Users can subscribe to the site to be notified of changes and other service efforts taking place in the community. An important note: In the process of developing this guide, every effort was made to verify the information provided. However, it is important to contact each agency to confirm the services available and the requirements to access services.

Get Help — Even If Your Loved One Won’t We all know how difficult it is to “make” someone get help if that person doesn’t feel he or she is ready for help. You may have a mother who gambles too much, but tells you it is just for fun. You may have a son who drinks too much, and tells you it is just a bunch of kids partying. You may have a brother that gets very angry and can’t maintain a job.

loved one to get help in a compassionate and constructive way. The goal is to help the entire family be happy and healthy.

Use the following tips to find a counselor to help you cope with a family member who has a mental illness or substance abuse problem:

What do you do in these situations? If you say something —anything— you may make your family member angry. You might be worried that he or she will not speak to you again. These occurrences begin to feel like an every day part of your life, putting a tremendous amount of worry and stress on you as a concerned family member. Feelings of helplessness begin to make you feel anxious, defeated and perhaps depressed.

• If you have insurance, check for a list of covered providers. If not, look for a counseling agency that offers sliding fees. Call the agency to ask about fees and appointment availability. Ask if the counselor has experience and training to help with the problem you are facing.

beneficial to your ongoing relationship with your loved one. Even more, a counselor can assist you in exploring ways to encourage your

• Finally, find comfort in the fact that you have support, even though your loved one does not seek help at this time.

• The client/counselor “match” is very important. Navigating to the Right Resource at the Right Time Have you ever needed help through a crisis? Finding the right resources to meet your specific needs is complicated. The resources are there, but winding your way through a maze of organizations, programs, and eligibility criteria can be overwhelming.

Energy assistance programs are available to help throughout the coldest months of the year, when gas bills typically increase dramatically. Income-based housing programs are often prioritized to those that have a disability or are over age 60.

Start with a good understanding of what you need, as well as your ability to stabilize beyond the crisis.

• What resources can help over time? Do you have a new medical condition that requires on-going care or expensive medications? Physician’s offices may have access to samples, and most pharmaceutical companies have assistance programs available. Are you eligible for food stamps, medical coverage or child care assistance? Most State Health and Human Services Department have developed application processes that screen individuals and families for multiple programs with one application. Most applications are available online as well.

• Do you have income? Many organizations help with rent and utilities only on a onetime basis. To qualify for onetime assistance you will need to show you can afford rent, utilities and all other living expenses going forward. Your paystubs and records of other sources of income are typically required.
