The Roanoke Valley should expect activity to start within two or three months, said Noah Garrett, spokesperson for MCNC, the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina. MCNC, a nonprofit, operates the North Carolina Research and Education Network that connects schools, colleges and research institutions. A main fiber-optic line connected to this network will run through Littleton, Weldon, Jackson and Conway. “Having access to broadband Internet service is like having access to roads, water, jobs,” said Donna Sullivan, technical assistance director for the state broadband division in eastern North Carolina. “It’s an economic development tool.”

Sullivan spoke about the initiative at the Halifax County commissioners meeting last Monday. She said several residents have already contacted her about getting involved. Community members can help by expanding the data pool with surveys available online. Building demand for these high-speed services in communities helps drive supply, Sullivan said. At least 15 percent of households in Halifax County do not have adequate connection speeds of at least threemegabit per second downloads, as defined by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

This is a foolish and expensive waste of taxpayers’ money when government goes in direct competition with existing “tax base building” business. Wireless broadband is available virtually everywhere and at a very competitive price for the service through Verizon, Cricket, AT&T, and other wireless services. For a few dollars your can light up your whole house and up to 6 computers with wireless service by one incoming air card and a hub. I pay $60.00/mo. Governments are not suited to doing business much less competing with the businesses that make the commerce that pays for government operation. Log In to report.
