Schurke looking forward to position as race director at Crawford County Speedway Kay Schurke will take over duties as the Crawford County Race Director in 2014. She was the assistant race director at the CCS a year ago and is entering her seventh year as the race director at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan. Racing at the CCS takes place on Friday night while Harlan races on Saturday night. Schurke spent the last several years scoring at the CCS and SCS, as well as the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta. “I’ve turned the scoring duties over to a couple of other staff members, but I will still be around to help if they need it,” Schurke said. Schurke stated she’s very much looking forward to her new duties as race director. “The drivers know me and know what I expect out of them. They know what the rules are, so I think things will go very well,” noted Schurke, whose first night of weekly competi-

tion at the CCS will take place tonight (Friday). There were a few improvements made at the local track, according to the 55-year-old mother of four. “We made some improvements on turns three and four. They are now banked and they’re almost mirrored to turns one and two,” Schurke said. “We had tiling done, so the track drains better, because the front straightaway would always fill up with water, so we have a new drainage tool in,” Schurke remarked. One of big improvements a year ago was the addition of a new digitial scoreboard. “That’s been nice. It’s nice for the drivers and for the fans. The drivers can see what lap they’re on and what position they’re in as well. The fans in the stands now are able to know who is in the lead,” Schurke said. The weekly racing program at the CCS will feature six sanctioned divisions: the RaceSaver 305

Kay Schurke Sprint Cars, IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts. The RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars are new to the CCS this season. The Sprint Cars are part of the Saturday night weekly program at the

Speedway Fun for the Whole Family!

Eagle Raceway in Nebraska, according to Schurke. “Our average car count a year ago was right at 100 cars. That’s a good count, but we’re hoping for a few more this year,” Schurke said. “I know in looking at the registrations that we have some new drivers interested in racing, so that’s very encouraging,” Sch-

urke added. Schurke said the 2014 schedule features a lot of exciting nights for those racing and the fans. “The July 3 and 4 races stand out. Everyone always seems to want to know what we’re doing on those two nights, so basically it’s two separate nights with separate purses,” Schurke said. “We’re looking to maybe do something with fireworks on July 4, but a lot of the details haven’t been worked out yet because I know the city of Denison has fireworks on July 3.” “We’re also lining up some kids’ activities, but we’re still working on that. We’re maybe looking at a scout night, a little league night, but a lot of details have not been finalized yet,” Schurke said. Schurke noted that the sponsors for this year have really stepped up. “We have 18 race nights this year, which is three more than we had last year,” Schurke said. “We appreciate all of our sponsors. We couldn’t

offer what we do without them.” Schurke is excited to get the season going. “We’re ready to go. Now if it would only warm up.” Schurke said. A year ago, the CCS also hosted points racing in the John Deere Championship Series. The Series paid out a purse of $12,000 to the top 10 drivers in the IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts at the CCS and Buena Vista Raceway in Alta. “We’re not sure what’s going to happen with that series. One of the businesses involved is in the process of being bought out, so it’s all been put on hold until all that is taken care of,” Schurke said. “We would like to do it again between the CCS and Buena Vista Raceway, because it helps the local tracks out and it helps the local drivers in an effort to get a little extra money, but we’ll have to wait and see what progresses,” Schurke stated.

Stapleton returns to track with new excitement, enthusiasm and dedication After putting racing on hold for almost 15 years because of family, Mike Stapleton of rural Denison returned to the track two years ago with a new sense of commitment and fortitude. In his first full year back on the track last summer, Stapleton won two feature races at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison and one at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan driving the No. 10 Stock Car. He finished sixth in the final points standings at Denison and second at Harlan a year ago in the Stock Car class. An accident late in the season at Denison kept Stapleton out out the top five. “I was a little disappointed with our sixthplace finish only because we had been doing pretty well before the accident took place,” said Stapleton, who is an assistant supervisor in this his 25th year on the job at Farmland Foods in Denison. His wife, Heather, works

that in my first full year back,” he added. “Overall, though, we had three feature wins and nine or 10 heat wins, so it was a good year for the most part in just getting back into it,” remarked Stapleton, whose two sons, Corey, 24, and Alec, 18, are also involved in the sport of racing. Corey races Figure-8 and won the front-wheel drive division at the Coon Rapids Championships, while Alec will graduate this spring from Denison High School and race for the first time at the CCS in the Sport Compact class. “It’s nice to see the next generation. My dad drove for a short time,” Stapleton said. “Then he built race cars my whole life and had someone else drive. Then I was able to jump into the car and drive, so it’s the third generation on the track now.” Entering the 2014 race season that kicks off at the CCS on Friday, May 2, Stapleton said he has one

Stapleton’s goal is to finish in Stock Cars top five STAPLETON...from Page 4 main goal. “I want to finish every race. That’s my main goal this year. You know, trying to go after a track championship might be out of our reach,” Stapleton said. “The competition is unreal. There are some real heavyweight hitters in this class. It just goes to show that the midwest is an excellent place to go racing with the competition the way it is.” “I would like to finish in the top five and I think

we’re very capable of doing that,” noted Stapleton, who finished with 492 points in the final standings at the CCS a year ago. Donovan Smith of Lake City won the Stock Car points championship last summer with 565 points. Officials at the CCS have made several improvements over the last couple of years and Stapleton said they’ve been favorable. “It’s been a well thoughtout plan. The track is really fast. It’s exciting to race two and three cars wide on both corners. The

track is smooth all the way around, so I’m really looking forward to this year with the improvements made to the track,” Stapleton said. Like any driver would tell you, they wouldn’t be able to race without the help of great sponsors. “Sponsors are everything. If a guy doesn’t have any sponsors, you can’t do it by yourself,” said Stapleton, who stated that it costs about $200 a night just to take the car out of the garage. “So without sponsors,

I think all of us would be sitting on the trailer, I really do. They donate money and time to get you back on the track and they also find a way to help out when you’re in a pinch,” Stapleton noted. Stapleton said that a lot more goes into racing that what you see every week on the track. “They say that 90 percent of the races are won at home in the garage and not on the track. If you don’t prepare and do your homework, your car won’t be reliable and you won’t

finish the race,” Stapleton said. Every driver also has a reliable pit crew with them each week and Stapleton is no different. Members of his crew include his father, Pat, stepmother, Kate, his two sons, as well as Brian Rank and Dusty O’Brien. Rank of BJR Farms and Stapleton formed a partnership two years ago. “BJR Farms is probably my biggest sponsor. “Rank and I pretty much do everything financially together, and I get the

pleasure of driving,” Stapleton said. Stapleton said returning to the sport two years ago was one of the best decisions of his life. “It was a hard decision to get out of racing. I love to race, but family was more important at the time. I actually didn’t go to a race the year after, so getting back on the track two years ago got my juices flowing again,” Stapleton stated. “Needless to say, I’m looking forward to a great year,” Stapleton said.

Pugh found above the action

Lane Pugh

www.ccsdirtracing.com

A good flagman has to have a strong backbone. That according to 26-year-old Lane Pugh, who will flag fulltime this season at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison. From Auburn, Pugh helped T.J. Ray with flagging duties at the CCS for the majority of last season. This year also will mark the third straight year that Pugh will flag the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan. “It’s just in my blood,” said Pugh. “Growing up, my dad raced stock cars, so I’ve always been around the sport. Honestly, I’v always wanted to be a flagger.” Pugh, whose fulltime job is working at Evapco Inc. in Lake View, said being right above the action on the frontstretch is the most exciting part of his profession. “I really can’t explain it, but the thrill is amazing. It’s exciting to know that I’m the guy in control of the race,” Pugh said. “At the same time, ev-

eryone is watching you, so you have pay special attention to everything that’s happening on the track,” he added. Treating all drivers on the track the same is also a key component of the job, according Pugh, whose parents own Finish Line Racing Products in Sac City and attend the weekly races at Alta, Denison and Harlan supplying drivers with car parts and fuel. “When flagging, a lot is happening on the track, so you really have to pay attention to what’s going on. You also need to have a keen eye,” Pugh said. “And, I have to remember to treat all drivers fairly. I have a lot of friends that drive, but on race nights, my job is make

sure that all of the drivers follow the rules, no exceptions.” Pugh said the improvements made at the CCS a year ago makes for exciting racing. “I really liked what they did in shortening the track. The corners are banked and it’s just a lot quicker for the drivers,” Pugh said. “I think it’s exciting for everyone to see drivers go three-wide. I like to see that and I know the fans like it as well. It just adds to the enjoyment for everyone involved.” “I’m excited to get the season started. Like I said, this is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Pugh said. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to flag for a long time.”

Members of Webb clan at Crawford County Speedway

Track is second home for Webb family Racing is in her blood. For Kara Webb, the track is like a second home for the 2003 graduate of Denison High School and now a working mother of a four-year-old son. The 2014 season at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison will mark the second straight year that Webb will compete in the Mach-1 Sport Compact class. Before advancing to circle track, she competed in Figure-8 racing. Webb finished 16th a year ago in the final points standings with 192 points. She was possibly staring at a top-10 finish before a roll-over accident midway through last season sidelined her for five weeks.

“I remember it very well. It was June 21. I got hit on the backstretch and I just couldn’t save it,” Webb said. “I knew I was going over, but I never thought I would roll like that.” She figured the car rolled six or seven times before coming to rest. “I suffered a concussion and had a lot of bruises. I was black and blue. I’ve always dealt with motion sickness and it’s come on a lot more since the accident, but I feel pretty fortunate because it could have been a lot worse,” Webb said. Her first full night back on the track after five weeks resulted in a blown front-right tire, but one week later, she won her heat race and first-ever feature race.

“It was one of the best nights of my life,” Webb remembers. “I won my heat race and then my older brother, Ryan, won his heat race and then we both won our features, so it was really neat and a big deal to me.” Ryan races in the Modified class, as does her younger brother, Jesy. Ryan and Jesy graduated from DHS in 2000 and 2006. Webb, though, did have some reservations after the accident about returning to the sport and track where she all but grew up. “I did hesitate a little in wanting to get back on the track. Crawford County Speedway 2014 Divisions Modifieds The IMCA Modifieds have become the calling card of the IMCA. The high-flying, open-wheel stock cars push limits of power and excitement on short tracks from coast to coast. Modifieds have gained a reputation for fierce competitiveness that is as unique as the car itself. Stock Cars One of IKMA’s most popular classes. Stock Cars are synonymous with fastpaced excitement and known for their identifiable, full-bodied appearance. They offer fender-banging thrills and chills that keep fans coming back. Hobby Stocks IMCA also features an entry-level division of full-sized cars, the IMCA

Make this space work for you too!

Page 11

Hobby Stocks. The division gives competitors the chance to experiment with the sport at the lowest possible cost, while still experiencing the rush that only IMCA racing can provide. Sprint Cars The IMCA Sprint Car boasts its own special appeal for racing enthusiasts. The Sprint Car features the traditional non-winged, as well as winged machines with open wheels and an open cockpit. Sport Mods An entry-level division. Sport Mods gives new competitors the chance to experiment with modified racing at the lowest possible cost. Sport Compacts A true entry-level divison. Sport Compacts are not race cars, they are cars that race. They can purchased off the street or at a salvage yard. The division is for younger drivers, not those that want to get out of late models or modifieds. There is a minimum age of 14.

Webb enjoys sport dominated by men WEBB, from Page 8 same turn, but I just told myself that I had to get through this,” Webb said. “Once I got out there and got a few laps in, I was fine.” In a sport that seems to be dominated by males, Webb likes the fact that more women are starting to get involved. “I’m all for it. I’ve always been around it and it’s a big part of my life,” Webb said. “I’ve talked to a lot of younger girls who want to get into it. I always tell them that if it’s something they want to do, then do it, because otherwise they might grow up and regret not doing it.” “That’s the main reason why I race. I just said that I always wanted to and I just needed to do it,” Webb said. “That way I know I did it. Whether I’m successful or not, at least I can say that I tried it.” Webb, whose son, Coy, will start preschool this fall in Denison, has been the Assisted Living Manager

Kara Webb at Silveridge in Denison since November of 2013. She attended Western Iowa Tech and became a licensed practical nurse and got her professional start at Eventide in Denison before taking a position at Silveridge. In high school, Webb was a three-sport athlete competing in basketball all four years, soccer for three years and golf for one year. As a sophomore, she was a member of Don Lyons’ 2000-01 Monarch basketball team that ad-

vanced to the state tournament in Class 3A. Webb will race in the Sport Compact class this year, but her goal is to move up to the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods a year from now. “It’s a Modified. My brothers race A-Mods. They’re pretty similar, so I could get a lot more help from my brothers, because right now they’re not that familiar with the class I run. It would be a plus to work out of the same shop,” Webb said. A year ago, Webb raced in Denison on Friday night and Harlan on Saturday nights. “I’m going back to school now, so racing two nights a week probably isn’t going to happen,” remarked Webb, who also said that her brothers are planning to race only in Denison this year. Webb said that her brothers’ cars are unique in that they basically are the only ones in the area that use ethanol. WEBB...Page 13

Webb anxious to start 2014 season surrounded by family WEBB, from Page 12 “They run 98-percent ethanol, which is not all that common. They’re kind of two of the pioneers in racing with ethanol, especially around here, so our racing team is doing what we can to promote ethanol,” Webb said. “We’ve done studies where we’ve torn down the motors at the end of the season and were really impressed with the lack of wear and tear.” “Ethanol runs cooler than traditional racing fuel so it’s easier on the motor. We’ve also had one put on a Dyno and found we had more horsepower with ethanol than with regular fuel,” Webb said. Webb also mentioned she will be racing for a cause this year. “This year I’m racing along with a few other drivers who are coming together to support a very special little girl,” Webb said. “Lyric Rayne Hildebrant of Denison is a one-yearold who has been diagnosed with a rare form of Epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. There is no cure for this disease and research to find a cure is ongoing.” “Laps for Lyric was created to help support the foundation behind that research. We race to raise awareness on behalf of that beautiful baby girl.” Webb remarked. Webb contributes being able to race each week to the sponsors that support her. “I wouldn’t be able to

Kara Webb’s Sport Compact Feature Win race if I didn’t have my sponsors’ support. They’re some really amazing people and businesses,” Webb said. So far this year, her sponsors include: Hillside Grille Steakhouse, The Reimer Boys, Lambert Family Chiropractic, American Green Gasoline, The Juice Bar and Grill, J &A Farms, F.A. Kookie, and Mom & Shane. Webb also comments, “I’ll always be indebted to Ron and Callie Johnson, David Reisz, Richard Kuhn, and Bill Miller. Without them I wouldn’t have been back on the racetrack just five weeks after my rollover. They pulled together and helped me rebuild.” The sponsors that are behind Ryan and Jesy are: DW Engines, Adams Land & Livestock, Mycogen Seeds, Cleveland Ag, N-Serve, E4 Crop Intelligence, United Western Coop, SIRE Energy, Hoppe Airspray, The Juice Bar & Grill, Rasmussen Farms, Empire Land and Cattle, Hillside Grille Steakhouse, Western Iowa Coop, Iowa Corn Growers Associa-

tion, CHS Energy, Ethanol, Envy Suspension, Do It Best, The Roasterie, Fast Eddy, F.A. Kookie, and Mom & Shane. With Kara, Ryan and Jesy all behind the wheel, the sport of racing is definitely a family affair that includes her father, stepmother, mother, uncle and younger brothers all coming together to support their efforts. Among the crew members are father (Jack Webb), uncle (Ty Knott) and brothers (Cody and Cameron Webb). Those who also operate behind the scenes and aid in pit support are their mother (Kitty Knott), as well as Terri, Kristin, Brittany, Jackson and Kambry Webb, Coy, and Shane Boeck. “A lot of people think you race just to have a good time, but it’s what we do as a family all year long. I guess that’s one thing that kind of sets us apart. We are very family-oriented and everyone does their own part. I love them all and wouldn’t trade racing with them for anything,” Webb said.

RaceSaver Sprint Cars new sanction New at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison this season will be the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars class. Featured in the past during the Crawford County Fair, the RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars will become part of the regular Friday night lineup at the CCS from May 2 through August 22. The five other sanctioned divisions - the IMCA Extreme Motor Sports Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts - will have their season championship night at the CCS on Aug. 29. “We were looking for a division that

complemented the rest of our regular classes and the Sprint Cars do that,” commented Kay Schurke, who is beginning her first season as race director at the CCS. “This is also one way we can expand our fan base. We have a lot of people in the area who like Sprint Cars and I know drivers in the other classes like watching them too,” she added. Schurke remarked that featuring the SuperSaver 305 Sprint Cars will be exciting and different at the same time. “Not a lot of people have been around them on a weekly basis. The fair has had SPRINT CARS...Page 15

Schurke hoping to draw sprint cars from Nebraska and Minnesota SPRINT CARS, from Page 14 the 360 Sprint Cars, but it’s going to be different in how it’s staffed because they will need to be pushed, Schurke said. “Some of the guys bring their own push vehicle, but some don’t, so that’s going to be a challenge to see how many push vehicles I will need based on how many Sprint Cars show up. Schurke stated that the RaceSaver 305 Sprint series is really just getting started. Eagle Raceway in Nebraska features the RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars during its Saturday night venue under race promoter Roger Hadan. “Hadan was one of the first promoters to get the class going. His first year out was two years ago and I think he had 12 to 13 Sprint Cars each week, Schurke said. “But last year, I guess it just exploded, as he had over 30 cars each night. They really want to try and get the Sprint Cars in this area more, because they don’t have but maybe five or six tracks that they can run at for a weekly show. “So with us running on Friday nights, that will give them Sprint Car drivers another track to compete at for regional, state and national points, Schurke said. “Otherwise, they only have Eagle

Racing Flags Status

Raceway in Nebraska, and I believe the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines, the last I heard, was also going to run Sprint Cars on Friday night, but I haven’t heard more on that since they announced that last fall. Schurke said that Des Moines featuring the 305 Sprint Cars on Friday nights would more than likely not hurt Denison’s car count for the Sprint Cars on the same night. “Des Moines will probaly pick up drivers from Illinois. We’ll get drivers from Nebraska and I’m hoping from Minnesota and all around, Schurke said. The RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars will bring a lot of excitement, according to Schurke. “We’re not sure where we’re going to run them in the field, but that will all come together. It’s going to experimental for everyone, as far as the staff and the track, but Hadan will be here on the first night to help us out, Schurke said. The RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars also will run on Thursday, July 3, at the local speedway. The points season for the 305 Sprint Cars will end a week earlier at the CCS than the other IMCA divisions because of the Sprint Car Super Nationals at Eagle Raceway Aug. 29-31.
