Residential Plumbing Problems At one time or another, everyone has encountered some type of residential plumbing problem. Some of the problems you can take care of yourself but for others you will have to call a plumbing repair specialist, which can be quite expensive. Problems with your plumbing repair can happen because the excessive usage can wear out the parts in your fixtures and faucets. When there are blockages in the path of sewage water it can cause your drain to clog or your toilet can flood if there is a blockage in the pipe or trap.
Dripping faucet This problem usually indicates there is a worn out washer and you need to replace it. These seals of compression faucets or washers are under constant pressure so they wear out quite frequently. If you do not fix the problem it can lead to corrosion of the fixtures, wastage of water, or staining of sink bowls. The ball, disc, and cartridge faucets are washerless but they do have moving parts sealed with O-rings that do need to occasionally to be replaced. These types are not as apt to drip or leak like compression faucets.
Toilet plumbing problems If the water is not draining fast enough when you flush the toilet this usually means that there is some type of blockage in the pipe or trap from the toilet to the soil stack. To get rid of this blockage you will need to use a toilet plunger. If this does not work you may need to use an auger or wire snake to dislodge the blockage. The culprit for scaled up shower heads is hard water. In hard water the salts accumulate and form a layer on your shower head. This layer makes it impossible for your water to come out or it just barely dribbles. Choose a shower head with a rubber faceplate if you have hard water in order to prevent this problem. If your shower head is badly clogged, detach the faceplate so you can soak it overnight in white vinegar. To get rid of the loose scales use a stiff nailbrush or toothpick.
Clogged drain There are two things that can cause your drain to move slowly. It could a blockage in the vent system or the onset of a clog. You can use a chemical drain cleaner to clean the clog but you have to be careful as the caustic chemicals can damage some pipes. It is best to plunge the drain, use a snake, or try a safer homemade drain cleaning.
