I

t was a hot and humid Saturday in June at the Central Texas Harley Davidson Bike Fest! As I meandered my way through the crowds and vendors, I kept seeing “Waldo”! Little did I know that “Waldo” was the man to see about signing up www.southernsteelmagazine.com

The NCOC chose the 1st Anniversary of Waco to announce a national protest

for a “key” to win the 2016 Iron motorcycle being given away that day. No wonder he was so popular! Mouthwatering barbeque was being served by the Texas Firewalkers, a non-profit group that helps folks who have been through the tragedy of a fire. I bought a plate of food

and sat down to hear the fine music of Steel Penny. Shortly afterwards, Pee Wee got on stage to begin the key drawing for the give away bike. He had the full attention of the crowd! After giving a few more keys away, they began the task of “who’s key fits the lock” of the box that help the Iron’s master

key. Several contestants came and went, then one guy takes his key, kisses it and holds it up to the sky to bless it…lo and behold, we have a winner! He got his key and performed his first burnout for the crowd! Festivities continued and all in all, I would say it was a great day! July/August • 2016

The NCOC chose the 1st Anniversary of Waco to announce a national protest

take place at the ROT Rally in Austin, June 9-12. Representatives from motorcycle clubs across the country met in Austin to present a unified voice in defense of the community. Motorcycle profiling is a national epidemic impacting motorcyclists coast to coast. There is a well-established pattern of evidence proving law enforcement consistently targets individuals for no other reason than their appearance or membership in a motorcycle club. These clubs are a microcosm of America, comprised of rid-

ers from all walks of life. In attendance were Christian clubs, Military Veterans clubs, Clean and Sober clubs, Child Abuse Assistance Clubs, 1% clubs, and riding clubs reflective of the rich culture and history of our country and the multitude of personal interests available to us all. Significantly, representatives of many national organizations vilified by law enforcement and the media were represented and standing together projecting a unified voice and agreement on the issue of discrimination and profiling. This press conference was also tangible proof that clubs that allegedly do not associate with each other can peacefully come together and unify around common ground issues that impact the entire community. Double D explained, “To be clear, the National Council of Clubs does not speak for any one club or on behalf of any one club. The NCOC represents the collective voice of the community united around the idea that membership in mo-

torcycle clubs and expression of that membership should be fundamentally protected by the 1st Amendment and not used as a profiling factor.” Speakers presenting at the press conference were David “Double D” Devereaux (NCOC Spokesperson), Brent Coon (NCOC legal advisor and Waco Civil defense), Susan Criss (former Texas District Court judge and Waco criminal defense), Dr. Will Dulaney (Ph.D. International Security and qualified expert witness), Frank McIlhaney (Shield of Faith Ministries and Waco AID) and Wade Eldridge (Colorado COC and NCOC attorney). The NCOC chose the 1st Anniversary of Waco to announce a national protest. “The suffering of innocents at the hands of law enforcement and the criminal justice system in Waco is an outrageous example of the motorcycle profiling epidemic. The 1st anniversary of this tragedy is an appropriate time to bring attention to the civil rights deprivations occurring in Waco and the rest of the country.” www.southernsteelmagazine.com

y first ride as a newcomer to Texas was on FM 1431 between Round Rock and Marble Falls. I immediately fell in love with the dips and turns and changing skyline! Some of the curves are slightly offcamber, so pay attention to your line and speed. A right onto US 281 in Marble Falls, then a left onto Park Road 4 (just after crossing Honey Creek) will lead to Longhorn Caverns State Park. A hideout of the Sam Bass Gang, and a Civilian Conservation Corps project, the caverns were opened to the public in the 1930s. On the right, further down the road is a beautiful view of Falkenstein Castle (available for weddings), a one quarter scale rendition utilizing plans of a German castle. The picnic area mentioned at that point is reputed to be the BEST place to watch www.southernsteelmagazine.com

Jim’s Dam Pub at the foot of Buchanan Lake and Dam. Their burger and fries are extraordinary! Ride On & Smile! July/August • 2016 11

PERHAPS HEAVEN

The Story of a Warriors Life and His Journey to Immortality

Story & photos by: Mama S, Guest Writer from Louisiana Biker Magazine, Urania, LA

W

ar is Hell, or Perhaps Heaven, depending on the nature of the Warrior. This concept was the genesis of the novel.”, the author states, leaning against his old school ride, true to form down to the up swept fish tail exhaust and the 16” apes. Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with critically acclaimed novelist, Club founder and President, Saint Barnett. Now, some of you are wondering why in the blue hell you’re reading about some damn book in a biker rag, right?? I know I would be, had I not read it first. Barnett is, first and foremost, a hard core, old school Louisiana Biker, who’s ridden as both an Independent and MC all of his adult life. In his younger years, he earned numerous Black Belts and Instructor Certifications in multiple Martial Arts systems, which came in handy, not only for the book, but for his 20+ years as a bouncer. www.southernsteelmagazine.com

A few years ago, Barnett decided to sit down to try writing the demons out of his head, and Perhaps Heaven was born. In the middle of writing he took some time out to found The Band Motorcycle Club, finally perfecting and publishing the book in 2005.

The novel is available now on Amazon and several other online book sites, under the pen name John David Saxxon

Most of the book is loosely based on experiences in Barnett’s past. According to him, the “Warrior aspect was mostly from conversations with my Son as he was developing into the Elite Army Ranger he is today.” As we were talking, I was mesmerized by the passion for his project coming from this big burly tattooed beast of a man standing before me. “As I began to delve into this over and over, again and again, the dynamics of the eternal warrior started to emerge and develop almost into obsession, the theme of the eternal Warrior naturally led to the age old struggle of Good vs. Evil.” “Early on, we see the main character, John David Saxxon, as a remorseless

killing machine, but there is so much more to the man, his trials and challenges. I felt taking John David back to his teenage years would reveal his true essence and strength of will that defines his vulnerability as an outcast in the small town where he was raised.” Perhaps Heaven is a tale of love, hate, family, passion, and revenge with some kick ass fight scenes thrown in. The novel is available now on Amazon and several other online book sites, under the pen name John David Saxxon. The second book in the trilogy, Perhaps Heaven: Aftermath will be available in early 2017. If you see Saint Barnett out or at a rally, he’d be more than happy to sign your copy.

A FAREWELL TO REMEMBER Story & photos by: Mama S, Guest Writer from Louisiana Biker Magazine, Urania, LA

ednesday April 20, 2016 hundreds gathered in West (by God) Monroe to bid farewell to a Louisiana icon, Jimmy “Squirrel” Langston. Squirrel was a former Army National Guardsmen, discharged in 1972. Before leaving for the Service, he was all about hot rods and racing. By the time he came home, his passion had turned to motorcycles. He quickly became a beloved asset to the motorcycle community and stayed that way, even after his passing; from his 30+ years with the Satan’s Tramps, most of those as president of the Monroe chapter, to opening and running Squirrel&Sherry’s Cycle Shop. “He was tight with his money, we all knew that, but he was so giving with his heart and his time”, especially when it was for the kids. The MDA Poker Run was his baby and through that he raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for them. He was also a recipient of the Ladies Humanitarian Am Vets Award and was honored in Washington, D.C. The only thing he was more passionate about was his beautiful wife Sherry,

whom was always by his side. “I mean who else would name their bike shop after their wife?” Pulling up to the church, watching the dark clouds steadily roll in, it was almost definite everyone was going to get soaked! Even with the weather looming as it was, walking into the church, it was obvious the depth of love and respect this man held. There were hundreds of folks in attendance, from independents, some of the largest and smallest clubs in the state, to regular civilians and politicians. During the service, stories full of admiration, respect,

and laughter were shared by many. “Now Squirrel was never a fan of saying “Goodbye” {on the telephone}, He’d say what he had to say and you got a “Later”...click! His accomplishments and heart through his life were rivaled by very few. “Not many people can say they’re known by only one name; you’ve got Cher, Madonna, Bono, and Squirrel.” This statement brought peals of laughter through the church and through the tears. Squirrel was even a semi-famous TV star. He appeared on the show, Duck Dynasty, and also starred in a few commercials for Griffin Funeral Homes featuring the Motorcycle Hearse he designed for them. After the service, as everyone was gathered outside waiting for the diverse group of pallbearers to get Squirrel mounted up for his last ride with Sherry, something happened that rocked this writer to the core. As his flag-draped coffin was brought through the doors, those nasty black clouds parted, and the sun was shining bright. This girl truly believes this was Squirrel Langston’s way of saying, “Later” www.southernsteelmagazine.com
