Norah Daudi | University of Waterloo Architecture Portfolio W24
Hi, my name is Norah Daudi, and I’m currently a second-year Architectural Engineering student at the University of Waterloo.
After traveling for work and being exposed to so many wonderful designers and engineers, I’ve developed an immense appreciation for creating thoughtful intersections between people and the built environment.
With a background in both architecture and engineering, my work explores architectural strategies with the intention of creating thoughtful responses to societal issues, high carbon emissions, and restoration.
In my free time, I love to paint and watch movies

ADAPTIVE REUSE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
This project centers around the revival of a modern heritage structure that has remained unused and neglected Despite its importance, the structure has fallen into disrepair, with its physical state reflecting years of abandonment elements.
The current condition of the building poses unique challenges. The structure exhibits signs of wear, including weathered structural vulnerabilities, and outdated spatial layouts that no longer align with contemporary needs. Preserving design while addressing these functional and aesthetic deficiencies is key to our vision, breathing new life into historically significant structure.

TRANSIT MAPPING
The site is located in suburban residential area of Denver. An above ground parking lot currently occupies the roughly 40 x 120 feet site, which this project reimagines into a residential building to house ten additional families in the neighbourhood.
“Healthier Homes” is the exploration into creating better residential buildings for families of three to five. This project explores the potentials of better family residences when freed from the constraints of current building codes and bylaws. Specifically, the requirement of multiple staircases in residential buildings. This six-story building resolves around a single staircase and elevator, and the design captures the potential benefits of doing so.
This project’s goal is to inspire reconsideration and reimagining of what “family home” means to individuals and families. Let us reconsider how design can fulfill our values of privacy, community, and comfort.
The unique suite plans creates the spontaneous form that is shown on the exterior. The extrusions and offsets create spaces for air and light to travel in and through the building. A key design feature is the disalignment between floors of the two wings. The west wing is a half-story higher than the east, allowing each suite to have its own entrance and circulation space. The wings are joined with a courtyard accessible to two suites each, creating a shared space of activity and storage, despite the suites being elevated above ground.
The design process was a lengthy exploration into how residential spaces could be reimagined if the designers imagined beyond the constraints of current bylaws and codes. The form seen here is the resolution of an idea to create a space specifically for families, while using a given space more efficiently. By revolving the building around a singular central staircase, more floor space is reserved for larger suites. The identity of the project became these core explorations. For one, the building revolves around a central circulation space. And two, large suites designed for families to live comfortably.
WHY SINGLE EGRESS?
WITH BUILDING CODES BEING CHANGED REGARDING EGRESS, DESIGNERS ARE CONSIDERING 6 STORY UNITS AS A WAY TO HOUSE FAMILIES WITH A SMALLER LAND FOOTPRINT
Efficient Use of Space: Single stair housing minimizes redundant circulation areas (like large stairwells or corridors) and focuses on compact layouts, reducing construction costs.
Simplified Building Codes: Single stair configurations often comply with simplified code requirements for smaller buildings, reducing design and permitting complexity.
Lower Material and Construction Costs: By reducing the structural and material demands of multiple stairwells, builders can save on costs, allowing for more affordable housing units.
Maximizing Land Use: Single stair designs support vertical stacking and highdensity layouts while remaining human-scaled. This is critical in urban areas like Denver, where land availability is limited.
More Units per Building Footprint: By using fewer stairs and shared spaces, single stair buildings allocate more of the structure’s footprint to livable space.
Potential for Mixed-Use Development: This typology can integrate commercial or communal spaces, promoting vibrant and self-sustaining communities.

Program: Ferryman Office and passanger
waiting area
Organized by Terraviva Competitions
The local ferrymen provide the sole connection to the island, transporting residents, tourists, and goods between Easdale and the mainland. This small team of four works in pairs to ensure crossings from 7 am to 11 pm every day throughout the year. The existing Ferryman’s Office and Passenger Waiting Room are quaint structures located near the island’s edge, the first buildings to greet visitors and islanders as they disembark. Unfortunately, this space is incredibly dark, cold, uncomfortable, and closed off. This pavilion aims to be an important part of Easdale’s architectural identity, as it is the final interaction visitors have with the island.
The design aims to create a dwelling for the ten passengers that the boat carries, as well as the ferryman. This design is broken into several smaller buildings to create localized programs throughout the space while still feeling a part of the natural context. By staggering the buildings in a cluster, the different structures can follow the natural topography changes in the land.

SWON LTD
Located in Incheon, South Korea, on the Wild Rye Changmoo Farm, SWON has been contracted to design a community market with four phases. During my term at SWON, I was given the privilege to travel to Korea to help in the design and construction of Phase One of the masterplan. Phase One features a pavilion that was inspired by the client’s grandfather, who built the shed in the photo to the left. Following this, Phase Two—a coffee shop—will undergo construction in the spring of 2025.
The Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation is located in southern Ontario, along the shores of Lake Huron, 35 km from Sarnia, Ontario, near the Michigan border. The community includes 1,000 members living on the reserve and 900 members living off the reserve.
At SWON, our mission is to utilize innovative construction techniques, incorporating biogenic materials and solid limestone construction, to introduce a new style of affordable housing that is both sustainable and centered on the well-being of the native residents. Inspired by Gilles Perraudin’s work with solid limestone construction, SWON will be the first firm to implement this approach in North America.
