Guest Column by Paster Dan Safarik We need to listen for sounds of Christmas The story is told about a hunter walking along a road in the mountains of New Mexico who came upon a hunting guide lying on the road with his ear to the ground. The hunter went over and listened. The guide said, “Large wheels, Ford pickup, green color, man driving with large hunting dog in back, Colorado license plates and traveling about 40 miles an hour.” The hunter was astounded, “You mean to tell me you can tell all that just by listening with your ear to the ground?’ “Ear to the ground, nothing,” the hunting guide said, “That was the truck that just ran me over.” We can easily get run over by the holiday season before we realize it. It’s better to “put our ear to the ground” before we get knocked to the ground in the clamor of the season. We need to listen carefully to the sounds of the sacred around us. Frederick Buechner reminds us that the Bible uses hearing, not seeing, as the predominant image for the way human beings know God. One of the words that remind us to listen is an Old English word we don’t hear much any more. The word is “hark”. If it weren’t for the Christmas hymn “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” we would probably not Letter to Santa even know the word. A young man reads his letter to Santa during Santa’s visit to Waverly. Santa has made stops in all the Hark is one of the big-little words of the towns this month visiting with children, naughty or nice. (Staff Photo by Peggy Brown) Christmas season. It reminds us to listen early for the sounds of the Christ child before the other noises take over. The word is much

like saying, “Listen!” or “Quiet,” “Pay attention.” Many of the references in the Bible about the coming of Christ are full of this theme of alertness and watchfulness. One of those is Mark 13:33, “Take heed, watch; for you do not know when the time will come.” In his book, “Stranger at Killknock,” Leonard Wibberlet imagines Christ returning to earth as an Irish peasant. He restores the hearing of a man who’s been deaf for 30 years. So delighted was the man at being able to hear again that every morning he pushed a glass over the edge of the counter so he could listen to it break. “It has three sounds,” he explained, “a dull thud, like a bang of a bass drum; then a dry crackling sound, like 10 dry sticks breaking; and then the tinkling sound of falling pieces of glass.” Most of us have never tried this experiment to listen for three sounds. We’re too busy cringing to really hear what we consider an awful sound. Someone has suggested there are three sounds of Christmas, for those who listen to them. First, there’s the Angel’s song. That‘s celebration deluxe. Second, there’s the song of the shepherds in the stable. There’s simplicity in that time. Third, is the cry of the child, the cry of new life and redemption. As the song goes, “Do you hear what I hear? A child, a child, crying in the night…” Harken to the sounds of Christmas. Prayer: Our Lord, help us to hear new sounds, fresh songs of Christmas. Amen.

First graders describe North Pole job EAGLE – First grade students in Ann Rieker’s class at Eagle Elementary School were asked to describe what kind of job they would have at the North Pole. Here is a sample of their answers. My job at the North Pole is to report to Santa and to make and wrap toys. – Natalie Savage My job at the North Pole is to come down to watch the people. We watch them to see if they are bad or good. We tell Santa that sure everyone is good as I want presents for

everyone. – Kira Stroh My job at the North Pole is to make toys for the children to watch the children if they are good or bad. – Chloe Swett My job at the North Pole is to bring a gord for Santa Claus. If there was a toy robot I would be a good gord. – Jaxson Kinell My job at the North Pole is to make toys that is a stuffed animal that the children can play with and tell Santa what they want. – Brooklyn Mans My job at the North Pole is

making toys. I would make cars and helicopters. – Holden Kroese My job at the North Pole is wrapping presented to them toys. When it is Christmas we have fun. – Makenzie Allen My job at the North Pole is wrapping presents to go under the trees. – Sam Mather My job at the North Pole is to make presents and to fly and help Santa Claus. – Olivia Medinger

WAVERLY – Second grade students in Kim Frantzen’s class at Hamlow Elementary were asked to relocate santas workshop. Here is a sample of their answers. If Santa would move his workshop, I think he should move it to the top of Mount Rushmore, because it usually snows there. Because there’s so much snow, it would still be could enough for the reindeer. Santa would be able to see a monument everyday. Santa and his elves could carve Santa’s face into Mount Rushmore. His sleigh could get around faster because he has higher ground. – Josiah Bultman If Santa would have to move his toyshop, I think he should move to my house. He could work with my dog. I’m sure I could get a tiny bed for the elves to sleep in. – Alaina Ropte If Santa had to move his toyshop, I think he should move it to Waverly. I could go there and get toys whenever I want. I might ask for a million dollars. Maybe a new trampoline. And a toy car. Also a bigger backyard. And a racetrack. – Taylor Nelson If Santa had to move his toyshop, I think he should move it to Waverly. At the football stadium, because I could buy a toy at the football stadium. – Jack Whitefoot I think the ocean since he could suntan his fat belly. And read a book while the elves work. And he wouldn’t have to wear fur, he would wear a swimsuit. And the elves would get mad since Santa got to tan. And then the people could see Santa. It would be a little crazy because there would be a lot of people at the beach. He could go fishing and his boat wouldn’t have a motor. He could put chains on the reindeer and attach the other side of the chains to the front of the boat. – Isaac Clarke I think he should move it to Waverly, because he would get to me house quick, and we might get a lot of presents. And I might still be awake. I would be playing. I might be asleep. My brother would be asleep. I would have both Christmas trees up. The

By Alaina Ropte, Hamlow Elementary second grade pink one and the green one. I would leave cookies and milk and carrots out. – Bree Geschke I would want it in my house because he would know what I would want for Christmas. And I could go and visit Santa. My family and me could go on his sleigh. We could go on vacation with him. We could go on his sleigh and drop of presents in the chimney. Also we could help Santa wrap the presents and make the toys for all the girls and boys. We would have a fun night. – Annie Harms I think he should move it to Antarctica because Antarctica is like the North Pole. It would be colder than usual. Santa would see penguins, walrus and polar bears. – Trey Greening I would move it in my house because I have Santa stuff. I might have room in my backyard. I might have room in my basement. I like the toys and I like elves and I like Santa and I like every-

thing. – Dylan Ramsier I think I would like it in Australia because the monkey and the other animals would get presents. I think the monkeys would get presents. Also the insects and spiders would get them, too. Also the cats would get mice to chew on. Also the trees would get water. Also all the animals I already said, and all of the rest of the animals, would get nice, comfy beds. Also maybe Santa could find some carrot seeds for his reindeer. I think the animals would like it. – Rees Bunting I think he should build a toyshop in the jungle. That way, if people go to the North Pole, the toyshop won’t be there, and the animals in the jungle could give him good ideas. He could make stuffed animals of all the creatures and even elves. He would step out of the toyshop to listen to the beautiful sounds. – Chevy Buffum

Korte’s third graders note lead reindeers birthday WAVERLY – Third grade students of Kaylee Korte’s class at Waverly Intermediate School were asked how they would celebrate Rudolph’s 50th birthday. Here is a sample of their answers. Dear Rudolph: I will leave a bunch of carrots and they will be all just for you. Please tell Santa I want a phone for Christmas. Please tell Santa to come early this year. Run, Run, Rudolph to Tucker’s house. Santa’s going to make it to town. I have a pet rabbit. I want Santa to see it. So please stop by my house. – Tucker Bliss Last Christmas I had the funniest Christmas of all and it was fun, too, because I spent the whole vacation with my family. I went to Sioux Falls with my family and my dad’s grandma lives there. I celebrated Christmas. There were so many presents and I can’t want for this Christmas. – Madelyn Shriner I know what I’m going to do

for Rudolph’s 50th birthday. I’m going to go to Greenwood and go to the fire station and get it all set up. Then put all the things we are going to do for his birthday. When his birthday arrives I will say it like this. This first thing we are going to do is have a rely race around the world and give Rudolph a five second start. Next we are going to do sleigh rides. Then we will give him his gifts. Finally last, we will give him carrot cake and I hope it is the best carrot cake ever. – Jadah Scott I would celebrate Rudolph’s birthday by giving him a lot of presents. Say Happy birthday. You are a good reindeer. You have a good birthday. Be good with Santa. You are a good boy. – Logan Parde It was Rudolph’s 50th birthday. I was going to surprise him with a Rudolph cake. Don’t tell him though. We get to have a flying game and Rudolph gets a head

start. We also are going to invite Santa because Rudolph and Santa are good friends. We are going to have the party in my back yard. We are going to have a snowball fight too. I’m going to have so much fun. – Kaylie Asher If Santa had to move his toyshop I think he would move it to a forest because some times it is cold and all of the reindeer could play with all of the other animals. The forest has a bunch of trees so no one could see Santa’s toyshop. That is a good spot. – Caison Jelinek Once upon a time Santa needed to move his toyshop. I wondered why he wants to move his toyshop. So I thought he could move between and me Gracyn’s Santa’s Reindeer house because I think the Elementary students made paper reindeer and then hung the huge pieces of artwork were in classrooms elves could use help and I and hallways throughout the school. Legend of Rudolph WAVERLY – There was a story that stated that Rudolph’s character was created by a man to console his daughter on the news of her mother dying from a terminal disease. However, it is not so. It is said that Rudolph was created purely for commercial purpose by a Montgomery Ward Copywriter who came up with the design of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. It is said that he tested the skeleton of Rudolph’s character on his own daughter to ensure that Rudolph would appeal to children. The story of Rudolph’s character began to take form when the Chicago-based Montgomery Ward company asked one of its employees, Robert L. May to come with a Christmas story as a promotional gimmick. May, who was known for his limericks and stories, began developing the story and used the reindeer as the protagonist of his story. May is credited for having come up with the name, Rudolph, which is said to be a mix of Rollo and Reginald. There were quite a few controversies regarding Rudolph’s depiction with a glowing red nose. Many people ostracized the portrayal of Rudolph’s red nosed and compared the image to

drunkards and drinking, as people who drank a lot, often had red noses. Barring the controversies, Rudolph’s story and depiction was approved and more than two million booklets of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer were circulated around the world during the 1940’s. Post World War II, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer turned into a comic and was printed commercially. There was a song called ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer developed by Johnny Marks that became one of the bestselling Christmas songs of all time. After the famous song, a television series, starring Rudolph, remained a perennial favorite all around the U.S. Rudolph was one of Santa’s prized reindeers. He wasn’t any ordinary reindeer, and although he was made fun of for his red-nose, he was not regarded as an embarrassment by his family and friends. Legend states that Rudolph was brought up in a well-to-do family and was also a responsible reindeer, who was concerned about his self-esteem. There is an interesting story behind how Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was picked by Santa Claus. When Santa was delivering presents around town, he found a red light emanat-

Legend of the Mistletoe WAVERLY – Also known as the golden bough, mistletoe was held sacred by both the Celtic Druids and the Norseman. Celts believed this parasitic plant held the soul of the host tree, the holy oak. In a special ceremony, the Druid priests would harvest it with a golden sickle making sure it never touched the ground where it’s magical powers would be absorbed back into the earth. The branches were then divided and distributed to the people who used it as a protection from all sorts of evils. Once called ‘Allheal’, it has been used as a folk medicine to heal toothache, measles, and many other ills. The practice of ‘kissing under the mistletoe’ has many legends associated with it. Some say the Druids

dedicated the plant to the Goddess of Love, and this is where the custom comes from. Others claim it came from England, where mistletoe was hung in doorways for good luck. Since only happiness could pass beneath it, enemies would embrace and seal their peace with a kiss of friendship. Scandinavians also considered it the plant of peace, and if enemies met by chance beneath it in the forest, they laid down their arms and maintained a truce until the next day. Even now, if there is armed conflict anywhere in the world, there is usually a cease-fire on Christmas Day, which is probably a custom that has come down from these practices in antiquity. A favorite legend comes from the ancient Norse people. In it, Frigga, wife of the

god Odin, dearly loved her son Balder and took steps to make sure no harm would come to him by earth, fire, water or air. Since mistletoe did not fit into any of these realms, an evil spirit names Loki fashioned an arrow of it and gave it to Balder’s blind brother, Holder. Guided by Loki’s hand, Holder unknowingly shot his brother in the heart, killing him. The legend has several outcomes. In one, Balder is brought back to life. In another, He was sent to the Otherworld with a Viking’s funeral, on a burning ship, to wait the day when He returns to Earth to usher in a new era. In both cases, Frigga swore that mistletoe would never again cause harm; making it a symbol of love and promising to bestow a kiss upon anyone who passed under it.

Legend of the Christmas Carol WAVERLY – The word ‘carol’ is a derivation of the French word ‘caroler’ meaning ‘dancing around in a circle’. Oliver Cromwell who was a Protestant banned the joyous-themed Christmas carols in England and thus,

many old Christmas carols were lost over time. In Victorian era, they were revived again to take over the somber lyrics of the Christian hymns. By the 19th century, Christmas carols became

quite popular again in the United States and England alike. The recent Christmas symbols, such as Santa Claus and reindeer found their place in later Christmas carols too.

Eagle fifth graders take on role of elves Second graders describe EAGLE – Fifth grade students in Roxane Micek’s class at Eagle Elementary were asked to describe their role as an elf. Here is a sample of their answers. If I were an elf, I would look like: If I were an elf I would be dressed in all red with a red hat with a white strip at the bottom of the hat and I would have brown hair, blue eyes, and a gig smile. I would also have a white shawl. Like Elf on the Shelf. – Rylie Connelly If I were on elf I would wear a Christmas dress and pigtails and two red bows. Also I would have to shrink. I would most likely look like any other girl elf, but not the real Christmassy version. – Maci Easton If I were an elf I would have a small little hat with red and green on it and little boots with red and green, have pointy ears, plus white suspenders. – Jace Adams If I were an elf I would look like any elf. I would have suspenders, stocking hat and pointed shoes, strong boys, long wavy brown hair, and a pair of pointy ears. I would remarkably handsome with my sea green eyes and tan skin and my energy only a true elf could possess. – Nathan Rash If I was an elf I would have pointy ears, red checks. I also would have a nice green and red hat with a bell on it. I think it would look great. – Darcy Suhr If I were an elf I would wear a red hat and a green shirt and flashing shoes so I would stand out. And I would wear a gold watch so I was always on time. – Hogan Wingrove If I were an elf I would look like a dork because I would have a pointy hat with green, white and red suspenders and green with yellow pointy shoes. – Anthony Ruelas

My job as an elf would be… My job would be to make all the cool toys like Lagos and Nerf guns, ya know that stuff. Oh, and feed the reindeer because I love toys. – Wyatt Drake My job would be to cook for the other elves and to clean up their plates because I like to cook. – Haven Senjem My job in the North Pole would be to make cookies because I make good cookies. Connor Jensen My job at the North Pole would be a toy maker or Santa’s helper. A toy maker because I like to make kids happy and because I like to fix toys. I would I like to be a Santa’s helper because I would go on his sleigh and I would go on secret missions and I would get to see all of the characters like the Tooth Fairy. –Amelia Kehn My job would be to make hot cocoa for Santa and all the other elves. I would make the best chocolate milk. Then I would put three tiny marshmallows into it then heat it up for everyone. I would do this so people could stay warm. – Jacob Stroh My job in the North Pole would be to make kids get excited with the new toys they get. I would do mostly stuffed animals and sewing clothes, blankets and pillowcases. – Brooke Luedders My job at the North Pole would be to feed the reindeer and wrap presents. Feed the reindeer because I want to see how they eat and what the food looks like. Wrap presents because I would become an expert at wrapping presents. Maybe I could learn to do it with my eyes closed. Another reason for wrapping present is I could pick the wrapping paper. – Kileen Newell My job at the North Pole would be an artist because I’m really good at art and I

could draw or paint a picture or model of a toy for the elves to get ideas of a toy to make or if they don’t know what a toy looks like I could draw or paint a picture or model to look off of. – Alizae Martinez If the elves went on strike, what would happen to Christmas…. If the elves went on strike what I would do was all the kids in the United Stats whose dad or mom was a solider, I would go around the United States and pick those soldiers up and bring them back to their families. So for Christmas they can celebrate with their whole family not without your parent. So then I wouldn’t ruined Christmas. – Maci Steckelberg If the elves went on strike I think Christmas would not happen, but I bet Santa would hire new elves or he would be making the presents himself. – Caiden Helzer If the elves when on strike it would be cause they were tired of making toys every day and wanted a break and better conditions and have Santa help out. – Justin Lilja If the elves strike I would feel bad because Santa will have to try everything himself. It will probably be hard and he will probably be kind of sad and kind of mad because he didn’t get his presents finished and be-

cause the elves strike. – Juan Alferez If the elves went on strike, I think Christmas will be held back for like two days or maybe one day because Santa is pretty good at talking the elves into stuff so I think that Christmas won’t end. – Lily Miller If the elves went on strike I think all the toys would all get behind schedule and no one would be there to take care of the reindeer, like me. Therefore Christmas would kind of take a downfall and there would be no more Christmas spirit. – Katyn Kappler Of the elves went on strike I’d would get very mad and fire someone and say get back to work. And the toys would behind schedule and Christmas would be ruined and people will be disappointed and Christmas will be horrible. – Peyton Kumland

moving santa’s toyshop WAVERLY – Second grade students in Terese Brown’s class at Hamlow Elementary were asked to relocate santas workshop. Here is a sample of their answers. If Santa had to move his toyshop, I would pick my house because I can have, like, a million toys. I could see all the reindeer, and I could tell Santa my Christmas list. It would be awesome. – Reid Robinson If Santa had to move his toyshop, he should move it across the street from my house. I could tell him my Christmas list. – Ben Michael If Santa had to move his toyshop, I think it should be in my backyard, because there is a lot of room in my backyard. It would be a good place for him, and I think he would have a great time there because I would entertain him so he won’t be board. I would get the most presents of all the boys and girls in the town. But my mom and dad will have to make more dinner for the family. – Parker Christiansen If Santa had to move his toyshop, it would be on an iceberg because it is cold, just like he would like. – Sam Bogle If Santa had to move his toyshop, it would be in the South Pole, because it’s negative 100 degrees. And it is the right temperature for the reindeer. – Hayden Guthard. If Santa had to move his toyshop, he should build it at my house because I live in the country. I can help him and his elves work. He can

Second graders make Christmas cookies WAVERLY – Second grade students in Missy Schere’s class at Hamlow Elementary were asked to describe how to make Christmas cookies. Here is a sample of their answers. The ingredients you would probably need to make for the cookie monster. 2 1/2 cups of sugar, 2 cups of flour. It depends on how many cookies you make. One bottle of blue food coloring, 1 bag of M&Ms, water, milk. Then put all the ingredients in a bowl. Then put it in the oven at 300 degrees. Then get a cookie cutter and cut them. – Allison Brandl Here is the world’s best cookie recipe. Ingredients for snicker doodle cookie: 15 chocolate chips, green frosting, two hot tamales or two red jelly beans. A little candy cane, one pinch of sugar, 2 green Skittles, How to make the cookies. Cook the cookie dough in the oven. Cook the cookies at 178 degrees for 30 minutes after they are done. Use the green frosting to make a Christmas tree. Then break the candy cane into

pieces. Then put the little pieces on the frosting tree. Then put the 15 chocolate chips right next to the little pieces of candy cane. Sprinkle with sugar. – Chase McInteer To make the best Christmas cookies I will use eggs, flower, sugar, 1/2 cup vanilla. Poor it on a pan. Put the pan in the oven for ten minutes then put in on a plate and let’s eat them. – Matthew Larson Cookies you would need dough of sugar M&Ms, oatmeal, flavor. I would bake it for ten minutes. When its done I will put some more M&Ms and sugar. Then I would put kisses on top. Then I would bake it some more. When it’s done I will put it on a plate. Then I will leave on plate for Santa to eat. This is called M&M Supreme. – Royce Klucas If I made the best cookie it would have strawberry frosting, min chips swirls eight inches long. It would have M&S, Butterfinger pieces. The cookie would be made of chocolate with lines of cara-

mel. – Vincent Jeffries I would use sugar, flour, oil, sprinkles, flavor, chocolate chips, frosting. Name is perclolfaglisitcexpeydoship. Bake in oven 15 minutes. Set a timer for 15 minutes. – Tyler Pecks To make the best cookie in the world you would need sugar, flour, sprinkles, chocolate chips, some sugar. Put in the oven for 14 minutes for six degrees. – Fredric Bush This is the way that I would make the world’s best Christmas cookies. These are the ingredients you need: chocolates, fudge chocolate chip cookie dough. Lots and lots of sprinkles. Lots and lots and lots of Christmas colored frosting. Last but not least lots of while chocolate chips. Oh, one more thing. An oven and pan. Step one get your cookie dough and put it on the pan in little chucks. Step two put it in the oven for 25 minutes at 200 degrees. Stop three when your are cookies are done safety take them out. Step four put frosting on top of your cookies. Step five put your toppings on top of

your cookies. Then you have the world’s best cookies – Danica Lindquist This is how you make the world’s best cookie. You first make the dough. You put flour in a bowl, then you put water in it. Then four teaspoons sugar. You put it in the sun, then you wait 30 minutes. When 30 minutes is over, put a cookie cutter in the dough. If the dough is not flat, flatten it, then put chocolate sprinkles on it. Then cook it for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes is up, put frosting on it. Eat it up. – Keaton Bowker This is how you make the Super Star Supreme cookie. First you get a bowl, a bag of sugar, a teacup and oil and milk and a mixer. Then you get the bowl you put the milk in the bowl and add eggs. Then mix it up and put the two gags of sugar in while you are mixing it up you take the teacup you put nine teacups of oil in and put one gallon in the bowl and bake it one hour and 25 minutes. – DJ VanAmerongen

Toy shop moved by second graders WAVERLY – Second grade students in Donice Kaspar’s class at Hamlow Elementary were asked to relocate santas workshop. Here is a sample of their answers. If Santa had to move his toyshop he would make one in the city. If someone came in Santa would say ‘get out’ and if they do not reindeer will charge at the person. That is the attack system. You will not want to come only if you’re with kids. It is only open in December to Christmas Eve at 9 a.m. so Santa can deliver the presents to the kids. – Brandon Groth If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it to the forest because there would be a black bear and Santa could ride on it. Santa slipped on a garter snake and fell on the ground. A skunk sprayed him. Whoops the skunk thought. Maybe Santa should move back to the North Pole the animals thought. – Emily Schneider If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it on a gigantic cloud so on Christmas it could rain presents. These would be the problems. If the cloud sent down

rain the cloud would collapse and Santa’s toyshop would fall in two. The birds would steal the presents from Santa. The elves would get into the mischief and fall off the cloud. – Caleb McCormick If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it to Africa. For a little help he would hire a cheetah and a gazelle to wrap presents for Santa so Christmas would come every year. But that would sound good to me. If Santa moved his toyshop where would you want it move to? – Chase Schmaizl If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it to Nebraska so the children in Nebraska would get toys every day. He would move by my house. I would throw my old toys away in the garbage to get new toys. On second thought Santa should stay at the North Pole but I hope the cold weather will change. – Isabel Hummel If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it to a giant enormous shell. Santa said it would be the biggest shell in the world. It would be surrounded by salty water. There would be sharks to

protect it. Mrs. Claus thought it would be scary because there might be a giant crab. Ho Ho, good night to all and be a good boy and girl. – Derek Sutter If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it to the ocean. The dolphins would help Santa. A shark can help Santa. The toyshop would have coral all over the place. The colors would look fantastic with the colorful toys I bet. The seahorse can help by wrapping the toys with his tail. I think Santa would have a good time there. – Camryn Happold If Santa had to move his toyshop he would move it to Waverly to that he would be closer to the Waverly kids. But not to the others unfortunately for Santa cause he would still have to go really far. – Trevor Brinkman If Santa had to move his toyshop he would go to Antarctica because his workshop broke. In Antarctica he would call the polar bear to help him. I think that Santa would thank you for the help. I also think that Santa will be proud of that idea. – Anna Stakhnyuk

Legend of the Nutcracker WAVERLY – The nutcracker’s origin comes from the Erzgebirge region of Germany. These dolls were first made in the 1700s, due to the ample supply of wood and depleting supply of metal. Carving these intricate wooden nutcrackers became the livelihood of the people of the Erzgebirge region. Today, the German nutcracker is a valued possession and collectible over all others. It takes 130 steps to create this magnificent piece of art. One wonders as to why the dolls don’t have a smile

on their faces. The answer is that the people inculcated their everyday hardships into the dolls that they created. Their lives were hard, the working conditions bad and they did not get paid well. The book ‘The Legend of the Nutcracker and Traditions of the Erzgebige’, written by Ken Althoff, speaks of an old German folktale about how the nutcracker came into being. The story stated that there was a farmer who offered a reward to anyone who could help him crack the walnuts that grew on his

tree. A carpenter told him to saw the nut in half while a soldier told him to shoot the nut. It was finally a puppet maker who came along with a beautiful puppet, made of wood and painted in bright colors, which had strong jaws that could be used to crack the walnuts. The farmer rewarded him by giving him his own workshop. In Germany, it is also said that nutcrackers bring good luck and protect the house. They are said to keep evil at bay and protect the people of the house.

Christmas Folklore WAVERLY – Superstition and folklore about the Christmas season seems endless. Here’s a sampling: - Animals will all kneel down as the Holy Night arrives; - Bees hum the ‘100th psalm’ on Christmas Eve; - A windy Christmas will bring good luck; - A person born on Christ-

mas Day can see the Little People; - A cricket on the hearth brings good luck; - Opening all doors of the house at midnight allows evil spirits to depart; - You will have one lucky month for each Christmas pudding you sample; - The tree must be taken down by Twelfth Night or

bad luck will follow; - ‘If Christmas on a Sunday be, a windy winter we shall see’; - ’Hours of sun on Christmas Day, so many frosts in the month of May’; - The Twelve Days of Christmas will predict each month’s weather for the coming year.

Fourth graders describe how to make a snowman WAVERLY – Fourth grade students in Kelly Masters class at Waverly Intermediate School describe the process of making a snowman. Here is a sample of their answers. There are five steps in making a snowman. First collect snow. Next make a big ball of snow. Then make a smaller snowball, not much smaller. After that take a small snowball for the head. Finally get a hat, five rocks, a scarf, two sticks, and a carrot. – Kemper Reed The first steps in building a snowman is step 1: you start with a snowball and keep on rolling it until you can barely push it any more. P.S. Roll three of these balls. Step 2: Find two sticks and make them the length you want, then stick them in the side of the snowman. Step 3: Get a scarf that is OK with

your parents to use on the snowman. Step 4: Get a giant carrot and put it as the nose. Step 5: The last step get about 12 of the same colored rocks and put in as the eyes, nose, mouth, and buttons. – Alanea Babb How to make a snowman: Step 1: Roll up the first ball for the bottom. Step 2: Roll up the second ball for the middle. Step 3: Roll up the third ball for the top. Step 4: Put a carrot for the nose. Step 5: Put some buttons in the middle. Step 6: Get some sticks for the arms. Step 7: Get a scarf, mittens, and a hat. – Braydon Waller Step 1: Make sure snow outside is very fluffy, than grab a carrot, 11 black rocks, or 11 buttons and a hat or scarf. Step 2: Make a ball of snow then roll it in the snow live you are driving a car

until it gets really big then just set it were your snowman’s going to be. Step 3: Do the exact same thing in step two but make the ball a bit smaller. Step 4: Then do the exact same thing as step 3 but make it smaller. Step 4: finally put all three balls on top of each other, small on top, medium in the middle and large at the bottom. Then put the carrot on the small ball for a nose then put two eyes from the black rocks or buttons then put one rock or button on the middle of you medium ball, then two rocks or buttons on the large ball then add as many rocks and buttons on the small ball for a mouth then add a hat, scarf or both, Then grab two sticks and put it in the medium ball and you got a brand new snowman. – Hayden Knickerbocker

Fourth graders write Christmas poems WAVERLY – Fourth grade students in Christine Sears’ class at Waverly Intermediate School were asked to write a poem about Christmas. Here is a sample of their answers. Reindeer are rarely ever seen on Christmas Eve. Enjoy all the presents you receive from Santa. In your free time give something to charity; some people aren’t as lucky as you. Never stop believing in yourself. Don’t be greedy; some kids might only get two presents. Exciting to wake up to a bunch of gifts. Exiting to get new presents. Ribbons around the Christmas tree. - By Paige Radenslaben Snowflakes falling from white fluffy marshmallows in the sky.

WAVERLY – Second grade students in Donice Kaspar’s class at Hamlow Elementary were asked how they would celebrate Rudolph’s 50th birthday? Here is a sample of their answers. I am going to celebrate Rudolph’s birthday by getting carrots and I’ll get wrapping paper with Rudolph’s face on it and I’ll put a red ribbon too and then I’d make a present for Rudolph. I’ll make another present but with decorations and when he opens it, it will blow out and his whole workshop and decorations will make it a big celebration. Then when Rudolph comes in he’ll be like ‘what’? – Nathan Guenthner I would celebrate Rudolph’s birthday by getting him a present like a new saddle with apple and red stripes. Rudolph, your noise is so bright. I’m glad Santa chose you to lead. I think you should have an apple so why don’t you have one. – Brody Saathoff Rudolph, its your birthday are you are 50 years old. If I saw you I would give you a lighting nose so we can see you in the night. If you like Christmas you can write a letter to Santa and tell him what you would get for him. He might send you a letter so you will be happy and maybe would give you something. Happy birthday. – Aden Wiggins If Rudolph were 50 I would send him an invitation to come to Waverly and take Christmas off. If he sends a letter back that says he’ll come we’ll have to get ready. My mom Cheri will make a carrot cake and for the candles she’ll stick real
