“Bench 886” is a group of Taiwan-based jewellery artists. The name “Bench 886” comes from the elements of their background. The bench is the workplace in Taiwan where jewellers feel most confident and familiar with, while ‘886’ is the international dialing code of Taiwan which is the land that nourishes their potentials in aesthetics. They expect to connect the world with their work. By dialing direct to the world, they expect their jewellery to be acknowledged, be impressed, and be known, so that collective jewellery full of passion and ambition from Taiwan can be seen and appreciated. http://bench886studio.weebly.com

Cai-Xuan Wu Artist Statement: “Acrylic is the main material in my work. This non-textile material allows me to transform a traditional craft technique into a contemporary art work which pushes the boundary of material and making technique. I try to insert nature into the material and bring the life out. Through all the hand making process, the sea life-like organic form allows my imagination into real life and shows the free, fluid and vitality feeling of natural. It brings people to start question and curious about their existence and encourages people to think in different perspective. As contrast, I use industrial material such as acrylic to making organic and vivid creature form to challenge the sensory stimulation of soft and hard. I aim to push people to re-evaluate the relationship between natural and the fast developing life surrounds us”. Other relevant information: Education 2011-2012 Master of Arts. Han-Chieh Chuang Artist Statement: “The growing background and experience of the environments has strongly influenced the concept of my works. I look for elements that have come from my affection for my homeland, particularly, the Taiwanese agriculture and old traditional buildings in old farming villages. Combining techniques with handcraft skills I complete series of works that I hope to express the strength and emotions connected to my home. I use enamel as my working material because of the textures and colours it brings. I’m attracted to its rich possibilities of colours and its characteristic of uniqueness. Every single enameling gives unique result and challenge. Through exploring and controlling the material I tell a story of texture and colour and bring out the layers and completeness of my works. Through my works I expects to pass an idea of the beauty of my homeland and bring it back to hearts where those beauties have been forgotten”.

Shih-Dea Tseng Artist Statement: Deborah Tseng is a Taiwanese jewellery designer and maker who is currently based in the UK. She has been trained in metal work since she was seventeen years old, then in 2011 came to the UK to study jewellery design, continuing her passion. During the year she studied for her MA, she used cultural conflict and her original background blend to fuel the design of her jewellery. She has chosen an unconventional material for her designs, which is porcelain. With this choice she hopes to change the viewer’s perceptions of jewellery. She is sensitive to the words of her favourite literatures which have become part of her inspiration. Deborah aims to challenge the stereotypes of society with her work, whilst providing a soothing feeling. Her jewellery discusses the issues between maker, wearer and viewer. “Do not judge a book by its cover” is a phrase which inspires Deborah. Meaning an indistinct and subtle atmosphere can illustrate our society because there is no absoluteness to anything. The neutral areas created in her work are: peaceful, yet peculiar and fragile but strong. Jewellery is the medium she uses to communicate her aesthetic ideas. Juxtaposing textures have been explored which are desirable to touch, and so evoke the wearer’s emotions. She is still working with porcelain and discovering the possibility of human senses to communicate her understanding of life’s philosophy to the audiences. Wen-Miao Yeh Artist Statement “Space is three-dimensional and the most important thing in my work. Human beings are visual, live in three-dimensional space and create objects from what they see in daily life. The relationship between human beings’ emotion and living space is of the most importance that I take into account in my work. Fog, swing, and indefinite are my inspiration for the new collection. I try to remember the precious moment of London and myself. Some memories are like the winter mist in London with late night neon light. I was attempting to see clearly on the street and thought that I can recognize my way, however, do I really can even when the fog dissipated? Space is not only space but is also sentimentally attached to ourselves”. Other relevant information: Wen-Miao YEH’s work is inspired by the relationship of daily space and personal memories. She attempts to keep the unforgettable times and interprets these stories into her jewellery by silk-screen printing. Wen Miao finished her MA degree from Birmingham School of Jewellery in 2012 and was selected in SCHMUCK on 2013 and 2014, also obtained the Grand Prix of 2013 ITAMI contemporary jewellery exhibition. She is presently developing her career as an independent contemporary jeweller.

Ying-Hsiu Chen Artist Statement: “Having been raised near the sea, I have always been familiar with the ocean and visited the beach very often. Living near the sea since childhood has taught me to learn from nature, which is one of the sources of my inspiration. By observing natural objects, I can obtain a thorough understanding of the spirits they embody and integrate those characteristics into my art. A new style of jewelry ornamentation has been developed through microscopic sculpture. With my background and aesthetic experiences, as well as my personal traits, I use local materials to portray the contour of a scene and the image inside my heart, thus recreating nature while getting back to nature. Through my art, I have found a harbor for my soul. When I can represent the scene in my mind by using my hands, I seem to be able to smell the seawater and feel at ease. Through years of observation and creation, the melody and rhythm deep in my mind are expressed and released, and the materials of daily life can also be kept alive. This also demonstrates my perception of the spaces and environments around me”.

Artist Statement: “In my art, to gaze in dazzle at detail in second - I worship and remind of the beauty and rhythms of the kaleidoscopic life. I am a Europe based Taiwanese emerging jewellery artist, works with textile, metal and mixed media. My work is process-based and structurally complex. I practice paper cutting/ folding where the ideas of 3D structures originate. Due to the designed structure, it offers diversification of wearing. I focus on the notion of Origami and paper art, architectural structures, interaction and seduction of pattern; the original pleasure captured by the structure of organisms inherent in nature. I do not set out to be a fashion or jewellery artist but as my portfolio developed and I became interested in both elements and aesthetics. My work comprises the medium of polyester felt, nature fiber, synthetic fabric, silk, metal and mixed media. The techniques include Origami, paper cutting, laser cutting, hand painting, dyeing, digital printing, transferring and fabricating. With the presentation of the colour, pattern and structure, may my works bring fun and fantasy to the audience”. Yung-huei Chao Artist Statement: “Jewellery is the building block put on to the surface of the body, and so are the constructional elements on housings and architectures. We create space within the compact city lives and frame ourselves into a secure and comfort environment. I try to capture these actions being neglected for the ordinary. Magnifying and mimicking in wearable dimension”.

Zita Ying-Hsun Hsu Artist Statement: “Creations of my own have always been encompassed by elements of time”. “[In Flux collection] Science usually gives a rational impression, and may only surprise people but may be difficult to evoke one’s emotions. My wearing art is inspired by the Asia aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi to taste soothing. I explore magnetism to embody invisible movement and solidify its ephemeral moment in a static work, that people can directly experience and interpret with their senses. [Handwriting collection] My latest work is perceptively historical, stories of “bubble land”. Words, not only ways of communication but also vessels of cultural identities, It is ever changing, ever evolving, ever deceasing and rejuvenating as a living organism. It is also dynamic, occasionally to be kept reticent and hidden. Perhaps it is for its vulnerability that it’s sublimity is made apparent. And for that it is eager to be uncovered and perceived. Like fading silhouettes, it has never been so vivid in its existence”. “In Flux. B22”. 2014. Brooch. Iron powder, soft epoxy resin, white gold plated, stainless steel wire. Magnetism, forging.
