behind our graduates when they meet their first class.

Northeast Nebraska Teaching Academy (NENTA)

Graphic Design

Wayne State’s Graphic Design program succeeds because our graduates land good jobs doing the work they love. You really don’t need a better reason to consider our program. And they get results: Recent graduates are working as graphic designers, marketing professionals, screen printers, typesetters (digital type), freelancers, and in-house designers.

Business Administration

You have a head for numbers and a heart for business. Maybe you’re driven to maximize employee performance within an organization or to hire the right people to the right position. Perhaps your fire comes from influencing customer perceptions, delivering product benefits, and building brand attitudes and loyalty through marketing. You could be looking to grow in the field of agricultural business ventures. Maybe you have a thirst for travel and international business. And most of all, you want to know your degree means that you can get a job after graduation. Whatever your interests are in the business world, Wayne State has you covered with business administration degrees in accounting, economics, agri-business, finance, human resource management, international business, management, marketing, office administration, professional studies, and public accounting to provide the solid foundation you need.

Industrial Technology/Education

The importance of technology education grows every day and the demand for professionals to teach industrial technology is high. Wayne State’s industrial technology teacher education program prepares students to enter a teaching career at the junior/senior high school level or to teach in postsecondary industrial technology education programs. As one of only two industrial technology education programs in the state, Wayne State’s comprehensive combination of lectures, discussions, demonstrations and laboratory activities provides students with the experiences necessary for the development of a theoretical and practical understanding of industry and technology. The program includes work in communication systems, manufacturing systems, construction systems, and power, energy and transportation systems. Industrial Technology/Manufacturing A healthy industrial economy requires qualified safety managers, construction managers, drafters, planners, and designers, and manufacturing managers. Wayne State can help build your future in industry with rigorous programs designed to give you the background you need, whether you are interested in workplace safety and productivity, supervising civil, commercial or residential construction, managing the production of documents and drawings that communicate design needs and specifications, or managing resources, processes, and procedures in a manufacturing environment. Our programs provide hands-on opportunities to develop the skills required to flourish as a manager on robotic assembly lines, safety and surveying crews, sustainability teams, production lines, or government regulatory agencies.

Be Prepared for FAFSA Changes EducationQuest Foundation wants students and parents to be aware of changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – the application for federal, state and college-based financial aid. Students going to college during the 2017-18 academic year can complete and submit the FAFSA beginning October 1, 2016 using 2015 income tax data. This is a change from previous years when students had to wait until after January 1 and use tax data from the previous year. Before starting the FAFSA, students should create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) at fsaid.ed.gov. If the student is dependent, a parent must also create an FSA ID. The IDs are needed to access the FAFSA and other Federal Student Aid websites, and serve as the signature for the FAFSA. Students and parents should complete the FAFSA beginning on or after October 1 but before the college’s FAFSA priority date. Contact the college(s) to learn their priority dates. Colleges will use the results of the FAFSA to determine how much they will award in financial aid. This could be a combination of scholarships, grants, work-study and student loans. For free help, see FAFSA Tools at EducationQuest.org or call EducationQuest’s Omaha office at 888-357-6300.

NORFOLK DAILY NEWS, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2016

Hard work not an obstacle for nursing student’s passion It’s not so easy deciding what career to pursue when you’re in high school. Carter Cuba grew up in Silver Creek, Neb., a town of 445, just 20 miles west of Columbus. The 21-years-old always thought she would choose a career in agriculture or nursing. She listened to her mom talk about her job and from time-to-time, she visited the hospital. When her sister tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) three times playing sports, she felt drawn by health science and caring for someone. “I saw her go through that and helped her with daily activities,” Cuba said. “I saw the pain she went through. I always wanted to do something to help people, to be caring, and to feel good about myself every day,” she said. She made a decision in her senior year of high school. In between her junior and senior year in high school, she became a certified nursing assistant and worked as a CNA. She loved it. In her senior year, she took another step towards being a nurse and applied for the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) at Wayne State College. Wayne State, Chadron State College and Peru State College participate in the program and accept qualified applicants from rural areas who have a desire to practice health care in rural area of the state. Students who maintaining good standing receive a tuition waiver and guaranteed admission to a University of Nebraska Medical Center program in their area of study. As Cuba was writing an essay for the RHOP application, she realized how passionate she felt about nursing. She ultimately was accepted into the program at Wayne State, took too years of pre-requisites and then applied to and was accepted at the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk. Cuba began classes last August 2015. Though she could apply to attend at five different UNMC nursing divisions – Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Scottsbluff or Norfolk, she chose to attend in Norfolk. “I always had my eyes set on Norfolk. It’s close to home for me,” Cuba said. “I like living and working in a rural area. And I knew the clinical sites UNMC has are built within community health care settings. “I envision myself as a rural nurse and so it’s an advantage for me to go there.” Students who want to earn a traditional bachelor’s degree in nursing can complete the degree in four years. Students take two years of prerequisite coursework at a college or university then typically apply to UNMC’s BSN program where they would take two years of nursing coursework. She remembers her first day of class. “It was so exciting. It was awesome sitting there thinking ‘I’m going to be a nurse. It was an experience I cannot describe.” Cuba said though her first semester at UNMC was intense, she learned to adapt. “It was hard work and a little intense the first few weeks then I understood and got into a schedule and learned what I needed to do.” The demands left no time at first to do the things she loves: play softball, fourwheeling and hanging out with family.

Peru State College

Cuba doesn’t know exactly what nursing specialty she will choose or where she wants to work yet. “I’m waiting to see if something pops out at me. Maybe emergency room or intensive care unit. You never know where life takes you.” The smaller class size, supportive professors and fellow students are a good fit for Cuba. “I knew I’d get more experience and get to know my professors and classmates. We did a lot of group work. I can go to my professor and talk to them about nursing or anything personal. I have a lot of trust in them and I know they’re looking out for me. “I really enjoy the program. It’s challenging but great if you’re doing what you love.” Liane Connelly, Ph.D., assistant dean of the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division said it’s evident the Cuba has a passion for nursing. “Carter is an outstanding student who has successfully achieved her goal to enroll in and persist in a challenging BSN program. Carter has a passion for nursing, which is evident through her engagement in the learning process and her desire to learn the most she can in her academic studies so that she can help others in need.”

Nestled in the historic hills of the Missouri River, the “Campus of a Thousand Oaks” is Nebraska’s oldest college and will celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary in 2017. Peru State College’s constant commitment to academic excellence has resulted in a unique and innovative mix of online, traditional, undergraduate and graduate programs. Similarly, the college’s ongoing student engagement promotes inquiry, discovery and innovation oncampus and across the region. Peru State College is committed to being a good steward of education, students, the region and Nebraska for another 150 years. Peru State highlights:

• Affordable, high-quality academics for in-state prices, even for {{State}} students: ~$20K less per year than other regional schools of comparable quality • Ranked by US News & World Report as one of the best educational values in the country • 47 innovative, relevant and personalized courses of study with full career guidance • Class-Free Fridays—most classes are held Monday through Thursday • A short trip from several Midwest cities • A vibrant campus community with tons of on-campus programming fit for every interest • NAIA II Sports teams with Bobcat spirit • A nationally renowned campus known for our Thousand Oaks arboretum

How to earn a college scholarship

Scholarships are available for those who are willing to put in the time to research their options.

The cost of a college education continues to rise. The College Board says the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. In 2013 and 2014, the average cost of a year’s tuition at a Canadian university was $5,772. The high cost of education compels many students to find ways to finance their education. For many, that means exploring available scholarships. Scholarships come in different forms and are usually offered to students as a gift to be put toward college or university costs. Some schools offer scholarships, while other scholarships are sponsored by outside organizations. Students who meet certain requirements may be eligible for scholarships. While academic or athletic skills are the first criteria associated with scholarships, they are not the only avenues by which students can pursue scholarships. Scholarships may be offered to students of certain ethnic groups; children of employees at particular companies; or to students who live in particular states. Local branches of organizations like the Rotary Club or Kiwanis also may give out scholarships. To improve one’s odds of getting a scholarship, consider the

9-A

following tips. • Get involved with the community. Many scholarship sponsors seek individuals who are committed to volunteerism. Plus, volunteering for various groups puts students in the path of information about scholarships from these organizations. • Use scholarship search engines. Those who search for scholarship sponsors should find plenty of results if they peruse scholarship search engines such as Scholarships.com, CollegeBoard.com and FastWeb.com. • Use networking contacts. Students should ask anyone they know if they are aware of any scholarship opportunities. Students who develop a rapport with guidance counselors or the financial aid department at their prospective colleges or universities may learn about scholarship opportunities that are not highly publicized. These people may have the inside track on scholarship information. • Apply for all available scholarships. Now is not the time for students to become lazy. Students should apply for as any scholarships for which they meet the eligibility requirements. Scholarships can help students offset the rising costs of a college education. Those who are willing to put in the research, time and effort to apply may find a wealth of scholarship opportunities at their disposal.
