With five uniquely designed centers of activity, “Summer under the Oak” has something to offer every member of your family, from adults to children, ages five and up. We invite you to review our centers, categorized by academic advancement, athletics, enrichment, experiential learning and lifelong learning. We offer a full spectrum of sports camps for the athlete in the family, as well as fun and exciting courses available through our enrichment center. Give your child a jump start in kindergarten, have fun learning about marine life or complete high school chemistry in six weeks through the center for academic advancement. Curious about how to develop a video game? Want to see if you have what it takes to command a stage? Join us for hands-on experiences in the center for experiential learning. Our team of instructors has been carefully selected, and most programs are taught by Norfolk Collegiate’s own faculty and staff members. We are proud to offer the Hampton Roads community such dynamic programs taught by experienced teachers. We hope you will take advantage of these fantastic opportunities and join the Norfolk Collegiate family for a memorable Summer under the Oak!

Completed applications and fees are due ONE WEEK PRIOR to the start of each session. REQUIRED FORMS AND IDENTIFICATION In accordance with the Virginia State Law and the Virginia Department of Social Services, Norfolk Collegiate School requires the following information from each registered participant:
• A copy of the student’s Virginia Health Form. (You can obtain a copy from your school. Current Norfolk Collegiate students will already have one on file). • Identification verification through a copy of the participant’s birth certificate, passport, child military ID OR proof of enrollment at a Virginia school (example: copy of a report card). CONFIRMATIONS Your child will not be confirmed in a camp until payment and all of the following documents have been received by the summer programs office: application, Virginia Health Form and identification verification document. Once received, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to each participant, which will include general camp guidelines and any additional information related to their specific camp. REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS Refunds must be requested in writing two weeks prior to the start of the requested camp. Twenty percent of the total fee is non-refundable. No refund will be given if a camper is dismissed due to disciplinary action. Norfolk Collegiate Summer Programs reserve the right to cancel any camp due to low enrollment. Fees for cancelled camps will be refunded or may be applied to another camp. PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF PROCEDURES We ask that all campers be escorted by a guardian to their assigned camp room or meeting place. There will be guides available to direct you to your camper’s location on the first day. Pick-up will also take place in the child’s assigned location. Camp doors will open for drop-off five minutes prior to the start of camp.
Any participants who need to arrive earlier will be signed into The Grove. A late fee will be charged for students not picked up on time. THE GROVE (NORFOLK COLLEGIATE’S EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM) The Grove is designed to be your child’s home away from home during their time at Norfolk Collegiate. This is a place for your child to get pumped up in the morning for the day’s activities and to wind down after a full day of fun and excitement. Participants will be greeted by the same group of loving Grove staff on a daily basis. Each camper will be escorted by staff members to their designated camp five minutes before it begins. The Grove also has a separate pre-teen room, so every child will find their niche. Between music and socializing, and games and crafts, the options are endless in The Grove. The hours of The Grove are 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m., and the fee is $55 per week. This fee will not be prorated. A late fee will be charged for students not picked up by 6 p.m. FIELD TRIPS Some camps include field trips in the local area. Transportation for these trips is provided by school buses with certified drivers. Norfolk Collegiate School Summer Program teachers accompany campers on all field trips. Your registration form includes blanket field trip permission; however, you will be notified of specific field trips before they occur. EMERGENCY/MEDICAL INFORMATION Please provide detailed information for your child in the medical and emergency contact section of the application. In order for your child to attend camp, we must have a copy on file of their Virginia Health Form, which includes an immunization record and recent physical. If medication must be given to your child during camp hours (including epi-pens and medication related to asthma), a separate form for medication administration and authorization must be completed by the parent/guardian and child’s physician. Please contact the Summer Program’s Office for this form. All medication must be dropped off in the Summer Program’s Office by the parent/guardian.
LUNCH AND SNACK For full-day camps, lunch is a part of the daily routine and is INCLUDED IN THE COST PER CAMP. Students may bring their own snacks for the morning and afternoon snack time, or they may purchase snacks at our camp store. The camp store will be open in the morning and afternoon. T-SHIRTS Each participant will receive one camp T-shirt with his/her paid registration. Please be sure to include the participant’s shirt size on the application. CLOTHING AND PERSONAL ITEMS All clothing, equipment, electronic devices and other personal items should be labeled with your child’s name. Norfolk Collegiate will not be responsible for any lost items. STAFF Staff members have been carefully selected to ensure that all students have a safe and enriching summer experience. Each program has been created by a qualified coordinator who will lead the day-to-day activities. Additional assistance may be provided by camp counselors and junior counselors.

HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY Want to get your high school chemistry done in six weeks? Now is your chance, if you’re looking to free up some space in next semester’s schedule or just get ahead. This is a full year condensed, complete with labs, projects and a final exam. Upon completion of the course, Norfolk Collegiate will issue one (1) academic credit. Coordinator: Dina Eschbach is a current Virginia Beach Public School teacher with 15 years experience teaching high school chemistry. She is a participant in LENS, a collaborative effort between Old Dominion University, William & Mary and Virginia Beach City Public Schools to enhance student comprehension of sciences. MIDDLE SCHOOL JOURNALISM Join Upper School Journalism teacher and English Department Chair Judy Davis for a chance at “real” journalism. Learn about layout, headlines and everything else that goes into putting a newspaper together. The Upper School’s Oak Leaf is an award-winning publication, and this is an opportunity to get involved early! Coordinator: Judy Davis, CJE, is Norfolk Collegiate School’s English department chair and a certified journalism educator. She has a B.A. in English and political science from Hood College; an M.A. in English with a concentration in linguistics from Old Dominion University; and is a Ph.D. candidate in rhetoric and composition at The Catholic University of America. JUMP-START KINDERGARTEN This camp is for rising kindergarten students who want to familiarize themselves with a full day school experience. Students will work on reading readiness skills through daily hands-on activities, use manipulatives to explore math concepts, use iPads during centers, learn about zoo animals, make creative animal crafts and visit the Virginia Zoo. Your camper will be well prepared for the first day of school.

JUMP-START FIRST GRADE Jump-Start First Grade is a fresh start to a successful year! Students will practice reading, writing and math skills through a variety of fun, handson learning activities that will help them ease into a new year. Your child will build confidence in a challenging yet fun and caring environment. Coordinator: Catherine Todd Thomson, Norfolk Collegiate first-grade teacher and alumna, is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. literacy leadership program at Old Dominion University. She has a master’s degree in reading from University of Virginia and B.S. in psychology from James Madison University with certification in early childhood education. JUMP-START SECOND GRADE Want to enhance your young scholar’s skills and confidence? Look no further! Under the guidance of a veteran teacher, your rising second grader will: hone in on phonics and word-attack skills; increase reading independence, comprehension and fluency; sharpen math skills in addition, subtraction and word problems; expand Spanish vocabulary; become more proficient in using iMacs and iPads; experience learning outside the classroom on several local field trips…and more. At camp’s end, your child will be poised for greater success in second grade. Coordinator: Lolita Teresa Kraft is a Norfolk Collegiate faculty member with a master’s degree in elementary education and B.S. in elementary education with a minor in health and special education from Old Dominion University. She is a member of the Virginia Reading Association and has attended the Virginia Gifted Association conference the past three years.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY SKILLS Topics will include middle school expectations and study skills, like the following: time management, organization, note taking, test-taking strategies, how to effectively read textbooks, improved reading comprehension in novel study, memory techniques and a math skill refresher. Coordinator: Laura Boettcher is experienced in teaching study skills and has been with Norfolk Collegiate since 2010. HANDS-ON MATH Mrs. Curtis shows students how math is involved in our daily lives by creating fun, hands-on experiences. Participants will take a field trip to the zoo and gather statistics on the animals, research animals that are going extinct, graph the results and give presentations. They also will turn a blueprint of a house into the actual model on the athletic field. Students will learn about the
connection between percents, profits and running a lemonade stand (and will actually make a cardboard lemonade stand to take home). Fractions will come alive through with fun cooking activities. Be a part of this creative camp and see why math is so important! Coordinator: Anne Curtis has been a Norfolk Collegiate faculty member for 37 years. She has a B.A. from the College of William and Mary and a master’s degree from Old Dominion University. MARINE SCIENCE MARVELS Students will explore all types of marine life and what it means to be a marine biologist! From the tadpoles growing in the Norfolk Collegiate pond to the oysters in the Lafayette River, students will learn about the ecosystems in the waters that they see every day and how their life can affect these special habitats. This camp will culminate with a trip to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. OOEY GOOEY SCIENCE Let’s get messy with science! Roll up your sleeves and get ready to use some familiar kitchen substances to investigate the mystery of chemistry. The kitchen is full of substances that are just waiting to foam, ooze and erupt! How about making a goop that bounces, snaps and crackles? These experiments are designed to touch,
taste, see and smell - the coolest science ever! Coordinator: Kirby Velasco Lefkowitz is a Norfolk Collegiate alumnus and a second-grade teacher with Virginia Beach Public Schools. She earned a B.S. in psychology and a M.Ed. in elementary education with a concentration in K-6 curriculum and an endorsement in special education from George Mason University. READER’S THEATER, SESSION I FOR GRADES 2 AND 3 Come and explore the world of literature in a new and engaging way! This approach, credited with enhancing confidence in performance and in building reading fluency, uses stories that have been adapted into scripts that do not require the memorization of lines. During our time together, we will create spontaneous performances that bring to life stories by using our voices, facial expressions and gestures. In addition, we will create costumes and simple props. Coordinator: Kathy Cobb is an experienced elementary school teacher with a B.A. in Communication Studies from Virginia Wesleyan College and a M.A. in Gifted Education from Norfolk State University. READER’S THEATER, SESSION II FOR GRADES 4 AND 5 During this fun session of bringing literature to life, we will be focusing on all things William Shakespeare as we learn some fascinating information about the man himself and the Globe Theater. After an introduction to The Reader’s Theater process, we will work with scripts and perform short plays taken from Shakespeare’s works that we have staged and designed ourselves. Coordinator: Kathy Cobb is an experienced elementary school teacher with a B.A. in Communication Studies from Virginia Wesleyan College and a M.A. in Gifted Education from Norfolk State University. SUMMER READING KNOCK-OUT FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Knock out your summer reading requirement under the guidance of a Norfolk Collegiate employee. Read and discuss your required summer reading and work on your school’s assigned reading project. We will learn comprehension strategies, participate in fun language arts activities and engage in group discussion. Coordinator: Ashley Adamek is currently a substitute teacher at Norfolk Collegiate with five years of teaching experience. She received her B.A. degree in Communication from Florida Atlantic University. Ashley also currently holds a Certificate in Human Resources from Florida Atlantic University and a Certificate in Paralegal Studies from Duke University. In the past, Ashley has taught undergraduate-level public speaking and communication courses, high school English and honors English courses, and she redesigned and led the new-hire training sessions for a major supermarket chain. Ashley also acts as a freelance writer who has experience writing short fiction, public relations materials and press releases, technological translations for consumer websites, standard newspaper articles, and editorials. SUMMER READING KNOCK-OUT FOR GRADES 6-9 Come read and discuss your required summer reading and work on summer reading projects. We will learn and practice comprehension strategies, participate in helpful language arts activities, and engage in group discussion. Our goal will be to complete one summer reading book over the course of the week. Be sure to bring your novel each day. Coordinator: Meg Dalrymple is a Norfolk Collegiate English faculty member with six years of experience in middle school and upper school English/language arts teaching and has a B.A. from Virginia Tech. WRITING THE COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY Don’t wait until fall to write the essays required by most colleges and universities. YOGA POPS SUMMER CAMP In this fun-filled camp, yogis will learn and practice the physical postures of yoga while listening to their favorite pop music. Yoga Freeze Dance, Musical Mats and other fun yoga games will be used to reinforce proper understanding and alignment of the poses. Choreographing yoga story routines and interacting with partner postures are other
creative ways our yogis will be physically fit in a noncompetitive environment. Students will also have a chance to practice “good-kids-karma” yoga by spending time on a chosen community service project. Cool crafts such as mala bead bracelets, herbal eye pillows and Young Yogis Yoga chillax spray will be made for yogis to create their own Zen space at home! Be sure to pack a filled water bottle along with a nourishing snack for outdoor free time as well! CHESS This camp is designed for beginners as well as those looking to further improve upon their skills as a chess player. The goal of this camp is to develop students to think clearly and logically about solving problems they face on the chess board. Each player will receive a chess set and certificate upon completion. HARRY POTTER DOWN TO A SCIENCE During this weeklong Harry Potter camp, students will explore the wonderful world of Harry Potter. The week will begin with a formal sorting into houses and shopping in Diagon Alley for the supplies they will use throughout the week. Students will compete throughout the week to earn points for their house. Students will also attend Hogwarts classes such as Divination, Potions, Charms, Herbology and Transfiguration. Throughout these classes, students will learn a combination of magical and muggle lessons required for every Harry Potter fan! MAKE & TAKE IT GAMES What better way is there to learn and to keep skills fresh than by having FUN?! That’s what Make & Take It Games is all about! POTTERY - PLAYFUL POTTERY Exploring the possibilities in clay! Campers will work mainly with hand building and will experiment with textures and other surface applications. We will also introduce the potter’s wheel and campers will learn beginning techniques. All pieces will be fired and glazed. (Some pieces will need to be picked up after camp has ended.) PAINT AND PLANT For the lover of art and nature alike, this camp will merge the two together. Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this week of camp, learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red hot robots. Experiment with sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can even play soccer! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you! Identify and collect evidence, from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Recreate the scene of a crime using clues and detailed observations. Become a super sleuth and learn clever ways of performing tasks in the hands-on view of the science that spies use. From decoding messages to metal detectors and night vision, campers will have the opportunity to check out spy equipment and discover the technological tools of detection. Every day campers will bring home fun projects including the fingerprint finder, secret code breaker and spyglasses! Sousa marches, fiddle tunes, great American classical music, and American-themed songs. Join in the celebration of American music, including crafts, musical games and storytelling as we spend the week learning and enjoying our nation’s music. Fiddling demonstration by instructor Joanna Binford with ample opportunity for campers to bring their own instruments and share songs. Activities are age appropriate and designed to teach children to enjoy music in many
different ways. This is a very “hands-on” camp where children will do wonderful activities each day! Coordinator: Joanna Binford, Norfolk Collegiate’s strings instructor, holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from the University of Kentucky. She previously taught at Transylvania University, The Centenary School of Music and the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts. An award-winning teacher, Binford was named the outstanding educator in her district, among other awards. Some of her achievements include studying with violist Paul Neubauer of The Juilliard School, as well as teaching at various Suzuki institutes and workshops and the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra. Outside of school, Binford plays in the Endless Road Strings, a quartet that specializes in alternativestyle string arrangements.
THAT ROCKS! This weeklong camp is jam-packed with geological experiments and investigations. There will be fossil digs, treasure hunts and even time for students to build their own volcano! They will learn how rocks are formed and how rocks and fossils tell an important story in the history of our world. So strap on your boots and get ready to get dirty. Coordinator: Kirby Velasco Lefkowitz is a Norfolk Collegiate alumnus and a second grade teacher with Virginia Beach Public Schools. UNDER THE SEA During this camp we will explore what goes on under the sea. We will learn about the creatures of the ocean and we will make our own crabs, turtles, snow globes and so much more. Your child will bring home lots of crafts this week. We will even take a trip to the Virginia Aquarium. UPCYCLING ARTS AND CRAFTS One person’s trash is another’s treasure! Enjoy a week of art and craft projects using recycled materials. Campers will create fine art, wall art, wearable art and jewelry. We will investigate how visual images can add to the study of human societies. We’ll spend a little time learning the basics – what anthropology is, some examples of important documentary work, the technical side (some basic apps for movie making) – and throw around some ideas for inspiration. Then we’ll be off to the races – a few short field trips “on location,” some genuine production work, and a red carpet screening on our final day. Students are encouraged to bring their own iPads. If a personal iPad is not available, one may be borrowed while participants are on campus. Coordinator: Paige Solomon is chair of the social studies department at Norfolk Collegiate. She has 16 years of teaching experience, a B.A. in anthropology from University of Florida, Virginia licensure in social studies for grades 6-12 and is completing her M.A. in history at Old Dominion University. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN! Just what a girl wants: crafts, spa day, jewelry, fashion and even a special lunch. This camp is all about doing those “girlish” things while reinforcing how powerful girls can be. We will even brush up on our etiquette and manners as we prepare for our lunch date! Coordinator: Ashley Adamek is currently a substitute teacher at Norfolk Collegiate with five years of teaching experience. She received her bachelor of arts in communication from Florida Atlantic University. Ashley holds a Certificate in Human Resources from Florida Atlantic University and a Certificate in Paralegal Studies from Duke University. She also has taught undergraduate-level public speaking and communication courses, high school English and honors English courses, and she redesigned and led the new hire training sessions for a major supermarket chain. Ashley also acts as a freelance writer who has experience writing short fiction, public relations materials and press releases, technological translations for consumer websites, standard newspaper articles and editorials. NORFOLK COLLEGIATE PRESENTS THE HURRAH PLAYERS SUMMER THEATER CAMP This is an opportunity for young people to learn all about theatre with hands on activities and workshop style instruction. Previous experience is NOT required...a desire to have FUN is! In the mornings, campers will participate in classes in musical theatre, acting, Broadway dance, jazz, tap and vocal training. In the afternoons, campers will be able to experience the three P’s of theatre… Producing, Promoting and Performing! Campers will learn about sets, props, costumes and make-up as well as market and perform their own one-act play! The final day of camp is performance day! Following a lunchtime pizza party, campers will showcase all their hard work and talents for their families and friends. Each camper will receive a Hurrah Players Camp T-shirt, FREE ticket to a Hurrah production: The Magic and Music of Michael (July 25-27) or Disney’s The Jungle Book (August 22-24), certificate of achievement and field trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Friday, June 20 (9 a.m. – approx. 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21). NOTE: For those not attending the field trip, there is no camp that day. Campers 11 and up are automatically included in this field trip. Campers age 10 and younger have the option to participate in this field trip with an adult parent/guardian for $100 additional. The field trip includes a full day of activity in the Outer Banks and performance ticket to the outdoor drama The Lost Colony. GONE FISHIN’ Create your own fish story! You will travel to area fishing “holes” and hopefully reel in the big one! You will learn how to bait a hook, cast and fish with a bobber. Campers will visit a different fishing location everyday to test the waters with their fishing skills. Campers will need their own fishing pole and small tackle box along with lunch, a bathing suit and sunscreen. Coordinator: Angler Bill Pidgeon has been fishing since he was about six years old. His biggest fish so far is a 434-pound Dusky Shark. Pidgeon and his son, Jonathan, began offering this camp about seven years ago with only four students. It has grown each year, and many students have participated more than one time! Pidgeon and his family, including his brother and daughters, have taught more than 100 students through this camp over the years. Fishing is a great way to relax, spend time with friends and family, and often have a great meal that night from your catch. We will take daily walking field trips through Lakewood Park to identify tree species, investigate the marsh ecosystem and explore the neighboring habitats of Norfolk Collegiate. Coordinator: Betty Baucom is an experienced educator and member of the Norfolk Tree Commission. She has a master’s of science in early childhood education from Old Dominion University and is a licensed math specialist.
SESSION: July 28-August 1 TIME: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. GRADE LEVEL: Rising 3-6 LOCATION: Norfolk Collegiate Lower School COST: $270 STEVE ARCHER PRESENTS “COLLEGIATE ROCKS!” Are you ready to see if you have what it takes to be a star? This exciting new camp offers the opportunity to find the performer inside of you and the chance to be in a real band! Campers will get to try their skills and receive instruction in such areas as guitar, keyboards, bass, drums and vocals. Students are encouraged to bring any instruments they already own plus any CD’s, iPods or downloaded music. We will have many instruments on hand for those that do not have their own. Previous musical experience is highly recommended for those interested in playing an instrument. Vocalists need no previous experience, just a great attitude and a willingness to do what it takes to be part of a great band. Campers will be instructed in songwriting and arranging, ensemble playing and showmanship by one of the most popular and experienced music performance instructors and staff in Hampton Roads. Each session will end with an exciting concert for family, friends and fellow campers and is open to the public. An optional recreation period will be a part of this camp and a field trip is also included. Don’t miss this golden opportunity to be a part of something awesome and incredibly FUN this summer! notable venues as The Norva Theater, The Hampton Coliseum, The Scope Arena and The Virginia Beach Amphitheater and has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in Rock such as The Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and Peter Frampton among others. He has been instrumental in developing the musical careers of many young artists in the area and brings a wealth of expertise and experience along with great energy and passion in working with young people over the years. Unity is the most popular tool for professional, independent game developers. Using the free version of this software, which you may also download and use at home, bring your ideas to (virtual) life! Under the supervision of Jeremy Alessi, independent developer and gaming entrepreneur, participants will spend the week exploring the processes, tasks, and roles involved in game and app design while building their own projects. Coordinator: Jeremy Alessi has been developing games for nearly 20 years. He has delivered projects for publishers, as an indie, and for large multientity training scenarios in the serious space. With the Center for Lifelong Learning, adults are invited to dedicate some time to physical fitness while their kids are at camp. Teens can experience the joy of volunteering, hopefully starting a lifelong tradition. Teachers can come and earn professional development points by attending the Educator Institute.
COMMUNITY SERVICE CAMP This camp is designed to give each student an opportunity to earn volunteer hours whether it is for school or just for the enjoyment of helping others. Under the leadership of Anne Curtis and Cathy White, the students will volunteer their time with a different organization each day. Not only are Anne and Cathy faculty members at Norfolk Collegiate School but they are sisters, too. Please join them in making a difference in our community. Coordinators: Anne Curtis has been a Norfolk Collegiate faculty member for 37 years. She has a B.A. from the College of William and Mary and a master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She started both the varsity soccer and field hockey programs at Norfolk Collegiate and is currently the Middle School field hockey coach. Cathy White, Norfolk Collegiate faculty member and alumna, is an experienced elementary school teacher with a concentration in kindergarten education for the last seven years. She has a B.S. in early childhood education from James Madison University. Norfolk Collegiate School Educator Institute This annual, uniquely innovative program departs from popular approaches to professional development that traditionally focus on pedagogical technique, curriculum development and child development theory. Instead, experiential and highly interactive discussion and activities will take a holistic approach that focus on the educator as an individual to enhance personal self-awareness, quality of life and job satisfaction.
All levels of professional educators (teachers, school counselors, paraprofessionals and administrators) from all backgrounds and pre-service educators can benefit from The Heart and Soul of Education Program. Participants will be eligible to receive up to 15 professional development points. Director: Jan Weintraub, Norfolk Collegiate faculty member and Lower School guidance counselor, earned her M.Ed. in school counseling and a B.S. in women’s studies with a minor in human services counseling from Old Dominion University. She has 13 years of experience as a school counselor in a variety of private and public settings and levels.
