A NEWSLETTER ABOUT ARTISTS AND THEIR TOOLS No. 1 Eric edvalson
Artist interviewed: Eric Edvalson “Untitled (from the series Matter Reshaper)”, 2017
What is your most important artist tool? A notebook. I am not an avid sketcher necessarily, but I find the best thing I can do is when a new idea pops into my mind is to write it down somewhere so I won’t forget. I mostly use the notes app on my phone for the purpose, but I actually like writing things down in a Muji passport size notebook when I have it with me.
How has your practice evolved overtime? I mostly work in sculpture and photography, but I will use just about anything that suits my idea, so I mostly can’t explain how I am drawn to a specific medium. I will say, that between sculpture and photography, in the last few years I have been really interested in the relationship between the two: in what ways is photography sculptural, and in what ways is my sculpture work influenced by my approach to photography?
Editors note: Like many of us, Eric Edvalson uses a notebook to keep his thoughts. As artists, a notebook or sketchbook is a necessity. Various artists use notebooks and paper as their primary art medium; this can be sculptural or 2-dimensional. I use my sketchbook as an exploration tool. It holds studies, drawings, models, notes, etc. A notebook can take the form of whatever you want it to be.
