hello... What better to start out the semester than getting to know my classmates, or better yet allowing them to get to know me better. This module has information about my goals and aspirations, and a little bit of my background. Who knows, maybe we have something in common.

why study design? From a young age, I have been in love with all things art and design. I believe there is a way to educate people with their surroundings. I want to be a part of this process, the process of teaching others with design. There is also something about the idea that an individuals mood can be altered by their surroundings, which is probably my biggest inspiration.

background Although I was born here in Miami, I was raised on a small island in the Caribbean, Antigua. Both of my parents were born and raised there and currently reside on the island. Although our primary language is English, we Antiguans often find ourselves speaking in our native dialect; I hope to pick up a little bit of Spanish while I live here in Miami. Art is something that they require to be taken at school in Antigua all throughout your education. I guess it may be to spark some imagination among the young minds. I think that I truly fell in love with art when I reached to middle school when a particular teacher took an interest in my potential. I think she wanted me to pursue an art degree but I never though I was good enough for that. I discovered architecture as a way to combine my love for art and my love for my country in hopes that I would later return to better design on my island. FIU has always been my dream school regardless of what I would chose to pursue. When I discovered the immaculate program that they had to offer I immediately applied and had the full support from my entire family. I think they are part of the reason why I’ve made it so far, along with my passion for what I am doing.

travel
REASONS When I was younger, I used to travel a lot within the
Caribbean for tennis. The only other times I travelled back then was for family get togethers here in Miami once in a while. It is only when I started university where I got the travel bug and began to explore my horizons…for educational purposes of course.
MOTIVES When you live on an island there isn’t usually much
motivation to travel to other islands but I was excited for the experience. After your first time, you become intrigued by the different cultures even if they are slight. I actually think that some of my biggest adventures happened on my very island. I love to discover Antigua’s hidden secrets, after all my island harbors 365 beaches; I hope to visit them all one day.
THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE OF TRAVELLING IS DEFINITELY GETTING TO EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENT CULTURES and DESIGN.
conclusion I find myself drawn to the cooler colors on the wheel, and that is when I actually choose color. As seen especially in my choice of clothing, I prefer more neutral colors: black and white. However in the work that I do, I try to escape my comfort zone by using colors that I am not used to. I imagine that my preferences are due to my background especially the fact that I spent most of my time surrounded by nature and the ocean, cool colors. This assignment has been an opening into the world of color through a topic that I know best, myself.

rietveld schroder house Gerrit Rietveld Utretch, Netherlands
Precedents are constantly seeked out by designers. This module explores the Rietveld Schroder House as a means of discovering color. This project was one of 9 projects given to the class to chose from which were recognized by the academy for their contributions to color in architecture.
gerrit rietveld 1888 - 1964
Gerrit Rietveld, born in Utretch in 1888, was an artist, architect and painter. He was considered one of the most important designers of the 20th century. In his early years he worked in his fathers workshop until he was fifteen years old to continue on a design path and learned technical draftsmanship from the architect, P.J.C. Klaarhamer.
In 1919, Gerrit Rietveld had joined Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, and other artists to found "De Stijl". Their works are strictly nonrepresentational, rather they simplify geometric shapes in arrangements of horizontal and vertical planes merged with a primary color palette(red, yellow and blue) along with black and white to portray their ideas. De Stijl applied these principles to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, such as furnishings and architecture. One of the first and most famous projects being the Schroder House
"striving towards artistic purity and austerity.
"
furniture
Gerrit Rietveld opened his own furniture workshop in Utretch. His furniture designs ususlaly led to several housing project which he designed in Neo-Plastic style. the designs took advantage of free space and showed a dynamic understanding of a variety of spatial ideas. In 1919 Gerrit Rietveld designed the prototype of his famous “Red and Blue” chair. In 1933 , he designed the “Zig-Zag” chair; four simple boards fitted together at oblique angles.
schroder house 1925 There is also a sense of simplicity with the choice of color used for the exterior with minimum use of red and yellow to allude to the color on the interior.
The Schroder House was the only project designed in complete accordance with the styles of De Stijl using pure colors and forms. Gerrit Rietveld however created his own meaning with the use of straight lines and rectangular planes of the various architectural structural elements, slabs, posts and beams. This balanced manner was also used in the design of his furniture.
color palette
black red yellow blue There is a sense of simplicity portrayed in the color palette especially because the main colors used are primary colors. By using these colors, the designer evokes a variety of emotions among the users. Blue to evoke a calm and soothing mood. Yellow to evoke happiness, and red which can mean a variety of things depending on the user.
color palette
Although the majority of the colors used were the primary colors which have no compliments, there is an abundance of contrasts provided throughout the space through the incorporation of white on the vertical planes. black white yellow blue
conclusion the simplicity of the space from the geometric forms to the primary color palette are contrasted by the abundance of white throughout the space. Gerrit Rietveld successfully transferred the ideas and practices of the De Stijl into the project through a variety of spatial ideas.
m.3 film + color
LIFE OF PI Film is a medium where directors can design a scene to evoke emotions among thei viewers. I chose Life of Pi because it was a book that i read as a child, and I could not wait to see the color palettes that were used to bring the story to life.
SUMMARY Life of Pi is a beautiful movie with well put together scenes. The plot is about an indian man telling his story about an experience in his childhood where he lost his family and ended up trapped in the middle of the ocean with a tiger for months. The movie touches on different religions which is relevant because our protaganist Pi, practices three of them: Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. The religious meaning behind these colors connect directly with my interpretation of the movie. Blue in this case is associated with truth. Much of the movie takes place on the water, so it only makes sense that they portray the ocean in its may different fhades and colors.
color palette light yellow
light orange
orange
brown
This scene had the most impact on me because this is the scene where Pi seems most hopeless. The selection of color is pertenant to the meaning of the scene. Yellow is the color of happiness, and optimism, of enlightenment and creativity. Orange is associated with hope which is contrasting with the idea in this scene especially when this is the color of the tiger, the source of Pi’s troubles. Brown is the color of growth and this is a reoccurring motif in the movie where both characters have learning experiences through the movie.
color + balance This module was aimed at understanding the different components of balance as dug deeper into distinguishing between symmetry, assymetry, and radial balance. By the end I was able to discuss how visual balance is a relationship between the observer and the observed. I now know the types of color balance: value contrast [light and dark], hue balance [complimentary], and intensity contrast [bright and dull], and I finally understand the concepts of color within the 3D environment and identify the horizontal and vertical possibilities.

color + healthcare This module was aimed at understanding the different components of balance as dug deeper into distinguishing between symmetry, assymetry, and radial balance. By the end I had investigated some of the different aspects of color and the ways it is perceived by people, read up on some theories and studies regarding effects of color on the psychological, emotional and physical health of people and was able to recognize the ways color can help with safety, orientation and navigation in a healthcare facility.
m.5
color + rhythm This module allowed me to be able to discuss the concept of rhythm, especially what it is, where it originates, and how it is used in design. I can also now distinguish between repetition, alternation, progression, continuation, and radiation.
m.6
m.7 color + emphasis
CONTRAST OF HUE COLOR
A contrast of hue is created with the use of colors that are opposite one another on the color wheel. The further away from each other they are, the higher the contrast of hue. This method creates focal points drawing your eye to the contrast. In this example, contrast of hue is created through the use of brass accents on the displays as well as the warm walnut wood against the black lacquer.
CONTRAST OF VALUE LIGHT VS. DARK Value is the apparent lightness or darkness of a color. According Ron Reed in the Color + Design textbook, “a light/dark contrast of black, gray, or white values can emphasize without the use of colors.
Mont Blanc brands their entire company on contrast of value. The majority of their advertisements are black and white which adds to their overall concept of being ‘timeless’. Much of this store features white and black walls to convey this concept.
CONTRAST OF A DESIGN FEaTURE SHAPE AND FORM
Emphasis can be established as heirarchy when presented in different shapes and forms. There is emphasis placed where orthogonal square shaped are, as this is where the product is diplayed. There is definition between the arbitrary black lacquer element and the natural wood display area.
CONTRAST OF TEXTURE SMOOTH VS. ROUGH
The designer of the mont blanc stores imagined them with a pure and uncluttered aesthetic. He paired the contrasting textures of black lacquer and organic wood. There is also a present of contast of texture on the floor wh certain parts of the floor have carpet instead of the wood flooring
FOCAL POINTS
A focal point is a single design element that receives the greatest visual emphasis in a space. In this space, as soon as you enter, your eyes immediately deviate towards the black laquer feature wall that lies behind the reception desk. There is also a slight drop in the ceiling that is emphasized by cover lighting. This wall not only has advertisements of the company but also displays some of the brand’s products.
color + proportion + scale In this module I was able to understand that using a proportion system can provide an accurate color proportions. We discussed the difference between scale and proportion and accepted the fact that building models to study things is an effective strategy. We utilized the repetition of color to unify a design and implemented color gradation in a design to distinguish similar but different elements.

Variety is the principle of design that is concerned with the combination of one or more color elements with shape, form, pattern, and texture to create diversity and contrast in an interior space.

m.10
Discussion The Setai Miami features a covered exterior space with a central water elements. The overall design concept of The Setai, is a philosophy that combines South Beach’s Art Deco architecture, particularly its influence in Asia. The colors used in this space encompass this idea using colors that have a similar tone. According to Chapter 8, order without variety can be boring, and variety without order can be chaotic but in this space it is done beautifully. The space has the presence of all the elements that create color and variety which are color and line, color and shape, colo rand texture, and color and pattern.
color + line Line is the conncetion betweeen two points in a space. Color and line can be seen in the space through the linear wooden ceiling elements the run horizontally to not only emphasize the water below but to inadvertently give emphasis to the circulation paths on the edges.
color + shape Each type of shape seems to have its own color; long and linear holds the burnt brown color while square shapes have a lighter cream color.
color + texture This is shown through the combination of smooth textures from the sculptural pieces and the rough tectures of the walls
color + pattern There is not much pattern seen immediately however the planters for the palm trees are placed in a pattern.

Discussion color + line
Line is the connection betweeen two points in a space and black is used to connect smaller areas of the space through line, forming squares of the back wall of the bar.
color + shape Color combines with shape many in the forms of the shelvig and the bar. It seems as though black is used to emphasize the orthogonal nature of these elements of the space. On the shelves, the black matte material outlines the bronze material. In contrast however, black is also used to represent the cylindrical shapes of the light fixtures that hang above the bar.
The bar of The Setai has a different feel from the first area, whereas it uses more modern looking materials. Although it contrasts the idea of natural materials, it is still heavily influenced by Asian design.
color + texture The floor is where not only color but also texture differs from the rest of the space. A natural stone is used here to contrast the smooth textures of the counter and the walls. The bar also shows a contrast of color and texture where part of it has a gold finish while the other is a black wood.
color + pattern
On the back bar color is used to emphasize the Asian influenced pattern. A bronze color is used to not only give emphasis to the pattern but to also contrast the black matte material used everywhere else.

COLOR + RENDERING DOMINANT ACCENT 3 ACCENT 2
This image in my opinion is not what you see eveyday. Usually in a oceanic landscape setting, the water would be an element that pops out the most. However seeing that both the sky and the water take on more of a greyish tone, the greenery of the landscape takes precedence. Although this pciture may make some unsettled, I am quite calmed by the palette. In fact, I believe that a space, especially a living area can be made extremely pleasing to the eye with these colors.

antigua & barbuda Blue is said to represent hope and it so happens that Antigua is surrounded by lots of it in the form of the Caribbean Sea.
The lush landscape of our island is something that everyone who visits never forgets.
It is always sunny in Antigua as they always say. We always express this sunshine in everything we take part of as it is even represented on our flag.
Orange is seen in much of the food in Antigua, whether it be the fruits we pick from the trees or the fish we retrieve from the ocean.
The 7 point golden sun of the Antigua & Barbuda flag represents the dawn of a new era. The colour red, the life blood of slave forefathers and the dynamism of the people.
Blue represents hope. Red is a vibrant color that represents celebration and is often seen in the costumes of our yearly festival, Carnival.
Black will always be a part of our culture as to not forget where we came from.

Black represents the soil and African heritage. Gold, blue & white Antigua's and Barbuda's tourist attractions sun, sea and sand. The "V" formed by the red borders represent: "Victory at last."
COLOR + culture
india
Color has always been a large part of Indian consciousness. Everything has a deeper meaning that what is immediately perceived. Some of these meaning have derived from ancient traditions. Yellow and orange take shape of flowers that are present at almost every celebration. Deep hues of red are highly represented on the clothing of brides in this culture on their most important day. Color in India has, over time, become synonymous with religion – an expression of faith and beliefs. Unliked the Antiguan culture, black is not a color to be embraced but rather a color that represents evil. However, just like in the Antiguan culture, red is used to represent celebrations along with the blue hues.
Safron is a symbol of courage White represents peace and honesty Blue means vigilance, truth and loyalty. Green is a representation of hope, fertility, joy and love
conclusion This class has taught me so much about color, thikngs that i did not even know existed. I loved taking a second look into everyday life especially when coming to color. Movies, photography and especially architecture take on color as a huge aspect of what they are and it is very important that in this line of work we understand the different parts to it so that we can incorporate it into our work.
