Energy-efficient DIY projects that take just hours to complete Did you know it takes just one afternoon to save money on your utility bills? Take on a few easy DIY projects this weekend to see immediate savings while making your home more comfortable and environmentally friendly for the long term. Now is the perfect time to improve your home’s energy efficiency and set the stage for a warm, comfortable home this winter. One way to boost your home’s energy efficiency is to make sure it’s properly insulated. That doesn’t mean starting from square one or having to make a large investment to re-insulate your home from its foundation. There are several easy ways that you can add insulation and air sealing to your home quickly, easily and cost-effectively so that you can reap immediate benefits. Seal gaps throughout the home. Having trouble keeping your home comfortable year-round? You’re not alone. The average homeowner spends $1,300 a year on energy utility costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Air leaks account for 25-40 percent of the energy used for heating and cooling in a typical home. Products like Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealants from Dow Building Solutions seal those gaps to help you keep the warm air in. Simply spray the insulating sealant in gaps and cracks in the home or attic around doors, windows, plumbing pipes and electrical outlets.

Within minutes, it expands to close the gaps to deliver long-lasting results. A recent study conducted by Dow Building Solutions and DR Nelson & Associates showed an annual $45 savings by sealing plumbing penetrations under sinks with sealants. Insulate the basement ceiling. Rim joists, the area where the basement wall meets the ceiling, are a major source of lost air. If your home has an unfinished basement with rim joists that are lined with precut sections of fiberglass insulation called batt insulation, pop out the insulation and spray sealant along the inner edges of each joist, like you’re outlining a picture frame. The foam expands to form an airtight, water-resistant seal that closes any gaps. In addition to eliminating cold, drafty air, you’ll start saving money immediately. Blanket your water heater. In between hot showers and dishwashing, your water heater continues to store hot water. The heat that’s lost in the process is called standby heat loss and frequently occurs in old water heaters that lack proper insulation. If you have a new water heater, it is likely already insulated. For older water heaters check that it has insulation with an R-value of 24 or higher. If it doesn’t, you can find pre-cut jackets or blankets at most hardware stores that are specifically made for water heaters for around

$20. This quick and simple project could reduce standby heat losses by 25-45 percent and save you approximately 4-9 percent in water heating costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Sweep seal your front door. Gaps beneath doors that lead to the outside allow air to creep in. Slide a U-shaped door sweep directly under the door. It’s an easy, cost-effective way to build a barrier that blocks the cold weather. Add insulation to drafty windows. Add another layer of protection against the threat of cold air by decorating with shades that reduce heat loss. Dual shades that feature reflective white on one side and a heat-absorbing dark color on the other can be reversed depending on the season to increase energy efficiency. Position the shade so the reflective white faces the inside of the room in the cool months to trap the warm air. Since each of these projects takes no longer than a couple of hours to complete, add a few of them to your weekend to-do list. Determine which projects will help maximize your home’s energy efficiency and enjoy the savings all winter.

Replace your air conditioner with an electric heat pump and save. There’s no reason to replace your A/C with another. Heat pumps cool in the summer, heat in the wither, and lower your energy bill throughout the year. 605 North Broadway Wahoo, NE 68066 (402) 443-3222 FAX (402) 443-5483 In partnership with our supplier, Nebraska Public Power District, we deliver energy to you.

Improving dishwasher regimen will save water America’s are doing it all wrong when it comes to dishwashing. Nearly everyone (96 percent) wastes up to an hour each week pre-washing their dishes, according to a recent survey. But the reality is that the outdated ritual of pre-washing can actually result in dirtier dishes and waste a valuable resource - water! People have plenty of activities they’d rather spend an hour each week enjoying, like online shopping, according to a survey conducted by Cascade Platinum and Marie Claire. And, with climate experts reporting that about half of the United States is experiencing some level of drought, it’s important for everyone to look for creative ways to save water. Skipping the pre-wash is an impactful solution. In fact, if members of all U.S. households with automatic dishwashers stopped pre-washing their dishes beforehand, up to 130 billion gallons of water each year could be saved (figure based on an avg. of 47.3 liters of pre-washing water used for every load). “As a busy mom of four, there are never enough hours in the day to accomplish everything I need to get done,” says popular blogger Daisy Teh of TheItMom.com. “I love learning that my dishes can actually get a better clean if I skip the pre-wash. It’s such a simple tip that anyone can adopt and it’s good for the environment.” Here are three key dishwasher regime tips that can help you gain back an hour each week while also conserving water: 1. Assign dish nights - Creating a family “dish duty” schedule ensures the chore is evenly shared across the household, and it allows everyone to

arrange their homework and activity schedules in advance. 2. Skip the pre-wash - Your dishes will come out cleaner if you leave the food on. Simply scrape off the large chunks and then load your dishes straight into the dishwasher without running them under the water first. This can help result in the best possible clean. Need proof? Three-quarters (74 percent) of survey respondents said that their dishes come out of the dishwasher dirty, spotted or streaked when they pre-wash. Here’s why: Detergents are designed to work with food on. Its special enzymes attach to food particles, breaking them down so they can easily be washed away - even 24-hour, stuck-on food. And don’t worry about clogging your pipes; most dishwashers are equipped with a disposal, similar to the one in your sink. As an added bonus, skipping the pre-wash also helps your family conserve water. Dishwashers use about 4.5 gallons of water for the entire cycle, while hand washing dishes uses about 27 gallons, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. 3. Load for success - Place taller dishes in the back of the bottom rack so the detergent chamber isn’t blocked. Put fragile dishes in the top rack further away from the powerful sprayer. Put glasses between the upper rack tines instead of over them. This will prevent water spots from the tines drying on the glasses. And, make sure all your dishes are facing inward and not overlapping. This ensures the water will reach everything. For more tips, visit www.CascadeClean.com. How will you use the time you save by implementing these dish-washing tips? That time is yours now, so use it wisely. And give yourself a pat on the back for helping to save water.

Skipping the pre-wash can save you water and result in cleaner dishes.

Energy-efficient home trends for 2015 and beyond

Energy-efficient homes with comfort and quality are driving the housing market.

These green features can save money now and in the future One of the top trends driving today’s housing market is the demand for energy-efficient homes that don’t sacrifice comfort for quality. If you’re looking to purchase a new home, green features can save money both now and in the future, with numerous earth-friendly benefits. Here’s what is trending for 2015 and beyond.

Functional Spaces

Homebuyers are looking to get more functionality out of less space and often discover downsizing is a viable option for both young families and emptynesters. Modular or manufactured homes are gaining popularity. Homebuyers enjoy thoughtful modern designs that maximize space and functionality, plus the waste from building an entire house in a controlled environment is minimal typically fitting into just two 30-gallon drums or less.

ENERGY STAR

Many of those on the market for a home are seeking ENERGY STAR certification, meaning the home meets stringent requirements from the Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR certified homes from Clayton Homes cost less to heat and cool, are quieter, more durable and have better indoor air quality. Learn more at www.claytonhomes.com/energy_star.cfm. Energy

savings options available on Clayton Homes include low-e windows, additional insulation and advanced heating and cooling options.

Effective insulation

Homebuyers are asking about extra insulation in homes, including the walls, roof and flooring. Properly installed insulation that meets or exceeds national code requirements helps better regulate a home’s temperature so the furnace and air conditioner don’t have to work harder than necessary. The result is lower utility costs and a quieter, more comfortable home.

Advanced heating and cooling features According to a 2009 RECS Survey conducted by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, space heating accounts for 41.5 percent of the average household’s energy consumption, which is why homebuyers seek atmosphere controlling features that can cut this number dramatically. More efficient and properly sized heating and cooling systems, such as a heat pump, use less energy, which makes the home much more energy efficient throughout.

Smart lighting alternatives

Homebuyers are demanding energy-efficient options to save money and energy. According to the EPA, CFL light bulbs use less energy than many other types, which makes them a smart option for an energy-efficient home.

Tight construction

It’s not just what you can see that makes a house green, it’s the process itself that can make a big difference. That’s why tight construction and tight ducts are a must when building a home. Builders must pay close attention to detail by sealing all holes, cracks and seams in ducts and construction assemblies. This helps to eliminate drafts, moisture, dust, pests and pollen, plus boosts comfort while lowering maintenance costs.

Low-E windows

Windows are an investment that pays dividends for many years to come. Buyers are demanding at least double-paned options with low emissivity, also known as low-e, advanced window coatings that help retain heat during winter and keep it out during summer. This microscopic layer also blocks damaging ultraviolet sunlight that can discolor carpets and furniture.

Shopping smarter for family necessities can help the environment Everyday choices can affect your family’s health as well as the environment. There’s a growing trend among consumers to make choices reflecting the goals and values that matter to them most. In fact, two out of five people

say they’re more inspired to try a natural product that does something good for themselves, their family and the planet, according to a recent study conducted by Toluna for natural products brand Tom’s of Maine.

So where can your family start? Here are a few ideas for easy changes:

The Basics

Starting with the products you use most frequently can be a simple way to shift your choices to a healthier place. Many hygiene products, such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste use unnecessary chemicals that can be unfriendly to those with sensitive skin or allergies. Natural ingredients work as well or better than the artificial variety, so look for options that don’t rely on dyes, formaldehyde or parabens. Such ingredients directly impact waterways once they go down the drain. More natural options can be kinder to your body and the environment. Cleaning products like floor polish, glass cleaners, and bathroom disinfectants can be harsh. Consider gentler alternatives. Additionally, certain food products contain

artificial sweeteners or use pesticides. Try switching to less processed foods and buying organic when possible. Look for locally sourced foods for added freshness and to reduce overall carbon footprint in transit.

What’s Inside Matters

Are there really wildflowers in your toilet bowl cleaner? Ignore eye-catching packaging and simply read the ingredients. Seek out a list of simple and understandable renewable and naturally-sourced ingredients. And while you’re reading that label, inspect the material on which it’s printed. Minimal packaging made of recyclable materials is ideal. We can all be part of the solution by using greener products. The impact of a few simple changes can have a lasting ripple effect that goes well beyond your home.

How to make your yard more environmentally friendly It’s easy to make your home more eco-friendly, and your yard is a great place to start. This season, take steps to limit your home’s impact on the local environment by giving your outdoor spaces an earth-friendly makeover.

turning off appliances when they aren’t in use. Now it’s time to take your greener living campaign to your home’s outdoor spaces by protecting wildlife and tweaking the way you maintain your lawn.

Be Flexible

An eco-friendly yard will contain plenty of vegetation that provides cover and food for such wildlife as birds. Unfortunately your home itself can present a threat to their safety. Millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows. You can protect birds from this fate by applying decals to your windows that contain a component that reflects ultraviolet sunlight. Because the UV reflectivity may fade over time based on exposure, replace the decals every six to nine months and reapply the liquid every three months. For more application tips and information about bird safety, visit www.WindowAlert.com.

The mark of a beautiful, eco-friendly yard is not necessarily a conventional lawn. Fuel, water and a lot of time are necessary to maintain green grass. In at least some parts of your property, consider alternative ground cover that has a lower carbon footprint to maintain. Ornamental grasses, shrubs, thyme and other colorful, low-maintenance plants that don’t grow very tall can make for a sustainable alternative that’s just as visually appealing as grass. You may already be taking steps inside your home to be more planet-friendly, such as recycling, composting food scraps, using LED bulbs and

Be Bird-Friendly

Limit Yard Waste

When the leaves fall from the trees, you may be dealing with extra bundles of yard waste. Take steps to handle the debris properly. Never throw your leaves and trimmings out with the garbage. Instead, try composting what you can at home or bagging the waste to use as mulch on an as-needed basis. If your community has special pick-up days for yard waste, take advantage of those. Additionally, you can leave some clippings on the lawn to act as an organic fertilizer and provide the soil with nutrients.

4 tips for conserving ‘invisible’ water every day Every day the average American family uses 300 gallons of water for everything from brushing their teeth and washing clothes to running the sprinkler and flushing the toilet, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Beyond this, families also use lots of water in ways they don’t see. Water is needed to grow food and manufacture favorite products. It’s often called virtual or invisible water - the water that’s hidden in the things you eat, products you use and clothes you wear. For example, it takes 700 gallons of water to make one T-shirt and 40,000 gallons to manufacture one car, according to the Value of Water Coalition. Growing a single apple requires 19 gallons of water. In fact, 86 percent of all water used is invisible to most consumers because it’s used to produce food, beverages and products, according to the coalition. “As consumers, we need to focus on the water we can’t see to make an even bigger impact in helping the environment, saving money and conserving the world’s most precious resource,” says Roman Lis, a principal engineer at MWH Global, an engineering and strategic consulting firm focused on water and natural resources. “The good news is there are simple steps we can take, starting where we live and work. At the same time, more manufacturers are changing their processes and systems to smartly reduce the amount of water they need to make the high-quality products we buy and enjoy.” How can you take water conservation one step farther in your daily life? MWH, which also helps

companies safely assess, reduce and reuse water in their manufacturing processes, offers four tips for reducing your invisible water consumption. 1. Add up your daily habits. Find out how much water - real and invisible - you use each day as a starting point to determine the best steps to consider in reducing your consumption. You can log your daily habits into the Water Footprint Calculator at www.waterfootprint.org. Choose the “extended” water calculator, which tallies the water you use at home and the water that’s in the food you eat and industrial products you buy. 2. Make simple switches. Consider substituting products that use more water with others that have a smaller water footprint. For example, drink more tap or filtered water instead of buying bottled water. Find favorite recipes that replace or use less meat. (It takes 1,230 gallons of water to yield one beef steak.) Buy more clothes with artificial fibers instead of cotton which is made with more water. 3. Use water-efficient appliances. Toilets, dishwashers and washing machines use a significant portion of a household’s visible water consumption. When it’s time to replace a household appliance, do your research. You can find out the amount of water an appliance uses from the manufacturer’s data and compare various products to identify the ones that have the lowest water consumption. Replacing an old toilet, for example, can reduce the toilet’s water consumption by 20 to 60 percent, according to the EPA. 4. Choose more sustainable products and practices. It’s not always easy to know the water

footprint of your favorite products since there aren’t any labeling requirements. However, some product labels or websites may note the company’s sustainable practices, including water, for acquiring, producing and distributing goods. Try to select products you trust as being made in more environmentally and water-friendly ways, and ask for more product transparency from businesses. Look for companies that have high sustainability ratings. There are various organizations that

rank companies based on sustainability including Forbes magazine. “Freshwater is a limited resource, and there’s more demand as the world’s population grows and sources of clean, fresh water decrease,” says Lis. “Greater awareness of how and where invisible water is used every day can help more families save water and costs, while ensuring this natural resource is available for generations to come.”
