WELCOME

TO QUEENSLAND’S BIGGEST ART TRAIL Noosa Open Studios has reached a new benchmark in 2021 with some 100 local artists opening their studio doors to both local and interstate art lovers (and buyers), making this year’s art trail a must-do… and we’re proud to launch Noosa’s month of “Artober” with this renowned arts event! This, our 6th year, is only made possible from the vision and leadership of the founders and the volunteer management committees and sub-committees who’ve given up many hours to steer this event to greater heights each year, with 2021 no exception. With five separate trails to explore, Noosa Open Studios Art Trail is now

recognised as a marquee event for the Noosa region – especially with the growth of cultural tourism in our magnificent region from the coast to the hinterland. We also acknowledge and pay tribute to the traditional custodians of these ancient lands across which our trails traverse, the Kabi Kabi people. We lead our branding and creative imaging this year with our signature event staged in advance of the October Trail – Deckchairs on the Green, comprising 40 individual and locally painted canvases fixed to regionally sourced hardwood frames, handcrafted by the Cooroora Woodworkers.

Please look out for this installation along Gympie Terrace in Noosaville on Saturday 25th September, plus you can own a piece of this unique local art by getting along and making a bid for your favourite chair at our charity auction at Noosa Botanic Gardens on Sunday 26th September. Noosa Open Studios is a not-for-profit enterprise run by volunteers who give their time and expertise to help shape the future for local artists and provide an opportunity to maximise their studio door sales potential via this focused 10-day trail. The event would not be possible without critical financial support from our partners. I take this opportunity to give thanks to Tourism Noosa, Hinternoosa Realty, Noosa Council, Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel – and of course the fantastic folk at Wallace House, our anchor gallery and Trail Guide hub. Many thanks also for additional support from RACV Noosa, IN Noosa and Your Local Lifestyle.

Finally, a big-hearted shout out to Lynn and Ron Scott from Moon Mountain for the extraordinary ongoing support they provide our art scene. As both patrons of the arts including their support of Noosa Open Studios and also through those many instances where they commission art across many genres – Ron and Lynn provide meaningful returns to artists both creatively and financially. Please use this guide to plan your signature arts experiences in our magical Noosa region. Get up close and personal with the artists whose work you love, learn about their creative techniques and processes, and most importantly take home something wonderful for your ongoing pleasure or, perhaps a gift that surprises and delights someone special. Remember... “Art is like oxygen… we only notice it’s missing when we don’t have any.” ANTHONY WYNNE-HOELSCHER

HOW TO P L A N YO U R V I S I T Check the days and times on each listing to ensure that the studios are open when you intend visiting. All artists’ studios will be open between 10 am and 4 pm, unless indicated otherwise.

O P E N D AY S A N D T I M E S

This year we have grouped the studios and galleries together into FIVE TRAILS. Each trail is centred around a different area of the Noosa Shire. All of the artists’ studios will be open for all three days of both weekends, that is, 1st, 2nd, 3rd October and then again 8th, 9th, 10th October.

In this Guide you will find an overview map and, at the beginning of each trail, there is a more detailed map of that particular trail.

Five trails and six days should allow art trail travellers to manage your time in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.

BY APPOINTMENT

Some artist studios are also open on weekdays by appointment – shown as a pale blue square on their date chart. Feel free to call the number in the listing to visit outside specified opening times.

Note: not all artists open their studio mid-week, however we have dedicated one of each FIVE TRAILS for each day, so you can get up close and personal to as many artists as possible across the region.

Start your trail experience at Wallace House, home of the Noosa Arts and Crafts, where each of the participating artists will have a piece of their work exhibited. That way you can select your preferred artists. Volunteers will be on hand to advise and assist you. Noosa Open Studios is a self drive

At each studio and gallery you’ll be required to use the QLD Govt. QR code on your smartphone. We will also seek your assistance with a separate QR code to record your postcode so that we can determine for future trails where our visitors are mainly coming from and which trails are most popular.

Rose loves the vivid colours and endless variety of the underwater world – a myriad of stunningly beautiful creatures in a blue and aqua world of mysterious depths. She has used acrylics and inks on paper and canvas, and many different techniques as she expresses the wonders of the subject.

The flow of water, Mother Earth, family connections and the necessity to create in response to life experience is what defines Rosie Lloyd-Giblett’s artistic identity. Her deep concern for climate change and love of natural landscape is evidenced within her colourful, expressive works.

Saren Dobkins has been a professional oil painter for over 30 years. Her work primarily explores human dilemmas, relationships, and desires. Colourful, abstracted, and bold interpretations of the figure, make her work very distinctive. Her expressionist and narrative approach invites us into contemplating our journey too.

From 35 years of living on the coast and in the hinterland Sue’s work and inspiration comes from her surroundings. Commissioned to do three outdoor murals for the Cooroy Pomona RSL in 2020 then four mosaic panels for the Tewantin street art project, Sue is now concentrating on an exhibition.

VIVIAN ASHWORTH

YA N N I V A N Z I J L CERA MI CI ST | MI XED MEDI A A RT I ST | SCULP TOR

Vivian’s abstract paintings use nature to express passion, diversity and the constant changes in life, with feeling, colour and movement. Everything in nature is made up of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Knowledge of the five elements allows us to have an understanding of the laws of nature and the connection it has to our emotions.

Yanni seeks to investigate shadow and form in her sculptural pieces. A multi media artist, she explores themes around environment and climate. Nature is a motivator and inspiration for her practise. Her aim is to give the viewer as much joy from her work as she did in the creation of it.

Darren’s art draws upon memories of “place” and feelings of nostalgia to create works that hopefully brings a sense of calm to the observer. In memories, details are stripped back, so when painting, Darren likes to be guided solely by the feelings of the particular moment he is drawing upon. 10 Landrail Street, Peregian Beach 4573

Des Rolph, DipVA, MAVA, creates Plein air studies that capture the essence of a landscape, further explored creatively in the studio. Her work responds emotionally to the various landscapes explored. These include the outback, which explores spirituality including the figure, and coastal areas exploring the vibrant energy moulded by wind and oceans. 5 Gossamer Court, Marcus Beach 4573

Jen Jay’s Art is textured and tactile with a luscious use of vibrant colour. She uses acrylics and palette knife to conjure images of Noosa National Park, the hinterland and coast. Jen brilliantly captures the Noosa lifestyle, and utilises the ocean and landscape as stunning backdrops for her subject.

Jude Tulloch pushes the boundaries of her art, responding to places, events, people and emotions in a deeply personal way. The materials and techniques that she employs in her projects are an integral part of her creative process. Much of her work is abstract.

Rossella works from a small home studio in Sunrise Beach. She is inspired by Noosa’s environment and the many overseas trips she has taken over the years. She depicts her paintings from some of her photo reference material on canvas, using acrylic paints.

Sharon specialises in sizable lyrical abstract wall art created with alcohol ink. Sharon describes her work as intuitive spontaneous expression and carefree paint handling creating illusionary space using a specialised technique. Her work represents the lyrical abstract tradition but with its own merit and mystical undertone. Sharing with Michele Rudder (48)

Beatrice’s paintings explore our land and sea seen from high above or down below. She is known to overlay complex organic marks over translucent hues and metallic pigments. Those create surfaces which are topographies for our imagination. Beatrice also hand carves her own prints of Australian nature on aluminium.

Bronwyn’s artworks are semi abstract depicting the colours, shapes textures she sees everyday as she explores the idea of looking into, between and through the natural bush setting she calls home. Her work is characterised by the layering of paint, her gestural mark-making and use of negative painting technique. 19 Greentree Place, Doonan 4562

Bronwyn’s quirky lanterns are loved by all who see them. They are caricatures of possums, dogs, snails, horses, chooks... any animal that you fancy! Every lantern incorporates LED lighting to truly make them come alive. Bronwyn takes commissions and especially likes to teach her craft to others. Bronwyn’s lanterns are certainly quirky!!

After working for 40 years as a first class sheet metal tradesman, Wolf is now exploring metal using his skills and knowledge to create unique pieces. He is also inspired-to turn paper origami into Metalgami. Wolf’s studio set in the Noosa Hinterland is interesting and eclectic and well worth the beautiful drive. Sharing with Kerry Sanders (89)

Diane’s love and passion for nature is apparent in her abstract and unique body of work. Lines and a myriad of colours contort in a wrestle of shapes and textures on paper. The photographic capturing of life’s simplicity, so intricate and beautiful, resonates deeply with Diane and is powerfully represented in her work. 22 Miva Street, Cooroy 4563 T 0412 459 936 E barkinkphotography@gmail.com

Jennie is a local artist who uses layering and a negative painting method to achieve her vibrant, abstract floral paintings. Her love of nature is at the heart of all her work which evokes feelings of joy and happiness. Her mixed media works show a quirky twist.

Kerry’s Studio is set on a tranquil property in the Noosa Hinterland where she creates her ceramics, including functional and sculptural pieces. Kerry is inspired by the nature of things; she loves experimenting with pattern, texture and colour, always considering order and randomness within her work.

SANDRA ROBERTSON

94

ST U D I O P OT T E R

Digging and processing the local clays and developing wood-ash glazes gives Sandra’s pottery designs exclusive natural effects on her domestic ware. These traditional techniques include only being once fired in her gas kilns. This year Sandra has focused on all things large such as wheel thrown platters, garden planters and buckets.

Tania creates a range of functional and sculptural ceramics. She fires her work in a large Japanese Anagama wood kiln at her studio “Arcadia”. This type of atmospheric firing creates complex and unique surfaces on her pottery which cannot be replicated with any other methods of firing.
