NOLAN FAST GRAPHIC DESIGN

VETERAN SUICIDE In Design Studio 01 we were instructed to chose a subject and present research on it in a designed way fitting to our subject matter. I chose to spread researched information and awareness on Veteran Suicide with the intent to lower its prevalence, as well as ensuring that information about the Veteran Crisis Line is widely distributed.

MESSAGE TO VETS The assignment for this project was to design a way to gather research for our selected subject. I designed “Message to Vets” so that people could write or draw whatever they’d like to and for veterans. My intent was show veterans that they are not alone, and that they are appreciated and loved. This project is a continuation of my veteran suicide posters, and the messages are going to be made into print form to be given to veterans.

FORM AS MESSAGE This project was meant to deliver a message without the use of words, only visual representation. I cut each silhouette out myself using a jigsaw, I had a specific message in mind for each one, but they have many interpretations.

MAPPING HAPPINESS For this project we picked something that we felt made either ourselves or the general public happy, and had to map it in some way that we saw fit. I chose building and riding vintage motorcycles, mine specifically is a 1978 Suzuki GS 750.

the crazy tank, while being interesting and one

this is where

of a kind, just wasn’t cutting it for me. so the gs750 got a much needed change in appearance, and a reimagined seat.

it all began

never

really finished,

it’s like a design

project that

the bike is

I just can’t get away from.

with the gs750

every time I walk by it, thoughts

race

through my head about

how I could make it

the bike needed

there is ALWAYS room for improvement

some work, quite a bit actually

better..

so I began in the only space I had

accomplishment, from rejuvinating a 36 year old masterpiece of

the bike runs! thought i'd have some

it runs rough, but given

fun with the tank

the fact that I have zero expertise in motorcycle mechanics, I still say it’s...

because without a challenge, life would be

boring,

and who

wants that? It can be frustrating,

annoying, and make you want to

pretty freakin sweet the bike was together,

but untested

sell it on many different occasions,

I wanted to spruce up the bike a bit by painting the wheels a different color. originally I went with the red, but I wasn’t feeling it, so again I had to go with the black

but that shit’s totally

worth it. -Nolan Fast even though I had absolutely

no experience

with

upholstery, and didn’t have a clue how I would build a new seat for the bike, I took

challenge with fear. when it was all

on the little

finished, it obviously looked terrible. but I didn’t give a shit

when winter was over and I

finally

had the bike out, the

elements immediately exposed the

paint

for

what

it

was,

cheap and ineffective. soon enough it flaked and peeled away from the baking sun.

so the bike soon became a nice

sturdy black,

[I was damn proud of myself]

and to go with

the new paint I chopped the muffler off to allow the bikes

true obnoxious self to sound out for everyone to hear.

so, how happy are you?

THOUGHT FOR FOOD TEDx YOUTH LINCOLN This project was done as an independent study with Prof. Aaron Sutherland. The wall pieces were made with recycled rice and flour bags given to us from Lincoln Kids Against Hunger. Included are photos of the installation, photos from when we were putting everything up, and a few photos of audience interaction and participation. The other students who were part of the project were Randall Owens, Tey Leon, and Kaitlyn Nelson.

PUT IT AWAY This was a project for a typography class, we were instructed to modify type to give the audience a “feeling as well as a clear message. This first image was my first iteration, the image on the next page is the final rendition.

KATS MEOW These images are branding and ideation I did for a local photography business. She was looking for a new design for the sign for her building, and this was the beginning of my process of experimentation with design and brand for her.

VISUALIZING A NARRATIVE For this project we picked a story, and had to redeliver it in another visual form. I chose the book The Hatchet, and decided to make it into an aged and distressed wooden book with leather binding. The content consists of important excerpts from main plot points within the book.

WORLD OF VIRUSES This is a website for the University of NebraskaLincoln Museum, Morril Hall. As a class we designed the entire website using the existing content. The Site’s logo is my design. Although, the “World of Viruses - Biology of Human” text was the previous logo that the client wanted to keep and added to my new logo.
