Mission Statement

Noble and Greenough School is a rigorous academic community dedicated to inspiring leadership for the public good. Through mentoring relationships, we motivate students to achieve their highest potential and to lead lives characterized by service to others.

Nobles seeks to underscore the importance of honesty in all our lives—both at Nobles and in the world beyond the school. Lying, cheating, plagiarism, pirating copyrighted material and other methods of misrepresentation are unacceptable.

Respect

For Self: Nobles encourages each individual to develop a healthy sense of respect for, and honesty toward, themselves, one that nurtures both physical and emotional well being and promotes the concepts of independence and responsibility.

For Others: Nobles respects the sanctity of each individual. Differences, access and inclusion are embraced. No member of the Nobles community may demean, belittle or harm another.

Nobles’ In-Person Learning Model:

Nobles is committed to its Mission-driven, in-person learning model. As such, please know that unless COVID protocols force us to move to a hybrid model, we will be offering only in-person programming. Classes will not be recorded and students will not be allowed to join classes via zoom. The one exception to this will be for students in the 5-day COVID protocol; students who need to quarantine due to COVID will be allowed to join classes via zoom if they feel well enough to do so..

The Shattuck Schoolhouse Building Hours

Monday–Friday: 6:30 a.m.– 8:30 p.m.; an adult is on duty from 3:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The reception area is open until 6:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. If a student is not participating in a Nobles sponsored or approved program, they must sign-in at the Academic Center, with the on-duty faculty member. Day students are permitted to study in the Academic Center until 8:30 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: All buildings are closed to student activities except Nobles-approved programs supervised by Nobles staff and/or faculty. All Sunday programs must receive prior approval by a division head or head of school.

ACADEMIC POLICIES

Diploma Standards

Diplomas

Diplomas are awarded by vote of the faculty. All graduation requirements must be completed by 2:00 p.m. on the Wednesday before graduation in order for a student to receive a diploma on graduation day.

Credit Requirements

To graduate, a student is required to complete 40.5 academic credits. One credit will be awarded for the successful completion of one full-credit, semester-length course or its equivalent. Class IV students must take a minimum of six classes each semester for a minimum of 11.5 credits total for the year; five full-credit courses are required in each succeeding semester until the final semester, during which a student must pass at least four full-credit courses and one half-credit course. In exceptional circumstances, permission to carry fewer than the required number of courses per year may be granted by the Certification Committee or head of upper school. A student may not enroll in more than six full-credit courses during any one semester at Nobles.

To graduate, a student must successfully complete the following:

English

eight semesters

Mathematics six semesters and through Class II year

Modern or Classical Language completion of Level III

History & Social Science four semesters (two in U.S. History; two in History of the Human Community)

Science four semesters (biology and either physics or chemistry)

Arts one credit in visual arts and one credit in performing arts

Afternoon Program

three trimester activities per year until Class II and Class I, when two are required

Community Service 80 hours of an approved project or projects

Personal Development from enrollment through the Class II year

Independent Courses

Upper school students may petition to take a half-credit independent course with a Nobles faculty member in any discipline. Prior approval must be obtained from the teacher of the independent course and the advisor. A student may petition the head of the upper school for permission to earn full credit for an independent course, but full credit is awarded only in unusual circumstances. Petitions must contain a written description of the course. Only at the discretion of the department chair and head of the upper school can an independent course be taken in lieu of a graduation or distribution requirement. For current Nobles students, graduation requirements may not be fulfilled and credit cannot be obtained for work done outside of Nobles (or a Nobles-approved study-away program) except for unusual circumstances and only with prior approval of the head of the upper school.

Certification Committee

The Certification Committee reviews appeals brought by students for exemptions from normal curricular requirements or course changes that fall outside the drop/add period. The committee is chaired by the upper school head and includes the registrar, the class dean and other faculty pertinent to the case being considered.

Exemption From Distribution Requirements: Any petition for a waiver in an academic discipline must be submitted to the Certification Committee and, in most cases, must be supported by a recent evaluation by a medical professional in a relevant field.

ACADEMIC EVALUATION

Computation of Academic Averages

To compute in-house academic averages, the following numbers are assigned to letter grades:

11 = A 5 = C P = Pass

10 = A- 4 = C- Inc. = Incomplete

9 = B+ 3 = D+ NC = No Credit 8 = B

= D 7 = B-

= D-

= C+ 0 = E = Failing

Academic Distinction

To qualify for Academic Distinction, a student must attain a grade-point average of 9.50 at the end of a marking period; for High Distinction: 10.00; for Highest Distinction: 10.50. A student who receives one or more lack of effort marks cannot qualify for Academic Distinction during that marking period.

Requirements for Graduation With Academic Distinction

To graduate with Distinction, a student must earn a cumulative GPA of 9.5; to graduate with High Distinction, a student must earn a cumulative GPA of 10.00; to graduate with Highest Distinction, a student must earn a cumulative GPA of 10.50.

A student’s cumulative unweighted internal GPA is calculated by averaging the total number value of a student’s grades over the course of his/her career in the upper school at Nobles. Only graded courses taken at Nobles factor into the student’s cumulative GPA. Classes taken while on semester-away programs, pass/fail classes and Global Online Academy classes are not factored into a student’s GPA. Finally, third-quarter grades during the Class I year are calculated as students’ final second-semester grades.

Pass/No Credit: Any extra course above the required number per semester that does not fulfill a distribution or graduation requirement may be taken on a “Pass/No Credit” basis. Any P/NC M-block course may be taken by Class I students during spring semester as part of their 4.5 course load, regardless of whether or not it is taken to fulfill the performing arts requirement. Students who wish to take a course on a P/NC basis must obtain a request form from the Academic Office, have it signed by their parent(s)/ guardian(s), advisor and teacher, and then return it to the registrar according to the following deadlines:

• Requests to take a fall-semester course on a P/NC basis must be submitted within one week of the first day of classes.

• Requests to take a spring-semester course on a P/NC basis must be submitted within one week of the first day of classes in the second semester.

• Students may not change course grading status without direct petition to, and approval from, the Certification Committee. Such changes will only be made in the event of extenuating circumstances. The Certification Committee will make a recommendation to the division head, who has final approval.

The following terms indicate the range of unsatisfactory grades:

Incomplete: A grading category that indicates a student has not completed their assigned work, but has offered an explanation that is accepted as valid by the teacher. A student may not be placed on Academic Distinction until all “Incompletes” are removed from their record. Unless otherwise approved by the teacher and division head, a student must complete missing work within the subsequent academic quarter or by July 1 following the fourth quarter. If work is not completed, the student risks receiving a No Credit (see description below) for the course and may be placed on academic probation.

No Credit: A grading category that indicates that a student has not completed their assigned work and has no acceptable excuse. Any appropriate make-up work in this case is to be defined by the teacher involved in conjunction with the division head and class dean. A grade of “NC” automatically places a student on Academic Probation unless it is changed to a passing grade through completion of acceptable work within the subsequent academic quarter or by July 1 after the fourth quarter.

A Grade of “E”: A grading category that indicates outright failure of a course for that marking period.

December Assessments and June Exams

At the end of the fall semester, Nobles students complete assessments in most classes during specified days. These assessments are not cumulative in nature unless that has been the regular pattern of testing for the course. At the end of the spring semester, Nobles students take final exams in most classes–again during specified days. These exams can be cumulative, and the week prior to exams is dedicated to review.

Students are expected to take their assessments and exams on the days scheduled. Exceptions may be made, but only with permission from the division head. Please bear in mind that athletic tournaments, off-campus performances or family events prior to (or even during) assessments/exams do not automatically qualify students to take assessments and exams outside of the prescribed schedule. Inevitably, there are students during each of these periods who have legitimate medical reasons for postponing assessments/exams. Each of these situations will be dealt with individually by the division head, advisor and other representatives of the school.

Auditing Policy

The school encourages faculty and students to audit courses (for a day or for the entire length of the course) either to expand their knowledge or to preview courses that they may wish to take or teach in the future. Students must ask permission of the teacher involved after speaking with the school scheduler, who will determine if there is room in the class.

Attendance

If a student misses 20 percent of the total number of class meetings in either semester, the divison head, in consultation with the Certification Committee, may choose to invoke disciplinary or academic sanctions, which could result in loss of credit or other academic penalties. All absences will be included in the count.

Academic Reporting Reports

Grade reports and teacher and afternoon-program-leader comments are scheduled regularly throughout the year. Parent(s)/guardian(s) can expect to receive these electronically approximately one week after grades and comments are submitted by faculty.

Parent/guardian-advisor conferences may be scheduled on afternoons during the week following the end of the fall afternoon-program season in November. Throughout the year, parents may wish to schedule additional conferences with the advisor. The advisor

Academic Probation

Academic probation is designed to address the difficulties that a student may have with academic work at Nobles. Academic probation at Nobles is a “step” process, a graduated response to unsatisfactory academic performance. While a student may, as a result of academic performance, be asked to leave Nobles, the intent of the school is to help students to develop and implement strategies to attain academic success.

Upper School

Upper school students will be placed on academic probation at the end of a quarter during which any one of the following transpires:

• The student receives two or more grades below a C-.

• The student receives one failing grade.

• The student receives a grade-point average of 4.5 or lower.

• The student receives an “NC”.

• The student demonstrates “flagrant neglect” as determined by the division head and in consultation with the student’s teachers, the class dean, afternoon-program coach or director, and/or advisor.

Academic flagrant neglect may be determined through any (or any combination) of the following: lack of effort; unsatisfactory academic work; excessive absences; behavioral or citizenship infractions.

A student who receives a grade-point average between 4.5 and 5.0 may be placed on probation.

A student who receives two or more “lack of effort” designations in any one quarter may be placed on probation.

The first quarter of the Class IV year will not be considered for purposes of academic probation.

Middle school

Middle School students will be placed on academic probation as a result of any one of the following circumstances:

• receipt of three grades of C- or below

• receipt of two grades of D+ or below

• receipt of one failing grade

• receipt of “NC”

• “flagrant neglect” as determined by the division head and in consultation with the student’s teachers, afternoon program leader, class dean, and advisor.

A student who receives a grade point average of 5.0 or below may be placed on probation by vote of the faculty.

A student who receives two or more “lack of effort” designations in any one quarter may be placed on probation by vote of the faculty.

Academic probation in the middle school will begin with the third marking period (March) for Class VI students and the first marking period (October) for Class V students.

Middle school students on step-two probation will enter the upper school on step-one probation (see descriptions below).

T HE “STEP” P ROCESS

Step One:

Following the first marking period of unsatisfactory work, the student will meet with their parent(s)/guardian(s), advisor, appropriate teachers, class dean and division head to devise a plan to give them the tools and assistance needed to find greater success.

Step Two:

After a second unsatisfactory marking period, discussion begins as to whether the academic environment, challenges and expectations of Nobles are appropriate for the student.

Step Three:

A third marking period of unsatisfactory work will result in the student’s dismissal from Nobles.

When asked by the family to do so, Nobles may assist in the discussion of alternative educational plans for students on probation.

The school reserves the right to dismiss, or require the withdrawal of, a student at any point in time it deems the student’s departure to be in the best interest of either the institution or the student.

A CADEMIC S UPPORT

Nobles recognizes that students learn in different ways and at different paces and has put in place support systems to help all students work toward their academic goals. The ultimate goal of academic support at Nobles is to help students to develop the academic and personal strategies that will allow them to become independent learners. For students who require regular support outside the classroom, the student, family and appropriate faculty work together to identify the challenges and endeavor to formulate effective support plans.

Teachers Connecting With Students

Nobles faculty members offer extra help and should be the “first stop” for any student who is having difficulty in a particular course. The contractual expectation of our faculty is that they will give extra help to any Nobles student who needs it during our academic day. During the academic day, Nobles faculty are not permitted to tutor Nobles (or any other) students for payment.

An advisor, class dean or teacher may also recommend that a student receive peer help or study-skills support with another faculty member. While teachers and advisors may assist the student in making these arrangements, it is incumbent upon the student to follow through with the recommendations provided. Students are encouraged to meet with a member of the department of academic support.

A teacher, class dean or advisor may refer a student to the department of academic

support. Members of the department of academic support meet with students to assess academic challenges, set goals, modify study strategies, monitor progress, and make additional recommendations. Additionally, the member of the department of academic support may consult with the student life team, head of upper school or consulting psychologist. Free peer-to-peer tutoring is also available via the peer help program. Students may schedule an appointment with a learning specialist in the department of academic support, regardless of whether there has been a faculty recommendation.

The Academic Achievement Center (AAC)

Located in Shattuck 131 the AAC offers a quiet space for students to meet with study groups, peer tutors or private tutors.

Outside Tutoring

Before students engage with outside tutorial support, we encourage them to avail themselves of the numerous academic resources that Nobles offers: conferences with teachers and advisors, the peer help program, and the resources of the department of academic support. If there is a need for additional academic support, the academic-support team will work directly with the family of any student to recommend independent professionals. Families who request independent tutorial support are responsible for the expense of this tutoring.

No outside tutors may work on campus, students may ZOOM with outside tutors during free periods. Students may do so in a private place and with head phones.

Educational Testing

If educational testing seems appropriate, the director of academic support will contact the family to discuss the issue and suggest available resources. Families seeking psychoeducational testing must, at their own expense, arrange for a diagnostic evaluation with medical and educational professionals outside the school. When Nobles receives documentation, appropriate and reasonable school-based accommodations will be determined. Any adjustments in academic requirements must be approved by the division head.

S ERVICES FOR S TUDENTS W ITH D ISA b ILITIES A FFECTING

Nobles will provide reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Accommodations may not fundamentally alter or compromise our academic program or impose an undue burden on the school.

Individuals with disabilities are guaranteed certain protections and rights of access to programs and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As a first step in accessing these rights, a student must present recent documentation* indicating they have a disability that substantially limits some major life activity, including learning, and that an accommodation is needed to provide the student with full access to the school’s educational program.

Nobles will submit all necessary and appropriate documentation to support a student’s request for testing accommodations by outside testing agencies such as The College Board or ACT. However, Nobles is not responsible for decisions made by The College

During designated days at the beginning of each semester, a student may request to drop and/or add courses. Scheduling changes are done online, and must be approved by the student’s advisor and class dean or college counseling.

No course change of any kind (e.g. add, drop, exchange) may be made beyond the prescribed registration and course change deadline unless approved by the Certification Committee or division head.

Course changes may be initiated by academic department heads if they deem such action will result in a more appropriate placement for a student.

In those rare cases when a student is permitted to drop a yearlong course at the end of the fall semester, the student will receive no credit for the fall semester, and the fall semester grade will be removed from the transcript. Exceptions to this may only be granted by the Certification Committee or division head.

Students and parents will receive materials during the winter term. The math, modern language and science departments make specific course placements each year. Students consult with their advisors, class deans, parents/guardians and, if necessary, a college counselor prior to submitting final course selection forms.

Please note that the school reserves the right to cancel classes that are not sufficiently subscribed.

COMPUTERS AND TECHNOLOGY

D igital g ui D elines

I. General Principles

Digital tools play a crucial role at Noble and Greenough School. Our technology resources support students in their scholarship, and faculty and staff in promoting teaching, learning and school operations. The first priority of the school is to provide a stable, reliable and consistent digital environment in which all users can become acquainted with and develop their facility. We aim to provide a dependable technical environment where teachers and students can rely on tools that enhance the learning experience and improve productivity.

As users of Nobles’ technology resources and services, including Nobles’ social media profiles, websites, and online/cloud applications, community members, faculty, staff, and

students are always representatives of Nobles. Use of our network and services that violate our core Community Principles will result in disciplinary action (See Community Principles.)

The NoblesCloud, the school’s internal email and collaboration system, provided by Google, is integral to how Nobles community members communicate and function. The use of this system must be in support of education or academic research and

consistent with the educational objectives of Noble and Greenough School. Therefore, the rules concerning the appropriate use of the Nobles network may be more restrictive than those governing other forms of communication. The school provides access to the NoblesCloud for all community members. As is the case with all aspects of a student’s experience at Nobles, the use of the NoblesCloud is a privilege, which the school may remove at its discretion and, in particular, when a person’s behavior warrants such action.The user must agree to the terms of the school’s Acceptable Use Policy, as explained below, to use the NoblesCloud and all other digital resources.

II. Acceptable Use Policy

The Acceptable Use Policy for Nobles’ digital resources is rooted in the school’s Community Principles of honesty and respect for self and others. Behavior that is inconsistent with those principles or the general school rules and regulations as published in The Guide, is not an acceptable use of the school’s resources and will be dealt with in the same manner as any violation of said principles and rules.

1. All users should ensure the integrity of the computing systems by having a strong password (at least eight characters with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and one number). The password should be changed at regular intervals to ensure its continued integrity. Community members should never share their passwords.

2. No form of digital resources (smartphone, computer, network, etc.) should be used for any form of dishonesty, academic or otherwise.

3. No form of digital resource should be used to pirate software.

4. No form of digital resources should be used to download copyrighted material (music, movies, books, presentations, etc.) without proper purchase and/or licensing.

5. No form of technology or social media sites (Facebook,TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.) should be used to harm or hurt others. This includes but is not limited to:

• sending unwanted messages;

• posting hurtful messages or information;

• assuming another person’s identity online;

• using someone else’s account (even with permission);

• using any technology resource to bully or harass another person.

6. Users may not harm the integrity of the network or systems in any way.

7. The use of peer-to-peer programs or any other method to share files is prohibited unless approved by ISS or the administration.

8. Users may not attempt to use or control any system for their own exclusive use.

9. Users may not attempt to gain access to other accounts, including system accounts.

10. Users are prohibited from attempting to alter their own technology privileges or those of another person.

11. The use of games for entertainment purposes is not allowed for upper school students during the academic day or any time for a middle school student.

12. Technology use is a privilege that can be revoked.

Cell phone use is prohibited in the middle school.

Use of any school computer or network, including the wireless network, in the commission of a crime will be reported to law enforcement officials.

While users have a right to expect their accounts to be secure from other users, the school, as the owner of the systems, reserves the right to monitor the use of the systems at its discretion, at any time, with or without notice and notwithstanding any password protection. The purpose of this policy is to enable the school to maintain a campus that is safe for all. Use of our network, services, and computers by students assumes that students have read this policy and agree and accept the conditions outlined herein.

III. Nine Principles for Use of Social Media and Digital Communication

The Nobles mission and community principles are the foundation for all policies and procedures at the school, including community members’ use of social media and other digital communication.

The following is not intended to address every possible situation; it is intended to offer guidelines and clarify general expectations. If in doubt about a particular situation, please ask your supervisor, department head or advisor.

1. Follow Community Principles and practice digital citizenship in all online interactions.

2. Do not associate personal social media presence or other online identity with your nobles.edu account.

3. In all electronic interactions that connect with Nobles in any way (even indirectly), behaviors should be legal, appropriate, responsible and kind.

4. Texting and/or messaging between faculty and students should be confined to the exchange of basic information regarding academics or school logistics.

5. Faculty and staff may only connect, friend or follow students—or accept those connections in reverse—when the purpose is directly related to the Nobles community; please note that community members may be asked to articulate the specific purpose.

6. If faculty and students are connected via social media for the purpose of an academic class, a Nobles-sponsored trip or other appropriate reason, the faculty member must disconnect electronically once the purpose has been served.

7. Faculty and staff should remember that they are the adults in all interactions with students.

8. Do not interact anonymously with any other members of the Nobles community.

9. Understand that your online presence is never truly private and that you represent Nobles at all times.

THE AFTERNOON PROGRAM

The Afternoon Program expands the Nobles education beyond the traditional classroom and is integral to building a cohesive Nobles community. Nobles’ students and faculty work together toward shared goals in the arts, athletics, community service and other activities. In doing so, students further develop an understanding of the importance of collaboration, teamwork, community, and lifelong health and wellness while adhering to the Community Principles of honesty and respect for self and others.

a fternoon P rogram r equirements

Satisfactory completion of all Afternoon Program assignments is a requirement for graduation.

• Students in Classes I and II are encouraged to participate in all three seasons.

• Students in Classes VI, V, IV and III must participate in three seasons of an approved Afternoon Program.

• Students in Classes VI, V, IV and III must participate in two “physical” seasons each year.

• Students in Classes I and II must participate in two seasons of an approved Afternoon Program.

• Students in Classes I and II must participate in at least one “physical” and one “on campus” (which includes the Community Service Afternoon Program) season each year.

• Students may not participate in strength/conditioning more than once in the same year.

• Students in Class II or III who spend a semester away from Nobles must have at least one full on-campus Afternoon Program season.

• Students in Class II may take either an exempt season or do an independent project but may not do both.

Nobles recognizes that some students have deep and abiding commitments to offerings not presented by Nobles; we may therefore allow independent project afternoon-program credit upon petition to the Afternoon Program Committee.

The Afternoon Program Committee is made up of the department heads of the Afternoon Program.

All requests for exceptions must be submitted to the Afternoon Program Committee one week prior to the start of the season. The Committee will then review and decide on these requests.

Nobles considers the Afternoon Program an integral part of the school curriculum. Therefore, a student’s Afternoon Program commitment is expected to take priority over other outside commitments (town or club sports, travel teams, outside music lessons, etc.).

With the exception of excused absences (such as doctor appointments), students must attend a full day of classes, including long assembly, in order to participate in or attend any Afternoon Program activities (games, practices, rehearsals, performances, etc.). Students are expected to attend all afternoon activities. Failure to do so without being

excused will be considered an unexcused absence.

Afternoon activities last approximately an hour and a half for sub-varsity and middleschool practices and rehearsals. Community service commitments, varsity practices, upper school play rehearsals (with the exception of production week) last approximately two hours. Some activities will have alternative schedules that will be articulated at the start of the season.

Nobles is a member of the Independent School League (ISL), which is part of a larger association, the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). The NEPSAC determines policies, procedures and guidelines. With these affiliations, all Nobles student-athletes and coaches will adhere to the following:

As a basic principle, we believe that the lessons learned from fairly played athletics, whether interscholastic or not (including games and practices), are of benefit to our students and our school.

The ISL is proud of the behavior and sportsmanship displayed by its players, coaches and fans. We value spirited and fair play as well as positive support for our players and teams. In order to ensure that our expected level of decorum continues each season and each game, we ask that all members of the ISL community continually renew their efforts to abide by the ideals of our league.

Athletic competition in the ISL is guided by the following ideals: Players and coaches shall at all times represent themselves and their school with honor, proper conduct and good sportsmanship. They shall understand that competitive rivalries are encouraged but that disrespect for opponents is unsportsmanlike and lessens the value of the rivalries. They shall confine the competitiveness of the game to the field and, in particular, behave properly on the sidelines and in the locker rooms and online both before and after games. Players and coaches shall comply fully with the rulings of the officials. In no way, either by voice, action or gesture, shall they demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the decisions made. They must never forget that they represent their school.

s P e C tators

ISL schools will not tolerate at their contests any spectator, either student or adult,

whose behavior is disrespectful toward players, officials, coaches or other spectators. Nor will ISL schools permit any type of spectator behavior that either detracts from the proper conduct of the game or disadvantages a player or team.

Examples of unacceptable behavior during competition:

1. Use of profanity or displays of anger that draw attention away from the contest.

2. Criticizing the officials in any way or displaying temper with an official’s call.

3. “Trash talk” or taunts that antagonize opponents.

4. Verbal abuse or intimidation tactics.

5. Disrespectful or derogatory taunts, chants, songs, gestures, signs, posters or banners.

6. Use of artificial noisemakers of any kind.

7. In basketball, there should be no distracting action during freethrow attempts.

e x P ulsion r ule

Players or coaches who are ejected from interscholastic games for “unsportsmanlike behavior” or other flagrant behavior will forfeit their eligibility to play or coach in the next regularly scheduled interscholastic game or tournament game played in that sport and will meet with the athletic director at the first available opportunity to determine if further disciplinary action is warranted.

G ENERAL I NFORMATION

Daily Commitment:

With a few contest exceptions, participation on the third and fourth level teams is a five-day commitment. Junior varsity and varsity participants are held to a six-day commitment. Students are expected to attend all practices and games. Failure to do so could jeopardize playing time or result in suspension from the team.

Injury/Illness Protocol (general)

Any student injured in a Nobles physical activity should see one of the athletic trainers for evaluation, documentation and recommendations. Students unable to practice due to injury/illness are expected to attend practice unless excused by an athletic trainer, coach, division head or dean. Any student who visits a physician for an injury/illness must show a record of that visit (with their doctor’s recommendations for further participation) to the athletic trainer before they will be allowed to resume participation in their Afternoon Program.

Nobles Position Statement on Supplements:

The Noble and Greenough Athletic Department does not encourage or endorse the use of dietary supplements, specifically ergogenic aids. School personnel and coaches may never recommend, endorse, or encourage the use of any supplement, drug, or medication for performance enhancement to any Nobles student. We feel strongly that supplements should only be used on the advice of one’s health care provider for

health-related reasons. It is our belief that the best way to achieve optimum health and enhanced physical performance is through balanced nutritional practices along with a well-designed training program.

Medical Exemption

A student will receive a medical exemption from their selected afternoon program activity for reasons related to the injury/medical condition sustained; such as physical therapy. If a student is injured while playing or practicing for a Nobles team or participating in any other school-sponsored afternoon program, the student will remain a part of that team/program in whatever capacity they are able; if unable to physically participate in any way a student may resume the role as a manager with the faculty member/ coach’s approval. For Middle School participants, an alternative role shall be at the discretion of the coach/faculty, and time spent performing physical therapy with a member of the Office of Sports Medicine will be encouraged.

The absence(s) shall only be allowed for the time in which the student is deemed unable to participate according to explicit written documentation provided by a medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathy (DO), nurse practitioner (NP), or physician assistant (PA). Documentation expectations will range from initial diagnosis, progress updates, and clearance notes that would allow for re-introduction, in and level of participation, in the afternoon program. The goal of a medical exemption is to allow for proper and appropriate healing of the student who has sustained an injury or illness during a school year, while at the same time upholding the Nobles’ standards of community engagement, co-curricular involvement, and health and wellness.

Classifications of Exemption Types:

Full Medical Exemption: A student shall be fully exempt from the Nobles afternoon program if they suffer an injury/medical condition with the proper documentation provided stating explicitly that no physical participation is allowed.

Full exemption will allow for open scheduling of all physical therapy appointments, on and off-campus, and the ability to leave campus once the school day has ended.

Required documentation and a meeting with one of the following Nobles representatives shall be required for the full exemption to take effect: the student’s advisor, a member of the Office of Sports Medicine, and a member of the Afternoon Program Committee.

If the student is unable to participate in their sport in any capacity due to the medical exemption, in order to uphold the community standard that all Nobles students are fully active members of an afternoon program, they may elect to join another afternoon program activity. The coach and student will communicate about an alternate role within the team, if at all possible.

Partial Medical Exemption:

Minor sports-related injuries or other approved medical reasons.

If a student is injured as a result of or during their chosen afternoon program, they should make all efforts to communicate with a member of the Office of Sports

Partial medical exemptions shall allow for one excused absence per week for offcampus physical therapy or other approved medical appointments and there shall be an expectation (if appropriate) that the student continues their physical therapy with the Office of Sports Medicine on at least one additional day of the week.

If the student is seen by a doctor or any other medical professional outside of Nobles, they must provide written documentation of the diagnosis and visit for the medical exemption to be approved.

If the student is unable to participate in their sport in any capacity due to the medical exemption, in order to uphold the community standard that all Nobles students are fully active members of an afternoon program, they will elect to join another afternoon program activity.

Regarding Concussion; due to the nature of concussions, all participation directives shall come from a medical doctor, school nurse, and licensed athletic trainer only.

Clear and daily communication of participation status, injury timelines, and projected return to play plans shall be communicated regularly with members of the Office of Sports Medicine, their head coach, or the Nobles faculty member in charge of the afternoon program a student is in as well as the student’s advisor.

Attendance during medical exemption: Regular attendance at practices and games is required, except when the student is receiving medical treatment or participating in rehabilitation or exempted by a division head. If a student is injured outside of Nobles, the student’s primary care and specialist referrals are the responsibility of the family and their outside health care provider (not the certified athletic trainers). The student, their treating physician(s), and the Nobles athletic training or health staff will work collaboratively to coordinate a plan so that the student makes progress toward their recovery or rehabilitation.

The student must communicate regularly with the Nobles staff. No student will receive a medical exemption from the Afternoon Program if that student continues to participate in outside athletics. If a student continues to participate in outside athletics when they have a medical exemption, the student will jeopardize their opportunity to play for a Nobles team.

Competition Levels

Middle School teams are only for Classes V and VI, and the third level is intended for Classes III and IV. Generally, team tryouts in Classes I– IV determine the members at the JV and varsity levels. A student in Class V or VI may try out and play for a varsity team with the approval of their parent(s)/guardian(s), advisor, coach(es), the middle school core, the heads of the middle and upper schools and the athletic director. Exceptions to these general parameters for team formation will be handled on an individual basis by the director of athletics with the intent to maintain consistency within the athletic program and to keep the best interest of the students at the forefront.

In the fall and spring, practices for Classes I–IV are normally completed by 6:00 p.m. and practices for the middle school by 4:15 p.m. In the winter, practice schedules may vary with some of the teams according to facility availability.

Issued Items

Students are responsible for the proper care and return of all issued athletic equipment or uniforms. While required with some teams, it is strongly recommended that all players turn in their uniforms to the equipment room for washing following each contest. Students will be billed for lost, damaged or unreturned items. An additional fee will be charged for missing the deadline to return equipment or uniforms.

C OMMUNITY S ERVICE

Students are required to complete 80 hours of community service before they graduate. Students may complete their service during the summer, on weekends, through Nobles EXCEL program or as an Afternoon Program activity. Students should make sure that their service commitment supports the needs of a community that depends on volunteerism and would not be met without those volunteers. All projects must be approved by the community service department.

Successful completion of one season of Afternoon Program community service will grant 60 hours of service toward the 80-hour requirement if all obligations of the program (including attendance on site, at meetings and weekend events) are met. This is a five- dayper-week commitment. Students who complete their community-service hours during a season of the Afternoon Program or over the summer must submit all work under their control (e.g., journals) within one week of the start of the next season.

Class II students who have not completed their service requirement by the end of their Class II year must submit a plan by June of that year indicating how they will fulfill their requirement.

Transportation will be provided for students taking community service as an afternoon activity.

D ANCE

Fall and spring dance are open to middle and upper school students interested in developing dance technique and creating choreography. Students of all levels of experience are welcomed. Dance classes focus on fitness for dancers and the technical dance styles of modern dance, ballet and hip hop. Students also work on developing creative movement that is incorporated into the choreography. The choreography is presented for the school in assembly at the end of the program.

T ECHNICAL T HEATRE

Technical theatre provides exposure to the production aspects of theatre. Students will

develop technical skills in lighting, sets, props, sound, and/or costumes. They will also act as technical facilitators for assemblies and other school events. Technical theatre requires an extensive time commitment on the part of a student and may require weekend and evening time, particularly when a production is nearing completion. Students are expected to attend all performances as part of the crew.

T HEATRE

Each year, Nobles produces mainstage productions directed by the theatre faculty, a middle school production and student-directed plays. Rehearsals for all productions are held in the afternoon, and, at times, on Saturdays. A schedule of rehearsals will be shared at the beginning of each season.

I NDEPENDENT A FTERNOON P RO j ECTS

The option for independent afternoon projects is available to students in Classes I-IV by permission of the Afternoon Program Committee. A student may participate in this option only once a year. This option provides students with the opportunity to pursue an interest that they may not have time to investigate during the academic day or a sport that Nobles does not offer and in which they have significant experience and commitment. Please note: An independent project proposal for a sport offered at Nobles will not be approved.

Students must submit an application to the Afternoon Program Committee at least a week before the season in which they intend to participate in their independent project.

If a Class III or IV student does an independent project off-campus, their remaining two seasons must be on-campus activities unless they are given permission by the Afternoon Program Committee.

V ISUAL A RTS

In Afternoon Art students will have the opportunity to create a range of projects with a focus on playful experimentation. Projects can be explored using a variety of media, including ceramics, painting, drawing, photography and printmaking. The art faculty will teach students elements of design, like pattern, shape, rhythm and value, and to provide young artists the critical tools to elevate their work. No experience is necessary and the emphasis will be on exploration. Fall afternoon art is open Classes I– IV and the spring season is designed for Classes V-VI students.

Y EAR b OO k

The school yearbook is published annually to commemorate both the senior class and the school year. The book serves as a record of the events, organizations, and teams that underlie our school community. Upper School students can work on the yearbook staff as their afternoon program activity each fall and winter season. The staff is responsible for both designing the book and marketing it to the student body. Staff meetings are scheduled for 75 minutes, four days a week. Students are also asked to spend some additional time working independently to take photos and design pages.

EXCEL – EXPERIENTIAL AND COMMUNITY ENGAGED LEARNING

Experiential and Community Engaged Learning (EXCEL) is critical to the Nobles mission to motivate students to achieve their highest potential and to inspire leadership for the public good. EXCEL provides the tools, context and inspiration for each student to discover and pursue thier passions with confidence, creativity and responsibility. It is through EXCEL that Nobles develops citizenship, collaboration, empathy, resilience, appropriate risk taking and character. On campus, EXCEL principles are integrated into the academic and afternoon programs. Off campus, EXCEL principles foster the development and sustenance of partnerships for study, service, exploration and community engagement in Greater Boston, across the country and around the world. Finally, EXCEL strengthens the rigor of the academic program, and it is where we most effectively motivate students to, as our mission says, “lead lives characterized by service to others.” Nobles is committed to developing purposeful programming that advances the school’s mission and achieves EXCEL’s educational objectives.

EXCEL programs:

• Promote student-initiated and project-based learning with substantive faculty interaction and support;

• Expose students to authentic, real-world challenges that require multidisciplinary analysis and response;

• Encourage students to problem solve individually and collaboratively, develop research skills, navigate ambiguity, and respond to setbacks;

• Immerse students in unfamiliar communities and environments, expanding their view of themselves and the world;

• Push students to demonstrate their learning through substantial and shared final products.

EXCEL Programs

COMMUNITY SERVICE/SERVICE LEARNING

To meet our mission of inspiring leadership for the public good, Nobles engages in a required Service Learning program that empowers our students to experience the world in order to learn from it and to be of committed and substantive service to others. Working together, Nobles students and teachers learn how to serve productively with partners in settings that are often unfamiliar and challenging. While learning how to solve problems as they emerge and being exposed to complex issues, Nobles students expand their view of themselves and the world, build empathy, independence, teamwork, resilience, and humility, and come to understand that through their individual actions they make a positive difference in the lives of others.

In order to graduate, each student must submit 80 documented hours of service to others, pre-approved by the Community Service Department and create a reflection portfolio that could include reflective journal entries, video or artwork, personal interviews, etc.

Nobles offers Community Service as an option to Upper School students each season. Nobles has worked for many years with partners such as Community Servings, Cook’s After School Program in Needham Public Housing, the Riverdale School in Dedham and the Ohrenberger School in Boston. During each season, there will be several group seminars, discussions and activities designed to broaden the students’ understanding of the greater social issues their service work is addressing and to allow them time to reflect on their work as a group. Successful completion of one season of Afternoon Program Community Service grants 40-60 hours towards the Nobles service requirement only if all obligations of the program (including attendance on site, at meetings and weekend events) are met. This is a five day per week commitment.

Independent service projects

Students often fulfill their required community service hours with projects outside of the Nobles service program. The Service Office has a wide array of suggestions and examples of previous placements on file. Students are also encouraged to network on their own to find a suitable placement. Once a suitable placement has been found, and information is submitted for acceptance by the Service Office, the work itself may be performed. To receive credit, (for both summer and school year projects) students should submit the following:

1. an agreement signed by the student, a parent or guardian, and an on-site supervisor (contract forms can be found on the Nobles VeraCross website);

2. an evaluation form from the on-site supervisor, including the number of hours completed at the site (the supervisor may not be a family member);

3. a journal or equivalent project (see above);

4. good attendance, both on-site and at any required meetings.

The Community Service Office grants final approval for community-service credit. Any special circumstances, requests, transfer of hours from former school or explanations must be submitted in writing to the Community Service Office.

Service travel and immersion

Working with nonprofit partners across the United States and in other parts of the world, Nobles offers trips each year where service is an integral part of the experience. Nobles’ service-based trips can grant up to 50 hours toward a student’s community service graduation requirement.

Clubs, organizations, athletic teams, theater & gallery initiatives and individual projects

Many clubs, organizations, athletic teams, theater groups, the Foster Gallery and individual Nobles students are productively engaged with service work and partner with organizations throughout Greater Boston and beyond. Through “drives,” sales, Art Street and myriad events (e.g., Walk for Hunger) service permeates the Nobles culture. Whenever a Nobles group or individual wants to promote an event or conduct a fundraiser, one of the community-service coordinators must approve the date, type of

event, location and promotion.

EXCEL travel & immersion programs:

To encourage our graduates to become responsible, empathic and skilled global citizens, Nobles offers a variety of challenging domestic and international travel opportunities. Nobles creates and sustains long-term partnerships with like-minded organizations across the country and around the world.

At Nobles, students and adults work together on trips involving community service, language immersion, cultural exchange, intellectual pursuit, and physical challenge. These shared experiences develop in students an ethic of connectedness and a conviction that individuals can make a difference.

Students and parents are made aware of the offerings early each fall and students apply for specific programs in late October and are notified in early November. Financial aid is available for all programs and aid applications are due with trip applications.

All students who go on a Nobles-sponsored trip are ambassadors for the school. As representatives of the school, students need to adhere to the code of conduct stipulated in the trip contract signed by students, parents, and chaperones.

All school rules in The Guide apply to Nobles students on Nobles-sponsored trips. Any student can be sent home at the family’s expense at the discretion of the chaperones for violations ranging from offensive behavior to the use of illegal drugs or alcohol, including leaving the group without permission or failure to follow a chaperone’s instructions.

Questions about Nobles off-campus cross-cultural travel & immersion programs should be directed to either Laura Yamartino - EXCEL/Coordinator of Nobles Travel or the faculty member leading a particular trip.

Off-Campus Educational Programs

Nobles encourages students to take advantage of off-campus educational programs and believes they represent an important component in the educational development of our students. Unless exempted by the Committee of Certification, a student is required to spend two of their final four semesters on campus. Students will be granted credit for work completed at approved programs, but these grades will not be factored into the internal, unweighted Nobles GPA. Courses from other institutions that students want to satisfy graduation requirements (i.e., visual or performing arts) must be approved by the department head and/or certification committee.

The school absolves itself of any liability for injuries incurred by students while away on any programs.

All students who study away from Nobles for a semester or a year must understand that they are ambassadors of the school. Any student who is subject to disciplinary action for behavior while studying away from Nobles is subject to disciplinary consequences from Nobles (including the potential for dismissal from Nobles). Additionally, if the student’s academic performance while away would qualify them for academic probation

at Nobles, that status will be imposed upon their return to Nobles.

Students who decide to participate in an academic off-campus program for either semester must complete and submit the Study Away Commitment Form to the EXCEL Study Away Coordinator by April 10th. Failure to submit this form before the April 10th deadline could result in a student not being given permission to study away from Nobles during the upcoming academic year.

Students who are studying away during the second semester must complete a Study Away Interim Plan (form distributed in November), which outlines a detailed plan for the time period between the start of the second semester and their departure. This plan must be submitted to the EXCEL Study Away Coordinator, and must be approved by the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) and advisor. If and when the student is on campus during this time period, they need to abide by all school rules and will be subject to the same disciplinary consequences as all other students if the rules are not followed.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND STUDY AWAY

Students may use Nobles’ financial assistance for the following programs with which Nobles has longstanding relationships: African Leadership Academy, Alexander Muss High School Israel, Alzar School, High Mountain Institute, Island School, Maine Coast Semester, the Mountain School, NuVU, School for Ethics and Global Leadership, and School Year Abroad. For all other study-away programs, Nobles is not able to offer financial assistance. Students who receive assistance from Nobles and wish to spend a semester or year away at one or more of the aforementioned programs should apply to the study-away programs for financial assistance as well as complete their regular Nobles financial-assistance application. Students who elect to extend their study away to the second semester after the school year has commenced will be responsible for secondterm tuition payment to Nobles unless they have received specific permission from the head of school.

STUDENT LIFE

Community Principles

It is expected that students will conduct themselves, at all times, in a manner consistent with our Community Principles: honesty and respect for self and others. Noble and Greenough School (as stated in each student’s signed enrollment agreement) reserves the right to dismiss any student whose schoolwork or behavior, on or off-campus, is deemed unacceptable.

Also, any student who organizes or hosts what the school considers to be a large, unsupervised party, where alcohol and other illegal drugs are consumed, must understand that they risk their position at the school and may be subject to dismissal.

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is at the very heart of the school’s tradition and is central to its mission. As outlined in our Community Principles above, any incident of academic dishonesty is a violation of community trust.

Plagiarism

Statement on Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act, whether intentional or inadvertent, of presenting words, ideas, arguments, computer programs, and academic or creative work of another as one’s own.

It often takes one or more of the following forms:

l. Including in one’s paper a passage taken directly from a book, website, or any other source (including the output of a generative AI tool, or the work of a current or past student) without using quotation marks, a footnote, and/or bibliographic entry.

2. Paraphrasing a passage from any of the aforementioned sources without using a correct citation or a bibliographic entry to indicate the source of the material.

3. Taking ideas from a source (including printed materials, content generated by AI tools, the work of a current or past student, any other person, or content from the Internet) and incorporating those ideas into one’s work as if they were the products of one’s own thinking. Here, too, the source must be credited through a footnote, bibliographic entry, or other attribution.

4. Self-plagiarism: Submitting work previously turned in to another teacher without explicit permission from both teachers.

5. Inappropriate use of generative AI, electronic, paper, or human translators.

Cheating Statement on Cheating

Cheating includes using unauthorized notes or other aids in a quiz, test or exam, or copying from another student’s work during a quiz, test, exam or other assessment. Cheating also includes giving unauthorized aid to another student, allowing another student to copy or use one’s test, quiz, paper or homework, as well as accepting help from a friend, family member, tutor, or generative AI tool, on homework or take-home tests that are beyond the limits specified by the teacher.

Intellectual Property Theft

The pirating of any copyrighted material (electronic software, music, texts, etc.) is considered theft and is a violation of Nobles’ principle of honesty.

Hazing, Bullying and Harassment

Each member of the Nobles community is expected to observe the principle of equal opportunity and to adhere to our community principles of honesty and respect for self and others. Forms of coercion, bullying and/or harassment are not acceptable, will not be tolerated, and may rise to the level of illegality. Demeaning statements or materials, uninvited physical advances, hazing or threats undermine the foundations of our community and will not be tolerated. The school will not tolerate behavior that discriminates another’s identity, age, race, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation, appearance, or socioeconomic status.

Statement

on Hazing

Hazing is defined as any conduct or method of initiation into any student organization, whether on public or private property, which willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any student or other person. Hazing will not be tolerated at Nobles.

Statement on Bullying

Bullying is defined as repetitive, unwanted, aggressive behavior toward another that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Bullying can be physical, verbal or social. In this regard, Nobles students may be held accountable for their behaviors on and off campus, as well as online and through social media.

Governor Deval Patrick signed into law Chapter 92 of the Acts of 2010 to address bullying occurring in schools during school-related events and during non-school events, which may create a hostile school and learning environment. The law may be viewed at mass.gov

Statement on Harassment

Harassment, which can include stalking, hate crimes and cyber-bullying, occurs when one person acts in a way designed to annoy, provoke, threaten or otherwise cause another person emotional distress. Harassment in the school community, on or off-campus, will not be tolerated. Some examples of harassment may include, but are not limited to, the following types of activities:

• Behaviors that hurt another person and are often defended with, “I was just kidding.”

• Behaviors that denigrate others.

Sexual harassment is unwanted sexual or gender-based behaviors that occur when one person has formal or informal power over the other. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when:

• submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of a person’s employment or academic advancement;

• submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions or academic decisions affecting the person;

• such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with a per son’s work or academic performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or of fensive working or academic environment.

Based on the Policy Statement on Sexual Harassment, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 1984, with additional wording to reflect coverage of students under Title IX.

Reporting Incidents of Harrasment/ Bullying

How and to Whom to Report the Incident: Reporting an incident may be done verbally or in writing. Students report such incidents to their advisors, class dean, school counselor, teacher, head of the middle school, head of the upper school, the assistant head of upper school or the assistant head of the Middle school.

In all instances, the confidentiality of all parties will be protected to the extent permitted by the investigative process and the nature of the complaint. Students have a moral obligation to ensure that other members of the school community are safe and at all times are treated with respect.

Students who fail to intervene or report behavior that hurts or denigrates others may find themselves asked to explain their inaction.

Vandalism–Personal and School Property

Respect for the property of others is essential in maintaining trust and community openness. Individuals who steal or vandalize personal or school property commit a major affront against the community and will face disciplinary action.

Statement on Weapons

Weapons of any sort (firearms, knives, sharp objects, explosives, etc.) are forbidden anywhere on campus. Possession of a weapon may result in expulsion and possible criminal charges.

Statement on Alcohol and Other Substance Use

The use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or edibles/gummies or vaping on campus is strictly prohibited. Use of alcohol, marijuana, edibles/gummies away from campus may also be grounds for discipline, including expulsion.

Images and/or Recordings

Images or recordings posted on the web that violate our Community Principles may result in disciplinary action or immediate dismissal.

No images or recordings may be taken during a class, practice or any school function without official school sanction (Nobles Photo Corps, Yearbook, Nobleman, etc.) or without permission from the faculty member in charge.

DAILY RULES

Philosophy

The daily rules are a critical part of the framework that allows for a positive, safe learning environment to be the norm at Noble and Greenough School. Students, faculty and staff share responsibility in upholding the letter and spirit of the rules.

Attendance

General Expectations

•Be on Time: Students are expected to attend and be on time to all school commitments (classes, regular assembly, Afternoon Program activity, long assembly, study hall, music lessons and other required school events). School begins at 8:00 a.m. each day.

•Be on Campus: Students are expected to be on campus from 8:00 a.m. until the end of the academic day. In the upper school the end of the academic day is: at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday. After the Thanksgiving Break, Class I students will have a privilege that allows them to leave campus during the school day without separate parent/ guardian permission. All students who go off campus must sign in and out at the front desk. Unless granted permission by a dean or division head, students may not leave campus on foot for any destination, including home.

•Parent/Guardian Communication: A parent/guardian is responsible for communicating the reason their child needs to miss, be late to, or be dismissed from one or more school commitments on a given day. Parents or guardians may communicate online (preferred), via email to attendance@nobles.edu, or via a phone call to 781326-3700. Communication of this nature should occur by 8:00 a.m.

•School Communication: If a daily attendance record shows that a student is not on campus and there is no documented reason for the absence, then the parent/guardian will be contacted by by e-mail and then, if necessary, by phone to confirm the safety and whereabouts of the student.

•Sign in/Sign out: Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. must sign in at the front desk. A student with permission to leave campus during the class day (due to appointment, illness, driving lesson, senior privilege, etc.) must sign out at the front desk. Students returning to campus must sign in at the front desk. Failure to do either will result in disciplinary action.

Tardiness:

•General: If students are not present at their assigned school commitment at 8:00 a.m., then they are considered late. Students will not be able to enter regular assembly after the doors close. For long assembly, students will be allowed to enter as late as 8:15 a.m. but will receive a tardy designation on that day’s attendance. The tardy will receive a designation of either excused or unexcused.

•Excused tardy (ET): Students will receive this designation as long as communication from a parent/guardian has occurred or there is an unusual circumstance en route. Even though the tardy is excused, an ET that results in a missed class or long assembly could still result in a student’s inability to participate in the Afternoon Program on that day. If a student misses a significant number of assemblies due to

ETs, then the advisor will communicate with a parent/guardian to discuss the situation.

•Unexcused tardy (UT): Students will receive this designation if there is no supported excuse from a parent/guardian or if the reason provided by the student is inadequate. A UT that results in a missed class or long assembly will be viewed as a “class skip,” which warrants a detention and a student’s inability to participate in the Afternoon Program on that day.

•UT allowances: Students are allowed a certain number of UTs during each defined Afternoon Program season.

Boarding students can miss the following number of assemblies without consequence: 3 in fall, 4 in winter, 3 in spring.

a 4th (5th in winter) unexcused assembly absence results in the following:

a. in-person discussion with the Director of Residential Life and Class Dean

b. call home

a 5th (6th in winter) unexcused assembly absence results in an in-house detention

a 6th (7th in winter) unexcused assembly absence initiates more serious disciplinary discussion.

Day students can miss the following number of assemblies without consequence: 3 in fall, 4 in winter, 3 in spring.

a 4th (5th in winter) unexcused assembly absence results in the following:

a. in-person discussion with the Class Dean

b. call home

a 5th (6th in winter) unexcused assembly absence results in an additional detention.

a 6th (7th in winter) unexcused assembly absence results in an in-house detention.

a 7th (8th in winter) unexcused assembly absence results in disciplinary proceedings, which could include discussions with the Discipline Committee and/or the Head of School.

Nobles Assembly Attendance Policy

Assembly is at the core of the Nobles Community; therefore, student attendance is required.

a. Students must be in their assembly seat at 8am.

b. The doors of Lawrence close at 7:59am. Once the doors close, a student will not be allowed to enter the auditorium even if they are in line to enter. Students are encouraged not to linger in social spaces after the warning bell sounds and to arrive

at school with adequate time to get their assembly seat.

c. Students are allowed 10 total assembly absences per year without consequence. We believe that ten assembly absences without consequence per year (approximately three assembly absences per season) allows for an appropriate amount of flexibility, and we ask that you plan accordingly.

d. These excused absences are divided accordingly:

i. Students may miss three assemblies in the fall: start of school until Thanksgiving Break (September 7, 2023November 21, 2023)

ii. Students may miss four assemblies in the winter: first day of classes following Thanksgiving Break until one week prior to the last day of the3rd quarter (November 27, 2023 - March 1, 2024)

iii. Students may miss three assemblies in the spring: the Monday prior to the last day of the 3rd quarter until graduation (March 4, 2024 - May 31, 2024)

e. If students exceed the allowed missed absences in a particular season, they will serve a 45-minute detention. Detentions are held from 3:15-4pm on Tuesday afternoons, and students who serve a detention are not allowed to participate in Afternoon Program that day. Additional missed assemblies will result in additional detentions and conversations with a Class Dean.

f. We do not distinguish between planned or unplanned assembly absences. An absence is an absence. Any of the following are considered an absence and will count as a missed assembly:

i. Medical appointments

ii. Dental/Orthodontic appointments

iii. Traffic delays caused by construction, accidents (exceptions will be made if the student and/or family are directly involved in an accident), etc.

iv. Missed alarm, intentional sleep-in, and other planned or un planned delays

g. Students and their families will receive an automated reminder each time they miss an assembly. This reminder is intended to help students keep track of their assembly absences. Some assemblies involve a great deal of student movement, and the Class Deans will make mistakes. If a student receives a notification of a missed assembly in error, we encourage them to follow up via email or in person with their Class Deans to clarify the situation.

h. If during the year, a student is diagnosed with a medical condition that may prevent them from attending assembly for a short period of time (e.g. a concussion, mono, recovery from a surgical procedure), a note from a doctor is required by our Health Center. Per the doctor’s note, assembly absences resulting from this condition will NOT count towards the allowable number of missed assemblies for the season. The student’s ongoing condition and return to assembly will be monitored by our nurses.

Missed Class or Long Assembly

If a student misses either a class or a long assembly with no excuse, then it is treated as a “skip” and they will receive a detention. Additionally, they are not allowed to participate in the afternoon program that day. If a student misses a class or long

assembly for health-related reasons, then it will be viewed as “excused,” but depending on the circumstances, they may still not participate in the Afternoon Program that day.

Absence From School UNPLANNED

Should an issue arise that requires a student to miss a day of school, then the parent/guardian must call the front desk by 8:00 a.m. on that day. If the matter extends beyond one day, then the additional step of communicating with the appropriate advisor and/or division head is warranted.

PLANNED

•Family, activity, sport, trips, etc: The school strongly discourages extended, planned absences from school. This specifically includes the addition of a day (or more) to the beginning or end of a school break. A parent/guardian should communicate a request for their child(ren) to miss consecutive days of school for any reason to the appropriate division head. Such absences will count toward the Nobles “20 percent rule.”

•College Visits: Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to heed the advice of the college counselors as it concerns the quantity and timing of college visits during the school year.

•Medical Leaves: The school may grant or request a student medical leave of absence for a specific period of time. This decision will be made by the division head in consultation with the head of school and school medical professionals and often with parents/guardians, physicians and appropriate members from the faculty. The division head and class dean will work with the student’s teachers and advisor to outline a plan for ongoing academic work (if possible).

•Class Assignments/Homework: Students who miss school have the responsibility to communicate with their teachers and to stay up-to-date. This includes obtaining assignments and other class-related materials. Exceptions to this expectation are those with an individualized plan due to an approved medical leave.

•Parents/Guardians Absence from Home: If a person other than the parent(s)/ guardian(s) will be taking care of a student for consecutive days, then the parent(s)/ guardian(s) must provide the appropriate division head or class dean with the name and contact information for the person(s) responsible for their child(ren).

20 PERCENT AbSENCE RULE

If a student misses 20 percent of the total number of class meetings in either semester, the school may choose to invoke disciplinary or academic sanctions, which could include, but are not limited to, loss of credit or a grade reduction. All absences will be included in the count. The school retains the right to determine which absences are excused and unexcused and may require confirmation from an appropriate professional.

LEAVING FOR ALL OR PART OF AN ACADEMIC DAY

• Due to Non-Illness: Once a student has arrived at school, they are not permitted to leave campus before the end of the academic day without permission from a parent/guardian. Communication must be made by a parent/guardian in advance via the online portal, email to attendance@nobles.edu, or phone call to the front desk. Additionally, students must sign out before leaving. If returning before the end of the class day, then students must sign in

• Due to Illness: If a student becomes ill during the course of the school day, then they must see a school nurse before missing a school commitment or leaving school.

• Students are not allowed to depart campus on foot unless they have explicit permission from the division head or assistant division head.

Assembly

• Food and/or drink are prohibited in Lawrence Auditorium.

• Students may not study, read or have study materials open during morning assembly or class meetings.

• Cell phone use, including texting, is not allowed during morning assembly or class meetings.

• Cell phone calls are to be made only in case of an emergency.

General behaviors NOT permitted

• The use of electronic devices that distracts others;

• The use of electronic devices or technologies in class without explicit permission by the teacher;

• Inappropriate or offensive language;

• The use of headphones or earbuds except for a class or academic endeavour;

• The playing of audio devices at a volume that encroaches on others;

• General horseplay;

• Leaving an area in disarray (students must clean up after themselves);

• Gratuitous and/or excessive public displays of affection.

Driving Privileges

• The campus speed limit (15 mph) must be strictly adhered to; reckless behaviors by either the driver or those in the vehicle may result in the loss of driving privileges.

• Unless otherwise excused by a parent or guardian, a student’s car must remain parked from the time of the student’s arrival in the morning until their depar ture from campus at the end of the day.

• Any student driving off-campus during the academic day must sign out and sign in upon return.

• Students must park in one of three (4) areas during the academic day: North Lot, McLeod Lot (Class I only) or the Rink Lot and MAC lot before the traffic circle.

• Boarding students are allowed to park in the Tennis Court Lot.

• Parking in other areas (behind the MAC, staff, visitor, handicap, around pools or other non-student areas) is prohibited.

Driving, Riding and Parking

OFF-CAMPUS AND SCHOOL-SPONSORED TRIPS/EVENTS

Transportation for any school-sponsored event will be provided by the school in one of the following ways:

• contracted transportation company

• Nobles vehicle driven by a licensed Nobles employee

• personal vehicle driven by licensed Nobles employee

Any other transportation arrangements for a school-sponsored trip/event will be communicated to parents in order to receive permission for each student.

School-sponsored trips may include, but are not limited to, off-campus mandatory sports practices/contests, community-service Afternoon Program activities, field trips, class retreats, advisor-advisee functions and extracurricular club trips.

Optional activities and non-school-sponsored trips/events such as team dinners, independent projects and senior-leave privileges are the responsibility of the students and families to coordinate and establish parameters for children as drivers or riders.

COMMUTE TO AND FROM CAMPUS (DRIVING OR RIDING)

A parent/guardian has the responsibility for how their child makes the commute to/from campus and with whom it is appropriate for their child to ride or drive with for commutes, optiona activities and non-school-sponsored trips/events.

Dress Code

During the academic day, students should wear clothing that conveys and creates a readiness to learn. Students are allowed choice with regard to dress, but must adhere to these guidelines:

1. All clothing should be clean, in good condition, and free of rips, tears, or holes.

2. Denim (free of rips, tears, and/or holes) is permitted.

3. The following are NOT permitted:

a. Leggings, sweatpants, joggers of sweatshirt material, and athletic tights; exceptions are leggings or tights as layers under a skirt or dress;

b. Athletic shorts;

c. Exposed undergarments or midsection;

d. Hats, hoods on heads, or other headwear indoors; exceptions are

for religious observance, medical reasons, or permission from an administrator.

4. Shirts, sweatshirts, and sweaters may be either:

a. Nobles apparel

b. Non-Nobles apparel

c. If the non-Nobles apparel has a brand insignia or words, they must be no larger than the size of a fist. Suitable patterns and designs are acceptable.

5. Footwear is required at all times.

Putnam Library and General Expectations

The Putnam Library serves the Nobles community as a center to pursue academic study. Users are expected to monitor their behavior and understand the rules/guidelines to achieve a comfortable, respectful study atmosphere.

Meals

Nobles offers lunch to all members of the school community. Breakfast and dinner are included in tuition for residential students. Day students may sign up for dinner (by 3 p.m.) and will be charged for that meal. Day students may take breakfast here without signing up beforehand; however, they must sign up when they arrive at breakfast and will be charged for that meal as well.

Procedures For Violations of Community Principles

The fundamental goal of the process outlined below is to ensure a fair, consistent and reasonable response to violations of Nobles’ Community Principles and rules. In cases that do not result in expulsion, Nobles is committed to supporting a student when they make a mistake and working with them to turn such situation into a meaningful learning experience. In the event of a violation of academic honesty, additional consequences related to one’s academic status may result.

When a faculty member believes that a violation has occurred, the faculty member should confer immediately with the division head, assistant division head or class dean. The purpose of that meeting will be to ascertain the nature of the alleged violation and to consider appropriate next steps.

Options available following these meetings are:

a) The student is sanctioned by the division head or the assistant division head or a person designated by that person because the circumstances do not warrant a referral to the Disciplinary Committee.

b) The case is referred to the Disciplinary Committee.

c) The head of school or division head will handle the case directly.

The division head, assistant division head or a designated administrator will also contact the student’s parents/guardians. In cases of middle school violations, the middle school head will notify the student, the student’s advisor, the student’s parents/guardians and the head of school.

Disciplinary Committee

The upper-school disciplinary committee shall consist of a chair appointed by the head of school, four elected faculty members and four students elected by their classes. The middle-school committee shall consist of the two faculty members from the middle school core and the dean of students.

The Disciplinary Committee recommends penalties to the head of school, who reserves the right to modify the committees’ recommendations or, in extraordinary cases, to take action without convening the committees.

After the Disciplinary Committee (DC) Process

After the completion of the Disciplinary Committee process, the head of school or their designee may recount the general circumstances of a disciplinary situation and the punishment to the school community.

Even when formal probationary status is not assigned, any student involved in disciplinary proceedings who is permitted to remain at Nobles must understand that any future abrogation of the school Community Principles may result in their dismissal from Nobles.

Suspension

If a student is suspended, they are not permitted to be on campus during the suspension unless specifically invited by the head of school or division head. In addition, a suspended student is responsible for the academic work that occurs during the time of suspension. They should work through their advisor to secure assignments. Teachers will assist a suspended student but are not expected to “re-teach” all classes missed.

In-house Suspension

As a consequence of a disciplinary action (including cases brought to the Disciplinary Committee, the accumulation of detentions, or other infractions) students may be given an in-house suspension. During the day(s) of an in-house suspension, students are on-campus and remain in an isolated area when not attending class.

Expulsion

If a student is asked to leave the school as the result of a disciplinary action, the student will automatically be considered persona non grata. This status mandates that they not appear on campus unless specifically invited by the head of school. This status may also be used when a student withdraws from the school.

Disclosure Policy

We counsel students to disclose on all applications in which a student is specifically asked to do so. Noble and Greenough School reserves the right to disclose when the school determines that a student’s actions have put thier place at the school in jeopardy. Each year of adolescence carries with it unique educational, social and developmental challenges, and while each adolescent’s path and timetable may be different, there are some similar and predictable occurrences. At each grade level at Nobles, there exists a team of faculty members charged with helping students to navigate their paths. The anatomy of the school’s support system for students is as follows:

The Class Deans and Head of Middle School (for Classes V and VI) are the teams charged with the well-being of an entire class. They oversee the social, academic and developmental needs of the class and serve as a resource for both parents and students.

Advising

Advising is a central component of the Nobles educational program. Each student is assigned an advisor who should be a significant and reliable adult for the student at the school.

Advisor responsibilities include:

Personal Advice

• Serve as initial source of help for personal matters

Program Advice

• Oversee Afternoon Program choices and involvement

• Assist in selecting extracurricular activities

Student-to-School Liaison

• Advise and assist students on matters of day-to-day life in the school (e.g, Community Principles, rules and general problem-solving)

In the advisor assignment process, priority is given to Class I and to students who request their previous year’s advisor. Other students are assigned to advisors based upon their choices and faculty availability.

Changes in advisors will not be made except in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Concerns about advisor assignments or advising in general should be addressed to the dean of students.

Counseling

Nobles’ student support services include a counseling department. Referrals to counseling services at Nobles can be made by individual students, parents, guardians or faculty members, either by phone, by email or in person. Counselors are available to meet with students five days a week. Services offered include individual counseling on campus, referrals to outside licensed mental health professionals, and on-campus support groups. The boarding community has access to an on-call counselor should an emergency arise during non-academic hours.

Conversations with the counselors will be kept confidential except where the counselor determines in good faith that disclosure is either required by statute (Mass. Statute 5lA) or necessary to protect the health or well-being of the student or other members of the school community.

If you are emergently concerned about the safety of a community member, please call 911.

Alcohol and Other Drugs

The use of alcohol, tobacco or other illegal drugs on campus is prohibited.

The school cares deeply about the physical and mental health of its students. Alcohol and other illegal drugs disrupt the intellectual, social and emotional development of the student. Consequently, Nobles is committed to helping students struggling with alcohol and other illegal drugs, and to helping those who might be affected by alcohol and drug abuse by others. The intent of this section is to outline the school’s commitment to helping members of its community.

The school condones neither the serving of alcohol to Nobles students nor the use of private homes for student parties at which alcohol and/or other illegal drugs are consumed. If and when information comes to the attention of the school of a gathering where such behavior is deemed possible, the school will contact the parents, guardians or other responsible persons and may contact local police departments.

The school’s primary interest is to help students make the decision to avoid substance abuse and the use of alcohol and other illegal drugs. Therefore, students are encouraged to seek help through the school’s various support systems (e.g., advisor, counselors, school nurse, faculty and peer helpers).

Students who voluntarily seek assistance will be referred for appropriate evaluation and help. These students may also be required to meet regularly with someone from the School (counselor, dean of students, advisor, class dean).

Intervention Guidelines

When the school has reason to be concerned about a student’s emotional or physical well-being, we will engage that student. The involvement of parents/guardians in these situations may be solicited. A behaviorally based intervention approach may be used in the following physical or emotional health areas, including but not limited to:

• eating and nutrition

• depression

• relationships

• stress and anxiety

• self-injury

• suicidal ideation

In certain instances, (e.g., self-harm, depression), counseling and/or a medical evaluation from a licensed physician and/or a licensed mental health professional may be a required condition for a student’s return to classes.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

All dormitory and other boarding-related regulations are available in the boarding handbook.

Five-Day Boarding

Boarding students reside at Nobles Monday through Thursday evenings, with the option of spending Friday and Sunday evenings.

l. Weekend Policies: Boarding students may sign up to stay in the building on a Friday night. Dinner is provided by campus faculty on Friday evenings and no campus sign-outs are permitted. Boarding students staying on Friday evenings must depart the Residence Hall for the weekend by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Residence Hall re-opens for students at 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Students may not return to the Residence Hall before 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.

2. Breakfast (Optional): Served from 7:00–7:45 a.m. Monday through Friday.

3. Academic Day: Boarding students must abide by all rules and commitments required of day students during the academic day.

Morning Assembly: Repeated tardiness or absence from assembly may result in suspension from the boarding program.

The Residence Hall is closed to all students, including boarders, from 8:00 a.m.–2:40 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when the dorm opens at 1:40 p.m. If a boarding student needs to go back to the building, they must find a dorm parent to assist them.

4. After school: Boarding students are expected to attend their afternoonprogram commitment each afternoon. Boarding students with an exempt season must follow the protocol for exempt students.

5. Dinner: Dinner is served in the Castle Monday through Thursday from 5:15–7:00 p.m.

6. Study Hall: Evening study hall is required for all boarding students Monday through Thursday from 7:30–9:30 p.m. Seniors in good standing may be excused from study hall during the fourth quarter of the school year with approval from the dorm parents and advisors. Quiet hours are held on Sundays from 8:00–10:00 p.m.

7. Visitors: Day students are not allowed in the Residence Hall at any time without permission from a dorm parent. Day students found in the dorm without permission will be subject to the discipline process. Boarding students who are found hosting a day student in the dorm without per mission will face suspension from the boarding program and possibly

additional consequences as deemed appropriate by the dean of students.

8. Co-visitation: Male boarding students are prohibited from the girls’ side of the dorm at all times. Female boarding students are prohibited from the boys’ side of the dorm at all times. There are no exceptions to this rule. Boarding students who violate this policy will be suspended or expelled from the boarding program.

9. Illness: An ill boarding student must see the school nurse by 8:00 a.m. With a more serious illness, a boarding student may contact a Dorm Parent or the nurse without leaving the Residence Hall. Parents/guardians should not call the school to excuse their boarding student. The school nurse is the only individual who may excuse a boarding student, and the nurse is responsible for contacting parent(s)/guardian(s) when the situation arises.

10. Off-Campus Privileges: Boarding students who arrive in their own vehicles each week are not allowed to drive on their own accord during the school week. Boarding students may travel off campus with parent/guardian permission ONLY. Boarding students may travel in the car of a day student with specific parent/guardian permission. Boarding students who violate this policy will face consequences or disciplinary action.

11. Sign-In/Sign-Out Procedure: All boarding students are required to sign in to begin each study hall and to sign out when they need to be excused from study hall for another event or commitment, either school related or with parent/ guardian permission. Seniors with off-campus privileges must sign out before leaving campus and have parent permission.

12. General Rules and Expectations: Boarding students who neglect the above rules or any rules/expectations listed specifically in the Boarding Student Handbook, may face consequences or disciplinary action. Repeat offenders of rules may face suspension from the boarding program, and in some cases, expulsion from the program and/or school.

Parent and guardian participation is an integral and welcome part of school life. All parents and guardians of current Nobles students are members of Nobles Connect and are invited to attend events throughout the year and encouraged to become active participants. The schedule of Connect events is noted on the school’s calendar, with further information provided in the parents’ weekly email newsletters, on the Veracross Connect page, and via the Connect Instagram @ nobles_connect.

Through Nobles Connect, families belong, gather, and volunteer to support students and the school community. There are many ways to be a part of that effort, allowing parents and guardians to make a difference while getting to know one other and better understanding all that is Nobles. These efforts support students, thank faculty, fund scholarships and faculty enrichment, and help bond the community.

HEALTH POLICIES

Annual Requirements

In order to promote the well-being of the Nobles community, there are specific health requirements that must be met each year so that students may attend any class, sports practice, class retreat or school activity. School policy requires that every student have an annual physical with required school immunizations including a Tdap booster within five years.

NOTE: If a child has not been immunized, the parents or guardians must present documentation of religious or medical exemption prior to entrance to the School. This must be renewed annually at the start of each school year.

Medical Insurance

Each student must be covered by a medical insurance plan in order to attend Nobles. The school is not responsible for providing such a plan and does not carry any form of medical insurance for its students. Proof of medical insurance will be required each year.

Health Forms

These forms are completed each year and kept on file by the school. Any changes in emergency information should be forwarded to the Health Office as soon as they occur.

Medication Administration Policy

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications:

There are standing orders in place, signed by Nobles’ consulting school physician, for OTC medications that the nurse may administer on an as-needed basis. Parent/guardian consent for every student is on file in the Health Office for administration of these medications. Boarding students may keep a limited amount of over-the-counter medications in their rooms including acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), antacids, vitamins and cold medication.

Prescription Medications:

If a student is taking a prescription medication that is to be administered during the school day or that the student will need to take while overnight in the dorm, a Medication Order Form must be on file in the Health Office and signed by both the student’s physician and the parent/guardian. If a student is prescribed a new medication during the school year, it is the obligation of the parent/guardian to update the information in the Health Office. Controlled substances that are to be administered during the school day are locked in the Health Office medication closet and administered to the student as directed in the student’s medication plan. Any student who abuses or provides another student with these medications will face disciplinary action.

For a short-term prescription medication, such as an antibiotic, the original pharmacylabeled prescription container may serve as the medication order.

Students may carry Epi-Pens, inhalers, insulin, pancreatic enzymes and migraine medications with signed consent from the physician and parent/guardian. Boarding students are allowed to keep the following prescription medications in their dorm rooms after

consultation with the Health Office: Epi-Pens, inhalers, insulin, asthma and allergy medications, birth control pills and acne treatments.

Epi-Pen Policy:

All students with life-threatening allergies must have an Allergy Action Plan, signed by both the physician and the parent/guardian, on file in the Health Office. This plan must be on file prior to the start of the school year or any time an allergy is diagnosed. Any student with an Epi-Pen prescribed must carry the Epi-Pen at all times, including to sports and field trips. A back-up Epi-Pen must be provided to the Health Office.

Epi-Pens are kept in a number of locations (including the Castle, Wiggins Dorm and the Morrison Athletic Center) on the Noble and Greenough campus so they are easily accessible by the nurses.

Parents/guardians and students are advised to meet with the school nurses at the start of each school year to discuss the Allergy Action Plan. They are also advised to meet with the Director of Dining Services prior to the start of the school year.

Concussion Protocol

During the academic year, the Nobles Concussion Protocol supports the academic, physical and emotional well-being of a concussed student in coordination with the recommendations by the involved physicians. The school nurse is the conduit for all medical information relating to the student’s head injury. The Concussion Management Coordinator (CMC) manages the various levels of communication throughout the recovery stages with those working directly with the student to form plans for the Concussion Management Team (CMT) to review and activate. The student’s advisor serves as the point person with both parent and student as it concerns review of the action plan that is in place.

Step 1: Notification and Precaution

Whether an accident that results in concussion symptoms occurs under Nobles supervision or otherwise, the nurses or athletic trainers need notification of the injury as quickly as possible. In turn, the CMC alerts the student’s teachers and CMT about the potential concussion in order to properly support the student until further evaluation occurs. Through assessment of the student and available information by Nobles (Health Office, Sports Medicine Office, School Physician or School Concussion Specialist), a determination will be made as to whether to require a doctor’s appointment and diagnosis of the injury. If this is judged as necessary, then the school nurse will communicate the directive to the parent and the student is withheld from Nobles physical activity. Academic accommodations could also be initiated.

Step 2: Doctor Appointment Diagnosis

Nobles requires written documentation from the student’s physician or concussion specialist regarding evaluation of the head injury. Until securing a diagnosis from the student’s doctor, the school nurse will initiate necessary accommodations based on the assessments made by Nobles (Health Office, Sports Medicine Office, School Physician or School Concussion Specialist). A concussion diagnosis will trigger the next steps of the protocol in coordination with any recommendations from the doctor.

Step 3: Return to Academics – Academic Accommodations

The time it takes to recover from a concussion varies for each student. The general progression to return fully to academics involves prescribed movement through the Rest, Passive Learning and Active Learning recovery stages. The CMT implements plans that include educational accommodations based on reported symptoms and in coordination with any recommendations by his/her doctor. In the early portion of this step, a school counselor will meet with the student to discuss challenges that can present themselves within a concussion recovery. Continuous communication among the CMT, parents, student and physician allows for updated information that may necessitate changes to the academic plan during the student’s recovery.

Step 4: Return to Nobles Physical Activity (4 Days)

Once academically cleared (full day of school, regular load of academic work, eligible for testing, etc.) the student may begin the four-day Return to Physical Activity aspect of the protocol that is managed by the athletic trainers. This program uses two days of physical exertion testing and two days of practice to gradually return the student to full participation in a Nobles physical activity. Upon successful completion (no symptoms or setbacks) and with written clearance from the student’s physician or concussion specialist, the student is eligible to participate fully (including contests). A parent will finalize with agreement (verbal or written) for their child to return fully to the Nobles physical activity.

Medical Leave of Absence

Under the care of a physician and in consultation with the division head, a student may request or be required to take a medical leave. Students on medical leave may return to school once their treatment team/physician gives clearance to the dean of students and divison head. Regular contact with a Nobles counselor may be part of the reentry process. In cases of medical leave, a plan will be created to address the academic challenges presented by being on medical leave.

STATEMENT ON FINANCIAL AID

Families who already receive financial aid must submit a new Parent Financial Statement (PFS) no later than January 15. All supporting tax documents (1040 and W-2s) must be submitted no later than March 1. If this information is not received by the stated deadlines, the Financial Aid Committee will assume that the family no longer needs to receive financial aid.

Current families not on financial aid whose circumstances have changed and would now like to apply for financial assistance must first contact the Director of Financial Aid, before completing any of the application materials. Once a discussion has been had with the Director of Financial aid, the Financial Aid Committee will meet to determine if the family is eligible to apply for aid. Please note, we typically do not accept applications from returning families unless there is a significant change in the family’s financial circumstances.
