LOWER SCHOOL

Dear Parents, Welcome to Norfolk Collegiate! We are excited that you are a part of our thriving Oak community! All of us at the Lower School would like to extend an open invitation for you to be an active and involved member of our family. I would like to emphasize the word family in the previous sentence. We truly are a family at Norfolk Collegiate, and we believe that it takes the whole family to educate our students. It’s through this threadline of a shared communal adventure, fueled by our experienced faculty, talented students and most importantly you – our parents – that all of us can grow and become lifelong learners together. However, the first step is getting to know who we are as a family. It is my honor to introduce to you our passionate learning community. We (students, faculty, staff and administration) are a community of learners, collaborators, givers, doers and thinkers. Our dynamic educators are dedicated daily in inspiring a love for learning and supporting a child’s inherent curiosity. The question, “Why?” is a question we constantly promote and love. It is through the “whys” that we create critical thinkers, risk takers and problem solvers. We are able to inspire these dynamic qualities by getting to truly know our students, noting their strengths and challenges, as well as what motivates them to succeed, no matter how high the expectation. We continually strive to educate the whole child that fosters academic and personal development for each and every individual. However, the most magical element of our community is our students. There is no typical Norfolk Collegiate student. Each student is an individual who is unique with gifts only they can offer. Our classrooms are bursting with budding writers, mathematicians, scientists, musicians, athletes, historians, artists and joy makers! We celebrate their uniqueness and strive to cultivate each student’s passion. Our scholars are empowered to take ownership of their own learning, challenged to work to the highest of their ability and encouraged to do their very best! While academics certainly play a vital role in their day, our students are also exhibiting such traits as compassion, empathy and courage so that they may pursue a life of integrity. We are a family, a community of Oaks! We strive to fill our Lower School with joyful learning that inspires excellence, excitement and exploration. We are excited to work alongside you with our progressive curriculum that will foster your child’s ability to meet the demands of the 21st century. Whether it is through technology tools such as iPads, iMacs and three-dimensional printers or our literacy programming (reader’s and writer’s workshop) or oneon-one and small group instruction or through our pursuit of project-based learning, your child will be receiving an innovative education at Norfolk Collegiate. We are thrilled to welcome you to our warm and caring community!

Go Oaks,

Cleteus Smith Head of Lower School Norfolk Collegiate 8

WELCOME! Sarah Hoover, music teacher Joining our little Oaks is Sarah Hoover, who will be leading the music education curriculum at the Lower School. Twice she has won the Alaska State National Association of Teachers of Singing Avocational Award at the lower and upper divisions. She is excited about incorporating themes and content to engage and encourage students’ musical growth. Aside from teaching, Hoover loves outdoor adventures including hiking, camping and kayaking. She is also very involved with musical theater and enjoys spending time with her 5-year-old son, Gabriel.

Michelle Kellam, administrative assistant Michelle Kellam will be greeting our littlest Oaks as she fulfills the role of Lower School administrative assistant. Working closely with Head of the Lower School Cleteus Smith, she will assure all functions to help the Lower School to run smoothly. Kellam is enthusiastic about joining Collegiate and is devoted to creating an environment for children that establishes lifelong-learning. She believes building a firm community is essential. Throughout her career, Kellam has taught at Saint Patrick Catholic School, Coventry Elementary School and Seaford Elementary School. She also volunteers her summers at Matthew Whaley Elementary and Coventry Elementary teaching summer academies. Aside from instructing, Kellam most recently welcomed her 5-month-old baby boy to the family.

Melissa Silverman, science teacher Melissa Silverman is no stranger to the Norfolk Collegiate family. She joined Norfolk Collegiate in 2006 as a substitute teacher and progressed to a fulltime instructor in 2012. This year, she will be taking on another new role as the a science teacher. MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL Dear Middle & Upper School Families, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2015-16 school year and amazing to realize that this year’s eighth graders are the class of 2020! Our ever-evolving community of learners (our teachers and administrators are life-long learners, too) seeks to continue the good things that our students accomplished and created last year. In the Upper School, our inaugural year of the AP Capstone™ program auspiciously begins with two, fully subscribed AP Language/AP Seminar courses taught by Judy Davis. We are the first independent school in Virginia to offer this program and are enthused about the possibilities it affords those students who wish to research and explore ideas, passions and projects in a more substantive way. Also in the Upper School, we are excited to build on the work students, faculty and our Student Government Association (SGA) accomplished last year in divining five Upper School Core Values – honor, perseverance, community, respect and responsibility – principles that especially our students believe uniquely represent our shared beliefs and understandings of who we are as Oaks. One of our tasks this year will be to develop a common language or definitions for these on which the Upper School community can agree. In our Middle School curriculum, and in addition to our middle/upper school after school coding program, we are substituting a coding/programming elective for what has formerly been a sixth-grade computer/iPad® class. We believe most of our young people are already adept at utilizing iPads® for presentations, note-taking and other school-based functions and that coding is more in line with their interests and relevant to their futures. Further, we have responded to last year’s student interest in the Model United Nations initiative by formally making this an elective class as well. The Middle School’s own Core Values – honesty, honor, respect, responsibility, effort and kindness – remain foundational to many of the concepts that teachers and students discuss in advisory groups on a weekly basis. This past year, both Middle and Upper School communities were profoundly and favorably impacted by Mr. Kirk Smalley’s (sfts.org) presentation on the importance of standing up for those less fortunate than us, and resultant from this Norfolk Collegiate Middle/Upper School applied for and now has its own chapter of Stand For the Silent. We are optimistic about this cross-divisional group’s ability to nurture an already strong school climate, with the goal of empowering all community members to feel included and respected.

Let’s Go Oaks!

Norfolk Collegiate introduces new AP Capstone™ Program, turf fields As we ready to open our doors for another exciting year, the faculty and staff of Norfolk Collegiate School are also looking forward to introducing an academic program and state-of-the-art facility that will continue to place Norfolk Collegiate at the forefront of our area’s schools. As we continue to infuse our curriculum with the technology to equip our 21st century learners, the introduction of the AP Capstone™ Program will also continue to challenge our students as they prepare to leave Norfolk Collegiate for the halls of higher education. For our student-athletes, the addition of our turf fields and lights will provide an opportunity to train and perform on state-of-the-art fields and in any weather condition.

AP CAPSTONE In the Upper School, the inaugural AP Capstone™ program will begin with two, fully enrolled AP Language/AP Seminar classes. This new program is not only an exciting academic opportunity for our students, but it is also the first opportunity for students in Hampton Roads to participate in this program, which locally is only offered at Norfolk Collegate School. The program offers our students the opportunity to take advantage of research and explore ideas, passions and projects in a more substantive way. It capitalizes on the strengths of Norfolk Collegiate’s current AP offerings to engage students in inquiry-based independent research, collaboration, and oral and written communication skills as they investigate contemporary issues and problems from multiple perspectives. Based on two foundational courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — the AP Capstone™ program offers highly qualified students the opportunity to earn either the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™ or the AP Capstone Diploma™.

TURF FIELDS AND LIGHTS Following the end of an exciting spring sports season this past May, students said farewell to the grass athletic fields behind the Middle and Upper School campus. Just weeks later, the school broke ground on its $2.6 million Turf Fields & Lights Capital Campaign. Throughout the summer, the grass was removed, houses were demolished, earth was leveled, curbs were formed and turf fields and state-of-the-art lights were installed. In three short months, the school transformed the fields and created a dynamic opportunity for our Oak studentathletes. The new fields and lights now will provide our student-atheletes with the opportunity to play in and after inclement weather. In addition, new scoreboards and bleachers don the fields, as well as a batting cage for our baseball and softball teams. The pre-lined fields also allow for greater opportunities for our surrounding community to rent the facility for competitions. 15
