Legal computer recycling options

Safe and legal computer recycling options Today’s high-tech manufacturers are busy rolling out millions of electronic products that are meant to make communication and life in general simple and enjoyable. However, most of these products, especially electronics and computers contain some amounts of toxic materials that pose a real threat to the environment especially when they are not disposed of in the right manner. Whether you are talking about computers, televisions, lab analyzers or EKG monitors, they are made using otherwise hazardous materials such as chlorinated plastics (PVC), cadmium, mercury, lead and brominates flame retardants. There are several safe and legal methods that can be used for Chicago computer recycling that you can consider.

Charity Donations You can decide as an organization to donate your old computers to charity or some schools because this will go a long way in benefitting some underprivileged institution. What’s more, making such a donation is a good public relations exercise for your company. However, you may have noticed that the appetite for second hand computers has reduced significantly as a result of funding from the government. You may want to export some of your equipment to countries in Africa and Easter Europe where there is still a small window for donations.

Trickle down policy This is a policy where a computer that becomes redundant but is still functional enough to be of use in a different department is taken there. There are many organizations that have discovered the benefits of this policy that include: getting all the gains that a company should get from the entire life of a computer, getting opportunities for reformatting the computer’s hard drive especially when it has to do with internal use which is an environmentally friendly practice. The only downside of this policy is that you must remove data from the machine before it is redeployed; it must be tested for safety once it has been redeployed and at the end of its life, you must still look for a safe way to dispose of the computer.

In-house staff sales There are some IT departments within companies that run some informal retail outlets where workers can buy laptops and PCs; you only challenge with this form of electronics recycling is that many knowledgeable employees will want to purchase the few desirable items which could create unhealthy competition. The IT department will have to look for a way to avoid favoritism in selling these items. On the positive side your employees will be happy while the company will raise some revenue without using too many resources.
