FAÇADE DESIGN – AL AZBAKYIA CONTEXT 23
CONTEXTUAL FAÇADE DESIGN The context is the busy district of Al Azbakyia. The district is unique for its heritage and its social transformation which is reflected on the architectural morphology of the site. The project starts with deep analysis of the 26th of July street and then selecting one building for façade redesign where three façade alternatives are proposed; a context harmonious alternative, a context opposing alternative and an in between alternative.

Building on the analysis of the 26th of July street and context and further analysis of Al Azbakyia Garden, a master plan of 6 buildings was designed on the Azbakiya garden site where greenery and vegetation is highly maintained while at the same time providing spaces for the users to interact in and to satisfy their needs. The concept is to allow for the informality of the user behavioral pattern in a master plan of designed informality. The opera house and music center is one of the 6 buildings and is further detailed and designed on the micro scale level.

The water front mixed use development has a minimal footprint in order to create an open plaza level facing the Nile view and to have minimal impact on the fertile land of the Nile banks. The footprint of the master plan is a refection of the vertical circulation components. The main spaces are elevated and are horizontally placed at an angel to allow for wide view , best wind ventilation and minimum heat gain.

The residential compound enjoys a clear water view from every single unit. The vehicular circulation is laid out in a certain manner in order not to interrupt either the flow of safe pedestrian circulation or the hierarchy of public, semi public, and private zones of the master plan. Internal water feature is created as part of the landscape of the main public zone.
