Must Reads in PNR

Greetings and salutations! First of all, I want to say thanks to Lenore and Brandi for having me on the blog today. Thanks so much, ladies!

So today I was asked to write about my life as an author. The short version? It’s not as glamorous as everyone thinks it is.

Seriously, it’s not. I know a lot of folks think that all authors do is write and attend book signings, but that’s just not the case. Being an author is a lot of work because you’re not just an author. You’re everything from an accountant to a blogger to a social media guru to an advertising executive.

I treat writing like a full-time job, which it is – and then some. I’m usually on the computer by 9 o’clock every morning, checking e-mail and all my social media sites and responding to all the e-mails/comments that I get. That’s a good chunk of my morning.

Then, when I’m caught up on all that, I start working on whatever projects need to get done that day/week/month. Sometimes, it’s writing my current book or doing revisions, copy edits, page proofs, etc. Other times, it’s writing guest blogs (like this one). But it’s also things like keeping up with advertising deadlines or stuffing bookmarks into envelopes to do mailings.

As an author, you are pretty much a one-woman show (unless you have an assistant, which I do not), so if you want something to get done, you have to do it yourself. I’m working on something all the time, and it’s not necessarily my latest book. You also have to get the word out about your books, which is where all the blogging, social media, advertising, etc. comes in. It’s a lot of work, and it can be overwhelming and exhausting at times. But I really enjoy what I’m doing, so that makes it

a lot of fun too, especially when you hear from readers about how much they enjoyed your latest books. Really, that sense of s atisfaction and accomplishment is all that you can ask from any job.

So there you have it – a little about what it’s like to be an author.

What about you guys? Who are some of your favorite authors and books?

USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Estep writes the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series for Pocket Books. The books focus on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional Southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

Books in the series are Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, Venom, and Tangled Threads. Spider’s Revenge, the fifth book in the series, was released on Sept. 27.

Jennifer also writes the Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series for Kensington. Touch of Frost, the first book in the series, was released in August. First Frost, a prequel e-story to the series, is available as a 99-cent download. Kiss of Frost, the second book, will be released Nov. 29.

Featuring an excerpt from Amanda Ashley’s Bound by Blood

Bound By Blood 978-1-4201-2132-2 Author: Amanda Ashley Pub Date: September 27, 2011 Imprint : Zebra Format : Paperback

EXCERPT from Chapter 4 of BOUND BY BLOOD Zack rose with the setting of the sun. For the first time since he had built the casino, his first waking thought wasn’t about going to work, but about a woman. Kaitlyn. She had been foremost in his thoughts since the minute she’d walked into the club. Not that he was complaining. He was more than happy to have a beautiful young woman running around in his head. In fact, he’d be happy as hell to have her take up permanent residence there. He grinned, thinking the lovely Kaitlyn must have bewitched him. Sure, he was crazy about women. Always had been, but he had always loved them and left them, never looking back, rarely remembering their names once he told them good-bye. But Kaitlyn, she was dif-ferent. And even though all they had shared so far was one mind-blowing kiss, he sensed he would never forget her. With a shake of his head, he left his lair and went up the private stairway to his apartment where he took a quick shower and changed into a clean shirt and a pair of pants. If he didn’t hurry, he would be late. He was doing a quick walk-through of the casino floor, on his way out, when he had the sudden sense that he was being watched. Pausing near the dice table, Zack pretended to be interested in the game while he let his preternatural powers expand. Sounds grew louder, colors brighter, smells sharper and more intense. He glanced casually around the casino, his gaze rest-ing quickly on each patron. It was still early. The crowd was light. He had no sense of another vampire on the premises, no scent of werewolf, and yet he would have sworn there was another supernatural creature in the building, although there was no trace of it now. Had he imagined it? He finished his walk-through, stopped to talk with a few of the pit bosses, conferred briefly with the head of security, and left the casino, bound for Kaitlyn’s. She opened the door before he knocked, a smile of welcome on her face. Dressed in a pair of white slacks and a lavender sweater, her cheeks flushed with color, she was even prettier than he remembered. “So,” she said, “what do you want to do tonight?” “Take a walk?” he suggested. “Go for a drive? See a movie?” “It’s a nice night for a walk,” Kaitlyn said.

“Then that’s what we’ll do.” Kaitlyn felt the same peculiar sensation she had on other occasions when he took her hand in his. Not a chill, exactly, more like a warm shiver of awareness that she felt all the way down to her toes. She pondered her strange reaction to him as they walked down the narrow, tree-lined path toward the lake. Maybe what she felt for Zack wasn’t all that extraordinary. He was an extremely handsome man, after all, and there was no denying that she was physically at-tracted to him. But then, what woman wouldn’t be? The night seemed to close in around the two of them as they neared the lake, which gleamed like a dark mirror in the light of the full moon. Zack paused at the edge of the water where some-one had thoughtfully placed a wooden bench just big enough for two. He waited until Kaitlyn sat down and then sat beside her, one arm resting on the back of the bench. A warm breeze, carrying the fecund scent of earth and foliage, rustled the leaves of the trees. A fish popped up in the middle of the lake, sending ever-widening ripples across the face of the water. “It’s lovely here,” Kaitlyn said. “Do you ever come here to swim?”

Must Reads in PNR By: Sarah Horton So if you’re an avid fan of adult Paranormal Romance, you probably have a series that you love. You’ve most likely had a few series recommended to you as well. Everyone has an opinion about what to read, but I think Paranormal Romances readers are the most passionate about their stories. Because these stories involve more than just hooking up, readers are drawn more and more into the worlds authors create within a series with each new addition to it. As a devoted adult Paranormal Romance reader, I think I have come up with the top 5 series that you just have to read if you proclaim yourself a PNR fan. The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward This series focuses on a group on a group of warrior vampires. The brothers live on a compound where they train and teach new warrior vampires to fight against a soulless race of baddies called the Lessers – whom follow an entity called the Omega and is out to destroy all vampires. Each Brother faces and overcomes a conflict while finding their soulmate. Midnight Breeds by Lara Adrian This set of vampires is part human, part ancient extraterrestrial and live among humans peacefully. The warriors of the Order are charged with maintaining the laws and securing justice for the race. Rogue vampires are beginning to run rampant and a war within the race is brewing – it’s up to the Order to stop it. Throughout the series, each warrior is challenged with their personal fears and demons. They also find their Breedmate, a rare woman with a distinctive birthmark. Each woman has some sort of psychic ability, only to be enhanced after bonding with their mate. Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter Pandora’s Box, which held the great evils and sins of the world, was opened by a cadre of immortal warriors. They didn’t count on being possessed by those demons in return. Violence, Pain, Death, Disease, Disaster, Misery, Doubt, Promiscuity, Defeat, Lies, Secrets, and Wrath must survive and thrive within the Lords, who have dedicated themselves to doing good for humankind. Each Lord goes suffers a trial or two while also finding the one woman who calms their demon and offers them love. The Lords and their women live together in a large

complex to protect themselves from a group known as the Hunters. They also have to deal with Cronus and other such beings from mythology. Psy/Changling by Nalini Singh The Psy-Changeling series is set in a futuristic reality on earth. There are three races: Humans, Psy and Changelings. The Psy are humans with psychic powers that have been brainwashed from birth to repress emotions and feelings. Changelings are born shapeshiters varying from wolves to cats, to just about any animal. During the course of this series, these three races intersect and at times, love is found in the most unconventional ways. Each installment of this series revolves around a different man and woman usually crossing the race barrier. Warriors of Poseidon by Alyssa Day Atlantis’s destruction was caused by the greed of humanity. Poseidon sunk Atlantis to the bottom of the ocean until a certain set of tasks could be completed. A group of warriors are tasked with keeping humanity and Atlantis safe from evil and harm. Each warrior must overcome the dangers at hand and at the same time their soulmate comes into their life. The warriors and their loves are on the hunt for ancient relics that will enable Atlantis to rise from the ocean. There are vampires, shapeshifters, fae and all sorts of beings throughout the series. These are the series I think are a must, if you’re into adult Paranormal Romance. Some honorable mentions include: Demonica by Larissa Ione, Darkyn by Lynn Viehl, Nightwalkers by Jacquelyn Frank, Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole, and the Dar k Hunters by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Visit NRR’s website to check out reviews of some of these great series, and let us know what you think!

SOUL MATE

ONE GRAVE AT A TIME Jeaniene Frost 5 Hoots

Catherine Bybee 3 Hoots

In One Grave at a Time, Jeaniene Frost delivers another captivating installment to the Night Huntress series! So, to all the fans of this fantastic series, you will enjoy One Grave at a Time! As for those who have not had the chance to read this wonderful series...what are you waiting for? Cat and Bone's are the hottest vampire duo in the genre!

Soul Mate by Catherine Bybee is a good quick read. The story is like many of others in the genre, but all the same enjoyable. There is a lot packed into this quick read and I would have loved a full length novel with these characters. I look forward to reading more by Ms. Bybee and would recommend Soul Mate for a great afternoon read!

ANGEL’S WOLF Rebecca Rayne 4 Hoots I found Royce concentrated more on the mating and character development between Angel and Parker versus the ‗what‘s going on‘s‘ of Westervelt and the big bad evil Kane father. Royce knocked the ball out of the park with this one . Pick up this series and start at the beginning, you won‘t be disappointed with this book nor any of the previous ones! (July 11, Liquid Silver)

BLADE OF THE WOLF Nicole North 5 Hoots Blade of the Wolf is a sizzling adventure and sated even my infinite fantasy for hot Scottish werewolves. This is not your run of the mill romantic urban fantasy, which I greatly appreciated. I was mesmerized by this refreshingly new perspective on the normally redundant paranormal romance/shapeshifter genre. Hats off to Nicole North for a superb job creating an edgy and erotic paranormal romance! (July 11, Ellora‘s Cave)

MUST LOVE VAMPIRES Heidi Betts 4 Hoots

Nalini Singh TOP PICK- 5 Hoots

Erotic

Master storyteller, Nalini Singh, has delivered another excellent addition to the Guild Hunters series with Archangel's Blade, which is told from Dmitri's pov. Containing plenty of romance, action, and suspense, fans of this series will simply devour the story, and be delighted with its outcome. This book is an emotional journey as both characters have been thru so much torture and heartache. Archangel's Blade can be read as a standalone, but I recommend the entire series so you can get the full effect of this brilliant world Singh has created! (Sept 11, Berkley)

Brandi

Must Love Vampires is a book containing two connected novellas, Vampnapped and Mar ried…With Fangs. Overall a good read, that is a bit boring in places, but I wouldn‘t be afraid to read it again. (Oct 11, Brava)

LAST MINION STANDING Eve Langlais 4 Hoots Eve Langlais writes dangerously sexy and witty novellas. I have not always been a fan of novellas due to the fact that some authors try and pack too much into such a short book, however, Eve Langlais in a master at them! Last Minion Standing is extremely hot, witty and fun. (April 11)

HIS SOUL TO KEEP

THE PACK

M. Flagg 3 1/2 Hoots

Jason Star 4 1/2 Hoots

I love this book. I found the characters fascinating, the dialogue engaging, and the subplot integration wonderfully executed. Although the story is a great read, and I wanted to give it a higher rating, but the ending left more question than answers. Since this is the last book in the trilogy, I am left wondering what happens. If you can overlook those flaws, His Soul to Keep is a great read.

As a newcomer to Jason Starr‘s work, I had my doubts that he could entice me with a story about werewolves in New York City. I‘m here to say I was completely wrong. The Pack held me captive until the very last page. Starr‘s writing style allows you to become the main character, Simon Burns, and see through his eyes how nothing truly is what it seems. The Pack is a great start to a promising new series.

Erotica

Erotica

Hot, Hexed and Bothered is a quick, light, cute read. I enjoy this author's take on the flipside of hell. I think the story was entertaining in that it‘s humorous and has a slight danger element to it, but there isn‘t really an erotica or romance for the main protagonist - and that disappointed me. (April 11, Noble Romance)

Sarah H

If you‘ve read Raziel by Kristina Douglas then you have to read the second in her The Fallen series, Demon. Demon is filled with action, betrayal, love, sex, excitement, and happiness – everything required for a good romance novel. But Demon is not just another good romance novel; it is in a league of its own. It is different yet familiar, and a great read for anyone who wants a paranormal fix. Sometimes it is hard to write a sequel that can match or top a first in a series but Demon does just that and more!

Boiling Point is a steamy, sexy, quick read. I like the premise for the story and Fauna‘s family of The chemistry between Fauna and Cooper is sizzlin‘, but I think she overreacts and almost costs herself a great man. The writing is easy to read and the story moves along very quickly. half-fairy brothers and sisters. (Jan 11, Resplendence)

Sarah H

"O serpent heart hid with a flowering face! Did ever a dragon keep so fair a cave? Beautiful tyrant, fiend angelical, dove feather raven, wolvish-ravening lamb! Despised substance of devinest show, just opposite to what thou justly seemest - A dammed saint, an honourable villian! -Juliet 3.2. VS 79" — William Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) The Villains….These are the characters that make or break a romantic suspense novel. They need to be focused, organized and lethal. To be truly believable they need should be more than just a ‘type’ or a poorly crafted plot point for the hero. While most of the true villains are men, some of the creepiest evil doers are woman (think Glenn Close’s character in ‘Fatal Attraction’ or Cathy Bates’ in ‘Misery’). My favorite villains run the gambit from a mild mannered manipulator to a brilliant sadistical bastard. While I don’t want to give away too much of any one story, suffice to say these books will keep you riveted to the story and seething at the menacing villains. But what is the villain’s role? Are they narrated or do they have some POV within the story? Personally, I prefer to have the villian as a critical plot point where their motivations and plans are only revealed in miniscule quantities. The less we know about them, the creepier or evil the villian appears. The best villian character descriptions are delivered to the hero via others, such as minions or informants. In Phantom of the Night, the underlings "Power changes everything till it is share with the reader the “initiation/training” they were given by difficult to say who are the heroes the villian. By calmly describing their training discipline, the reader and who the villains... And magic itself is neither good nor bad; it is was conveyed the true sadistic nature of the villian. intent that makes it either." But what are the villains’ thoughts and motivations? What — Libba Bray (The Sweet Far Thing) drives them? For many, the overwhelming factor is greed. Greed of money, power, position…you name it. The more the villian has to lose, such as a high ranking senator (Fatal series by Marie Force) or mafia king pin (Elite Ops by Lora Leigh), the greater lengths they will go to in order to procure their position. When the villian is neither good nor bad or is both good and bad…this is the perfect story for me. One perfect example would be Behind Closed Doors by Shannon McKenna. The villian is a mob man and occasionally a mad man, but he also has a much defined set of rules and ethics that he adheres to at all times. He loves his family and those who earn his trust have it unconditionally. Whether the villian chooses to use his/her evil genius for good or for bad, leads the story down unexpected paths…since the reader does not know when or why the villian chooses to help or hinder the hero. The beautiful villains or the handsome foes draw in the heroine "Villains often come with pretty and convince her that they are the good guy, while manipulating the faces." hero. One such example of the “heroic villian” would be in Trace of — the Luxe Fever. Murray Coburn is not only a corrupt businessman, but a ruthless flesh trader. While Priscilla tries to discover the truth about her family, she meets Murray’s henchman, Trace. The beautiful, well groomed and outwardly polite Murray appears to be a saint next to his rough, tight-lipped, and muscled bodyguard. But as Priscilla soon learns, looks can be very, very deceiving. And next month we meet the lovers…the foolish heroines who fall for the villains and the heroes! And in December: The Heroes!!! "We villains are a very select group indeed. In the very desperation of our hate rests our strength." — Cyclops

"Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villian, everybody." — Alan Moore (V for Vendetta)

Erotica

This anthology is packed full of action, lust and strong lead characters. Overall this anthology is a pleasure to read. I almost wish I read them in a different sequence and ended it on a high note. If I were you, I would leave Lucy Monroe‘s Who’s Been Sleeping in My Brother’s Bed? until the very end, you won‘t be disappointed!

Shannon McKenna is back! Blood and Fire is explosive The action is fast paced and the sex is explosive. There was a lot of stuff to deal with and if the resolution came in a neat package…then it would have been false. Nothing about the McClouds is neat and tidy. They and their friends are raw, rough and vulgar…just the way I like ‗em! Enjoy!

Wicked Lies is a fast-paced thrill ride with many random sharp turns along the way. As I'm sure that reading these in order is wonderful, having not read the first in this series is not distracting and doesn‘t take away from the understandability of this novel.

Courting Death is one of those rare books that combine great romances, and addicting suspense novels, into one breathtaking story. Courting Death is recommended for those who love an exciting suspense story with great twist mixed with romance that is more real than make believe.

SCARLET TEAR

Rachel Vincent TOP PICK- 5 Hoots

BJ Mcall 4 Hoots Erotica

Scarlet Tear is entertaining and fun. From the description, readers won‘t know that the novel takes place in another galaxy, in space, and on a space station, which is a nice surprise. Although the novel is short, the world-building is done well. McCall creates tension between Ceyla and Wytt that builds throughout, making the love scenes hot and steamy! (June 11, Ellora‘s Cave)

NECROPOLIS

Cindy

Michael Dempsey 5 Hoots This book is an edge-of-yourseat, can't put it down, thrill ride through urban fantasy at its best. Though there are a great many twists and turns throughout the course of this great read, the author does a great job of maintaining a cohesive storyline; relate-able characters, and interesting fully constructed worlds within worlds. This story will grab you in the beginning, take you on an emotional, psychological rollercoaster ride that you will beg to ride again and tell all your friends about. (Oct 11, Nightshade Books)

Visions of Magic is book one in a series called Awakening. The series itself will follow witches of one coven who have been reincarnated in hopes of preventing the destruction of the world. This book follows Shea as her powers This alternate universe is fascinating. The whole witch hunt, modern Salem Witch Trial take is interesting, but the relationship between the characters themselves was underdone in romance and overdone in sex. There are A LOT of detailed setups for future books, and I wouldn‘t mind seeing where this idea is going. awakening. (Feb 11, Signet Eclipse)

GODS AND MONSTERS Lyn Benedict 4 Hoots

Rachel Vincent‘s books contain strong, but unique, female characters, drool worthy men, romance to spice things up, and plots flushed out better than any novel I have ever read. Blood Bound will make readers truly care for and about the characters. Fans will be sucked in from page one and read every waking second until it is finished. Blood Bound does not have the "first book" syndrome readers are accustomed to. I hope everyone realizes what a spectacular book and author you are and have created! ! (Sep 11, Mira)

BLOODLANDS Christine Cody 4 Hoots Dystopia

This novel is a dystopian mixed with Wild West mixed, with vampire. The lines between good and bad characters and situations blur, the reader shouldn't make snap judgments. The events are evenly paced...some parts are faster than others. There will be a second in this series to look forward to as well. This book is recommended to those who reader dystopian novels, adults. (Aug 11, Ace)

Benedict weaves a story full of mystery, wonderfully developed characters and great humor (more sarcasm). The unexpected twist takes the reader to the brink, and leaves him wanting to know what happens next. The perfection of weaving events and characters from past books only add to the originality of the author. (April 11, Ace)

OMG! EVEN EROTICA HAS ABBREVIATIONS? By Kelly Lester Do you remember the first time you got onto the internet and you noticed a lot of internet “slang?” You probably learned words like “LOL” and you learned NOT TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS because that meant you were yelling. Unless of course, you wanted to yell. When texting came along, it wasn’t very hard to fall into the “OMG” world. It was easy to understand that <3 was a heart which of course means love. By now, most of us have a hard time NOT putting a ;) (smiley face) after most things we write. It took some getting used to, but we did it. We did not have to ask many people about LMAO meaning laughing one’s “assets” off, and once we did, we learned, and soon started making up our own abbreviation for things. (Come on, I know you did it too right?) So as we get more and more into the erotica reading world, there are probably some abbreviations and terms that you will want to know and hold close to your heart. Here we go! First, the generalities, and there are many of these. I am giving you but a sampling of terms… BTW By the way DNF Did not finish (as in the book sucked and I didn’t finish reading it – where was YOUR mind at?) GLBT Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Transexual HEA Happily Ever After (you see this a LOT in the reading world) NSFW or NWS Not Safe for Work or Not Work Safe (as in don’t view this photo anywhere near your boss!) BDSM – Is this anything like M&M’s? Plain or Peanut? BDSM

B/D D/S Top/Dominant Bottom/submisssive Animal-Play CBT St. Andrews Cross TPE

This term is generally used to mean a situation or practice which includes erotic power exchange, dominance and submission, pain play, bondage, sensation play or anything related to those. It is best defined by the individuals involved and if you use your imagination, M&M’s really could be involved! Bondage & Discipline (think someone taking away your M&M’s because you ate their Pay Day bar.) Dominance & submission (note the lower case “s”) The partner who is given control The partner who gives up control The sub acts or dresses like an animal (puppy, pony, kitty, etc.) Cock and ball torture (use your imagination) Bondage achieved by spreading the appendages and fastening them with chains Total Power Exchange relationship where the dominant or owner has complete authority and influence over the submissive’s life, making the majority of decisions. The dominant partner gets complete power at all times

Okay, I am going to take you now into the wild side. Be prepared. This may be NSFW even! (Are you learning? AYL?) Anilingus Any sexual activity involving licking, kissing or tonguing another person’s anus Brothercest Menage where brothers have sex with each other as well as a third party Bukake To ejaculate on a woman’s face CD Cross dressing – the act of one dressing up as the gender that they do not normally find themselves living as. Cock Stuffing Involves using thin, cylindrical items (thermometers, wire, rubber worms, etc), and inserting them into the penish hole. Over many months, continue to gradually ream out the hole with larger items thus ultimately allowing your partner to obtain the goal of having sex with your urethra. ::blinking:: I am only reporting this stuff. DP Double Penetration – penis or phallus in both vagina and anus Forced Seduction When a heroine, who loses virginity by force, a heroine who initially dislikes and actively resists the hero’s seduction, only ultimately to be overcome by desire. (This happens a lot in historical romances for some reason.) Non-con Non-consensual sex or rape Price Albert Male piercing done through the urethra and exiting slightly behind the glans penis on the underside of the penis. Special ‘PA” jewelry or a curved barbll can also be used. This piercing is used to increase sexual pleasure for both the wearer and his partner. Rimming Licking the anus Taint On a man, the area between sack & crack and on a woman the area between the “giney” and heinie. (Humor is intentional at this point because you have to laugh right?) Twincest Ménage where twins have sex with each other as well as a third party. W/S Watersports aka golden showers or being urinated on. TS Transgender – this is a broad term that includes transsexual (pre/non or post-op) non-gender, bi (tri & multi) gender, adrogynes, etc. There is a huge, giant, ENORMOUS world out there of terminology, and I am only just skimming the top. I think that these are the terms that come up most often. These are terms that a casual reader may run into in their exploration of the internet and erotica books. I do hope this article has enlightened you some, or maybe it just raised a few eyebrows. Whichever the case, I hope you are now prepared to jump in feet first and with glasses on!

Slayter and Teyla steam up the pages of this novella over and over again. Despite that there is a wonderful story line present. Tyler has showed off some mad skills writing Pirate’s Woman.

I was hooked in the first few pages; thinking my, my, what a way to start. A little game of cat and mouse or should I say elf and wearling Did this book leave me satisfied in the end? No, even though I enjoyed the story, I felt disconnected with it and thus it fell a little short.

INTIMATE FRIENDS Claire Matthews 3 Hoots

I will never discount the waltz again; Lord Lockhart can teach me to dance anytime he wants. This short read left me wanting more of everything. Blackthorne has a knack for setting the scene and bringing out true human nature no matter what the period. Hot, wickedly sexy, and a whole lot of spice in the bedroom; with very explicit and detailed scenes that left me completely satisfied and signing up for couples waltz lessons! (May 11, Ellora‘s Cave)

Intimate Friends is a sweet, sexy, smokin‘ hot story. Emma had been burned by a man, and she really let it affect her future . Noah (oh-ah) fell in love with Emma a long time ago . They have such a great friendship and I could really feel the love and caring between the two of them, not to mention, the sexual chemistry being off the hook. My beef was with the ending – its way too abrupt – I really wanted it to go on longer. The writing is great and easy to read, I look forward to more from Claire Matthews. (July 11, Evernight)

What a Goddess Wants is a wicked, sexy, action packed adventure. The sensual scenes are written wonderfully and might make you need to fan yourself. The writing is fluid, fast paced and easily read. The action/danger element to the story works very well and keeps you on your toes. What a Goddess Wants is a great read for the erotic paranormal romance buff – I can‘t wait for the next installment!

Blood Knot is action packed, steamy and full of devious schemes. I did really enjoy the bits of guy on guy action as well as the rest of the sensual scenes. This story has a great mix of romance, danger and mystery all tossed in with some equally great paranormal elements.

Dark Venues is a short read at 54 pages, but it doesn‘t need to be any longer. Even though I found the emotional connection between the characters lacking depth, it‘s not hard to imagine why they would want each other. This is the first book I have read by Mardi Ballou, although I wouldn‘t mind trying another one of her books, this one isn‘t going on my reread list.

FIELD OF PLAY Frances Stockton 3 Hoots Frances Stockton has written an erotica novel with several strong themes: a love akin to Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet; vindictive ex-lovers; the intense feelings of a child abandoned; a bullied child who can‘t let go of the past; and, a family conflict like the Hatfield‘s and McCoy‘s. This is truly erotica, with a definitely interesting theme of loving, and sensual bondage, dominant, and submissive. If the extended sexual scenes were more integrated into the wonderful plot themes, the novel would be the richer for the reading. (Feb 11, Ellora‘s Cave)

Therése von Willegen 4 Hoots This story is about a couple of characters trying to figure out life. The writing style is good; the story is engaging and hard to put down. There are not a lot of sex scenes, but during those few times terms like ―seek entry to her swollen passage‖ didn‘t fit with the dialog or mood and sounded juvenile, and the orgasmic timeline is too rushed so it isn‘t believable. Overall, a good story I wouldn‘t be afraid to read again. (Sept 11, Lyrical)

MAD ABOUT MADDIE Sherri Thomas 3 Hoots

Meredith Scott 5 Hoots Invisible Path is the ninth in the Tempe Crabtree series. Each scene propels not only the overall plot and subplots, but entices the reader to consider these racial, cultural and social ills. Intertwined in these themes lies the basic mystery genre – whodunit? Meredith is not only an excellent novelist; she is well versed in the creation of actionpacked plotlines, description, and character development.

WINNING HEART Laura Browning 5 Hoots Winning Heart is definitely a story that‘ll capture your heart. I absolutely love this story. Laura Browning has a special way with words that pulls you in and makes you care deeply for her characters. The major danger element is devastating and definitely not for the faint of heart. My only difficulty with the story is that Nelson starts having these feeling not even a year after his wife and child are killed (the time of grief isn‘t realistic to me), and that Wynter is eighteen years old. The story is written well, flows swiftly and is phenomenal. (July 11, Lyrical)

Sarah H

Mad About Maddie is a sweet, rocky, love story. I feel the love scenes are a bit clinical. I also abhor phrases like dark core, wet tunnel and so on. I also want to see some kind of danger element to the story – which I thought there might be at the mention of the ex-boyfriend back in town. All this aside, the love story is sweet. Both characters grew personally and overcame their issues to move forward in life. (July 11, Liquid Silver)

FEEL THE HEAT Mellor, O’Claire, and Parks, 4 Hoots Feel the Heat is an anthology of three scorching tales of women embracing their own pleasure and pursuing their desires. Fight Fire with Fire by Lorie O'Clare is a charming tale of the girl next-door finally getting her man. I found the story to be the classic tale of past unrequited love fulfilled. Heat Wave by P.J. Mellor sticks to the overall tone of the anthology collection and thrusts our heroine, Heat Wave also contains a bit of comic relief. Smoldering Lust by Lydia Parks is hot, hot, and extremely hot. I just love the entire concept of longtime friends finding that each harbors unrequited desire and love for each other.

Three Reasons Why is a sizzling, steamy read chocked full of passion, and wicked hot lovin‘. The emotional and sexual chemistry between the two characters is scorching and guaranteed to make you fan yourself. I sure wish I had a handyman like Wes, of course; nothing would ever get done because I‘d never leave him alone. Three Reasons Why is easy to read, fast, and well worth it.

The Seduction Game is a sexy, romantic, easy read. Adam and Kate have great chemistry, right off the bat. Adam‘s a playboy and not really ready to settle down, but not satisfied with his philandering. Kate is weary of starting anything new with someone due to a very bad experience. The story is also written well – easy to read and fast paced. I think this short read is a great way to spend an evening or afternoon.

The Book and the Legend By: Krystal Larson It's always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall. Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests. Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess. (Goodreads) The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter is a fresh look on the myth concerning Persephone and Hades. Kate, as the main character, acts as a goddess similar to Persephone. Readers who get a chance to pick up the book will find that Aimee Carter really did come up with a new idea. Kate isn’t actually Persephone…that’s her sister. However, the same rules of Hades that applied to Persephone apply to Kate. Once Kate agrees to be Henry’s aka Hades’ consort, she must return to him for six months of the year; the other six months she is free to do as she pleases. Another subtle change to the myth concerns Persephone and Kate’s mother. It turns out that she is actually rooting for Kate and Henry to fall in love…she had desired the same for her first daughter, Persephone, but Persephone’s and Henry’s relationship did not go as planned. Kate’s and Henry’s relationship must succeed, however, or Henry suffers an untimely fate-this is also a plot point in the book where Carter works in another slight difference. Kate does not get her prince charming that easily, she must work through several tasks first. These tasks are inventive and deceptive…as the reader later learns. There is also a traitor thrown into the already intriguing mix, that traitor will try to prevent Kate from winning Henry. Similarities to the myth in the book include the rocky start to Henry’s and Kate’s relationship. Henry is enigmatic and charismatic while Kate is inquisitive and bold. They clash multiple times in the story, much to the readers’ delight and chagrin depending on the outcome. Persephone’s and Kate’s mother is a kind and gentle goddess. Hades and Persephone Carter works in all of the major gods and goddesses at different points in the book as secondary characters as well.

The descriptions in this novel are rich, providing intricate details of the various settings. While such descriptions help the reader to visualize this different world, there are some long passages that interrupt the pacing of the book. Numerous characters, who are not essential to plot or story development, force the reader to backtrack for who they are. The subject of Woon‘s book is engaging and interesting. I loved Shiver, longed for more in Linger, and I‘m disappointed with Forever. When you come to the end of a great series, you automatically have high expectations. Those high expectations are sadly shattered with the ending. The pages are piled with action, need, desire and resolve, but not everything is resolved. This is what we call an impasse. Forever is a must read, if only to know how the character‘s journey ends. Two people who truly belong together… Forever.

Jennifer Castle brings to life the grief that consumes a young girl, and how each person deals with grief differently. The only fault is that Laurel shows a lack of grief, and when her grief is expressed, it is not as impressive as what the situation would call for. Yet, The Beginning of After is a beautiful story of how one can begin to live again after the loss of loved ones. This is the debut novel of Jennifer Castle, and it is a great read. Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover! Have you ever been walking through a bookstore looking for your next purchase and see this absolutely fabulous cover waiting to be snatched up? Your excitement peaked all the way home, you get comfy and settle in for what looks to be an unbelievable read. As you sit there getting into the story, developing the characters in your mind to fit the written words; you then say wait a minute? You close the book and look at the cover and all impressions of that beautiful fantasy shattered in one fell swoop. Those characters look nothing like they they’ve been portrayed on the front. I think we all know this one well! Twilight is a very well known series that most have you have read and watched for that matter. So let’s study Jacob Black for a minute shall we. Now you already have an idea in your head at what he looks like from the first book and then in the second we have his transformation. Now after reading the second, I expect Jacob to be what was the size? Oh yes that’s it 6’7” tall and growing. Should he tower over Bella? Yes he should and yet they cast Taylor Lautner in the movie that is a scarce 5’ 8” tall. To top it off they put him on the cover of the second book! Now i'm not bashing the work Taylor did in the movies as Jacob; in fact I think he played his role very well. But as a devoted reader, can you see how this look would distress me! While we are on TV, let’s take a look at the Vampire Diaries for a minute. What color is Elena’s hair? For those of you who have read the book first will come up with the right answer! Elena is a blonde without question and throughout the books Smith comments on her appearance. Yet we sit down to watch the TV series and get a definite brunette. To bring my point home even further I went to the bookstore to see which is the most popular version that is being sold of these books to TV sensations. It looks to be that the Twilight series leans away from the movie sensation and produces the apple, flower, ribbon and chess piece version (for which I’m thankful) and the Vampire Diaries leans towards the TV series capturing Elena, Stefan and Damien as their TV selves other than what the books describe. This little venture to the bookstore tells me one thing! Read the Twilight series and watch Vampire Diaries series on TV to avoid disappointment! Let’s go the other way for a minute, have there been books that you’ve passed by multiple times because the cover you have passed is quite cheesy! I have, one particular series for me is the famous Sookie Stackhouse novels! It took my book reading friends on Goodreads a year to convince me to pick up this series. Actually it was more like begging me to buy these ones! When I go into the bookstore and pass these books I see this. Now, when I want to read a good vampire novel I don’t like to see cheesy on the front cover; blood, lust, and sex appeal come to mind when fantasizing of the undead. For me the jury is still out

on this series; after reading the series and watching the show the covers are a good representation of the story and I will leave this one up to your interpretations. One thing as a reader I would like to see is that the writers have a final say in their covers. These people know their characters the best; right? I mean they developed every little detail of the character and wrote in most cases very vivid descriptions. As you know I write review for NRR and in doing so I peruse the other reviewer’s favourites to add to my reading collection. I had to do a double take a few times and then sat back and went huh? Take a look and tell me what you see in these covers! Do you see a common factor in these covers? Well there are three that jump out at me when I look at them. One, we see the same publishing house for every book! Two, the most obvious on first glance; that male is the same on every cover! Three, all of them have been written by different authors so they can’t be a series! What does this tell you? Well for me it sends home a huge message. Either all these authors get together and write same lead in their books, or that the publishing company hasn’t even read the book before deciding what should be on the cover of these books. You can’t tell me that each of these authors have the same male in mind when they wrote out there story. Now mind you, this publishing house picks up erotica novels and this male on the cover has sex appeal; but there have to be more men out there to pick from that fit the tall, dark and handsome stereotype these authors may have written about. To the publishing houses out there; please give in to our wanton desires and expand the hunk pool base so we can have a bit of variety and let the authors have the final say! To close there are authors out there that have worked long and hard with their publishing companies to give us the readers a comprehensive package and to those I am grateful. For a full meal deal, covers that leave you thinking yes they could look exactly like that and that complement the story to a tee; all are true must reads if you haven’t already! Good looking covers lead to enticing reads, for the most part! Enjoy!

ARE YOU A TRUE BELIEVER? by: Tiffany Moorman Psychic Vampires. I believe we all have heard of them, but how many of us actually believe they exist? No, I am not talking about Dracula or Nosferatu, nor the creatures that go bump in the night, and certainly not the ones that sparkle in the daylight. I am talking regular people whom appear to be just as normal as your next door neighbor, or the little old lady that lives just down the street that’s always rather chipper and always willing to lend a helping hand. You know the one, the little Grandma Jane that all the kids know and love, including you when you were a kid. Hmm, wait; just how long has Grandma Jane been around? A psychic vampire is a person who feeds off of other people’s emotions, also known as an emo vampire (no, I am not talking about vampires who go moping around with their heart bleeding on their theoretical sleeve). While it may not make them immortal per se, it has been studied that it may elongate his/her life. Their victims can very well survive such an attack, and more often than not, not even know an attack has even taken place. They may feel a bit drained afterwards, but that can always be explained as nothing more than fatigue. Let us sit down and think about it, shall we? Have you ever had a heated argument with a complete stranger, a co-worker or even a friend to the point where you feel completely exhausted afterwards? Even more tired than if you had an actual physical confrontation? Did it feel as though that person was egging you on to continue the fight? No? Well, was someone else there instigating the entire situation, pitting you and your opponent against one another, secretly gloating inside while he/she fed off of the anger from you both. Next time you have an altercation with someone, stop and examine how you feel afterwards. If you were so tired you felt as though you would collapse if didn’t either sit or lie down, you may have just been attacked and not just emotionally drained as some would say. Some attacks are not so outlandish, and the attacks could come when you’d least expect it. Like people who make you so utterly happy just by being around them, maybe too happy, or maybe a lover, one after making love you feel as though you are going to collapse. You have no strength whatsoever after just one session, yet they’re ready to go for several more rounds. Ever heard of a succubus/incubus? Are you just spent from so much bliss, or have you just been their latest victim? A very good friend of mine had an interview in which afterwards she was left feeling drained and extremely tired. I asked her how was she feeling before she went into the interview, she said that she was extremely nervous and at the same time excited. Nervousness and excitement are also emotions, so you tell me, had she been a victim of a psychic attack, or was it just had a wave of fatigue? There are several books out now that not only instruct you on how to protect yourself from such attacks, but also how to become a Psychic Vampire yourself. But keep in mind, if you do go about becoming such, you will NOT become immortal. Though they say you may be able to elongate your life by a few years, maybe to reach over the ripe age of over 111 years of age. Immortality is not something that can be accomplished. Such books are:

Psychic Vampires: Protection From Energy Predators & Parasites by Joe H. Slate, Michael Maupin, Energy Vampires: A Practical Guide for Psychic Selfprotection by Dorothy Harbour, The Psychic Vampires Guide: To Subtle Body Language and Psionics by Lono Fructus Vespertilio and many more will teach you how to become one, and how to elude one. Many fictional books portray Psychic Vampires as well: Anita Blake Series by Laurell K Hamilton and Riley Jenson Guardian series by Kerri Arthur. So next time you have an encounter with someone that leaves you feeling “fatigued”, ask yourself are you truly tired, or have you actually been attacked by a true Vampire.

The role of 9/11 in Literature By: Charity Daugherty As last month, September 2011, marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11. In commemoration of those tragic events that affected everyone in the country in some way, I think we should take a look into the literature. While the events were unfolding on September 11th and the days and months that followed writers were realizing the widespread impact the tragedy was having. Some writers were emotionally compelled to write about the events of that day, and timing was important to both capture the immediate emotion and to understand our changing world. Some writers may not have consciously written about 9/11, but they most likely allowed their emotions or experiences flow into their work in some way. Others will have avoided the subject at all costs. Within the last 10 years there have been several works of Fiction centered around the 9/11 tragedies. I have compiled a list of titles (in no particular order) deemed “readable” by different groups people on Goodreads and through reviews. The reviews on all of these titles are mixed. There is no stand-out (Fiction) novel. So why is that? Many think it is just too soon. Because 9/11 was a day in the life of the world, our generation, as opposed to many years, personal memories are still very strong. It is hard to convey an event that many people still remember so clearly. September 11, 2001 will continue to be a marking point for writers in all genres. It will play a similar role as the Second World War—writers use the war as a setting for as many stories in all types of genres and styles. It is a setting that even debut novelists, and those too young to have any personal memory of, continue to tread. Should Writers use 9/11 in their stories? Absolutely. These post-9/11 stories are necessary for the documentation of our history and a glimpse into our society. These stories and novels, at least the good ones, will have their day, if not in this generation, then definitely the next. Looking at how past events have shaped Literature we can have a glimpse of the future. It has only been 10 years, and really that hasn’t been very long. As more time passes we will be able to take a step back from the emotional connection of 9/11 and embrace stories and writing that portray that part of our history. For example Joseph Heller published Catch-22 in 1961 and Kurt Vonnegut published Slaughterhouse-Five in 1969. Both of their books are set within World War II, and they are being deemed “modern classics.” So what is there secret to success (besides having awesome writers)- its time. Both of these books were published more than 20 years after WWII ended. Time had healed some wounds both physically and emotionally. People were open to the idea of reading a book with the setting of a time that had such an impact. As years pass we will see more and more books with a 9/11 setting. One of those new books, or a book already published, will probably stand out among the rest. We, as a nation still in mourning, are not completely open or ready to say “that’s the book that will stand the test of time for this tragedy” but it will happen, just like all the other tragedies in our countries history. Books impacted by 9/11 Joseph O’Neill’s, Netherland Claire Messud’s, The Emperor’s Children Ian McEwan’s, Saturday John Updike, Terrorist Martin Amis, The Second Plane Don DeLillo, Falling Man Jay McInerney, The Good Life Benjamin Kunkel, Indecision Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Frederic Beigbeder, Windows on the World

The magic of audio-books opens an entirely new world in the concept of reading. One thing that I really enjoy about audio-books is the concept of being able to read on the go. Many times I find that I do not have time to sit down and enjoy a juicy paranormal or a thrilling suspense. But through the use of audio-books and some really fantastic IOS 5 and Android apps I am able to listen anytime and anywhere. Once upon a time audio-books were almost as obscured as eBooks, but as technology has evolved the acceptance of change has extended to the spoken word. The following sites offer a host of some of the most popular titles from some of the industry’s top authors. The list includes a number of buy direct from the publishers and internet retail resellers:                       

Amazon.com Audible.com Audio Book Mart Audio Editions Barnes and Noble Blackstone Audio Books In Motion Books-A-Million Booksfree.com BooksonBoard.com Borders.com Elloras Cave eMusic.com HighBridge Audio Librarybin.com LibriVox Free Audiobooks Naxos AudioBooks Powell's Bookstore Ravenous Romance Silver Publishing Simply Audiobooks SpringBrook Audio Tor

In addition to internet sites, most public libraries also offer downloadable audio-books that may be played on either an IOS 5 or Android based devices. Aiding in experiencing the true excitement of audio-book on the go are the free audible.com and the overdirve.com apps available for both the IOS 5 and Android devices. While each app features many of the standard audio playback controls; stop, play advance, the audible.com app allows for on the go (wi-fi/3G connection required) downloads of previously purchased audio-books as well as the ability to purchase audio-books on the fly. The Overdirve.com is a great starter app for downloading MP3 audio-books from the library system. Most cities offer an internet site powered by overdrive and only require a user to hold a library card for that particular library system. Besides for the benefit of being able to read on the go, audio-books also offer the unique advantage of experiencing amazing audio characterization. Some of the best narrators are those that are able to infuse each character with his /her own personalities, adding just the right inflection, tone and depth to the dialog. It’s these skills that make the characters come alive for the listener. Recently the BPL.org has started adding some exceptional paranormal audio-books from Tantor Media and Brilliance Audio which has allowed me to experience some new and exciting authors. Why not try a library audio-book today?
