The boldest and most ambitious work yet from the no-nonsense, DIY circus company that took Norwich by storm in 2019. By exposing the inner workings of the world-class acrobat, they unveil the magic that is Gravity & Other Myths’ most precious commodity; genuine human connection between each other and our audience.
Australian contemporary circus company Gravity & Other Myths return to the Festival after their runaway success in 2019. In this interactive workshop, Gravity & Other Myths artists will be on hand to help young people try their hand at circus performance. This is a great chance to find out how these acclaimed artists came to establish themselves in the circus world, while gaining valuable communication and movement skills.

A multisensory, participatory theatre experience for children in EYFS and KS1. Join the Sky Explorers in their flying machine as they take you on a journey to investigate the mysterious world in the sky! Designed for a class at a time, this magical theatre adventure transports children into the world of the story, providing a powerful hook to inspire future learning. This unique experience explores themes of friendship, difference and curiosity in the world around us. Each performance is followed by a workshop where children are supported to re-enact the story for themselves and teachers will be provided with resources and support to make the most of the experience back in the classroom. Kaboodle Theatre are passionate about creating welcoming, meaningful and exciting theatre experiences that are accessible for young children with a wide range of needs and abilities.

This is a chance to see award-winning dance documentary Artificial Things from pioneering company Stopgap Dance. Artificial Things won the ‘Best Screen Choreography for over 15 minutes’ category at dancescreen 2019 in Wuppertal, Germany. In this fluid dance film, director Sophie Fiennes collaborates with choreographer Lucy Bennet to reimagine Stopgap Dance Company’s performance piece Artificial Things. Stopgap Dance Company create exhilarating dance productions for national and international touring. They employ disabled and non-disabled artists who find innovative ways to collaborate. GCSE dance students Groups up to 25 Tue 19 May, with option to attend film screening on Mon 18 May Half-day (3 hours 30 minutes) £5 per student Dance workshop at your school, with the option to attend film screening at The Forum, Norwich
This is an exciting opportunity for GCSE (or equivalent) dance students to have world renowned integrated dance company, Stopgap Dance visit their school and deliver a dance workshop. Students are also offered the opportunity to watch Artificial Things, an award winning dance documentary following Stopgap Dance, as well as participating in the dance workshop. The screening is at The Forum, Norwich on Monday 18 May, or if that’s not possible we can screen the film at your school in your own time. This workshop offers the chance for your students to meet Stopgap artists, and as such is for experienced dancers. This workshop has been designed to compliment the GCSE curriculum.

In this workshop, young people will explore the history of folk music with musician and performer Gemma Khawaja. Students will learn about historical & contemporary folk musicians and singers, instrument traditions of the British Isles, as well as exploring local folk songs, performers and instruments. The aim of the session is for pupils to write their own song inspired by folk genre themes and melodies and perform it back to an assembly of students, teachers and parents. Developing musical knowledge and performance skills, the young people will earn their Arts Award Discover. In addition to the core workshop group, we are offering schools the opportunity for an additional group of students to also gain their Arts Award Discover through sharing an introductory Q&A session with musician Gemma, all facilitated for free by Norfolk & Norwich Festival.

After the session, the young people will be offered the opportunity (through Norfolk Music Hub) to learn an instrument, starting with whole class tuition which can develop to individuals learning an instrument in 1-1 lessons. We hope to work with the schools and students over a number of years so that we can map their music journey year on year, offering more opportunities for developing a love for music and performance with this project.

Tim Sandys is joining us to deliver a number of workshops while he visits with his current exhibition CITIZEN at Norwich University of the Arts. The workshops place emphasis on drawing fundamentals in a relaxed, playful atmosphere. The various exercises are intended to promote loose mark-making and imagery that emerges from direct observation rather than prescribed or precise illustration. The exercises challenge assumptions, loosen entrenched habits and provide a new perspective to drawing, painting and 2D imagery. Students will explore observational drawing vs knowledge of the subject, people and faces as forms, movement in 2D images as well as tone and shadow. Workshops will consist of drawing exercises, instruction and informal talk, using charcoal and paper supplied by the artist.

Get inspired by other young minds to create artwork for a new exhibition by and for children and young people in Norfolk. As part of an outreach roadshow professional artists and YNA members will visit your school with a selection of resources to help you get inspired by 900 years of heritage beneath the Undercroft space in Norwich market, where the exhibition will be held. Be part of this site specific experience, exploring centuries of stories, objects and people and create a piece of art to submit. Come and see your work digitally displayed as part of the youth-led curated space from 18 June until 18 July 2020.

Using several looping devices and a range of instruments, young people will create soundscapes and sonic environments using their voices and the things around them.

They will explore more musical structures, using looping to create beats, phrases and songs. With live looping, young people can make patterns from whatever is in front of them or what sounds they want to make.

Young people will bring a selection of films and a whole bunch of objects to life, making their own soundtrack. This workshop has a strong sensory element as it requires handling and ‘performing’ with materials such as sand and water.

Students will go on their own arts journey with artist and facilitator Kate Munro in this playful and engaging workshop. The workshop can be adapted to fit a theme you are currently exploring in your setting or it can be themed on one of our Festival artists, Anish Kapoor, Tim Sandys, Cristina Iglesias or Laurence Edwards for example. Students will talk about art and create a new piece of work with artist and facilitator Kate Munro, all of which will be tailored to suit students’ needs, and discussed in advance of the workshop.
Led by Desmond Brett, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art (Sculpture), this session is designed for educators to consider fundamental 3D techniques through the exploration of materials and processes associated with sculptural practice. It is intended to encourage greater integration of sculptural practice within the classroom and wider curriculum. Participants are encouraged to be experimental with material through handling, playing and testing in order to develop an understanding of how sculpture can be applied across diverse contexts, applications and audiences.

Prizes for the competition include mentoring opportunities, and the chance to have your work performed and published.
