CISS System – The Questions & Answers What does CISS mean? CISS means Continuous Ink Supply System that supplies ink continuously to the print head of the printer requiring no cartridge replacements. What are the advantages of the CISS? The biggest advantage of the CISS is the operational cost of the printer. Furthermore, with the affordability of continuous ink supply system, it has become more budget friendly. Subsequently, comparing to the frequent replacements of the cartridges and wastage of the unusable ink in the conventional cartridges you pay a fraction of the cost for buying a CISS. How does CISS system work? This CISS system comprises of indestructible plastic bottles or reservoir containing ink placed outside just next to the printer. There are special ink cartridges installed inside the printer to which the ink is carried through a set of tubes from the bottles, which is then carried to the print head of the printer. Once all the connections are made, the air from the cartridges is syringed out creating a vacuum, pulling in ink from the bottles to the cartridges creating a continuous flow of ink or continuous ink supply. Why does ink puddle on the paper If the ink bottles or the reservoir tanks are seated above the height of the cartridges, the differential pressure causes a siphon effect and the ink flows freely to the print head, making puddles of ink on the paper. Ink not getting to the printer Ink containing bottles are lower to the printer creating very weak suction power. Holes on the top of the reservoir are closed, preventing air from entering the reservoir tanks. A lot of air in the system in the middle of the cartridges and the reservoir tanks Troubleshooting points: • Ensure that all the seals and joints are airtight. • Remove any possible air in the system. • Do not let ink get dry. • There should be no air 'over' the level of the ink. • Very Important – always maintain the reservoir tanks height at the level of the printer
