Transport fares in London have been on the rise for the past few years, making the cost of living even more difficult for the public. This doesn’t make life any esier for students who have to budget their spending on food, books, social life, bills and rent. We think it’s UNFARE that university students have to pay so much money for travel that could go towards other costs. That’s why STUDENTS AGAINST FARES aim to fight against these costs that hold back the university experience!

SOME STUDENTS WHO THINK “THAT’S NOT FARE” We are a student campaign taking action together with other students who share our views, so we felt it was important to address their opinions in this leaflet. To do this we created a questionnaire about transport fares in London answered by15 fellow students who are studying in the Capital, those who commute back home to London and students who commute to London for course related events and project research.

As a Student how do you feel about the current travel fares in London? Would you say it has a huge impact on your cost of living?

TO GET HOME?!

THAT COULD GO TOWARDS

TEXT BOOKS! So you’re from London studying outside London. Coming home to London for 4 nights and wanting to get a round will be a daily cap of £7 on your Oyster using both Bus and Tube. Altogether that’s £28 for the weekend and £336 a year if you go at least once every month! #THATSNOTFARE

Should fares in London be changed? If so how much by?

1 Very Expensive!!

7

Too high And yes it does because it means I have to budget.

8

Yes

5

Definitely a big impact on the cost of living

- BBC NEWS

Student ticket prices should be reduced to child prices.

3

6

I think it should be like the old days and also give a better discount to students. Plus stop raising the prices every year.

too expensive, puts me off going to the exhibits there. I’d like to go to more

4

They should really be slightly more than the cost value

5

9

ridiculous! i dont go to a uni in london so i dont get the 5p discount, which to be fair is not even a significant reduction. Theres not a huge of an impact on my living costs but it does demotivate me to go see parents more often and when im there to go out and see friends.

It ridiculous! It puts me off traveling to london

Annoying! Not sure how the government expect students to go to school & some how manage find money to pay for travel & to live

PER CENT

56 IN ADDITION TO A

OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS

Should be reduced

Yes it is, before when I used transport for London to go to my uni, it was more expensive than me driving to uni and paying for petrol. So I chose to drive instead of using public transport

When i’m in london as opposed to winchester it is a significant difference paying that much money a day just to get around.

I still havent recieved my student oyster after 2 months I want my money back and I want to pay 40% less on travel

6

yes, should drop by at least 20%

11

7

3rd off for students like the young persons rail card

9

It’d be nice if they were lower. Overall it doesn’t have a huge impact on me since I’m staying out of London for uni, but next year when I move back it probably will.

Yes.

#THATSNOTFARE

Travel on London Buses is currently free for those that are under 18 and in full-time education. Would it be a good idea to apply this to University Students as well to ease the costs of commuting?

8

no more than bus should be £1 max and tube should not be anymore than 2.50 a journey

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

8

O definitely

Yes

I think that the cap on Oyster cards should be lowered.

Definitely no doubt

YES

It won’t happen but in an ideal world fares should be reduced by half

upgrading to a travel card from winchester is worth it. full oyster card prices for a day travel would be nicer if cheaper as i go to

12

I think the train companies need to be reduced further rather than the tube itself

13

yes - lower

I think it is if you are at a london university...

10

11

13

No surprise how expensive it has gotten to use Transport for London’s services over the years, but wouldn’t it be a alot better if it was at least 56% cheaper for university students?

14

yes but not as much, gets expensive if you start to go often

Totally agree with this

Most definitely

As a Londoner and a student, yes

9

Although i wouldn’t really benefit from this change,YES because accommodation in London is very pricy and i can understand the struggle.

10

Yes most definitely! I would go to London much more often if it was £5 for a travel card. I don’t mind paying what it costs to get there I would rather it was cheaper to travel when I was there

Yes, especially since students will most likely use the same route every day and often won’t have a steady source of income.

Yes definitely

13 Yes

Definitely not, there are still delays and weekend closures across the London Underground. I can understand they’re trying to improve the system by doing this, but it causes more hassle.

MPs are suggesting that prices should be frozen in 2014 as they rise every year, but is this really enough to help the costs of travelling in London?

I think the London 2012 Olympics perfectly proved London Transport CAN run efficiently and on-time without all the changes

It’s likely there is a cancelation on the overground for someone, and on the underground you’ll be sure to be held at a red signal.

I’ve not really noticed anything apart from a little less wee on the Circle line.

ON A BUS?! THE RENT! THAT COULD GO TOWARDS

Travelling on Bus alone rather than taking the London Underground is a cheaper option, yet still expensive for the service you recieve. It’s slower, and you’re more likely to be late to a lecture stuck in traffic. It is currently £548 for an annual Bus Pass, but are many students willing to pay that much up front for an even longer journey? #THATSNOTFARE

Transport for London says fare rises have been implemented in the last few years to improve all transport services around London, How do you feel about this? Would you say fares have helped the performance of transport?

Not sure

13

Apart from the new hammersmith & city line trains I haven’t seen any improvements! And more stations to lose jobs and help cut costs, is there a real need? And the money they’re ‘saving’ where is it being spent. More double decker buses needed.

apart form the new fancy buses (which are essentially a modern revert of the old buses without the string bell) and the one carriage trains. The new trains are a very promising and valuable design with more space and a fresh outlook- However i haven’t witnessed any differences in the service itself, so in general the performance of transport remains the same, which wasnt too bad to begin with so i do not understand the prices.

no, they should drop and not just frozen

14

no too many delays. too many weekend closures. few nice trains on the hamm’ & city lin, circle and met line

3

No it hasn’t, the furniture and vehicles are always dirty, the material on the seats are always dirty and never comfortable.

6

I dont feel like the service has improved from it.

4

no, still no air con on the tubes!

3

It’s a step up, but not enough. I think the government should subsidise travel costs

Not enough for students, more should be done if prices can not be changed.. incentives should be included such as discounts for shopping/eating with travel cards or oysters.

i reckon students many work around and get used to the prices now, personally i think the prices are just above reasonable but again im not too affected so freezing in 2014 may be a good call. Only if, they follow through with it, saying that it will be frozen and introducing another charge is unacceptable.

8

Every little helps, but there should be another resolution

9

Yes but I think they should lower it as well, so everyone that has low incomes can afford it or even people that are unemployed, instead of cycling or walking to their destination

It’s better than nothing

15

i havent noticed as i have only started going in the last few years.

11

In the short term, no, but in a few years it will most likely save us a fair bit.

12

I see no difference from a few years ago

not really, chances are you’ll still reach the cap on your oyser card and end up paying exactly the same anyway

10

THAT COULD GO TOWARDS

1

NO! There is no heating on buses whatsoever, and the buses are too slow!

11

12

500

5

they should provide cheaper deals to make it worth using. i.e. discounts or month passes etc.

yes

yes

Not that I have noticed.

Haven’t noticed any difference at all, and as some one who travels there maybe once a yeah that’s something you notice!

10

15

2

9

It would be good if they did freeze as then it would be easy to budget for.

You could be spending up to £1000 a year buying a zone 1 to 2 weekly Travelcard with a 18+ Student Oyster. So it would seem sensible to save and by an annual Travelcard for £848. And yet with the number of strikes, dirty transport, delays, and stuffy Tube trains, that amount of money really seems unreasonable.

#THATSNOTFARE

Frozen? I think it should be decreased some of us students dont all have jobs, moreover, student finance is not enough for the semester to keep up with every necessity of living cost from commuting, rent and so on.

13 No

14

yesss-a monthly student is round £85. in just 2yrs is will defo be £100+, rent in london is ridic, halls are even worse

15

Freezing is better than rising, but freezing isn’t reducing
