We managed to catch Alexis Knox away from her busy schedule of celebrity styling and stiletto nail manicures, to do the most awesome, fluffiest, 90’s inspired shoot we’ve done to date. Then we took one look at Prince, her champagne puppy, and had to get him involved too. CLUELESS was an understatement for this shoot, and her wonderful entourage swooped in boasting a rail of colour, faux fur, feather boas and enough Buffalos to put the Spice Girls to shame. Alexis Knox is the princess of pop fashion, and a true PowerPuff Girl and owns too many pairs of shoes to count; here’s what she had to say on the things that inspire her. WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING? "Where am I today?!" Every day is so so different and I travel a lot, so my first thought is always based around what the day is going to bring. It’s always something fabulous so it’s not difficult to get out of bed! DOES PRINCE HAVE A FAVOURITE OUTFIT? Prince is a hood rat really. Even though, like me, he’s a pedigree thorough bred [laughs]; he likes to keep it street in a hoody! I usually walk him through Dalston in a grey one, embellished with a crown and the name “Prince” on the back... Just so peeps don’t get it twisted and know who he is. They know he’s the main dog of Dalston! A L E X I S K N OX
WHAT INSPIRES YOU? PEOPLE! The people around me for sure, usually strangers though. I love hanging out in Dalston, particularly Ridley Road market, there are so many diverse people there. It’s honestly the most bizarre mix of people, but you see some great looks, I’m not talking hipsters, I’m talking people from across the globe and from all different walks of life. That’s where originality comes from. IS THERE SOMETHING YOU OWN THAT’S THE MOST PRECIOUS TO YOU? Apart from my Roley Bling, maybe it’s my Buffalo Boots platform collection? I’ve been building that collection for about five years now, and it’s definitely coming along. I have 4

resist the temptation to collect film cameras. Every so often I briefly consider the ethos of ‘one camera, one lens’ but I’ve managed to expand that to ‘one camera per format’, so I have a range of medium format cameras that allow me to shoot the various different sizes and proportions of medium format photograph, and then for 35mm I have a Leica rangefinder and a Canon SLR. I also have an old Polaroid 600SE that allows me to shoot really great quality instant film photographs.
with Pamela and Malcolm was one of those rare moments when literally everything you could want from a shoot comes together all at the right time.
WHAT DOES THE WORD “ADVENTURE” MEAN TO YOU?
Film has had an immense impact on my work. I can honestly say I’m not sure where I would be in terms of my photography if I’d not started shooting film. I certainly wouldn’t pick up my camera as often as I do. Above all, film has forced me to slow down and really consider what it is I want to capture. Back when I would shoot digital, I’d literally have hundreds of repetitive, very similar photos, and it would take me 10 variations in composition before I found the one that really worked. With film, I think a lot more, and I will only take 1 or 2 photographs at most of the same scene. I’ve also started shooting with diptychs in mind, so I’ll shoot an overview photograph and then look for a detail within that scene and photograph that. I like to have a focus and film makes me consider the final photograph before I’ve even taken it. My aim is always to get the photograph as close as possible ‘in-camera’ rather than having to engineer something from it afterwards.
Exploration; going off the beaten track and creating memories. DOES THE RELATIONSHIP YOU HAVE WITH ERICA HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON THE WAY YOU DOCUMENT THE LANDSCAPE? How interesting! Erica and I are definitely kindred spirits and having time together, just the two of us, is extremely important. I think in part this is why I almost always insist that my travel photographs and landscapes are free of people; the chances are that when I took the photograph I was just with Erica, so when I look back at the photograph I don’t like to see distractions - just the scene and the memories of Erica and I together in it. IS THERE ANY PARTICULAR PROJECT YOU’VE WORKED ON THAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE TO DATE? I would say it would have to be documenting Pamela & Malcolm during one of our ‘One Experience’ shoots. We created ‘One Experience’ for people who wanted to celebrate their relationship in front of the camera in a way that would actually create a memory in itself. Some time ago I read that many cultures would have a totem pole in their family house, and when there were life events that they wanted to remember, they would carve a depiction of it into the totem pole. In that way, the family’s totem pole would serve to help them remember and celebrate their lives. We shoot them all on medium format film which I think is just perfect for creating something natural and timeless. The shoot 17
HAVING WORKED WITH A RANGE OF FORMATS AND FILM, WHAT SPECIAL INFLUENCE DOES THIS HAVE OVER YOUR WORK? DO YOU FEEL IT HAS AN EFFECT ON THE STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY YOU CREATE?
DO YOU HAVE ANY “ROAD TRIPS AND ADVENTURES” PLANNED FOR THE COMING MONTHS? We’re actually just considering our options. For years we have been making annual trips to Canada where we road trip for around 3 weeks at a time. We’ve seen a vast area of western Canada but there is still a huge amount we’ve not yet seen there. Each time we tend to go more and more off the beaten track, usually ending up in places where the majority of Canadians have never even been! We may be thinking of a Christmas trip to Canada; we’ve not seen Canada in winter so it’ll be a totally different adventure with very different scenes to those we’re used to. M A I N LY A B O U T M E

because it takes me to these amazing places. It does mean that I don’t feel like I belong in any one place. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR THE REST OF 2014? Well, last year was a little quiet for me, so I want to try and do a lot of festivals and things like that, some more live stuff. I want to go back out to Ibiza too because I love it there. I also work quite tightly with a brand called Dope Chef, and we’ve been talking about collaborating on some womenswear, which isn’t something that’s forced as I’m by no means a designer. Dope Chef, by trade, are a menswear brand but if they were to take on a more feminine route, I think I’m kind of girl that would wear it. I’m not trying to be an entrepreneur, or take away from the music, but it’s a nice addition to what I’m doing; and I’m a huge fan of street-wear but women’s street-wear just isn’t up there like men’s is, so it’d be nice to make something that’s on that level for women. Oh, I also just featured on a guy called Topaz Jones’ new mix-tape. He’s one of my favourite new rappers from the States, and on top of that, I’m doing a lot of writing as a songwriter for other projects too. You could definitely say I’m keeping busy on all fronts!
SO, ARE YOU SEEING ANYONE RIGHT NOW? Nah, I’m single. Single and ready to mingle! In a weird way, I love relationships and I love breakups, because I feel like you learn so much about yourself. Or, you think you know yourself and then you get into a relationship that makes you think “Who am I? Who have I become?!” and because I write songs as well, it’s almost like I thrive off it, even the bad shit. I came out of a relationship last year, and I sort of put myself to the side for that person; I played second fiddle to them. So since coming out of that, it really re-focused my time and energy. BEARING IN MIND WE’RE ALMOST HALF WAY THROUGH THE YEAR, DID YOU HAVE ANY NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS? I’ve been a vegetarian since New Year. I saw this meme on the internet that said, “How do you know someone’s a vegetarian or vegan? Because they fucking tell you!” And it’s so true, but I actually don’t miss meat. I feel like I have so much more energy and I thought about giving up weed too, but then I thought nah! I’m a bit of a hippy really, when I’m on the bus or the tube, I just look at people and find myself wishing them well in my head. So being a veggie is just another extension of that mindset. 103
