“LEDA AND THE SWAN” SCULPTURE BY STIG LINDBERG Stig Lindberg’s expressive sculpture, made from carrara stoneware, depicts the mythological story of Queen Leda being seduced by the Greek god Zeus in the form of a swan. Rapture and longing are conveyed in Stig Lindberg’s humorous and amiable way. The sculpture was made in Gustavsberg’s Studio Handen in the 1940s, as one of the exclusive designs that is typical of that period. ”Leda and the Swan” exemplifies Stig Lindberg’s playful use of classic themes in his modernist designs, expressed in a light and dreamy way. CABINET BY OSCAR NILSSON This unique cabinet was exhibited at the Swedish Contemporary Decorative Arts fair in The Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1927. The exhibition followed the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925, where the Swedish pavilion had been a huge success. Sweden was invited as a single country to exhibit in New York, something that spurred great interest in Swedish contemporary design and arts and crafts in the United States. The exhibition also included pieces by Anna Petrus, Carl Hörvik, Wilhelm Kåge and Märta Måås-Fjetterström, among others. Master cabinet maker built in palisander. Exquisitely decorated front and sides, with a meander border and classic ornaments. The inlays in the centre of the cabinet shows a fountain, where one can easily imagine the movement of the water. Contrasting black lacquered column legs on a palisander base. Beautiful, discreet ornaments close to the tops of the columns.
