mere month to go. New businesses have started up, other businesses have expanded, and most current businesses are staying the course, commented Smith. Not only does SCIA help bring business to town, but also works hard at promoting the current businesses. Smith said this is done through various events, including the annual Ag Banquet, Sno-Dough, Wine Walk, Shenfest, Thursday at the Flatirons, and one of the more recent events, the Wabash Trace Marathon. “The marathon expansion has been a great success for us. We get half of the profits. The other half is split by Imogene, Malvern and the Trace organization,” said Smith. “The beauty of the race is that it’s outside money coming in, and, the marathon has the potential for growth each year. On top of that, when participants see the beauty of the Trace, it generates tourism.” However, Smith said it’s SCIA memberships that provide much business marketing and help throughout every year, and help support city projects. “SCIA helped pay for Christmas lights,” said Smith. “Last year we helped add more icicle Christmas lights to the downtown trees. We have the most beautiful lights of any town – especially towns our size. We’ve decided we want to help maintain a beautiful downtown Shenandoah at Christmas time.” After Hours events, and Chamber Coffees at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays occur at various businesses throughout the year,

put on by SCIA, as well as contests, coupons, and fun events, like the recent Throwback Thursday event where people were encouraged to dress like years past and stores were encouraged to offer ‘throwback’ prices. Membership costs vary by type of organization. Basic business memberships are $220.50 per year with associate individual memberships at $63.50. “Our mission is to improve business vitality and expand high-paying opportunities and support major projects.” Holiday related events for SCIA included the annual Sno-Dough sale, which started at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 in the DelMonico Room. Specialty printed SnoDough can be used at Shenandoah businesses. One-hundred dollars worth of Sno-Dough could have been purchased last week for $80. The Night the Lights Come On event, held the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the Flatiron each year, will take place on Nov. 29 this year. Stores will be open until 7 p.m.; there will be free horsedrawn carriage rides from 3 to 5 p.m.; Santa and live reindeer from 3 to 5 p.m.; the lights countdown at 5:30 p.m. the Hanging of the Greens with cookies, cider and Mrs. Claus at 5:45 and the firemen’s soup and pie supper from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Safety Center. On top of that SCIA hosts a Santa’s Workshop at the Everly Brothers Childhood Home Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. starting Dec. 6 until Christmas.
