Fox Run Golf Club ready for busy season

Riverside still looks good Dodge Riverside Golf Club sure doesn’t look its age. Established in 1927, Dodge Riverside underwent an extensive facelift in 1996. The result is now an enjoyable course with mature, tree-lined fairways, a new irrigation and drainage system and a modern clubhouse. And you don’t have to drive it 300 yards to compete, as it measures just 6,400 yards from the back tees. Dodge Riverside, located at 2 Harrahs Boulevard just off Interstate 29 at Exit 53A (3284660), is run by head professional Tom Potvin, who is in his 32nd year at the course. Assistants Jeff Nielsen and Kim Mann are in their 14th and 22nd years, respectively.

Since 1927, Dodge Riverside has offered both great golf and a spectacular view. The course superintendent is Kevin Davie. Inside the clubhouse are the pro shop and the Riverside Grille, a full-service restau-

rant and bar with spectacular views of the Missouri River and downtown Omaha. Just one-half mile from the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, it’s

also a popular stop for those who use the bike and walking trail located next to the facility. Directly across the street from Dodge Riverside is the par-3 Westwood Golf Course. It’s a great place to work on your short game or to introduce someone to the game of golf. Weekday rates at Dodge Riverside are $14 for nine holes and $21 for 18 holes to walk, and $21 for nine and $31 for 18 with a cart. Weekend rates are $16 for nine and $26 for 18 to walk, and $24 for nine and $37 for 18 to ride. At Westwood there are no carts. It’s $8 for nine holes and $11 for 18.

With league play getting underway and more tournaments than in the past on its schedule, it’s a busy time of year at Fox Run Golf Club. But that doesn’t mean the semi-private golf facility at 3001 MacIneery Drive isn’t ready for the average golfer to stop by and play a round. The 18-hole, par-71 course measures 6,234 yards from the back tees, but four sets of tee locations make it enjoyable for golfers of any skill level. Fox Run opened in 1987 under the name Scottish Links, providing golfers links golf in a parkland setting. The course is accompanied by a driving range and practice greens for

chipping and putting. Weekday walking rates at Fox Run are $13 for nine holes and $18 for 18. With a cart, they are $20 and $30. Those same rates apply to weekends after 11 a.m. Discounted rates are available for senior (over 55) and junior (under 18) golfers. Individual and family memberships are available at Fox Run. The course is also available for special events and group outings. Fox Run offers a youth golf clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays in June. Food and drinks are available on site at The Den at Fox Run, which also offers a catering menu for special events.

Spacious Bent Tree is the site of the Iowa Golf Association’s amateur championships this summer.

Bent Tree to host IGA championships Southwest Iowa golfers at all stages of the game are in for a treat when they set foot on Bent Tree Golf Course this season. Located four miles east of Council Bluffs at 23579 Highway 6, Bent Tree is a spacious course that will appeal to all degrees of talent. With five sets of tee boxes, the course can span over 7,000 yards in length. Players must consider wind into their playing experience as changes in elevation make the wind a huge factor. In July, Bent Tree will host the Iowa Golf Association’s state amateur championships. The event will run July 23-25 with an entry deadline of July 15. Tony Driscoll, an assistant golf professional at Bent Tree, said golf fans will be in for a treat at the tournament. Bent Tree has hosted IGA events before, but this summer will be the first time it hosts the amateur championships. “It’s the biggest event in the Iowa Golf Association,” Driscoll said. “We’ll be setting up for that, and the course will be very challenging and difficult at our 18-hole championship golf facility.” The course will be closed to the public during that event, but when it’s open, golfers will be treated to some picturesque and challenging championship links. Monday through Thursday, $42 dollars will pay for 18 holes and a cart. During weekends, the fee is $50.

Golfers can call the clubhouse (712-566-9441) to book a tee time.

“Come out and enjoy the golf course,” Driscoll said. “It’s as good as it gets.”

Country Club a treat As the city’s only private golf course, the Council Bluffs Country Club offers a variety of options for members. The newly recarpeted clubhouse – which overlooks Lake Manawa at 4500 Piute Street – features a lounge, banquet room and pro shop. Membership includes full family privileges and allows access to the pool, tennis courts and dock, among other luxuries. But the club is perhaps most known for its championship-level 18-hole golf course, driving range and practice facilities. The course, which plays to a par of 71, measures at 6,300 yards from the back tees and 5,400 from the front. The front nine holes offer a generally more open look off the tee, with four holes that include water hazards. Trees and smaller greens characterize the back nine, which also features two ponds and holes of
