Crossways, Internorm‘s [1st] Grand DesigN Richard Hawkes’ immaculate design of an energy friendly house (Crossways) is one of UK’s first code level 5 houses. The unique design’s main concept was to reduce the overall eco-footprint and has achieved this exceptionally well, incorporating Internorm windows. The technique uses thin bricks to create a lightweight, durable building and combines a modern vision by applying Internorm windows from the Edition, Varion and Varion4 ranges. The magnificent building demonstrates how contemporary design can integrate innovative technologies to produce a highly sustainable building.

BALCONY AND SIDE ENTRANCE DOORS

The advantage of sliding doors is that the weight does not lie on one side, but is distributed on the top and the bottom. Therefore sliding doors are especially suitable for large patios. They do not require space in the passage direction. Depending on what you require, you can choose between lift-and-slide, tilt-and-slide or fold-and-slide doors – you will always find the right solution for your room. SECURITY

The BBA (British Board of Agrément) is the UK’s major body for new construction products and installers. The BBA Agrément Certificates are recognised by specifiers and other industry decisionmakers as proof that the products covered by them have been rigorously and impartially assessed. The certificate shows that compliance with Building Regulations has been achieved and will last for a defined period. The BBA has evaluated more than 60 different window and door systems. All the BBA tests are carried out in accordance with EN45001 and several are accredited under the UKAS scheme. Tests include the following procedures: durability, air permeability, water tightness, wind resistance, endurance on door & window hardware, thermal insulation and enhanced resistance to intrusion. Many companies advertise their windows and doors as BBA accredited, but it is only the profile that has the accreditation not their manufacturing process. Here at Internorm we are striving to have both our window profile and our manufacturing process accredited by the BBA. BBA certification on its own does not guarantee security or consistency of standards. The tests are onerous but to certain of a high quality, durable window you should also look for an ISO registered company (this proves their ability to provide windows to a consistent standard, and that they continuously strive to improve their processes). The endurance testing ensures the whole window will open and close at least 20,000 times.

To put it bluntly: if other measures, such as improved insulation of walls and roofs, etc. were included in the calculation, the Kyoto target of 20 % CO2 reduction could be achieved with energy conservation on buildings alone. The highly thermally insulating properties of triple glazed In-

intensity and duration – affect the human body negatively. THERMAL INSULATION As a building can lose approx. 25 to 30 % of its energy through the windows, the thermal insulation of the windows is especially important. Energy transfer through the windows is not only heat loss – due to the transparency of the glass, an energy gain is also achieved. If correctly planned with well laid out window surfaces (i.e. large window surfaces towards the south), the energy balance of the building can be influenced considerably. A window‘s thermal insulation depends on the frame material, the insulating glass and the impermeability of the window. The parameter for the insulating capability of the window

Noise is perceived through changes of air pressure, which are received through the human ear and passed on to the brain. Sound insulation (soundproofing) of a window is measured in decibel. The higher the value, the better the

sound insulation. Sound insulation states how much sound energy from the original sound energy is allowed to pass through. At an insulation of 10 dB 1/10 of the original sound energy passes through, at 20 dB 1/100, at 30 dB 1/1000 etc. Humans perceive a reduction of 10 dB as halving the

WinterlY thermal protection The aim is to reduce the energy loss through the transparent building components – windows and facades – during the heating period to an economically feasible amount and in due course to reduce emission of CO2 through heating. The parameter of the heat transmission coefficient UW is stated in W/m2K (Watt per square metre kelvin), which is either mathematically calculated according to EN ISO 10077 or

internorm expert ADVICE Internorm‘s multi-patented system technology has achieved to transfer the heat composite system of structural components/insulation/optical weather-resistant outer design, which has proven successful for decades, to windows. The unique advantages of thermal foam and aluminium can be used at their best: FKW-free thermal foam for highly thermally environment-friendly insulation and aluminium for unlimited, weather-resistant designer possibilities. Internorm is the only window manufacturer in Europe with nine passive house certified components and also became the European market leader in the low energy and passive house segment with this highly thermally insulating product range. When the overall concept of a passive house has been perfectly planned, it is also possible to use highly thermally insulating, but not passive house certified components, to build lowest energy and passive houses.

What is important for passive houses One of the major characteristics is the active utilisation of existing energy – minimising thermal losses and at the same time optimising thermal gain, these are the basic principles. But merely combining passive house certified components is not enough to reach a passive house construction standard: The whole thing is more than the sum of its parts – mutual interactions between the distinct components necessitate integral planning to fulfil three basic demands: [ ] Heating demand < 15 kWh/(m2a) [ ] Primary energy demand (heating, warm water, house appliances) < 120 kWh/(m2a) [ ] Pressure difference air exchange n50 < 0.6 h-1, i.e. at a pressure difference of 50 Pascal the air flow must be less than 60 % the building’s volume per hour.

internorm expert advice

internorm expert advice

The extraordinary thermal insulation clearly is the focal point in passive house construction. The enormous energy savings of up to 90 % not only please the inhabitants, but also represent an active and essential contribution to climate protection, due to the reduced CO2 emission. Nevertheless, a highly insulating window should still be able to fulfil all the basic functions of a modern window construction: It is important to be able to offer all window sizes and opening types, but also bespoke special constructions, such as round or angular elements. Further functions, such as burglary protection, shading, insect protection and visual design possibilities should not be treated as unimportant for highly thermally insulating window systems.

A human needs 15 to 20 m3 of air per hour. In order to achieve better air quality in passive houses, in the colder months energy consuming airing can be avoided. This is why the passive house is different from conventional buildings.

64/65

This technology necessitates careful planning and exact construction, but it results in a higher living standard and supports CO2 savings considerably. For the sake of our environment, but also for the sake of our own well-being, we should construct more and more houses in passive house technology!

SIDE ENTRANCE DOORS

Finger scanner

ALUMINIUM SIDE ENTRANCE DOORS Side entrance doors serve as closure from not occupied (unheated) rooms to the outside climate. They are used for less important rooms for which no special requirements exist (e.g. garage, cellar/storage rooms etc.). Current statistics show that burglars mostly use side entrance doors to gain access to the house. Therefore it is vital to take adequate security features into consideration. As closure to occupied rooms (heated rooms) house entrance doors should be used due to climatic conditions.

Does this sound familiar? Forgot the key and now you‘re locked out? The solution is the door of the future – with finger scanner! Sophisticated technology from biometrics market leader ekey and Internorm‘s well-proven quality join in elegant design. The integrated finger scanner replaces the conventional key in a convenient way without competition. The control unit is space-saving and securely situated in the door sash. Keys, cards or codes can no longer be forgotten, lost or stolen.
