AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT AT A GLANCE Dear Parents, Norfolk Collegiate’s after-school enrichment activities are designed to provide your child with the opportunity to participate in programs that will challenge him or her. After all, we want to inspire your child’s passion for learning in and out of the classroom. As such, we are offering to a variety of options for our Oaks. In the next few pages, you’ll see a brief description for each of the enrichment classes offered during the 2015-16 school year. There will be three sessions – fall, winter and spring. Some classes will run all sessions and some are only offered during one of the sessions. Each vendor and class has a minimum and maximum enrollment, so please enroll as early as possible to ensure occur. Due to the school calendar and teacher work-days there will NOT be some classes each week, here are the exact dates of each class based on the day of week. TECHNOLOGY BRICKHEADZ STEAM LAB (GRADES 1-5) Has your child ever wanted to motorize his or her LEGO® creations? Now he or she can. Brickheadz Steam Lab will engage your child in a STEM program that explores the foundations of construction, engineering, communication, mathematics and physics by participating in hands-on LEGO® building activities. This exciting program provides the opportunity for curious minds to explore motion, mechanisms, structures, friction and force. Not only will program leaders expand STEAM concepts, but they also will focus on teamwork and critical thinking skills. Fall BRICKHEADZ ENGINEERING 101 & INTRO TO ROBOTICS (GRADES 1-5) Has your child ever wanted to bring his or her LEGO® creation to life? Or add sound effects? This exciting program provides the opportunity for curious minds to explore motion, mechanisms, structures, friction and force. In addition to our simple and motorized machine curriculum, Engineering 101 utilizes the LEGO® WeDo™ Robotics system, which allows children to build robotic creations that can be customized through a computer program to add sound, motion through sensor technology and interaction. BRICKHEADZ ROBOTICS EV3 CHALLENGE (GRADES 3-5) This session combines classic LEGO® building with the world of robotics, using motors, sensors and software. Your students will learn how to design and program a robot that can perform all kinds of tasks! This fun and challenging camp will introduce your adventurous LEGO® enthusiast to the world of robotics with an easy-to-learn program that also will teach your child basic programming logic. Space is limited as only one camper is permitted per MINDSTOMS EV3 robot kit! Spring
CREATIVE COLOR ME MINE (K-2, 3-5) Color Me Mine is super-fun, crazy creative and an awesome educational experience in which your child will have the opportunity to work on a different clay project each week. Color Me Mine will provide materials and instructions for all projects, too. You child can participate in all eight sessions or individual classes on select dates. More information will be made available before the winter session. Please see attached information for individual class dates. Winter (K-2) Spring (3-5)
ACADEMICS CHESS (GRADES 2-5) Championship Chess presents a systematic and fun way to build your child’s math, reading and problem-solving skills while playing chess. Studies show that chess improves those skills and Championship Chess’ methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Classes include instruction, as well as chess play and guided analysis. This class is led by Kala Dawson of Championship Chess. The registration fee will include an instructional booklet. A minimum of 10 students is needed for the class. Fall, Winter, Spring
ATHLETICS GIRLS ON THE RUN (GRADES 4-5) Girls on the Run is a fun, life-changing program for girls in fourth and fifth grade. Through the program, your daughter will meet twice a week and train for a 5K running event while also enjoy self-esteem-building and uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Registration starts Aug. 31, and the program begins on Sept. 21. It concludes with a 5k race on Dec. 12. You must complete an online registration form with Girls on the Run at http://gotrhr.org/registration. Fall and Spring YOGA (GRADES K-5) Yoga is a great way for your child to wind down from the week, learn new poses and gain relaxation skills with Rita Woods, owner of Young Yogis Yoga. Woods will help your child with his or her confidence, relaxation, concentration and fitness through yoga every Thursday afternoon. All grade levels are welcome; however, students need to wear comfortable clothes and must use a “Young Yogis Yoga” mat, which will be for sale on the first day for $25. Fall, Winter, Spring KARATE (GRADES K-5) The Martial Arts Enrichment Course, offered in collaboration with Norfolk Karate Academy, will teach your child the basic stances, kicks, blocks and strikes used in karate and Gracie Jiu Jitsu self-defense techniques. The course also teaches verbal skills for dealing with bullies. Your child will leave with an increased confidence and greater self-esteem, as he or she learns how to respond to intimidating and aggressive behavior. All students are dual-enrolled for additional classes at Norfolk Karate Academy for the duration of the course. Successful completion of the course will also result in the awarding of a stripe
on your child’s belt. If your child completes all three courses offered during the school year, he or she also is eligible for promotion to the next belt level. Students must have a uniform and are available for purchase of $35 if needed. Fall, Winter, Spring BEGINNER DANCE (GRADES K-2) Your child will learn the basics of ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop and musical theater in a fun, pressure-free environment under the guidance of Little Feet Dance Studio’s instructors. Classes will be offered to boys and girls. Ballet shoes are recommended; however, students’ attire may include leotards and tights or yoga pants and comfortable shirts to class. There will be a recital for students that participate in the spring. This will be 12 weeks in the fall and then two, eight-week sessions in the winter and spring. Fall, Winter, Spring ZUMBA/HIP HOP (GRADES 3-5) Your child will enjoy a great cardio workout while learning the basics of salsa, meringue, cumbia and reggae tone in this Latin dance fitness class. This is a great way to learn rhythm to fun and energetic music under the leadership of Little Feet Dance Studio. This class will also incorporate the fundamentals of hip-hop dance moves. Children should wear yoga pants and/or leggings and a comfortable shirt. No shoes are required at this time. Sessions are comprised of 12 weeks in the fall and two, eight-week sessions in the winter and spring. Fall, Winter, Spring SOCCER SHOTS (GRADES K-2) Soccer Shots is a uniquely designed program that will introduce soccer to your child in a fun, safe and controlled environment. The program will focus on individual skill, fitness and sportsmanship, while also introducing your child to the tactical elements of the game as he or she prepares to play on competitive teams. Soccer Shots is a national leader in youth soccer development with the innovative lesson plans that are tailored to the appropriate age group. No soccer gear needed and all equipment is provided by the program. Fall, Spring
INSTRUMENTAL STRINGS (GRADES 1-5) Weis Boyer has been providing beginner and advanced strings lessons in the violin, viola or cello at Norfolk Collegiate 23 years. A full-time violinist with the Virginia Symphony, Boyer also teaches our Oaks how to play their instruments and read music. Group and private lessons will be offered and are dependent on the student’s desired type and needs. Boyer is also available to assist with finding instruments to rent or buy as needed. Lessons will be scheduled after a completed registration form is received. For more information, please contact Weis Boyer at wcboyer@cox.net. PIANO (GRADES K-5) Playing the piano builds musical skills in children at an individual pace, and allows them to explore musical interests and talents outside the classroom. This program provides 30-minute, one-on-one private piano lessons for registered students. Students who are enrolled in piano lessons will take part in eight private lessons and two studio classes
(group performance), and will culminate with a recital in May. Ownership of a piano/keyboard at home, as well as a schedule that allows appropriate practice time at home, are important prerequisites for the program. SCHOOL OF ROCK GUITAR/BASS LESSONS (GRADES 1-5) School of Rock is a performance-based music school dedicated to inspiring children and adults of all ages to rock with timeless, classic rock music. School of Rock is excited to team up with Norfolk Collegiate to enhance your child’s love of music. School of Rock instructors will provide 30-minute private guitar and bass lessons for registered students. Students also will receive 12 lessons over the winter and spring terms of 2015. Students can bring their own guitar, or the instructor can provide one during lessons if needed. School of Rock has one simple goal: to teach students how to rock on stage and in life! ACORN ATHLETICS WEEKS NEW FOR THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR ... Norfolk Collegiate will have four scheduled Acorn Athletic weeks, where lower school students will be able to participate in a week-long, sports-specific clinic. Head coaches will lead the clinics with the help of upper school student-athletes. SPORTS: Lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, soccer, field hockey, baseball & softball DETAILS: One week after school (Monday-Friday from 3:15-4:15 p.m.) COST: $75 (Billed to student account) LOCATION: Lower School fields or gymnasium, 5429 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk DATES:
