A Prayer for Those Who Look Away for Cello and Fixed Media Noam Faingold
Notes to the Performer A Prayer for Those Who Look Away should be played in a Romantic style, similar to Bruch's Kol Nidrei, Op. 47. A version of this piece exists for solo cello without fixed media, with the lengths of sections slightly modified, which is suitable for settings without electronics, such as general recitals or as part of Selichot or Yom Kippur services. Cue notes included in this score should not be played when performing with the fixed media track. They are included in the score to be played by the cellist in the version without fixed media. Technical notes A performance of this work with fixed media ideally uses a PA with stereo speakers, though some mono speakers or amplifier set-ups can work, as long as the speech in the fixed media can be clearly understood and no sounds in the fixed media are "lost." The fixed media audio file has some sounds panned to varying degrees of left and right. It is highly recommended that the performer is amplified with a "band" pickup, and use a pre-amp. Sonority transformation is an important part of this piece. Attention should be paid to notes that must blend with other sonorities, whether they are overlapping cello notes (as in bar 32) or notes entering and exiting the fixed media audio. Notation notes Roman numerals refer to string numbers. Dynamics are relative to the fixed media track. When amplified and/or performing with fixed media, pianissimo should be as quiet as possible while still audible relative to the media track. Fortissimo, when amplified and played with fixed media, should be clearly audible in balance with the media track. When playing with fixed media and no amplification, the media track should be balanced so that the cello is at least partly audible as it approaches the loudest "climactic point" level of the media track. Circles above the notes refer to the octave harmonic in bass and tenor clef, and to high overtone partial harmonics in treble clef (sounding the played pitch). Grace notes are generally intended to be played before the beat, though the performer has some flexibility in deciding the duration of each grace note. Playing grace notes on the beat may be desirable in some instances, at the performer's discretion. In measure 23, a grace note is written before the bar line, indicating that this one should always be played before the beat.
