Hearing sound is obviously different from listening music. When various sounds are composed and state of audience is set, then the circumstance shall become a performance. As an architect, we seek to find the profile angle of approaching the nature; To create the architecture as the instrument. To invite the nature to be the musician. To define the whole place as the cosmic theatre. By witnessing the nature performance, body would be healed and the soul would be purged. And it is obviously different from merely observing the pure nature.

The Hotel design strategy is to enhance the outdoor sense of living. The three elements of hotel building - corridor, guest room, and balcony are reconsidered as separated elements. The corridor creates the sense of a hanging walkway, while the gap between the guest room is preserved for a private-nature space for each room. The balcony is lowered from the room to enlarge the vision from the room and create unique sense of outdoor pavilion.

Since the Vietnam War was over in late 70s, the country suddenly joined the global capitalism caravan. Dramatic urbanization and economic growth drove food industry to be overcapacity-grown. Nowadays, food crisis awareness is controversially urges among Vietnamese society. Cuchi Organic Eco Farm is masterplan design proposal for 600-Hectares-decommissioned rubber plantation in Cuchi, Vietnam. The client acquired the land and aimed to transform the underutilized site to be an organic food production farm provided from animal feed, livestock, fruit, and vegetation in the closed-cycle operation. The first phase of 50 Ha. is an agro-tourism destination offering visitors farm-to-table meals and agricultural programming. The scheme involves various “nodes which highlight elements of the farming process, including livestock and food preparation. The client will offer classes organized around these nodes on topics such as the production of organic fertilizer and harvesting. holistic experience of food cycle. The core idea of the organic approach is visualized in the main water reservoir area where plants and livestock meet. The food cycle observation walkway offers visitor to explore the organic food production process from cradle to cradle by overlooking to the farm from above and provide all information along the way. To begin with, water takes a major part for plantation to grow, some plants like corn and grass are fed to the animals, then the digested foods are converted to be a manure. The animals' excrements are sent to fermented area to create natural fertilizer for plants. Then the organic process loop continues, fertilizer is returened to the field to water the plants again.

As a Thai-Chinese tradition, Son stays with parents and extends his own family under the same roof with parents, while daughter moves to husband's place after a marriage. This project was originally briefed for the family of seven; father, mother, grandmother, two sons, and two daughters, at the early design stage and was planned for two sons' families that will be stayed together later in the future. The project is located in Soi Ngamvongvarn 47, a peaceful environment with family-relative neighbors. The main design concept is to create space for a future extending family, relationship between three generations is the key to physical appearance of the design. Since there will be three families in a house, each family should have both private space and public area for gathering with all members. The connection among three families is reflected in architecture masses which has 3 major parts, these masses are connected by the conceptual line from roofs' slope which creates the feeling of a family under the same roof.

Cha-am beach is long known for a weekend destination. It is where the owner of this project spent their childhood in and a lot of memorable moments happened. The site accommodates 3 houses. The oldest one was constructed from wood in traditional Thai gingerbread house style which was later moved and reassembled on concrete pillars on the site. The second house was built around the 70s. Like typical houses in that period, it was built with concrete on the first floor and wooden structure on the upper level. Roof was designed to be a low-angle gable roof with long overhanging length on both sides, recalling the identity of the 70s house. The third house came the latest. It was influenced by modernist architecture. However, the house could not last for long because of the heavy rain and salty air from the sea. Nowadays, after their grandparents have passed away, the owners occasionally come to visit the site. This provokes the owners to restore the place and bring back old memories and to pass on to the next generations. As architects, we proposed to connect generations through the renewal of architectures which gradually change over time. The first house is going to be preserved. Many decorative elements are still in well condition, reflecting the craftmanship from almost a century. The second house has 2 major issues - small living area and poor ventilation. By rearranging the plan, a larger living area is designed to connect to the extension house which will replace the thrid house after domolition. The extension part will be continuing order and proportion of the second house while up-to-date materials and details will be applied to represent the modern living. The diagram shows designing processes that will be used with each buildings.

Material Informed Formwork Geometry ETH ZĂźrich, Switzerland Academic Project Team MAS ETH DFAB Thesis 2020 Chanon Techathuvanun Yu-Hung Chiu Joris Burger Dr. Ena Lloret-Fritschi Dr. Timothy Wrangler

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) of formwork for concrete has the potential to realize construction components with structurally optimized geometry, which also can reduce the amount of concrete used and improve construction sustainability. Several previous researches show the feasibility of building using this novel technique. However, new challenges (compared to a traditional concrete construction process) have to be addressed: breaks frequently happened to the formworks during the casting because of lateral concrete pressure. This thesis will investigate different formwork geometries and patterns to expand knowledge on the breakage behavior of formworks when subjected to lateral concrete pressure. Meanwhile, the aim is to improve formwork stability and explore formwork surface aesthetic by applying parametric geometries and patterns. The empirical data from findings will be applied to the Eggshell project to determine concrete filling rate without creating breakage.

Scope of work Design and research Experimental design Fabrication

The research presented in this thesis is embedded in the Eggshell project which aims to develop a system that does not rely on counter pressure on the formwork to reduce printing time and material use. In Eggshell, FDM formwork is printed while a fast-hardening concrete is cast into it in a continuous process. This thesis will focus on another casting approach by printing the completed formwork first, then filling concrete with controlled filling rates to the formwork in one go.

Methodology The whole workflow is a cycle that intends to feed the findings from the formwork printing and casting test to the initial step, design. Fabricate

Demonstrator 01 Transforming the geometries from a 16-segment polygon to a square shape, the demostrator 01 was designed to express the findings by changing from the highest resistance at the bottom to the lowest on top. Moreover, the casting rates can be calculated from the designed geometries alonged with concrete hydration time, and maximum casting height in order to cast continuously without any additional support. A slightly pattern is introduced to this demonstrator only to eliminate the deformation while making a minimal effect on the surface. Geometry Transformation Low Resistance

High Resistance

Using automated filling process developed by SDC- Sacac, the demonstrator01 was simplified to cast with 3 filling rates due to the limitation at the moment. There was a small breakage due to the inconsistency of hydration time.

Casting process

Project 05 - Material Informed Formwork Geometry

Page 041

Demonstrator 02 This prototype was developed from the demonstrator 1, all base geometries were the same. In addition, it was optimized with a pattern so that the formwork has more resistance to the pressure. The deeper pattern unit was designed to be in the larger cross-section area geometries and gradient to the more shallow pattern in smaller geometries as it can take higher casting height before the breakage.

Pattern generation

The casting process has been done manually by mixing concrete with accelerator in every 5 minutes. By this process, filling rates can be used precisely according to the breakage calculation. However, it takes much longer time to cast the whole formwork, (1:10 h for demonstrator 01, 5:40 h for demonstrator 02), as the hydration time is 50 minutes long while the first demonstrator is mixed to hydrate within 4 minutes.

Design Methodology Connection - Starting the project with some deep investigations using Fused Deposition Modeling. Various types of joints were explored and investigated with bamboo, limitations were discoverd as follow; the minimal angle or the maximum number of bamboo rods in a bundling section. Because of its versatility, one of the major challenges using bamboo was how to lock it to the node. Nodes were defined into 3 families - the Star node, the Bundling node and the Base node. Each group should adapt itself to integrate single or stacks of bamboo, wires for structural reinforcement or joint to joint connection for assembly purposes.

Panels with a higher angle will have larger openings to reduce the wind load while panels that lie in the horizontal direction will have more subdividing iterations for providing shades. The total panel area has to match with a proper amount of printing time.

Top Layer Fabric Bottom Layer

Printing Technique - After testing different ways to print, the best solution was to print all layers at the same speed (printing too slow, nozzle melts the fabric while printing too fast, filament does not merge with the fabric). Adding more height to the top layer helps strengthen the connection and reinforce the panel. At the bottom layer, printing two layers are necessary to confirm that the fabric surface is flat.

The resort contains 3 types of rooms. Every room faces a panoramic view of Sangkhlaburi. The villas, inspired by the layout of Mon's village, are scattered around an open space, creating a public area. The interior functions are devided by split floor levels with a large open area added for multi-purpose uses, similar to the Mon's traditional house, creating a local atmosphere.
