Dyeing for Peace Psychedelic hattas for love

This tutorial was inspired by seeing both Palestinians and Israelis wearing coloured hattas during my stay in Palestine. This prompted the idea of the Peace Bearing Hatta. Go ahead – make it to wear it, or give it away as a cool present. Spread the love! If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me at noor@skin-online.com.

2 Collect it. The things you need are: • 100% cotton clean hatta – synthetics don’t absorb dye • Dylon Cold Dye in your favourite colours • Duct tape • Plastic bags (optional) • Scissors and a blade • A stick for mixing • Salt and sodium carbonate • Measuring cup and a plastic cup • Big bucket • A tablespoon • Water (cold & warm) • Plastic gloves (optional)

Fold it. Fold the hatta diagonally in half and bring all three corners together. Hold the opposite end and scrunch the entire length of the hatta.

3

4

Tie it. Wrap the hatta with duct tape wherever you don’t want the dye to go. You can also wrap it with plastic bags first, then again with the duct tape.

Wet it. Dampen the hatta, squeezing out all the excess water. And while you’re at the sink, fill the big bucket with enough cold water to cover your hatta.

5

6

Mix it. Pierce a packet of dye with scissors, dump it in a cup with one pint of warm water and stir with a stick until it completely disolves. Wear plastic gloves if you want.

Add it. Mix the dye into the big bucket of cold water. Add three tablespoons of salt and one tablespoon of sodium carbonate – they help make the dye adhere to the fabric. Stir well.

7

4

Dip it. Dip the hatta into the bucket of colour. Agitate for the first ten minutes, frequently lifting it out of dye to – wow, check out the colour! Let it soak for an hour.

Remove it. Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear. Repeate steps 5-7 with different colours, dipping different areas of of the hatta each time you add a colour. Rinse it. Unwrap it. Dry it. Wrap it. Wear it.

Palette: * Foundation * White powder foundation * Eyeliner - Navy blue - Light blue * Fluorescent liquid eyeliner * Eyeshadow: - Dark green - Light green - Purple - Yellow * Yellow sparkle gel * White lipstick

Skin designer takes you under the sea for the coolest Halloween costume ever. Use your favourite colours and fix your hair to match. Leave everyone gasping for oxygen! Cover your face with a foundation of your skin tone until it’s an even shade of colour. Go over the foundation with white powder making sure to cover every inch.

Use a white lipstick on your mouth and eyebrows. Pucker-up, then make an outline of your face with a blue pencil; make sure to move into the hollow of your cheeks.

Fill in the area between the hairline and halfway to the blue outline with a dark green shade. Leave room for the lighter green shade to fill in the second half.

113

From the end of your brow line down to the middle of your nose, fill with a metallic purple to define the eyes. Use yellow eyeshadow to define the fish cheeks.

Add yellow sparkle gel to the green area to create a scaly fish effect. Draw a thick blue line under the eyes to make them (figuratively) pop out of your head.

And to my favourite part: use a fluorescent blue to fill the middle of the lips. Use the same colour to add a curvaceous line under the eyes to connect the whole look.

To perfect the look, wear blue or green contacts (if your eyes aren’t already aquatic) and style your hair to the shape of your favourite water dweller – let it have a tail and some fins. Swim into your Halloween party puckered-up for maximum effect! Hopefully your fish memory will help you forget where you learned this by the time you scrub off the make-up...

If anyone tries it for Halloween please take pictures and e-mail them to noor@skin-online.com. They maybe used in our next November issue. Try it out and add some splash to the party filled with the usual old characters! 115
