ABOUT Kamfers Dam: ) It is one of only four places in Africa where the lesser flamingo breeds. ) The dam is currently the only breeding locality for lesser flamingos in South Africa. ) Kamfers Dam supports the largest permanent population of lesser flamingos in Southern Africa, with at times up to an estimated 60 000 individuals (comprising more than 50% of the southern African population). ) Breeding on this island takes place from October through to April. ) Kamfers Dam’s flamingos have huge ecotourism and economic value for the city of Kimberley. Many businesses use the flamingo in their logos, and people come from across the country to see the birds. ) The city has a Flamingo School, Flamingo Real Estate, Flamingo Race Course, Flamingo Casino and a Flamingos netball team. Flamingos are also included in the emblems of the Sol Plaatje Municipality and the Frances Baard District Municipality.
BESIDES fixing the blocked sewerage pipe, the swamped area needs to be rehabilitated. The overhead powerlines need to be retrofitted with effective bird diverters and light emitting flappers immediately for visibility at night and orange marker balls that are used to warn aircraft. These are the recommendations of Tania Anderson, manager of the Save the Flamingo campaign. She responded to the news that dozens of dead flamingos were discovered close to the Kamfers Dam in Homestead last weekend. They were found without any visible scars or marks on them. A delegation visited the site last week and called for an investigation
to be done. Upon investigation, it was found that rocks had caused a blockage in one of the chambers of the pipes leading to the Homevale Waste Water Treatment Plant which then resulted in a back-up. The water quality of the toxic swamp will be tested and a post mortem of the flamingos will be done. “It will be interesting to see what the cause of death was. One theory was that the flamingos had collided with overhead powerlines above the swamp. If this is true, then marks from the impact with the cables should be evident on the flamingos,” Anderson said. According to her, the planned construction of a new flamingo breeding island can only be done when the water level in the dam is constant and
the water quality of the sewage from the treatment plant is good enough to pump elsewhere. “It is time to get the treatment plant functioning maintained. There is no time to waste,” she said. According to Save the Flamingo, the birds’ breeding is in serious trouble. Very poorly treated sewage from a dysfunctional sewage works is flooding into it and a large housing development has been proposed near the area. The quality of the water in the dam has been in the news continuously with an on-going increase in sewage effluent being released into the Kamfers Dam. Patrick Mabilo, MEC for Environment and Nature Conservation, said he was extremely concerned by
these deaths. “I have promptly deployed a team from the department which consisted of the Green Scorpions and aquatic scientist to do a site inspection and to take water samples and have a look at the dead flamingos. “It is our understanding that when you release water from a treatment plant, it must meet certain water standards that will not harm the ecological integrity of the eco-system and will not allow nitrification or eutrophication to take place. “We are part of the conservation community that is looking at efforts that are geared towards encouraging the lesser flamingos to thrive and breed in the Kamfers Dam. “We will do everything in our power to avoid fatalities of our species like the flamingos,” said Mabilo.

The South African Police Service invites applications for Enlistment in the Basic Police Development Learning Programme from young, energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit individuals, dedicated to serving their country by pursuing a career in policing. Preference will be given to applicants who are in possession of at least a light vehicle driver’s licence. Applicants should be within the mass and height restriction. Height: Males: Not shorter than 1.6m; females: Not shorter than 1.55m. Body Mass Index of less than 30/waist circumference ≤ 102cm (males) and ≤ 88cm (females). Basic Police Development Learning Programme
Selected applicants will participate in a Basic Police Development Learning Programme (hereafter referred to as “the Programme”) for a period of 24 (twenty-four) months. The Programme will consist of three phases: • Academy Phase: Ten months’ training at a designated SAPS Academy • Field Police Development Phase: Twelve months’ training at a designated Field Police Development police station • Integrated Assessment Phase: Two months’ assessment at a designated SAPS Academy. During the Academy Phase of the Programme, the Service will provide free training gear, meals and accommodation to the police trainee. During the Field Police Development Phase of the Programme, the police trainee will be responsible for his/her own meals and accommodation. Trainees will also receive medical aid benefits for the duration of the 24-month Basic Training Learning Programme. Upon successful completion of the Basic Training Learning Programme, trainees will be considered for permanent appointment as members of the SAPS. Remuneration (on completion of the training period) will be on the first notch of Band A (currently R123 687 per annum). In addition to this, appointees will receive the applicable service benefits. Core functions: Successful candidates will serve as functional police officials. ALIDA QUINN kon beswaarlik vir ’n lekkerder verjaardaggeskenk gevra het as toe sy en haar seun, Stephen, verlede Dinsdag die sanger-akteur Bobby van Jaarsveld se eregaste was. Hulle het ’n kompetisie gewen om hom na die première van die nuwe Afrikaanse rolprent, As jy sing, te vergesel. Dit is deur die Sondagkoerant Rapport aangebied. Alida, ’n pensioentrekker, het Sondag 63 jaar oud geword. Hulle is die Dinsdagoggend na Johannesburg gevlieg en het die middag ’n driekwartier by hul vyfsterblyplek saam met Bobby en sy vrou, Annatjie, deurgebring en baie foto’s geneem. Daarna is hulle na die Brooklyn-winkelsentrum geneem vir die rolprent waarin heelparty van Suid-Afrika se voorste sangers speel. Vir die Quinns was dit ’n hoogtepunt om op die rooi tapyt te loop met kameras wat om hulle
geflits het. Hulle is na die BBP-gedeelte geneem waar hulle met ’n glasie sjampanje skouers met bekendes in die Afrikaanse musiekbedryf geskuur het. “Daar was ’n paar bekendes soos Bok van Blerk, Arno Jordaan, Robbie Wessels, Juanita du Plessis, Steve Hofmeyr en Karlien van Jaarsveld saam met wie ons foto’s geneem het. “Bobby is eintlik nogal skaam. Hy moes oral vir foto’s glimlag.” “Jy sien hierdie sterre net altyd op die televisie. Almal was baie aangenaam, veral Robbie, Juanita, Annetjie en Karlien,” het Alida gesê. Ook die vroulike hoofspeler, net bekend as Leah, het ’n goeie indruk by hulle gewek. Oor die rolprent self sê hulle dit was “baie nice” en beveel enigiemand aan om dit te gaan kyk. Volgens Stephen, ’n klerk by ’n eiendomsagentskap, was die ervaring ’n belewenis en die grootste prys wat hulle al gewen het.
Hy het namens sy ma vir die kompetisie ingeskryf. “Ek was verbaas toe Rapport my bel en sê hulle het goeie nuus. Ek het gedink: Watter goeie nuus sal hulle nou vir my hê? “Ek het my ma dadelik met die goeie nuus gebel, maar sy was tjoepstil aan die ander kant van die foon. Ek moes naderhand vra: ‘Is jy daar?’ ” Hulle sê dit was egter ietwat teleurstellend dat die aand nie heeltemal verloop het soos hulle voor die tyd ingelig is nie. In die brief wat Stephen geskryf het waarin hy moes motiveer hoekom sy ma moes wen, het hy geskryf sy wou graag Liefling, die musiekblyspel (met Bobby in die hoofrol), op die verhoog gesien het, maar kon dit nie bekostig nie. “Watter groter geskenk kan ek vir haar as ’n verjaardaggeskenk gee as om saam met haar gunsteling-sanger te gaan fliek?” het hy aangevoer.

Misdaad is nie net die verantwoordelikheid van onderwysers, polisie, die regstelsel of korrektiewe dienste nie. Misdaadvoorkoming is almal se verantwoordelikheid. Raak betrokke by die kinders om jou, help hulle om tussen reg en verkeerd te kies en wees ’n voorbeeld om na te streef.

Jan Alleman kan ook foto’s neem VROËER jare was ’n kamera nie vir elke Jan Rap en sy maat beskore nie, maar met die vooruitgang van die tegnologie kan enigeen wat deesdae ’n selfoon besit, hom- of haarself ’n fotograaf noem. Deesdae het omtrent elkeeen ’n kamera. Al besit jy nie ’n kamera met ’n telefotolens nie, is jy steeds ’n fotograaf as jy die kamera wat in bykans alle nuwe selfone gebou word, gebruik. Dit maak van Jan Alleman ’n fotograaf, hoewel ’n amateur. Want daar is nogal ’n groot gaping tussen amateur- en professionele fotograwe. Selfoonkameras was natuurlik nie eens ’n gedagte toe ek ’n kind was nie.
Toe ek 11 jaar oud was, het ek my eerste basiese Kodak-kamera gekry. Ek hou van natuurfoto’s en neem graag blomme en windpompe af. Ek hou ook van aksiefoto’s. Toe ek 33 jaar oud was, het ek besluit om fotografie ernstig te beoefen. Ek het ’n onderneming gehad wat raamwerk gedoen het en die Griekwaland-Wesse Rugbyunie het rugbytruie by my laat raam. Ek vra toe eendag vir die uitvoerende hoof wie vir die unie foto’s neem. “Is jy ’n sportfotograaf?” het hy gevra. “Ja,” het ek dadelik geantwoord. “Kom sien my môre, dan praat ons.” Ons tref toe ’n ooreenkoms en die res is geskiedenis.
Ek het dadelik vir my ’n kamera gekoop, maar net twee weke later is dit uit die winkel gesteel. In daardie tyd
het Canon die Rebel-kamera uitgebring en ek het een aangeskaf. Ek het foto’s geneem dat die biesies bewe. Ek het ’n fotografiekursus gevolg by ’n ou wat inligting van die internet vir ons voorgelees het. Ek het daardie kamera verkoop en vir my Canon se 20d gekoop en troues begin afneem. Ek het later vir my ’n 30d en ’n 70200 mm f2.8 gekoop. Nou was ek vir jou cool en het alles afgeneem: atletiek, rugby, motorfietse, ballet, man, sommer alles. Maar eintlik het ek niks van fotografie af geweet nie. Ek het met Jaco Powell, ’n professionele wildfotograaf, bevriend geraak en daardie dag het ek fotografie ontmoet. Ek het geleer wat ek veel
vroeër al moes geleer het – hoe ’n kamera werk, die verskillende funksies en waarvoor dit gebruik word. Gou het Jaco baie dinge met my gedeel wat die wêreld van fotografie vir my oopgesluit het. Ek lewe vir fotografie en ek raak beter. Vandag verstaan ek ’n kamera en kan ek myself help. Om ’n fotograaf te wees moet jy ’n paar goed weet. Jy moet nederig wees. Jy moet mense, diere, jou omgewing, die skepping en jou God respekteer. Jy moet respek vir jou toerusting hê. Ek hoop jy geniet my rubrieke waarin ek voortaan in Noordkaap ’n bietjie van verskillende aspekte van fotografie gaan vertel.

WILMI DELPORT doen nou dit waarmee haar ouers, Lappies en Terésa Laubscher, byna 30 jaar gelede in Kimberley begin het – tennisafrigting. Hulle het die Lapésatennisskool in 1990 begin. Tennis is hul lewe Ruan Bruwer DIE Lapésa-tennisskool in Kimberley vier in April sy 30ste bestaansjaar en in dié 30 jaar was daar min beter jare as dié van 2013. Twee van die skool se spelers – Anja Lubbe en Kiara Wakeford – is vanjaar met nasionale kleure beloon. Lapésa, ’n kombinasie van Lappies en Terésa Laubscher se name, het ontstaan toe die twee Laubschers en hul drie kinders hierheen verhuis en hulle twee met tennisafrigting begin het. Hulle het by ’n paar klubs afgerig voordat die skool in 1990 ’n blywende tuiste in Lawsonstraat gekry het. Die bane was onbruikbaar en vervalle en die bestaande klubhuis (die Belgrave-klub) is net vir sosiale geleenthede gebruik. Lappies vertel die opknapping van die bane wat hy behartig het, het tot sy konstruksiemaatskappy aanleiding gegee. Lapésa Courts spesialiseer in die ontwikkeling en herstel van tennisbane. ’n Haarsalon, ’n huis en klein houthuisies wat verhuur word, is later op dieselfde perseel gebou. Met Pa en Ma wat heeldag tennis afgerig het, was dit geen verrassing nie dat die kinders, Jako, Johan en Wilmi, ook tennis gespeel het. Al drie het provinsiale kleure verwerf met Wilmi wat ná skool aangehou speel het. Sy is ’n beurs aangebied om in Amerika te studeer en tennis te speel, maar het dit van die hand gewys.

Foto: Verskaf Haar pa het in 2001 opgehou afrig en twee jaar later het sy by hom as tennisbreier oorgeneem. Wilmi sê sy het op skool reeds verkondig sy sou eendag wou afrig. “Ek sal nie sommer vir hulp met afrigting vir my pa vra nie, maar ek gebruik nog baie van die tegnieke en kunsies wat ek by hom geleer het.” Sy, Miemie Lubbe en Jandré Odendaal is al drie gekwalifiseerde tennisafrigters. Renier van Vreden (gevorderde instrukteur) en Marlese Wilke (instrukteur) is die ander twee breiers by die skool. Wilmi het haar man, Jaco, deur tennis ontmoet. Haar pa het hom afgerig en toe hy later ouers gaan vra het, was die Laubschers goed met hul toekomstige skoonseun vertroud. Sy sê dit was vir haar ’n hoogtepunt om ’n speler soos Kiara onder hande te neem vandat sy begin speel het. ’n Klompie spelers wat op skool by die klub gespeel het, het daarna met ’n beurs gaan studeer om tennis te speel. ’n Paar van hulle het heeltyds oorsee afgerig, soos Natasha Stoop steeds in Amerika doen.

Breier vir HNK Ruan Bruwer DIE Hoërskool Noord-Kaap (HNK) het sy keuse van afrigter vir die eerste rugbyspan bekend gemaak. Die skool het heelwat goeie aansoeke ontvang sedert die pos geadverteer is en uiteindelik is op Shaun Huygen, wat in Italië afrig, besluit. Hy sal hom vroeg in Februarie by HNK aansluit. Huygen, ’n voormalige losvoorspeler, het kort ná sy uittrede by die Universiteit van Stellenbosch se tweede klubspan, die Victoriane, as hulpafrigter begin. Hy het ook by die Maties hand bygesit en by Paul Roos-Gimnasium en die Hoërskool Oosterlig afgerig. Hy is die afrigter by die Modena-klubspan in Italië (waar hy sedert 2007 afrig) en het die klub van die derde na die eerste divisie gebrei. Die skool het ook bekend gemaak dat Leon van Blerk, wat tot vanjaar die Griekwas se fiksheidsafrigter was, ’n groter rol by HNK sal vervul. Hy gaan heeltyds al die skool se sportsoorte se kondisionering behartig. Die res van die eerste span se breierskorps sal later in samewerking met Huygen aangestel word. HNK het die laaste jare onder Henk Brand se afrigting ’n goue tydperk op die rugbyveld beleef en hom onder die voorste 20 skolespanne in die land gevestig. Die eerstes het sedert Brand in 2009 heeltyds die hoofafrigter geword het die Kovsiestreek-kompetisie se Shimla-liga (vir mediumskole) elke jaar gewen en daarmee beklemtoon dat hy naas Greykollege geen gelyke in Sentraal-SuidAfrika het nie.

TOP South African national and local offroad, flat track and oval riders showed how it must be done at the Waterrite Racing Regen Energy Shaun Gunther Memorial Rally X event that took place over the weekend at Dirt Trax on the N8 just outside Kimberley. Riders from across South Africa competed for over R40 000 in prizes. In 97,44 seconds Franco Smith (photo) from Kimberley finished first in the Pro Motorcycle Open.
