Velkommen! Welcome to Nordic Delight Festival 2014! Time flies when you’re having fun! It’s already one and a half year after the first edition of Nordic Delight Festival and in the meanwhile you could enjoy the Lydmor living room concerts and our sold out Norwegian Night in EKKO. Today promises to be a full Nordic expedition, a long day full of Scandinavian music, film, art, literature and food! You’ve entered our beautiful festival location, where you can watch live music inside the 800 year old Nicolaïkerk in the Kloostertuin and in De Stallen. Check out short and feature films and a special talkshow and workshop upstairs in the Tuinzaal and check out our new merchandise and Scandinavian books and films downstairs in our livingroom. This is also the area where you can find the mini restaurant of Noma affiliated chefs Birgir & Pontus and Swedish cuisine from Carla’s. Feel free to play a game of Kubb in the garden and to visit the museum during the day to check out the entire collection. Last but not least don’t forget to check out the intimate, nearby Sonnenborgh Museum & Observatory where Norwegian theatre, an interview with writer Arne Dahl and some exclusive acoustic live sessions will take place. We are sure there is enough to do, see, feel, touch and taste all day and all your senses will be tickled with Nordic Delights. We hope you enjoy the festival and if you have your Nordic Delight afterdip next week, don’t worry, because we will be back already on October 16th, with a special Nordic Delight evening at Amsterdam Dance Event in the Sugarfactory, with live shows of Bottled in England, Den Sorte Skole and Sekuoia. This last act you can also see late this evening at the beautiful Nicolaïkerk. But for now… the church bells played ABBA tunes, so let the Nordic experience begin!

Árstíðir (IS) A band such as Árstíðir immediately takes you to the land of volcanoes and glacier lakes. The band of five brings us beautiful, vocal harmonies accompanied by the piano, baritone guitar and strings to create a magical and mystical vibe. The fact that a large part of the songs is in Icelandic, only benefits the quality of this vibe. You don’t need to speak the language to be able to understand the existential themes of loneliness, beauty and transience. Árstíðir stands for delicate folk music; no pimping is needed here!
Music NDF 2014 - pag 7
Blaue Blume (DK) The Danish melodramatic band Blaue Blume derived its name from a poem written by Joseph von Eichendorff. The poem’s symbol of romanticism and endeavour to perfection represents their music pretty well. They recently released a five-track EP, titled Beau & Lorette, full of layered, flamboyant, dreamy indie pop. The intriguing androgynous falsetto of singer Jonas Smith immediately catches everyone’s attention, without a doubt. Together with the studied guitar lines that flit between metallic crunch and complex melodic structures, Blaue Blume brings a magical combination of ingredients. The cocktail they serve up is good! Music NDF 2014 - pag 8
Death Hawks (FI) This is not some neatly labelled band that easily fits into one genre. The long haired Finnish guys of Death Hawks make psychedelic blues rock but have developed their very own style. Sometimes it’s a bit of krautrock or folk that takes over, while other songs see this band indulge in heavy atmospheric riffs or even a saxophone solo. Death Hawks are rough and soulful and deliver their songs with an utterly raw expression. Live, this results in a fierce musical and hypnotising experience. Witness their energetic presence on stage at Nordic Delight Festival, you might well be pleasantly surprised.
Music NDF 2014 - pag 9
Disaster in the Universe (NO) The guys of Disaster in the Universe are influenced by a lot of different continents and cultures, that’s for sure. The band has created an exciting sound that combines elements of psychedelic rock and synth filled electronics. The Norwegians deliver their full potential on stage, which will be customized to their needs with palm trees, neon body colours and draperies. Turning the stage into a beach, the band presents their catchy feel-good melodies and tropical rhythms that will keep you dancing all night long!
Music NDF 2014 - pag 10
Einar Stray Orchestra (NO) Inspired by Bright Eyes, Sufjan Stevens and Godspeed You! Black Emperor the (now) 24 year old Einar Stray started out in 2006, recording songs in his bedroom in Sandvika, Norway. As an experimental singer-songwriter he produced both delicate and grandiose sounds. After meeting the Norwegian artist Moddi in 2008, they quickly joined forces and appeared in each other’s bands ever since. With the debut album “Chiaroscuro” finally coming up in 2011, the band got compressed into a five-piece with cello, violin, bass and drums, with Einar’s signature piano playing and low voice in center. With a range from noisy post-rock ballads to stripped down a-capella songs the band toured all of 2012, and gave also birth to “For The Country EP”.
Music NDF 2014 - pag 11
Get Your Gun (DK) The aged sound of Get Your Gun makes us believe that we’re dealing with a band that has been around for a while, but they are definitely not. The Danish threesome just released their overwhelming debut record The Worrying Kind at the beginning of April, which has received smashing reviews in their home country. The band now seems ready to take over the rest of the world. Get Your Gun takes you to the heart of the dark blues and stoner rock, with an obvious touch of Nordic melancholy. Don’t miss out on this performance!
Music NDF 2014 - pag 12
Ghost Venue (DK) This Danish electronic duo Ghost Venue consists of producer Theodor Kristensen and musician Benjamin Fischermann, who adds live drumming. This gives their music a whole new energetic touch. It’s a breed of electronica hip-hop infused with soul and elements of funk, jazz and blues in a production style that’s supremely unique. Sometimes nostalgic with soothing sounds of the past, at other times futuristic and hard-hitting. These guys look and sound like they’re happy to keep doing what they do best – their own thing. Of course we’re happy to let them do so at Nordic Delight festival. Music NDF 2014 - pag 13
Heimatt (DK/NO) Heimatt means homewards in neo-Norwegian and accurately describes singer Magnus Grilstad’s feelings concerning his split nationality. He grew up in Denmark but spent a majority of his time in Norway. The songs are a personal search for roots and the different impulses and impressions in both countries. His melancholy lyrics are all about death, the mountains, true love and trying to find your way home. Drawing on a wealth of upbeat folk with violin, tambourine and acoustic guitar, Heimatt shapes an organic sound and will put on a high-energy show. A perfect opener for Nordic Delight festival. Music NDF 2014 - pag 14
Jennie Abrahamson (SE) Jennie Abrahamson initially spent many years playing with various artists before becoming a solo artist in 2006. In the meantime, she has released some highly praised albums, full of sweet-voiced pop music and a production carefully designed to emphasize her vocals. Since the release of her last album she has toured not only with her own band but also as part of Ane Brun’s band, and most recently returned from supporting and singing alongside none other than Peter Gabriel. A new album will see the light this year – we’ll get a taste at Nordic Delight Festival! Music NDF 2014 - pag 15
Loney, Dear (SE) feat. Maarten Vos (NL) Emil Svanängen is a natural born musician and he’s multi-talented. This Swedish guy sings his melodies so effortlessly that they seem to come from the warmest of souls. His songs are a combination of folk and electronica, with strong falsetto vocals that are layered over dynamic compositions. In the past Loney, Dear hit the main stage of Lowlands and played an unforgettable concert in a sold out Tivoli, but at Nordic Delight Festival he will perform in a more intimate setting in the Nicolaïkerk together with Dutch cellist Maarten Vos. Maarten is known as an improviser with (custom build) electronics and worked with artists such as Greg Haines, Kyteman, Ólafur Arnald and at last years Nordic Delight Festival with Lydmor. This year Maarten will do an unique performance with Loney, Dear.
Music NDF 2014 - pag 16
Olga Vocal Ensemble (NL/IS/RU) Olga is a new ensemble based in the Netherlands, with undoubtedly international roots, including members from Iceland. Their repertoire covers five centuries and more of musical joy, from Renaissance to barbershop. The ensemble consisting of tenors Bjarni Guðmundsson and Jonathan Ploeg, baritone Gulian van Nierop, bass-baritone Pétur Oddbergur Heimisson and bass Philip Barkhudarov captivate their audiences with unbridled fun, drama, enthusiasm, and simply beautiful singing. Next to their own performance at Nordic Delight Festival they might join some other artists on stage too! Music NDF 2014 - pag 17
Proviant Audio (NO) Whiz-kid Mathias Stubø gained notoriety at the age of only fourteen when he was nominated for artist of the year and hailed as one of the best disco producers in Norway. Stubø has been building up a solid reputation with his live performances backed by a full band, including brass players. Proviant Audio makes electronic music with groovy basslines and poppy hooks, influenced by soul, funk andazz music. The music is drenched with uplifting fusion which gives their sound a fresh positivity. Proviant Audio is ready to play at Nordic Delight Festival. Music NDF 2014 - pag 18
Sailor & I (SE) feat. Fox String Quartet (NL) Sailor & I is the alter ego for Swedish multi-instrumentalist and producer Alexander Sjödin, who describes his solo act as ‘a metaphor for two wills within one person that are fighting against one another’. Sjödin introduces a sense of darkness and creates deep, dramatic, high-gloss production with musical storytelling not often found in typical dance music. In 2012 he released the successful ‘Tough Love’, a violin-driven piece of music, which gained a lot of interest across Europe. His newest single, “Turn Around” is one of the most anticipated releases in 2014 and could easily become a new summer anthem. To make this performance extra special a full string quartet from the Netherlands will accompany Sailor & I on stage in the beautiful Nicolai Church. The Fox String Quartet already performed during Nordic Delight Festival 2013 with Swedish band Bye Bye Bicycle and they’re back this year. Fox String Quartet consists of Maarten Vos (cello), Ben Mathot (violin), Hieke Dam (violin) and Rani Kumar (alt violin).
Music NDF 2014 - pag 19
Sekuoia (DK) Firm yet elegant, much like the mammoth sequoia tree, Danish producer Patrick Alexander Bech-Madsen’s music sounds static and fluid at the same time. Covered by foliage of experimental electronica, ambient and hip hop, this Sekuoia dances on the wind. The combination of dry beats, copy/paste vocals and analogue instruments creates a hypnotizing and dreamlike sensation that will make you fall silent. He hasn’t grown to his full height yet but it’s only a matter of time before this ambitious talent will be as great as his name suggests. Music NDF 2014 - pag 20
The 1st (DK) What’s wrong with pure sixties rock? Nothing. The 1st comes straight from the presses. With their authentic approach of upbeat and energetic rock, combined with polyphonous backing vocals, their sixties sound can’t be missed. Their first single ‘Surrender’ went down well with the fans and proves a good example of their raw and edgy sound. Two of the band members are familiar with Nordic Delight as they were here before with the band The Good The Bad. Let their undoubtedly electric live set take you by surprise! Music NDF 2014 - pag 21
Tremoro Tarantura (NO) Tremoro Tarantura brings a spicy, experimental cacophony of sound. With primal beats, screeching guitars and distorted synths this mysterious band explores its own limits between the ugly and the beautiful, constantly verging on the edge of disaster. They shake hands with imperfection, but somehow manage to keep a strong melody, which guides the listener through the eclectic romanticism, and into the light. You can call it a fresh breath of air on the Norwegian scene. If you’re looking for an alternative to more or less everything else you’ll find at European festivals, this is a good choice.
Music NDF 2014 - pag 22
Vök (IS) Margrét Rán Magnúsdóttir and Andri Már Enoksson have been working together as the duo Vök since early 2011 and eventually introduced guitarist Ólafur Aleksander. The Icelandic trio brings dreamy experimental electronica, blending beats with spacious guitar. With Enoksson playing saxophone over percussion rhythms they manage to combine a sense of nostalgia with a clear effort to think forward. It works well with the layered mysterious vocals from Magnúsdóttir, singing in both English and her native language. The future certainly looks bright for this young and upcoming band.
Music NDF 2014 - pag 23
Wintergatan (SE) The Swedish multi-instrumentalists that make up Wintergatan are very clear: “It’s about music. And musical instruments. And sounds and melodies.” The four band members have a will of their own and go by their own set rules. They use an unconventional but surprising collection of instruments, of which some are homebuilt, such as a glockenspiel, a harp, a vibraphone and a modulin. The band produces an energetic sound which makes you swing between Avant Garde electronica and traditional Scandinavian folk music, while they mix it up with a bit of rock or some extremely danceable beats! Wintergatan is renowned for their amazing live shows, and this will be their first time in the Netherlands. It’s a scoop! Music NDF 2014 - pag 24

LIVESTOCK (NO/NL) LIVESTOCK is presenting parts of their performance ‘et oljeeventyr’ (an oil adventure) which was produced and performed in Norway in 2011 and 2013. For a long time the concept ‘the Norwegian oil adventure’ (a well known phrase in Norway) has connected industry and politics with metaphors from Norwegian history, mythology and folklore. Fact and fiction, myth and own life experience blend in a poetic company presentation where the difference between oil, nationality and art is less important than how it is being sold. Susanne and Tijmen, one being Norwegian and the other Dutch, will show selected parts of the performance that have been translated and adapted for a non-Norwegian audience and talk about the topics presented in the piece.
