Editor’s note! Copenhagen has recently been voted best city to live in by Monocle (yet again), and the Danes are consistently at the top of UN’s ranking of global happiness. It has an enviable quality of life, a strong focus on work-life balance, fantastic cuisine, cutting-edge designers, easy-going and fun-loving citizens, world-class architecture, lots of green spaces, and beaches. The city can be explored by bike in a day, and you’ll get a taste of its richness and glory. Copenhagen is lively, charming, clean, safe and all about ‘hygge’. There is something special about Copenhagen, and it’s hard to put it in words. A day in the city will convince you; you’d probably want to be a part of it, just like I do. And you’d wish you could call it home. Here, I made a selection of some of the best places in Copenhagen I believe every design and interiors fan should visit. This guide, I hope, will help you discover an amazing city, and inspire you to pack your bag, and go! for a caeine fix" Lagkagehuset! With a strong focus on taste and freshness, this bakery concept is very popular among locals, who will not hesitate to wait in line for freshly baked bread and delicious coffee. Coffee Co)ective" Coffee Collective is a specialty coffee micro roastery, with a goal to offer quality coffee from sustainable production and to improve lives of farmers in coffee producing countries. While the flagship store is in Frederiksberg, you’ll find their coffee at numerous stores around town. It has a simple Danish interior and furniture by Søren Ulrich. Enjoy your coffee while walking around in the nearby flowery Assistens Cemetery, where famous Danes are buried such as Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. Central Hotel & Café! With only five indoor seats, this is Copenhagen’s smallest coffee shop. It is located in the hip neighborhood of Frederiksberg, and has a cozy and warm atmosphere. It serves delicious pastries, old-fashioned milkshakes and an awesome banana split. It is also the world’s smallest hotel, with one small, tastefully decorated room above the café. for tasty smørrebrød " Royal Café A perfect place to recharge your batteries after a shopping spree! Tucked between the luxurious Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen, the Royal Café serves a culinary treat: Smushi – Inspired by the attention to details of Japanese chefs, Rud Christiansen created this sushi sized version of the traditional Danish smørrebrød. Aamaans " Make sure you try a smørrebrød at least once during your stay in Denmark, and one of the best places to do so is at Aamaans. Honoring good craftsmanship and traditions, with a modern twist, they have a great variety of ‘open sandwiches’, with fresh ingredients. Radio" Owned by Claus Meyer, co-creator of world famous Noma, Radio offers creative small courses composed of premium plant-based seasonal ingredients, in a contemporary, but unpretentious, urban setting. Geist" Firm SPACE Copenhagen worked closely with chef Bo Bech to create a unique, flamboyant and contrasting interior. Relae" Rumor has it that Relae is the place “where the chefs at Noma eat on a day off.” Whether or not this is true, Relae is definitely worth a detour. Amass" Amass is one of the latest (July 2013) and hottest eatery in Copenhagen, and is the brainchild of Matt Orlando, former chef at Noma. His goal is to provide food that is “spontaneous, fresh, exciting and thought provoking.� The restaurant is situated in an old tool depot by the harbor. Höst" Here you’ll get a quality meal at a great price, in a simple and tasteful interior created by firm Norm Architects, design house Menu, and Cofoco. Following a rustic and minimalist vision, the space is cozy, with raw materials like wood, concrete and wool. The blue, white and grey dinnerware pieces were exclusively created by Norm and Menu for Höst. It recently won two prestigious Restaurant & Bar Design Award in London. Read more here. Isbens" Probably one of your best budgetfriendly options in Copenhagen, Isbens is a true gem. It is homey and cozy, hip and full of character. The communal spaces are inviting, the staff is very friendly, and you’ll find “the best gin and tonic in the world”, or so they say (we confirm: they are pretty good indeed!). Most rooms are small, but functional, and tastefully decorated. Isbens is also very well located, a few steps away from the food hall Torvehallerne (see p.37) and Nørreport Station. Hotel d’Angleterre" D’Angleterre is the oldest hotel in Denmark, built in 1755. a local: "Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen!
Together with Kasper Rønn, Jonas founded NORM Architects in 2008 and created award-wining interiors, architecture and products. He lives just north of Copenhagen (see his house here!), in a small old fisherman’s village called Vedbæk. The town is a quite and calm little place with woods, water and fields around it overlooking the Island of Veen and Sweden. His studio is located near Nørreport, one of the main transportation hubs in Copenhagen, on the top floor of an old printing company, overlooking the rooftops of the old city.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Copenhagen?! I love that it city is so connected, harmonious, homogenic and clean without being boring. There is both a conservative approach to guard the historic elements of the city and at the same time a creative and innovative approach to city planning. It is indeed a city for walking and biking and I really appreciate all the initiatives to get the cars out of the city center. It is also filled with green areas and the city is interesting for foodies, fashionistas and design lovers. I also feel that in the recent 10 years the city has become more centered towards the water (the harbour) and the different boroughs and areas have become more intertwined and connected with new bridges, biking lanes and pedestrian streets. The city is definitely most fun in the summertime and there are so many great cafes, restaurants and bars – more popping up all the time. Also new areas as Jægersborggade and Elmegade on Nørrebro, Istedgade and the Meatpacking district (Kødbyen) on Vesterbro, and Værnedamsvej between Frederiksberg and Vesterbro, are really cool with small independent shops. Shops that are really worth a visit in the small bookshop Cinnober – close to my studio and Playtype - a font store on Værnedamsvej selling typefaces and the Normann Copenhagen design store in Østerbro. And then of course the Höst restaurant that we designed for Cofoco and Menu, that just won the main prize in London last week for best looking restaurant in the world. Q: Iconic buildings in the city:! There are new attempts to make Iconic and large scale buildings in Copenhagen, even though we are pretty conservative – but most of them are not that well designed and executed, unfortunately. One building that is interesting however is the new Playhouse which is a spectacular building in a quite way and very tactile. In opposition to many of the other new buildings along the waterfront, where some of them a nice too, they areas around the playhouse actually attracts life. I really like it. Then of course you have the Arne Jacobsen SAS Royal hotel and the National Bank – both of them modernist buildings in high quality materials. There is the WM bjerget by BIG, where the wooden part of the building with all the terraces is quite interesting. You have all the old historic building like the nice little tower – Rundetårn – that I can see from my studio rooftop. Q: What are your MUST SEEs in the city?! Besides the places mentioned above, here are a few more: DAC, Design Museeum of Denmark, Louisiana, Thorvaldsen Museum, Church of our lady (the exterior is pure, simple and beautiful), Christians borg, Gammel Strand, HAY, Søren Rose Studio, Stilleben, Butik for Borddøkning, Illums Bolighus, Dansk Made for rooms, Amass, Balthazar, Noma, Oyster and Grill, Toldbden, The Standard (soon to be open), Nimb Hotelbar, Geist, Kødbyens fiskebar, Langelinje Pavillion, and Knippels Bridge for the very interesting houses on the bridge. 41

Meyer-Lavigne is a Copenhgagen-based duo composed of Kristine Meyer and Sabine Lavigne. They mainly design a wide variety of products for the home, all in different materials. Besides their own line of ceramics, they take on assignments from other companies such as Stilleben. Meyer-Lavigne is situated in the old Meatpacking District of Copenhagen that is now a melting pot of designers, architects, photographers, galleries, gastronomic trendsetters, etc.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Copenhagen?! Copenhagen is a beautiful old city, filled with old houses, towers and squares. A summer night in Copenhagen is very magical, maybe because the winter period is so long and dark. We all love the light and every year the first spring light transforms the city to a giant wave of positive vibration. Beautiful girls on their bicycles in summer dresses, couples in love kissing along the canals and kids having fun in the open air swimming pools in the harbor. Q: Describe your perfect 24hrs in the city.! First of all, rent some bikes. Morning coffee at the Coffee Collective in Jægersborggade. Explore the street, and buy some good bread at Meyers Bakery also on Jægersborggade. Bike through the Assisitents Cemetery where H.C Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard are buried, go to Elmegade for nice clothes, bike along Vesterbro and explore the coolest part of the city. Lunch at PatePate. Take your bike with the harbor bus to sail to Christianshavn and take a tour on Christiania. Here you can enjoy refreshments at the Café Månefiskeren. There are free concerts sometimes in the afternoon, so check that out! Go back to Vesterbro via Islandsbrygge and Bryggebroen (the Brygge Bridge). Eat your dinner at Fiskebaren in the meatpacking district, go to the bar Mikkeller in Viktoriagade for some really good beer and finish the night at Vega Nightclub. Q: What are your MUST SEEs in the city?! Copenhagen has a good mix of both old and new. For old buildings, we recommend the Danish Exchange built in 1620; Amalienborg, where the queen lives (yes we have a castle and a queen in the middle of the city); take a walk especially in Christianshavn, with its charming old houses by the canal. For modern architecture go and see the new royal Danish playhouse, situated by the waterside. Don’t miss the Black Diamond, the VM Mouantain, 8Tallet. And for crazy alternative houses built with fantasy, take a walk in Christiania! Q: Any other info about Copenhagen or Denmark you would like to share?! Don’t miss the Art Museum Louisiana, the Deer Park in Klampenborg, the North of Sealand for excellent beaches ( Tisvilde, Hornbæk, Gilleleje……), and Møns klint for beautiful nature. Visit Sweden for a day. If you really got time to explore Denmark, a visit to Skagen is a must. Incredible, beautiful light that has inspired many Danish painters and a sea where Skagerak and Kattegat meets. Denmark is full of small, cozy islands worth visiting.……. We could go on, and on, and on....!

Rikke is a talented stylist, decorator and visual merchandiser. She is passionate about design, art, illustration and graphic design. She grew up in a small town in Jutland and always knew she would eventually live in Copenhagen. When she made the move a few years later, she fell in love with the city and felt at home immediately. Fourteen years later, she is still inspired and she is “here to stay”. She recently bought a house in Frederiksberg where she lives with her husband and daughter. Q: What is your favorite thing about Copenhagen?! What I love must of diversity and versatility. The city is divited into areas that are all very different. Vesterbro, Nørrebro, Østerbro, Frederiksberg, Christianshavn, Holmen a some of the areas and the feeling and street environment really changes within a few blocs. I it almost impossible to choose a favorite area because they all offers so much. Q: What are your MUST SEEs in the city?!

As a Interior stylist I must recommends some of the in my opinion top design stores in Copenhagen: • Beau Marché: New timeless industrial design and french vintage objects and furniture. They also have the nicest little café inside the alley where you can have a glass of wine and a shopping break. • Hay house: Flagshipstore for the Danish design brand Hay. Scanniavian furniture and a lot of accessories with prices starting from 2 dollars. A must see for first time visitors. • Stilleben: The most beautiful ceramics, posters etc. carefully chosen. Epitome of good taste. • Illums Bolighus: A big department store that will give you a good idea of what Danish design is all about. • Normann Copenhagen flagship store: Flagshipstore for the Danish design brand Normann Copenhagen and they also have a lot of other brands. Huge store with a lot of inspiration. • Dansk Made for Rooms: Danish design Store with more nice little shops in the area. In the other end of the street there is some good second hand shops and if you travel with children a big playground called Skydebanehaven. Ask for way, it is hidden! • Dora: A VERY nice shop with a special mix of Danish design classics and a lot of vintage objects. The hole street is a must see! Great atmosphere, so many nice shops, cafés and nice people. Try the Granola café just across the street, they have the best breakfast/lunch in a 50´s atmosphere. • Bob Noon: A little hidden gallery and art shop with drawings from talented Danish illustrators and artists. Originals as well as prints so it is not expensive. • Designer Zoo: Ceramics, ceramics, ceramics from some of the best Copenhagen ceramists. • Rabens Atelier: An Asian inspired home décor and furniture store with a twist of an industrial roughness to it. • NORD: A Interior shop with all the latest trends and traditional design objects in a lovely mix. Mumuland: A little shop with nice design accessories in porcelain, wood and textile. • Corfixen: More ceramics, but worth a visit if you are in the area. • CMYK: A basement filled with Illustrations and drawings with prizes that everyone can afford. Jægersborggade has a lot of small shops and cafés and there is a green area with a big playground at the end. • Munk: Hand-picked design, who matches that special Nordic feeling we love.

Bjørn Agertved is a Danish artist whose style is characterized by the use of bright colors, vivid strokes, lettering and prints on canvas. His “minimal yet explosive graphical style” has made its mark on the international art scene. For the last 16 years he has been living in Christianshavn, a “bohemian part of town, where all the sailors and the boat builders used to live.”
Q: Describe your perfect 24hrs in the city.! A perfect Saturday, I would get up early and make some breakfast for my son and girlfriend, then go to the local playground to play for an hour. Then we would go to Sweet Treat for a coffee and to read the newspaper, followed up by an hour drive to the Louisanna museum of modern of art. I would spend a few hours there, and then I’d go back to the city for a late lunch, maybe at café Victor. I’ll walk around and visit some of my favorite shops like Rue Verte. At night, after my son is put to bed, I would call a babysitter to look after him so my girlfriend a I would meet up with friends and go to a nice restaurant like Falernum, followed by some cocktails… Q: Iconic buildings in the city:! Børsen (former Copenhagen stock exchange), the new Opera house, the black diamond (the national library), the Blå planet (the national aquarium) and Vor Fralser Church at Christianshavn. Q: What are your MUST SEEs in the city?! For restaurants, I recommend Noma (voted 3 years in a row as the world’s best restaurant), Kadeau, and Kong Hans, MASH, HØST, Falernum, “LeLe” for Vietnamese, “Mother” for Pizzas. In the summer-time go for “Bådudlejningen” at Christianshavn right on the canals or “Morgenstedet” at Christiania to sit in the restaurant’s garden and eat organic and vegetarian food. People are often singing or dancing around you! For hotels, if you want something classy and stylish, go for Skt. Petri or Nimb. If you want something different and unique, go for CPH Living at Islands Brygge (a former ferry boat). For shopping, try Rue Verte, 2 great shops in the streets Studiestræde and Larsbjørnsgade. Make sure to visit Louisiana and the DAC. I also love coffee at Sweat treat, Christianshavn, and the Newgallery. Q: Any other info about Copenhagen or Denmark you would like to share?! The best time to visit is in the summertime or around Christmas where the is light and snow a around. A beautiful sign with a peaceful atmosphere…

Anders Schønnemann is a well-known Danish photographer. He lives 10-15 minutes north of Copenhagen, near the sea, and commutes to the capital city everyday for work. “I love that just after a short drive it gets more quiet and calm.” Make sure to check out his fab portfolio!
Q: Describe your perfect 24hrs in the city.! I would start with breakfast at Granola with my wife and to small girls, then we would take a walk to Torvehallerne and buy food for the perfect Sunday lunch. Then we would buy a coffee at Coffee Collective and drink it in kings garden followed by a little nap in the sun while the girls are playing. Lunch would be enjoyed with good friends at Aamaans Smoerebroed. In the afternoon I would take a long run by the ocean. Dinner would be enjoyed at my favorite Italian resturant ‘Enomania’ with my friend and food writer Matthew Fort. Q: What are your MUST SEEs in the city?! There are SO many to choose from: Take on your best shoes go for a walk. Vesterbro, Oesterbro and Noerrebro are the most interesting parts of Copenhagen with a very different feel to it. Q: Iconic buildings in the city:! The Black dimond ( public library ), The round tower, and the newly build operahouse and Amalienborg castle where the queen lives Q: What makes Copenhagen stand out from other capital cities?! It’s such a small city with only 1mil people living there. You can walk to almost everything and the restaurants are amazing… We have 13 Michelin stared restaurants including Noma with was the worlds best for 3 years in a row (now at nr 2 ). Q: What is your favorite thing about Copenhagen?! Torvehallerne is a fairly new food marked located in the city, and we go there in the weekends to shop for the best meat and vegetables. Q: Any other info about Copenhagen or Denmark you would like to share?! Take the train to Humlebæk station ( 45 min ) and visit Lousiana Museum.
