This ice didn’t stop for anything. It acted like a giant plow or bulldozer, pushing over everything in its path. Plants, trees, animals, even hills of soil and rocks were pushed flat by the moving ice. The glaciers pushed through mountains and made new valleys. Trees, rocks, and even animals got picked up and carried by the ice. Some of this stuff got stuck in the ice. People, plants, and animals could not live and grow on the glaciers. It was hard living anywhere near the glaciers! The glaciers kept the air cold in summer and winter. Some scientists think it was also very windy and dry. Glaciers also kept the land near the glaciers almost frozen all year long. This land near glaciers is called the tundra .
