The Duquesne Incline, which has been scaling the side of Mount Washington since May 7, 1877, is just one example of Pittsburgh’s pride in the Steelers. On game day, a sign is added to each of the 2 cars – the left one reads ‘DEEE’ and the right one reads ‘FENSE.’ When the cars pass each other at the halfway point, they read DEEEFENSE.

Downtown residents do not pay the substantial Pittsburgh parking tax on monthly leases at building-specific garages and most Parking Authority and Alco-managed garages. Contact the garage closest to you for information.
18
The Port Authority has a Downtown Free Fare Zone. All buses and subways within the Golden Triangle (between the rivers) are free. Also, seniors citizens presenting appropriate identification can ride for free at all times. Visit www.portauthority.org for more information.
Personal Tips: • Stay alert; pay attention to your surroundings. • Stick to well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through alleys and parking lots. • Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat pocket or front pants pocket, not a back pocket. • Try to use automatic teller machines during the daytime. Use inside ATMs when possible. Vehicle Tips: • Park in well lit areas whenever possible. • Do not leave personal identification in your car, including registration/insurance cards, credit card and gas receipts. • Keep valuables locked in the trunk or out of view. • Never leave your car running and unattended. Panhandling: • Direct your generosity to organizations that help the homeless, rather than giving money directly to people on the streets. A great many panhandlers use the money they solicit to support drug and alcohol problems. • If someone harasses you, walk away and report the incident to a police officer or the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. Section 602 of the City’s code describes “aggressive panhandling.”
