ENRICHMENT AT A GLANCE This guide provides brief descriptions for the classes offered during the 2016-17 school year. There will be two sessions — fall and spring. Some classes will run all sessions and some classes are only offered during one of the sessions. Each vendor and class has a minimum and maximum enrollment, so please enroll as early as possible to ensure classes take place and your student can be included. All vendors will be represented on Thursday, Sept. 1, for Lower School Parents’ Night at 7 p.m. Due to the school calendar and teacher work-days there will NOT be some classes each week. TECHNOLOGY BRICKHEADZ STEAM LAB GRADES 2-5 TUESDAY
Brick builders will be engaged in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program that explores the foundations of construction, engineering, mathematics, physics, coding and programming by participating in exciting hands-on LEGO® building activities. Has your child ever wanted to motorize or program his or her LEGO® creations? Well, now he or she can! This class will utilize more than just LEGO® bricks. Spheros, Ozobots, LEGO® We Do 2.0 and more will be utilized! Not only do we target on expanding STEM concepts, but we also focus on teamwork and critical thinking skills.
ACADEMIC CHESS
GRADES 2-5 THURSDAY
Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build your child’s chess skills while students play and learn through instruction. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving skills and our methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Classes, which are led by Kala Dawson of Championship Chess, include instruction, chess play and guided analysis.
ATHLETICS GIRLS ON THE RUN
ZUMBA/HIP HOP
A life-changing, fun program for girls in fourth and fifth grade, Girls on the Run meets twice a week and combines training for a 5K running event with self-esteem and uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Registration begins Aug. 31 and the program begins Sept. 26, and ends with 5k race on Dec. 18. You must complete an online registration form with Girls on the Run at http:// gotrhr.org/registration.
Zumba is Latin dance fitness during which your child will receive a great cardio workout while learning the basics of salsa, meringue, cumbia and reggae tone. This is a great way to learn rhythm to fun and energetic music under the leadership of Little Feet Dance Studio. This class also will incorporate the fundamentals of hip hop dance moves. Children should wear yoga pants and/or leggings and a comfortable shirt. No shoes required at this time.This class will run for 12 weeks.
KARATE
SOCCER SHOTS
Our martial arts enrichment course, offered in collaboration with Norfolk Karate Academy, will teach your child the basic stances, kicks, blocks and strikes used in karate along with self-defense techniques from Gracie Jiu Jitsu and verbal skills for dealing with bullies. The course objective is to increase confidence and self-esteem by teaching children how to respond to intimidating or aggressive behavior. All students are dual-enrolled for additional classes at Norfolk Karate Academy for the course duration. Successful completion of the course results in award of a stripe on the student’s belt. If the student completes all three courses offered during the school year, they are eligible for promotion to the next belt level. Students must have a uniform and are available for purchase of $35, if needed.
Soccer Shots is a uniquely designed program that will introduce soccer to your child in a fun, safe and controlled environment. The program focuses on individual skill, fitness and sportsmanship. Children will be introduced to tactical elements of the game as they prepare to play on competitive teams. Soccer Shots is a national leader in youth soccer development with the innovative lesson plans tailored to the distinct age-group. No soccer gear needed, as all equipment is provided by the program leaders.

BEGINNER DANCE KINDERGARTEN-GRADE 2 TUESDAY
Your child will learn the basics of ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop and musical theater. Your child will learn to dance in a fun, pressure-free environment in the beginner dance class led by instructors from Little Feet Dance Studio. Classes will be offered to boys and girls. Students may wear leotards and tights or yoga pants and comfortable shirts to class; however, ballet shoes are recommended. There will be a recital for students that participate in the spring. This class will run for 12 weeks.

YOGA
KINDERGARTEN-GRADE 5 TUESDAYS | FALL, SPRING
Rita Woods, owner of Young Yogis Yoga, will help your child with his or her confidence, relaxation, concentration and fitness through yoga every Thursday afternoon. All grades are welcome to come and wind down from the school week, learn new poses and gain valuable relaxation skills. Students will need to wear comfortable clothes and must use a “Young Yogis Yoga” mat which will be for sale on the first day of class for $25 if you do not already have a “Young Yogis Yoga” mat. INSTRUMENTAL STRINGS GRADES 1-5
For years, Weis Boyer has been teaching violin, viola and cello for beginning and advanced students at Norfolk Collegiate. During the lessons, students will learn how to play the instrument and read music simultaneously. Depending on your child’s needs and desired type, Boyer will offer group or private lessons. She also will be able to help students find instruments to rent or buy, as needed. Lessons will be scheduled after a completed registration form is received. Boyer has 23 years of experience with Collegiate and is a full-time violinist for the Virginia Symphony, as well as a member of Suzuki Teachers’ Association of Hampton Roads. PIANO
KINDERGARTEN-GRADE 5 MONDAY & WEDNESDAY
Each child enrolled in piano lessons will enjoy 30-minute, one-on-one private lessons. Students who are enrolled in piano lessons will take part
in eight private lessons and will culminate with a recital in May. Playing the piano builds musical skills in children at an individual pace, and allows students to explore musical interests and talents outside the classroom. Ownership of a piano or keyboard at home, as well as a schedule that allows for appropriate practice time at home, are important prerequisites. SCHOOL OF ROCK GRADES 1-5 TUESDAY
School of Rock is excited to team up with Norfolk Collegiate to enhance your child’s love of music. School of Rock instructors will provide 30 minute private guitar, bass and piano lessons for registered students. Your child will receive eight lessons over the fall term. ACORN ATHLETICS
We will have five scheduled Acorn Athletic weeks, where lower school students will be able to sign-up for a weeklong clinic in specific sports. These clinics will be lead by head coaches with the help of our high school players. Our goal is to reach out to the lower school and infuse an interest in specific sports at Norfolk Collegiate through a positive athletic experience. Join the fun and learn a new sport!
