Manifesto:

The purpose of this document is to expose and investigate the activation of urban spaces through wheat pasting basic grid structures in different environments around Raleigh, North Carolina.

These spaces are activated with the hope that they will not only compel people to observe the space, but hopefully interact with and act to curate graffiti in its many forms. Thus begins investigation 1:

Jackpot! Bar 36 Rebus Works Gallery 43 Fishmarket Gallery 44 Commerce Street 46

Abandoned House Comics Store White Wall Free Expression Wall

these locations are all fairly dynamic as far as change goes they are high risk for graffiti they change often and quickly sometimes this is an issue of a property owner being on their game the exception is the free expression wall where graffiti is allowed however, just as quickly as the comic store is whitewashed, or the abandoned house sanded or painted the free expression wall is painted over by other painters.

Abandoned House

within 14 hours of posting,

this posting generated an immediate response not quite the intervention that was expected for sure, but a sign of life nonetheless. it is clear that graffiti curation is wanted here. over the course of the rest of the investigation, no other interventions occurred.

9

Comic Book Store

when you see a blank wall like this, it is totally begging for some attention. it is white washed for a reason.

over the course of the rest of the investigation, no other interventions occured.

11

Free Expression Wall the free expression wall affords anyone the opportunity to make their voice heard. there are over 30,000 students at North Carolina State University. that piece you spent 5 hours and a ton of nice paint on might last a week, or an hour. within 10 minutes of pasting a student was attempting to rip it off the wall. the two exercises posted here lasted under 24hrs.

Investigation 1: Conclusion

After investigation 1, it is clear that there is much more to do and much more to learn. The largest constraint with this investigation was time. Like any orange tree, you can not have a sweet fruit overnight. Everything takes time to grow. More investigations are inevitable. LTS, 2009
