Festival Stories
FESTIVAL STORIES
For 2019 we explore the contemporary issue of BORDER CROSSINGS beginning with our Festival Launch, The Journey (p6). Chris Bullzini’s spectacular traverse of the city skyline celebrates stories of Norfolk & Norwich and the people who make the city.
Stories, like festivals, teach us things about our lives and those of others, they let us explore new worlds as yet unimagined. They give us an understanding and respect for other places and cultures, and they help us interpret the changing world around us. We’ve woven a few stories through our programme this year – giving you the chance to navigate a few undiscovered worlds…
In the middle of the Cold War, and a period of communist comradery between Cuba and West Africa, seven young Malian musicians were invited to Havana by Castro’s government. Their musical journey embodies how artists travel the world for cultural exchange and is celebrated in a special UK appearance by Las Maravillas de Mali (p11).
«
In Tenebrae’s (p12) fifteenth year, a unique new choral work in Owain Park, Footsteps, forms the central element to their Cathedral concert. Following the journey of a lonely traveller, constantly moved-on, it explores themes of solitude, upheaval and journeying. A Festival co-commission, Wild Longings (p21) digs deep into the creative act of rooting and uprooting as we learn how to nurture both plants and people during a time of cultural upheaval.
Festival Launch! Friday 10 May

What do your eyes see before you? Our Festival questions your perceptions, flipping the world on its head to look at it from a surprising new angle. We delve into the twilight world of MAGIC AND ILLUSION in a number of shows this year. The bizarre and the supernatural combine in the beautiful Bells & Spells (p24), where kleptomania and enchanted objects merge in a surreal, humorous and absurd nether world.
Festival Stories 5
Vincent Gambini is a magician who is actually disillusioned with illusion. In The Chore of Enchantment (p21) he tackles, with talk and trickery, how magicians are expected to manufacture a sense of amazement when they’re faced with such widespread disenchantment from the world at large.
In the culmination of a three year project with Stopgap Dance, Frippery (p9) brings this acclaimed company together with around thirty local people as they explore identity and celebrate some amazing clothing! We also hand over the Festival for a day to a group of young people to curate their own programme in Engage (p33). They challenge the current socio-political climate with words, ideas and debate.
Dougie Evans
As we increasingly invite you to shape the Festival and discover our Festival Spirit, we’ll be offering you more and more opportunities to not just consume the Festival but also be a part of it. MAKE & DO sees community collaboration and participation. News News News (p21) is a topical broadcast made for adults by children. The show brings to the stage the city’s current affairs, all seen through the eyes of a ten year old. PLAYING UP (p31) gives children and grown-ups a chance to create their own Live Art.
Richard Haughton
Another Festival commission, Will Teather’s Globes (p40) blur not only the boundaries between painting and sculpture, but also the boundaries between art and reality. In a trail across city landmarks, you’ll begin to see things just a little bit differently…

National Centre for Writing, Dragon Hall, 7.30pm
Guardian journalist Aida Edemariam and award-winning writer Sinéad Gleeson present two intimate portrayals of ‘ordinary’ women who find boldness and bravery within the constraints of their bodies, time and place. Examining art, memory, gender, grief, and our ways of seeing, their writing is both deeply personal and universal in its resonance.
Eavesdrop on an intimate conversation between two of the most influential and critically-acclaimed writers of our day: Man Booker Prize judge and nominee Sarah Hall and New York Times/Paris Review contributor and Nabokov expert Lila Azam Zanganeh. Together, they will indulge in a no-holds-barred discussion of sex, death and everything in between.
Join us for an hour of empowering conversation and beautiful poetry from Brazilian poet, activist and artist Adelaide Ivánova and her translator Rachel Long. Behind the Scenes
BEHIND THE SCENES
While the Festival explodes across Norwich and Norfolk for 17 days each May, our work goes on year-round with communities across the county. We believe in the importance of creativity to everyone, every day, no matter their background, and that this inspires learning by its very nature. We help support that belief through a number of major programmes…
«
CREATIVE LEARNING Our Creative Learning programme encompasses participation, engagement, education and skills development – all with the aim of enabling lifelong creativity for people of all ages.
Paul Harrison
Nick Read
The programme is called ‘Take Part’ and last year brought amazing creative opportunities to more than 4,500 people both at the Festival and across the year.
Behind the Scenes 43
The Take Part Programme has three strands: Take Part: Schools – A bespoke series of often curriculum-led projects offering pupils from across Norwich and Norfolk the chance to engage with the arts through workshops, talks and subsidised tickets. If your school is interested in our autumn term activities for 14yrs+ contact Sarah Witcomb, Creative Learning Manager: takepart@nnfestival.org.uk Take Part: Festival – Outstanding opportunities for the local community to work with leading artists and performers in the creation of shows presented at the Festival itself. Stopgap Dance’s Frock (p9), News News News (p21), Engage! (p33), and The Journey (p6) all feature participation from local people in our Take Part: Festival programme.
FESTIVAL BRIDGE Part of Norfolk & Norwich Festival and funded by Arts Council England and the Department for Education, Festival Bridge is one of ten national Bridge organisations working to connect children and young people with great arts opportunities in their region. Our team bring schools and cultural organisations together across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Peterborough and Suffolk. The Bridge also support and develop Artsmark and Arts Award.

Take Part: Intergenerational – Providing wonderful opportunities to bring together young children with adults, in particular older people. This takes place during the Festival, in our Meet Me at the Spiegeltent programme (p31), and in care homes and day centres across the county in an innovative intergenerational project, Puppet Portraits.
VOLUNTEER… AND JOIN THE TEAM!
‘Volunteering with NNF has become part of who I am.’ 2018 volunteer Volunteers are central to our ‘Festival Spirit’ – the lifeblood of the Festival. More than 100 people each year join our team to help deliver you this annual extravaganza. From stewarding and providing event support to administration and assisting with workshops, being a part of our Volunteer Team is a great way to meet new friends, gain new skills and see behind the scenes of an international Festival.
Support Our Work
SUPPORT OUR WORK We believe in the importance of creativity to everyone, every day. We present truly exceptional art experiences at the Festival and support artists at a local, national and international level to create daring new work for our audiences. Through our Take Part programme (p43) we also deliver a vital and lively programme of education and community work – bringing those who would not normally have the opportunity into contact with world-class art and performance. Culture is a vital part of what makes Norwich and Norfolk such outstanding places to live. Our supporters help bring those amazing cultural experiences to more and more lives.

ABOUT US
«
Norfolk & Norwich Festival shares exceptional arts experiences across East England. We lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in our community to make our part of the world a great place to live, work and play. The Festival takes place in Norwich and around Norfolk for 17 days each May. The programme is multi-artform, contemporary, international and audience-centred. The Festival is distinctive because we collaborate with artists – from down the road and around the world – to explore the unique physical and cultural identities of our place and to make art which is meaningful to the lives of our audiences. The organisation has been an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation since April 2012 and is one of 10 Bridge Organisations with a mandate to develop arts and cultural opportunities for children and young people in the East of England.
