Triangle - The Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Raleigh Durham raised $5,000 for the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina at its June 9 annual giving back fundraising breakfast as that donation provides 20,000 meals. Corporate Social Responsibility is not just a branding exercise but is a concept that businesses are embracing as part of their growth strategy. At ACG’s final meeting before summer break, Ed Carney, Vice President and General Manager of Cisco Systems and Chairman of the Board of the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina, provided a perspective about how Cisco has embraced this philosophy as an integral part of its business strategy. Giving back is very core to the Cisco culture. Last year, this regional Food Bank distributed 41.5 million pounds of food, including 8 to 9 million pounds of produce. Currently, there are 550,000 at risk families with the potential for 900,000. Food Bank volunteers logged more than 147,000 hours in 2010 while serving 34 counties with a total staff of 75 for all those counties. Carney leads Cisco’s Enhanced Customer Aligned Testing Services (eCATS) organization in Customer Advocacy. eCATS unifies test engineering and architecture experts into a single team focused on working in tandem with Cisco and Enterprise Customer organizations to design validated Cisco solutions. These solutions improve the deployment success of Cisco products, services and architectures for the company’s most strategic global Enterprise Customers through a joint Cisco-Customer model that is foundational to the company’s next generation Enterprise Customer relationship. Among his many ancillary responsibilities, Carney sits on the Architecture Board of the company’s Enterprise Business Council – one of 11 corporate councils tasked with leading successful business change in line with the company’s key global strategies. He was also a Cisco Fellow with the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina – an independent, nationally recognized United States non-profit that uses advanced technologies and systems to improve learning and collaboration throughout the state’s research and education communities. MCNC Plans Video Upgrade on Statewide Education Network Thursday June 23, 2011 - 09:00 AM EDT PRNewsWire News Releases

Service advancements on NCREN include Cisco TelePresence technologies and other affordable next-gen video services

Released By MCNC

Share:

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MCNC announced today that the video services infrastructure on the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) is scheduled to be upgraded on July 1. MCNC has entered the final testing phases of Cisco TelePresence interoperability with H.323 point-topoint (standard on most desktops) and multipoint video services, and TelePresence Management System (TMS) scheduling. Also, a select pilot group is testing centrally-managed soft client licenses for additional devices including laptop and desktop computers and tablets. New services are scheduled to be widely available to NCREN users during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. As a result of these upgrades, MCNC will be able to provide several additional services to NCREN Video Service customers and to support the use of Cisco TelePresence across the statewide community. MCNC is providing the TelePresence infrastructure capabilities so schools need only to purchase the TelePresence screen or any H.323 compatible in-room devices.

The State Top Jobs Âť Upgraded shared services include: Cisco TelePresence room registration with the MCNC Video Call Manager, support for multipoint conferences with both Cisco TelePresence rooms and H.323 rooms in the same session, self-scheduling by NCREN Video Services customers, and end-point management for supported video room and desktop systems. In the coming months, MCNC also intends to offer an affordable managed desktop video services solution as part of the NCREN Video Services portfolio. "By facilitating real-time interaction and removing barriers to communication, Cisco TelePresence enriches learning and will help to scale expertise to classrooms in North Carolina from anywhere in the world," said Joe Novak, Cisco vice president and Cisco Research Triangle Park executive. "TelePresence brings educators and students together dynamically to build relationships and spark collaboration that leads to learning and innovation." The NCREN interactive video network handles more than 100 hours of classes, conferences and seminars each week. Video Services offers live streaming of sessions with storage capability for future viewing. And, because MCNC's video services also are able to integrate many commercially-available interactive video technologies into sessions, desktop videoconferencing can be incorporated into sessions with more traditional room-based systems when needed. This will allow education institutions to gain maximum return on their already-placed video investments and upgrade capabilities as budgets allow.

John Killebrew, MCNC's vice president of community support for NCREN, said the power of interactive video is creating a leading-edge learning environment in North Carolina as well as enabling research collaboration, seminars, online workshops, and many other applications easily facilitated by video. He noted several examples including how public and private universities are training elementary school science teachers, educational leaders are holding administrative meetings across the state to cut down on travel expenses, and how for several years students at Elizabeth City State University have been taking pharmacy classes from UNC Chapel Hill via the NCREN video network. "The number of K-20 education institutions utilizing video-based distance learning and online classes is expanding rapidly," said Killebrew. "These new services will allow the expansion of the use of video to accelerate and will keep costs of implementation affordable. This is especially vital during these challenging fiscal times." MCNC asked for volunteers from the NCREN video services community to participate in the testing and integration of the new video service improvements. Those participating institutions included Duke University, Elon University, N.C. Office of Information Technology Services, N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, N.C. State University, Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, Wake Forest University, and UNC Charlotte.

MCNC Plans Video Upgrade on Statewide Education Network Thursday June 23, 2011 - 09:00 AM EDT PRNewsWire News Releases

Service advancements on NCREN include Cisco TelePresence technologies and other affordable nextgen video services

Released By MCNC

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MCNC announced today that the video services infrastructure on the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) is scheduled to be upgraded on July 1. MCNC has entered the final testing phases of Cisco TelePresence interoperability with H.323 point-to-point (standard on most desktops) and multipoint video services, and TelePresence Management System (TMS) scheduling. Upgraded shared services include: Cisco TelePresence room registration with the MCNC Video Call Manager, support for multipoint conferences with both Cisco TelePresence rooms and H.323 rooms in the same session, self-scheduling by NCREN Video Services customers, and end-point management for supported video room and desktop systems. About MCNC MCNC is an independent, non-profit organization that employs advanced Internet networking technologies and systems to continuously improve learning and collaboration throughout North Carolina's K-20 education community. Upgraded shared services include: Cisco TelePresence room registration with the MCNC Video Call Manager, support for multipoint conferences with both Cisco TelePresence rooms and H.323 rooms in the same session, self−scheduling by NCREN Video Services customers, and end−point management for supported video room and desktop systems. In the coming months, MCNC also intends to offer an affordable managed desktop video services solution as part of the NCREN Video Services portfolio. "By facilitating real−time interaction and removing barriers to communication, Cisco TelePresence enriches learning and will help to scale expertise to classrooms in North Carolina from anywhere in the world," said Joe Novak, Cisco vice president and Cisco Research Triangle Park executive. "TelePresence brings educators and students together dynamically to build relationships and spark collaboration that leads to learning and innovation." The NCREN interactive video network handles more than 100 hours of classes, conferences and seminars each week. Video Services offers live streaming of sessions with storage capability for future viewing. And, because MCNC's video services also are able to integrate many commercially−available interactive video technologies into sessions, desktop videoconferencing can be incorporated into sessions with more traditional room−based systems when needed. This will allow education institutions to gain maximum return on their already−placed video investments and upgrade capabilities as budgets allow. John Killebrew, MCNC's vice president of community support for NCREN, said the power of interactive video is creating a leading−edge learning environment in North Carolina as well as enabling research collaboration, seminars, online workshops, and many other applications easily facilitated by video. He noted several examples including how public and private universities are training elementary school science 1

teachers, educational leaders are holding administrative meetings across the state to cut down on travel expenses, and how for several years students at Elizabeth City State University have been taking pharmacy classes from UNC Chapel Hill via the NCREN video network. "The number of K−20 education institutions utilizing video−based distance learning and online classes is expanding rapidly," said Killebrew. "These new services will allow the expansion of the use of video to accelerate and will keep costs of implementation affordable. This is especially vital during these challenging fiscal times." MCNC asked for volunteers from the NCREN video services community to participate in the testing and integration of the new video service improvements. MCNC buys Cisco video gear for state network :: Editor's Blog at WRAL...

MCNNC's NCREN expansion plan By RICK SMITH, WRAL Tech Wire Editor RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — MCNC is upgrading its North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) in order to provide videoconference to educational institution and other users across the state. The upgrade is set for July 1. As part of the changes, MCNC will offer Cisco TelePresence videoconferencing capability. MCNC has offered video distance learning courses for several years and currently is used for more than 100 hours of related video services a week. MCNC purchased the equipment necessary to act as the hub and to run the TelePresence service from Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), a spokesperson told WRAL Tech Wire. Financial details of the deal with Cisco were not disclosed. MCNC already is in the process of expanding NCREN’s fiber-optic backbone to many of the areas it does not already service through public-private partnerships, financial support from the Golden LEAF economic development group and two large federal grants totaling more than $103 million. Golden LEAF is contributing $24 million to the expansion project. The RTP-based operator of the network is also testing software that would enable laptops and desktop computers and tablets to be added to the video offering. MCNC plans to have the new services “widely available” during the upcoming fall semester. In order to utilize the TelePresence service, schools will need to purchase TelePresence screens or compatible devices. MCNC plans to offer its users self-scheduling as well as end-point management for rooms supporting video and desktop systems. “The number of K-20 education institutions utilizing video-based distance learning and online classes is expanding rapidly,” said John Killebrew, MCNC’s vice president of community support for NCREN,. “These new services will allow the expansion of the use of video to accelerate and will keep costs of implementation affordable. This is especially vital during these challenging fiscal times.” Volunteers from Duke University, Elon University, N.C. Office of Information Technology Services, N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, N.C. State University, Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington, Wake Forest University, and UNC-Charlotte worked with MCNC’s video group to help put the video upgrades in place. MCNC gears for superhighway NC network with video upgrades :: The S...

Workers install fiber-optic conduit near Mocksville (Davie County) as construction begins on MCNC’s first phase of expanding NCREN. The Round 1 project was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. By RICK SMITH, WRAL Tech Wire Editor Note: The Skinny blog is written by Rick Smith, editor and co-founder of WRAL Tech Wire and business editor of WRAL.com. RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Researchers and engineers at MCNC are not waiting for the completion of the $130 million-plus expansion of the N.C. Research and Education Network to upgrade how the statewide network can be used. Running on a fiber backbone, the new version of NCREN offers the potential to be a superhighway from Manteo to Murphy. On Thursday, MCNC announced it had purchased equipment and services from Cisco to enable that company’s TelePresence videoconferencing suite over NCREN. Additionally, Cisco agreed to work with MCNC to help schools, educational institutions and other NCREN customers in supporting non-TelePresence video. The technical folks are also developing the means to link PCs, laptops and tablets to the videoconferencing capability, expanding the video reach beyond specially equipped rooms. With the deal, says MCNC’s John Killedrew, NCREN can better support distance learning and other video needs. In some cases, schools and others won’t need to buy additional equipment in order to tap in to TelePresence. ( Read more about the deal here.) “Schools can use either existing H.323 compatible gear they have already bought to take advantage of this capability or buy any brand [high definition] or [standard definition] compatible gear to connect,” said Killebrew, who is MCNC’s vice president of community support for NCREN. “What MCNC is doing is buying scheduling and switching gear to provide services so that each individual endpoint does not have to buy this gear.” (Note: H.323 refers to a set of standards for audio-visual communication from the International Telecommunications Union’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector.) Because Cisco has moved beyond Telepresence in videoconferencing, Killebrew said the networking giant is positioned to support a network not running on Cisco gear. “Cisco recently introduced capability to support all brands of H.323 HD and SD video end points, so this isn't really a standardization on Cisco TelePresence,” Killebrew explained. “The equipment MCNC has purchased from Cisco allows MCNC to schedule HD and SD video sessions for NCREN institutions that have H.323 video capability or Cisco TelePresence at their facility and allows all brands of gear to participate in point-to-point or point-to-multipoint sessions. “This interoperability of different brands of equipment was key in MCNC's decision to purchase the scheduling and video switching gear from Cisco because education institutions in North Carolina have bought different brands of end points,” he added.

Killebrew, a veteran executive at BellSouth before moving to MCNC several years ago, said MCNC is preparing for the days when the network expansion under the federal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) is complete and a decades-long dream of coast-to-mountain high-speed backbone is in place. “NCREN, post BTOP, will have the capacity to greatly expand the amount of video traffic on the network,” Killebrew said. “MCNC is buying this gear to meet the increased demand for video services we are seeing today and to meet the growth the education institutions have told us to expect in the near future once the new fiber is in place.” Killebrew wouldn’t comment about what MCNC is paying Cisco for the equipment and technical support that it is providing MCNC. Plus, schools and other users will still need to purchase videoconference gear at their locations if they don’t already have it. However, this deal with Cisco reflects MCNC’s commitment to making sure NCREN has plenty of “on” and “off” ramps and applications to run on the superhighway. RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 23, 2011 -- Service advancements on NCREN include Cisco TelePresence technologies and other affordable next-gen video services

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MCNC announced today that the video services infrastructure on the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN ) is scheduled to be upgraded on July 1. MCNC has entered the final testing phases of Cisco TelePresence interoperability with H.323 pointto-point (standard on most desktops) and multipoint video services, and TelePresence Management System (TMS) scheduling.

John Killebrew, MCNC's vice president of community support for NCREN, said the power of interactive

video is creating a leading-edge learning environment in North Carolina as well as enabling research collaboration, seminars, online workshops, and many other applications easily facilitated by video. This is especially vital during these

MCNC Plans Video Upgrade on Statewide Education Network PR Newswire RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 23, 2011 Service advancements on NCREN include Cisco TelePresence technologies and other affordable next-gen video services RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MCNC announced today that the video services infrastructure on the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) is scheduled to be upgraded on July 1. MCNC has entered the final testing phases of Cisco TelePresence interoperability with H.323 pointto-point (standard on most desktops) and multipoint video services, and TelePresence Management System (TMS) scheduling. Upgraded shared services include: Cisco TelePresence room registration with the MCNC Video Call Manager, support for multipoint conferences with both Cisco TelePresence rooms and H.323 rooms in the same session, self-scheduling by NCREN Video Services customers, and end-point management for

supported video room and desktop systems.

"TelePresence brings educators and students together dynamically to build relationships and spark collaboration that leads to learning and innovation."

June 23, 2011 By: NCTechNews Category: Networks (Research Triangle Park, N.C.) MCNC announced today that the video services infrastructure on the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) is scheduled to be upgraded on July 1. MCNC has entered the final testing phases of Cisco TelePresence interoperability with H.323 point-to-point (standard on most desktops) and multipoint video services, and TelePresence Management System (TMS) scheduling. In the coming months, MCNC also intends to offer an affordable managed desktop video services solution as part of the NCREN Video Services portfolio. “By facilitating real-time interaction and removing barriers to communication, Cisco TelePresence enriches learning and will help to scale expertise to classrooms in North Carolina from anywhere in the world,” said Joe Novak, Cisco vice president and Cisco Research Triangle Park executive. “TelePresence brings educators and students together dynamically to build relationships and spark collaboration that leads to learning and innovation.” The NCREN interactive video network handles more than 100 hours of classes, conferences and seminars each week. Video Services offers live streaming of sessions with storage capability for future viewing. And, because MCNC’s video services also are able to integrate many commercially-available interactive video technologies into sessions, desktop videoconferencing can be incorporated into sessions with more traditional room-based systems when needed. This will allow education institutions to gain maximum return on their already-placed video investments and upgrade capabilities as budgets allow. John Killebrew, MCNC’s vice president of community support for NCREN, said the power of interactive video is creating a leading-edge learning environment in North Carolina as well as enabling research collaboration, seminars, online workshops, and many other applications easily facilitated by video. “The number of K-20 education institutions utilizing video-based distance learning and online classes is expanding rapidly,” said Killebrew. “These new services will allow the expansion of the use of video to accelerate and will keep costs of implementation affordable. This is especially vital during these challenging

Piedmont Service Group announces new name, increased focus on energy efficiency and sustainability services

Vivid Sydney Illuminates the Harbour City

Print RALEIGH, N.C., June 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With the rising demand for energy efficiency stretching from university campuses, across businesses, and to North Carolina's largest data centers, there's a growing market for companies who specialize in helping businesses identify and implement energy saving measures. Piedmont Service Group, an energy efficiency and facilities services company headquartered in Raleigh, has seen a sharp increase in the demand for energy audits, energy engineering and other efficiency-related services. The company, formerly known as Piedmont Air Conditioning, rebranded itself in April 2011 to reflect its increased focus on energy efficiency and sustainability services. The company's traditional HVAC design build and service remains a core part of its business. "Energy efficiency and sustainability is no longer a luxury for companies. It is a requirement -- an economic and environmental responsibility," said Peter Williams, President of Piedmont Service Group. "That mindset led us to expand our core HVAC business to help companies reduce their energy consumption through smart energy planning and monitoring." Piedmont recently partnered with Shaw University in Raleigh to help the university secure a $350,000 grant from the State Energy Office to upgrade an outdated chiller plant that serves the student center and two campus dormitories. The grant money, provided by the NC Department of Commerce through the Federal Recovery Act, is expected to help the university reduce its energy costs by $85,000 a year. Work on the project is currently underway. "This grant enables us to move forward with important energy savings projects that will improve our bottom line, reduce our impact on the environment and provide a more comfortable learning environment for our students," said Dr. Jeffrey Smith, Vice President of Student Affairs, Shaw University. Piedmont Service Group has worked with many companies across North Carolina to obtain LEED certification, the gold standard for energy efficient buildings. During the construction of Quintiles' new 252,000-square foot world headquarters in the Research Triangle Park, Piedmont provided mechanical systems that lowered energy consumption and reduced Quintiles carbon footprint. Piedmont also installed an energy management system that allows Quintiles' facilities staff to remotely monitor and control the building's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting systems. "The advances in smart building technologies have created enormous opportunity for companies to reduce their energy consumption through automated systems," Williams said. "That technology, combined with mechanical systems designed to maximize energy efficiency, can save companies like Quintiles hundreds of thousands of dollars over the life of their building." The increased demand for energy efficiency and sustainability services has allowed Piedmont to successfully maintain its business during the slowdown of new construction projects seen over the last three years. Piedmont has increased their workforce by 10% over the past year, including five Certified Energy Managers, as well as professional engineers and mechanical engineers who provide special expertise in energy efficiency and mechanical/HVAC systems.

In addition to its energy efficiency services, Piedmont continues to operate a highly successful HVAC business, the foundation of its business since 1971. Many of North Carolina's largest data centers, including SAS, MCNC, Genworth and Qualcomm, rely on Piedmont to maintain its mission critical equipment. About Piedmont Service Group Piedmont Service Group, formerly Piedmont Air Conditioning, makes buildings more efficient. A leader in energy services, Piedmont has expanded its core HVAC business to address the growing market demand for energy efficiency and sustainability services. The company is headquartered in Raleigh, NC and employs 150 people across six locations in North and South Carolina (Greensboro, Greenville, Hickory, Myrtle Beach, Raleigh, Wilmington). Telepresence - MCNC to Upgrade Video Infrastructure on North Carolina Education Network

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor MCNC, a non-profit organization that employs Internet networking technologies to improve learning throughout North Carolina's K-20 education community, announced that the video infrastructure on the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) will be upgraded on July 1.

MCNC already began the final testing phases of Cisco TelePresence interoperability with H.323 point-to-point and multipoint video services, and TelePresence Management System (TMS) scheduling.

Testing centrally managed soft client licenses for additional devices including laptop and desktop computers as well as tablets. New services are scheduled to be available to NCREN users during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year.

Leveraging Cisco Telepresence (News - Alert), MCNC will be able to offer several additional services to NCREN Video Service customers and to support the use of Cisco (News

- Alert) TelePresence across the statewide community.

Utilizing the TelePresence infrastructure from MCNC, schools can purchase the TelePresence screen or any H.323 compatible in-room devices.

“By facilitating real-time interaction and removing barriers to communication, Cisco TelePresence enriches learning and will help to scale expertise to classrooms in North Carolina from anywhere in the world,” said Joe Novak, Cisco vice president and Cisco Research Triangle Park executive, in a statement.

“TelePresence brings educators and students together dynamically to build relationships and spark collaboration that leads to learning and innovation,” Novak added.

Cisco TelePresence room registration with the MCNC Video Call Manager, support for multipoint conferences with both Cisco TelePresence rooms and H.323 rooms in the same session, self-scheduling by NCREN Video Services customers, and end-point management for supported video room and desktop systems, are also offered as part of the upgraded shared services.

“The number of K-20 education institutions utilizing video-based distance learning and online classes is expanding rapidly,” said John Killebrew, vice president of community support for NCREN, MCNC.

“These new services will allow the expansion of the use of video to accelerate and will keep costs of implementation affordable. This is especially vital during these challenging fiscal times,” Killebrew added.

Recently, MCNC and its northwestern North Carolina project sub-recipient ERC Broadband announced that three companies have been chosen to construct 1,200 miles of new fiber optics as part of the second phase expansion of the NCREN.
