike forward while gassing it but nothing was moving. I was stuck. I attempted to pull the back end of the bike up but it wouldn’t come up. Here is where my mud hole guardian’s jump in. I managed to plead, “I’m in fourth place guys. Can you please help?” One guy helped me get the back end up and onto firmer mud. I then tried to start the bike but every time I kicked down, my foot would slip off the kick starter as my left leg is also buried. Several stabs later, I was humbled to ask if one of them could get their longer legs over the top and get it started. I managed to stagger off finally with the wheels rolling but out of energy. If I’ve learned one thing in racing it’s that you have to recover on the fly. I knew every second I was sitting still, I was losing ground and guys behind me were gaining it. I spent the rest of the lap trying to get my energy back as I rolled through the chicane in sixth. I had lost 2 positions while mired in the mud, but it could have been way worse without that help. I wasn’t too excited about the third lap. I’m exhausted. I guess the cold I had early in the week wasn’t helping any either. As I passed by the infamous mud hole again I shouted to the workers: “I learned my lesson the last time,” as they laughed and I took the smarter way around. Toward the end of the lap Charles Nix (20C) came by me and I had nothing for him. I rolled through the scoring chicane for seventh place. I wasn’t too happy with that, but I’m really excited about the next race as I know if I can cut down on the big mistakes I’ll be back in the battle for wood! - Troy Stainbrook

Scores - HS #9 - TCTR - Brighton FL - Jan. 22-23
From the Forum: “The track was loads of fun and the only complaint I could possibly have is that I’m too slow to run three laps.” - “Everything went smooth, the course was very well marked, fast in places and tight, too.” - “Thanks TCTR great job! Well laid out and easy to follow! I’ve always liked your start (wide/long) your trail, jump & ditch obstacle’s and those 5th gear straights!” - “Also, thanks TCTR for the neat log pyramid obstacle. It was well built and fun to ride over. The angle was so perfect, I thought you might have had an Engineer type of person angle it up. You would just hit it and it popped the bike up and over, very fun.” HS #9 - Brighton Hare Scramble

Scores - HS #10 - FTR Benefit - Okeechobee, FL - Feb. 5-6
From the Forum: “I loved that course - the deep powdery whoops were taxing but saw some wiser riders run the outsides, much easier that way... It was obvious a bunch of work went into this place.” - “The course was marked very, very well and the open stuff was lots of fun.” - “Awesome race, liked the variety, potty on the line...not much mud.” - “Tough, sandy whoops got the best of me (and my left shoulder) twice!” - “That track was awesome from a quad racers stand point. I love the tight flowing portions and the wide open parts were great. I wish we could have raced for 3 hours.” HS #10 - FTR Benefit

Scores - HS #11 - SADRA - Ona, FL - Feb. 19-20
From the Forum: “That was the hardest win I’ve ever earned and I am absolutely exhausted and beat up 6 hours later. I had
to lay on the floor in my van and have a friend drive us home because I honestly thought I was dying.” - “the roots were downright brutal. Took a loop or so to figure out the right combo of speed and technique to get over them better. I have only done 4 events so I’m hardly the authority on what is what.” - “Good pre-ride for the GNCC next month for those who are doing it.” - “It was great for the 3/4 of a mile I raced until my rear sub-frame broke. I know - stand up more.” - “I’m still learning... riding as fast as I can on a 24 yr old bike. I had the most fun so far this season at this race. Loved the mix of trail conditions.” HS #11 - Sand Slingers Legacy HS 9
