Dear Readers: The backbone of any community is the Family Business. We express a heartfelt thank you to the businesses featured in our “Family Ties” edition. It is true in Northeast Nebraska, just as in other areas, that the businesses best known for quality and customer service are family owned. Family businesses offer longevity, continuity and a knowledge of the local community that is hard to match. They are each unique in their own way with a founding story that holds the secrets behind the energy, passion and personality driving the enterprise. We salute and celebrate the businesses featured in this special edition and hope you enjoy reading about your community’s “family ties” as much as we enjoyed putting it together. If you haven’t had an opportunity to get acquainted with one of these businesses we encourage you to do so. Norfolk Daily News 80609

Here’s what Larry and Diane Hradec want Norfolkans and Northeast Nebraskans to know about Hradec Diesel and D&L Towing, the family businesses they operate:

“Our company is based on honesty, excellence and our employees’ technical expertise to exceed our customers’ expectations.” The Hradecs started the business in 1990. It is located at 1310 S. Elkhorn St., in Norfolk. Larry Hradec serves as president and Jean Spale is now a second-generation family member to be involved in the operation. Larry and Diane Hradec started the business as a one-person shop, but over the years, with several additions to the building, and the purchase of more land. “The hard work and dedication of our employees, we have grown to be a very successful truck repair facility,” Larry Hradec said.

Six years ago, D&L Towing was added, offering car and truck towing. Hradec Diesel is an authorized Mack and Volvo parts and service repair facility. “We also service all makes and models of trucks, and offer towing,” Larry Hradec said.

Authier Miller Pape Eyecare began in 1967 when Dr. Rick Authier and his wife, Sandy, opened their first office in downtown Norfolk. After 27 years of practicing alone, Dr. Authier decided it was time to add a partner, so in 1994 Dr. Steve Miller joined the practice followed by Dr. Jeff Pape in 1997. They formed the base of what is known today as Authier Miller Pape Eyecare Consultants. Feeling they had outgrown the building on South Fifth Street, the doctors built their current facility on West Norfolk Avenue. In 2006, after 43 years of practice, Dr. Authier retired and Drs. Courtney Goetsch and Jennifer Furstenau were added to the group. In 2009, Dr. Goetsch joined Drs. Miller and Pape as a full partner. Dr. Miller and his wife, Janell, are parents of four children. They are active in church, school and community activities. He is currently president of the Nebraska Optometric Association and vice president of pastoral council at Sacred Heart Parish. Dr. Pape and his wife, Stephanie, have two sons. When not coaching youth athletics, Dr. Pape serves on the board of directors for Faith Regional Health Services and also is on the Nebraska Board of Optometry. Stephanie has spent most of the last 10 years teaching at Lutheran High Northeast. Dr. Goetsch was recently married to Lonnie Grothe. She is a past president of the Northeast Society of the Nebraska Optometric Association and is active in her church and Bible study, Kiwanis, serves on the board of directors at the Norfolk Family YMCA and is an active member of the Infant See and See to Learn programs of the optometric association. Lonnie has worked at Vulcraft for over 14 years. Dr. Furstenau and her husband, Cory, farm near Tilden and have two sons. She serves both our Pierce and Randolph satellite offices and also works part time in the Norfolk office and is active with See to Learn. We pride ourselves on our extensive frame selection and the use of only the highest quality lens brands and materials. Our staff receives continual training as new lens technology is developed. We value and appreciate all of our long term patients and feel blessed to be taking care of second, third and fourth generations. We invite new/prospective patients to stop in and look around as we enjoy forming new friendships. As the holidays approach we wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season enjoyed with your loved ones.

From left: Rosemary and Allen Schwartz, and Tammy Schweers It was in 1992 when Tammy Schweers established Tammy’s Design Interiors in downtown Norfolk, after previously serving for five years as the interior designer with Ballantyne Furniture. Amid a subsequent change in location and growth of the business, Tammy’s Design Interiors continues to offer exceptional value, competitive pricing, superlative service and professional installation. Tammy’s Design moved out of the downtown area in 2004 and to the present location at 3206 Raasch Dr., Suite 200 (next to Flooring Solutions on the western edge of Norfolk) in the fall of 2006. The company involves four family members. Tammy Schweers is the owner, interior designer and works in sales. She has more than 23 years of experience in the window covering and design industry. Her father, Allen Schwartz. works in sales and is a certified professional installer. Tammy’s mother, Rosemary Schwartz, also works in sales and with showroom design. Tammy’s husband, Jason, focuses on accounts payable and receivable. “It is very rewarding to work with family members, as we all have a vested interest. We’re all very responsible and dedicated,” Tammy Schweers said. The interior design studio specializes in window covering treatments featuring the “Hunter Douglas Gallery” that offers blinds, shades, shutters, soft treatments, draperies, bedspreads and upholstery. Residential and commercial consultations are available, along with home accessories and wall art. “We are proud to offer customers optimum solutions for their window covering and design needs and the exceptional retail experience they deserve,” Tammy Schweers said. “As a family business, we share one common goal — offer exceptional quality products and service to Norfolk and the surrounding area, making sure our customer knows they come first as our number one priority.” In September, Tammy’s Design Interiors upgraded to become a full-line Hunter Douglas Gallery. The Hunter Douglas Gallery is an exclusive retail display environment that captures the energy and elegance of the entire Hunter Douglas line in a colorful, user-friendly format. These dealers have taken the next step to bringing their businesses to a higher level. As a Gallery dealer, Tammy’s Design Interiors continually takes advantage of a wide variety of support programs that help not only streamline business to provide increased customer service, but also keep the store current on new window covering products and consumer trends. “Even though our focus is on window coverings, we still offer many exceptional gift and accent items for homes, including wall art, mirrors, clocks, candles, jewelry and many more items to make a home complete,” she said.

Over 37 years of existence, Jerry’s Standard, Inc., has experienced a lot of changes. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the emphasis on “quality service and a quality product at a fair price to our customers.”

1224 Michigan Ave. • 402-644-4333

It was November 1974 when Jerry and Judy Blackman established Jerry’s Standard. The full-service gas station with complete auto repair has been a constant since then. “Over the years, we went through a lot of changes. Not only did we have brand changes from Standard Oil to Amoco Oil to BP and now to Sinclair Oil (which we believe might be the best change of all), in the early 1980s, we added an automatic car wash and a convenience store,” said Curt and Wade Blackman, who took over ownership of the business from their parents. In the late 1980s, the station, which is located at 1029 S. 13th St., was remodeled and expanded to three service bays. The biggest, most recent change is the establishment of the new Jerry’s Service Center at 1224 Michigan Ave., which has 10 bays and five technicians staffing it. “This facility has been a great addition to our business,” the Blackmans said. Wade Blackman manages the service station, while Curt Blackman manages the service center and Tyler Blackman is a service technician. “We would like to thank all of our customers who supported us for the last 37 years and pray that we can continue to serve you in the future,” the Blackmans said.

The Huse name has been synonymous with newspapers since

1871, when William Huse moved his family and a hand press from Wisconsin to Ponca. There, William published the first newspaper in northern Nebraska. In 1888, Huse and his son, W.N., bought the Elkhorn Valley News, a weekly paper located in Norfolk, and the Norfolk Daily News, which had been converted from a weekly to a daily paper the year before. William Huse continued to operate the paper in Ponca, while W.N. moved to Norfolk to run William Huse that operation. For a while, the weekly Elkhorn Valley News was W.N. Huse published in addition to the daily paper. It was later consolidated with the Weekly Journal, which was last published in 1911. The family operated out of the front room of an old laundry building on South Fourth Street. There, 12 employees gathered the news, wrote the stories, set the type and printed the paper that went out to around 400 subscribers. In 1892, the partnership between father and son was dissolved, and W.N. became owner of the News. His father continued to operate the paper in Ponca. Despite the fact that Nebraska was experiencing an economic depression, W.N. bought a lot on North Fourth Street and constructed a new building in 1894. Through the years, the building was expanded to accommodate the equipment needed to acquire and Gene Huse disseminate news quickly and efficiently. Jerry Huse Some of those improvements included a telegraph and a full news wire, the only one in the nation maintained by a newspaper in a city Norfolk’s size. He also installed the first typesetting and linotype machines found in this part of the country. Other improvements included a press capable of printing 6,000 eight-page papers an hour. William Huse died in 1913, leaving the operation of the company to his sons, Gene and Norris. However, William’s wife, Mary, remained active in the business, serving as president for a few years. Prior to their father’s death, Gene and Norris learned the business by working in each of the paper’s departments. Gene eventually settled on the manufacturing and mechanical side, while Norris managed the editorial side. Norris Huse left the organization in 1917 and moved to New York, where he worked for the Associated Press. He died in 1937. A few years after Norris moved to New York, Gene Huse bought out his brother’s interest. continued on following page

During Gene’s watch, the company continually

improved its facilities and upgraded its equipment. In 1919, he built the last addition to that plant and installed a press capable of printing 18,000 papers per hour. Gene Huse’s interests were many and varied and included building radios and giving them free to shutins in the early 1920s. He then built a radio transmitter and established station WJAG, which went on the air in the summer of 1922. Gene’s son, Jerry, joined the organization in 1950 after graduating from the University of Minnesota. He, like his father and uncle Norris, worked in every department prior to taking over as publisher in 1956, when his father became seriously ill. Jerry, too, expanded the company’s offerings by establishing an engraving department, which later became News Printing Company. He also designed and coordinated the construction of Radio Station WJAG’s current building. In 1963, the Daily News moved from its longtime location on North Fourth Street into a new building at 525 Norfolk Avenue. An addition to the building was completed in 1989. During the past 55 years, Jerry has directed ongoing improvements to the building and equipment, including the conversion to offset printing from letterpress. He also installed a new, larger press. Like his father and grandfather, Jerry developed a number of special interests dealing with the newspaper, two of which were design and typography. During his tenure, he has re-designed the paper a number of times and continually “tweaks” the typestyle to find the most pleasing and rea dable form. Through the years, the technology used to gather news and assemble and print the paper has continually evolved. Today, computers and the Internet are used to acquire some news and photos, and the paper is designed on computers using special software. News is disseminated to the public not only through the written paper but also through several electronic me thods. Now 85 years old, Jerry continues to serve as publisher of the paper that serves subscribers living in 22 counties in Northeast Nebraska. 80824

Canham Maytag Home Appliance Center started operating in 2005, but the store itself has been in operation at 1102 Riverside Blvd. since 1972 by just two previous owners.

“We offer top-of-the-line appliances, including Maytag, Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag, as well as service on nearly any brand,” said owners Bill and Jenni Canham. “Our service technicians, including three that are nationally recognized for their certifications on home appliance repair, regularly attend continuing education classes to keep updated on the latest technology. Our sales staff is more than able to direct our customers to the product that would best suit their needs in either the kitchen or the laundry room.” The Canhams bought the business from Steve and Sylvia Eynard in 2005, formerly Eynard’s Maytag Home Appliance Center. The Eynards had the business for 12 years after buying the store from previous owner Henry Kuhn, who ran the business since its inception since the 1970s. “From that history and dedication to the Northeast Nebraska area, we learned what it means for a business to serve its customer base with the latest technology in new home appliances, as well as the utmost care after the sale with service that will last a lifetime,” the Canhams said. “We are committed to stay in Norfolk and the area and continue to serve the Norfolk and Northeast Nebraska area for many years to come.” Canham Maytag Home Appliance Center strives to provide the absolute best customer service before and after the sale, and is proud to be a part of the Norfolk and Northeast Nebraska business community. Along with owners Bill and Jenni Canham, employees Cheryl, Sue, Gerald, Todd, Joe, Tim and Roger are dedicated professionals who care about doing their job well. “Whether it is home appliance delivery and installation, or repairing your appliances already in the home, our one and only mission is complete customer satisfaction. If you can break it, most of the time, we can fix it! We don’t do lumber, flooring, TVs or furniture. Home appliances are all we do. We are the home appliance experts of Northeast Nebraska,” the Canhams said.

Mid-City Stereo was founded in March 1976 by Doug and Twylia Speidel. From a modest start in downtown Norfolk at the corner of Third Street and Norfolk Avenue to their current “superstore” format at 1900 Center Drive, Mid-City has become one of the largest family owned furniture, appliance and electronics dealers in the Midwest. Doug and Twylia are now semi-retired, working three or four days a week helping their three sons — Jeff, Jason and Josh — make a smooth transition into the business. Son, Jeff Speidel manages the appliance department, including the custom kitchen design center. Son, Jason Speidel is in charge of home and car audio, home theatre and Direct TV sales and installation, flat-panel televisions and window tinting applications. Son, Josh Speidel works with the IT team for the Norfolk Co-owners Jason Speidel, Jeff Speidel & Josh Speidel Slumberland franchise and is the warehouse manager. Jeff, Jason and Josh not only manage the “superstore,” but they also work the “sales floor.” They stay in touch with their customers and tend to make friends out of former walk-in shoppers. Theirs is what could be called the “old-fashioned personal service.” The Speidel families’ winning formula at Mid-City Superstore and Slumberland Furniture is simple: Knowledge about their products, competitive pricing and service combine to make the vital difference. Plus, their ability to offer consumers such a wide variety and selection of name-brand products covering 70,000 square feet of showroom space. It’s apparent from the minute one walks into their “superstore” format that the Speidels are comfortable with their winning formula.

Being a family based company means a lot to the Henery family, owners of Michael’s Cantina and the Mint Bar in Norfolk. “Our success is based firmly on the fact we are a family based company,” Heath Henery said. “Customers truly get a warm, welcoming feeling — unlike some corporate-run restaurants. Our staff, many of whom have been with us for decades, embrace that attitude and it shows in a quality dining experience or an enjoyable night out on the town.” Heath Henery, who is the owner and operations manager for the Norfolk locations, said he learned much from his father, Michael, who is described as the “patriarch” of the businesses. Other family members include Brandon Henery, manager of Michael’s Cantina in Omaha, and Trevor Henery, owner of T. Henery’s Pub in Omaha. Cecelia and Hannah Henery — who are Heath’s daughters — serve as bartenders and assistant managers of the Norfolk locations and also help work at Thomsen’s Corner in Osmond, wh ich is also owned by the Henery family. The original Michael’s II restaurant started in 1978 at the 20th and L Streets location in South Omaha by Michael Henery and Heath was there on the first day bussing tables and washing dishes. “Through the years, we have had 11 different taverns and restaurants and currently the family runs five,” Heath Henery said. “We expanded to Norfolk in 1995, choosing the area because of our family ties to Neligh.” Michael Henery graduated from Neligh High School in 1956. Michael’s Cantina, 912 W. Omaha Ave. in Norfolk opened in 1995. The family took over ownership of the Mint Bar, 304 Northwestern Ave. in Norfolk, in 2004. For the Henerys, it’s all about hospitality. “We have enjoyed serving fine Mexican food to all of East and Northeast Nebraska for 33 years,” Heath Henery said. “Plus, we’ve carried on the heritage of the Mint Bar, a meeting place for friends dating back to 1938.”

These few words, perhaps best of all, sum up the philosophy in serving customers at Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust in Norfolk, Pierce and Hoskins: “What is in the best interest of our customers is always in the best interest of the bank.” That’s what has guided Fred Otten, who founded Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust and has seen it grow to over $500 million in total assets. Fred was born and raised on a farm in Northeast Nebraska. After serving in the U.S. Army, Fred graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1961 and began working in Kansas City for Swift & Co. in the pork trade. Fred moved back to Nebraska and started his banking career at First National Bank in Gordon, NE, as an ag lender. In 1971, after 10 years in Gordon, Fred came back to Northeast Nebraska, accepting a position as president of Commercial State Bank in Hoskins, which was a small bank with just four employees at the time. Nineteen years later, in 1990, Commercial State Bank opened a loan production office in Norfolk to better serve the needs of the Norfolk market. In 1993, to meet the growing demands of the public, Elkhorn Valley Bank was chartered as a full-service bank. Commercial State Bank and Elkhorn Valley Bank merged in 1997 to form what is now known as Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust Co. In the years following, through their partnership approach to banking and by building solid, long-lasting relationships with their customers, Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust continues to grow and currently employs more than 80 individuals at seven branches in Norfolk, Pierce and Hoskins to service the needs of the local communities. Fred Otten continues as president of Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust, and he is joined by two sons–Jarvis, vice president and operations officer, and Aaron, vice president. The bank can be located on the Internet at www.elkhornvalleybank.com.

We have received so much local support from the community and will continue to offer the same great service, product and delivery for years to come,” Raun & Randy Matteo, owners said. These principles include the value of work, the importance of excellence and in tegrity, and the eternal worth of each individual. It is because of these principles that Warren Garage Door provides quality products and service uniquely geared toward customer satisfaction. Through the years, Warren Garage Door has grown from a company with two employees to a company with 15 employees. All four of Jeff and Carolyn’s children have worked for the business during Warren Garage Door’s history. As Warren Garage Door has developed, it has outgrown two former business locations. Warren Garage Door moved into its permanent location at 600 S. 37th Street, Norfolk, Neb., in August 2005. After more than 12 years, Warren Garage Door is still a local, family-owned business focused on Biblical principles. Jeff and Carolyn’s children and their spouses all continue to be involved in the business on a parttime basis. The Warrens also consider their great staff and technicians to be a valuable part of the Warren Garage Door family. “Thanks for letting our family serve your family.”

Appeara is in the business of making sure its customers look good — every minute of every day. And the family company has been doing so since its beginning in 1916. “Our customers benefit from the personal service of an independent, family-owned business as well as the capabilities, resources and expertise we’ve accumulated over the years. And, with our national buying power alliance with the CSC Network, Appeara provides these services at very competitive prices,” family members said. Located at 126 N. Third St., in downtown Norfolk, Appeara is an industrial launderer renting uniforms, floormats, towels, aprons, tablecloths and napkins. The company serves Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa. Appeara offers garments and uniform rental in a multitude of styles, colors and sizing. Janitorial supplies also are part of the company’s offerings. The business started as a family laundry that grew into dry cleaning, home laundry service and, eventually, the commercial laundry serving businesses and industry. At one time, Appear provided services for multiple nursing homes and two hospitals, but manufacturing and industry are a larger piece of the company business today. Bob Dudley is the owner, operator and general manager. His father, George Dudley, is retired but continues to serve on the company’s board of directors and as a shareholder. Bob Dudley’s sister, Jennifer Edwards, also is a shareholder and serves on the company board. Doug Dudley also is involved with Appeara. “Norfolk has been home for Appeara for 95 years. It is a great community to do business with. We intend to do business here for many years to come,” family members said. 79441

When E. A. “Bud” Blackburn started his manufacturing company in the basement of his old farmhouse in Royal, it represented the humble beginnings of what has turned into a long-lasting and successful family venture. Blackburn Manufacturing, which is now based in Neligh, got its start when E. A. Blackburn built the first machine to manufacture marking flags and sold his first 1 million flags to a soil conservation services district in Oklahoma. Formed as a family business from the start, all family members had a place in the business – whether it be operating machines, taking orders, general management or serving as a shareholder. And it continues to be a family affair today. “We continue to strive for lean manufacturing without sacrificing quality and the core beliefs from which we come from,” family members said. “The industry markets are constantly changing and we try to change with them and expand into new markets. Our novelty line of flags is a true example of this and the endless possibilities that are out there.” The company produces and fabricates small plastic flags attached to either wire or plastic staffs. The flags are used by construction, public works, utilities, landscaping, soil conservation, farming, forestry, gardening and landscaping companies to identify underground water, gas, electrical and cable conduits or pipes. The flags are also used to post signage and delineate construction areas. A new novelty line of “Say It Flags” can be used for decorating parties, advertising for special occasions or even garage sales. “We take great pride in our history, both as a family and as a business. We have very dedicated employees who work hard each day and give it their best to ensure that we are producing quality products and excellent customer service at the most competitive price for our customers,” family members said.

Since 1974, when Garry Murren purchased Western Roofing of Norfolk from Ed Allen, the emphasis on this family-run business is quality workmanship and service to customers. One important indication of that is that, earlier this year, Western Roofing was honored with Carlisle’s Perfection Award, which is awarded to less than 5 percent of contractors in the U.S. and Canada. Carlisle, which provides the roofing materials used by Western Roofing, bases the Perfect Award on contractors that have a superior warranty claim performance and a demonstrated commitment to the highestquality roof installations. Garry Murren, president of Western Roofing, said the Carlisle honor is one to be proud of. “Our company attained this status through the efforts of all of our employees,” he said. “They complete training provided by Carlisle and carry that knowledge with them on each job to assure our customers the quality workmanship they deserve.” Located on South Highway 81, Western Roofing has been in operation since 1952 and has been a Carlisle authorized applicator for the past 15 years. The company is family owned and operated with assistance from Garry’s wife, Pam, as secretary, and their son, Thad, as vice president. The list of companies and entities Western Roofing has done roof work for is lengthy, including Affiliated Foods Midwest, Norfolk GM Auto, Faith Regional Health Services, the Norfolk Public Schools and the Plainview Public Schools.

For 133 years, members of the Beckenhauer family have been involved in Beckenhauer Construction, Inc., of Norfolk. Here are those who kept and still are keeping the family legacy alive: 1st Generation: 2nd Generation: 3rd Generation: 4th Generation: 5th Generation:

William H. Beckenhauer Otto and Harry Beckenhauer Lowell Beckenhauer Buster Beckenhauer, current president Bill Beckenhauer, secretary; Joe Beckenhauer, treasurer; Erin Beckenhauer, marketing business development

Hermann Boeckenhauer and his sons lead a group of German settlers on their trek from Ontario, Canada, to Nebraska and first settled in Cuming County. The large families settled the area and developed farms to become the largest, far and wide. But William, Hermann’s youngest son, did not want to be a farmer. Since his first visit to Wakefield, he had admired the stone houses that were built from burnt bricks. After his wedding to Mary Litke, the 26-year-old man founded his own business on March 11, 1878, and Beckenhauer Construction was born. His first commissions were business, banks, courthouses and schools. He always traveled with his family to the place where the next building was to be erected. From the children’s places of birth one can realize that William had been putting up buildings throughout Northeast Nebraska: 1883 Wayne, 1885 Wakefield, 1891 Wayne and 1900 Randolph. Finally in 1909, the family moved permanently to Norfolk. Three of his sons, Rutherford, Otto and Harry learned bricklaying with him. Rutherford was the first to enter the firm as partner. After his premature death, Otto replaced him. When his father died in 1924, Harry became the second partner and the company continued under the name of Beckenhauer Brothers. The most prestigiously beautiful structure of that era was the YMCA building of 1913 in Norfolk. When Otto and Harry retired, Otto’s son, Lowell, continued the business for some years alone. In the footprints of his great-grandfather and grandfather, Lowell Jr. (Buster) followed. Today, representing the fifth generation, his children — Bill, Erin and Joe — are at his side. “Over our 133 years we have seen a lot of changes in construction projects,” family members said. “Back in the horse and buggy days, the family used to move with each project and stay until it was completed. Even 10 miles was too far to travel on a daily basis. Today we routinely work on projects that are over 100 miles away and don’t even think twice about driving there.” They add, “Technology and advanced construction processes have allowed us to take on more projects with less people and manage them better resulting in a well-done project. We don’t strive to be the largest company around, just the best. We are large enough to have the capacity to handle any project available to us, yet small enough to still care deeply about client satisfaction.” But the Beckenhauers stress the one thing that has stayed the same throughout the company’s 133 years in business: “Our commitment to hold to the standards of quality, reliability, integrity, safety and honesty to provide unparalleled service to our clients.” The company is located at 1901 Riverside Blvd., and is located at www.beckenhauerconstruction.com on the Internet. Pictured are some of the major projects the company has built over the years.

They call themselves “The Car Guys” and their focus is on their customers. “Our business starts with you, the customer. We are here to provide the best service and quality pre-owned vehicles in Northeast Nebraska,” said Mike and Suzanne Leffers, owners of 13th Street Auto Sales in Norfolk. Mike Leffers, who also serves as sales manager, has 20 years of experience in car sales starting in 1991. “In 1994, I opened Fireside Auto in Norfolk. In 2000, I moved to Denver and managed a Toyota and Lexus dealership. I returned to Norfolk in 2006 to become sales manager at Jerry’s Auto Sales,” he said. Now, he and his wife, who manages the business side of 13th Street Auto Sales, have their sights set on continuing the same level of service and quality that people have come to expect. Located at 1203 S. 13th St. — and at www.13thStreetAuto.com on the Internet — the dealership provides late model trucks, cars and SUVs, both domestic and imports. “And if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we can get it,” Mike Leffers said. Mike and Suzie Leffers said their goal is to provide services to make your auto purchase as easy and convenient as possible. “By offering bank financing with low rates, worry-free driving with service contracts and a complete line of products, we fit all the needs a customer may have,” they said. “Come and check us out and join all the other satisfied customers. There have been more than a few “natural fits” for the owners of Window World of Northeast Nebraska. Originally established in 1977 as Northeast Nebraska Insulation and Siding, and located at 307 E. Omaha Ave., Jerry Pospisil became the general manager that same year. Karla Frey joined the team in 1981 as office manager. 1996, the two had the opportunity to purchase NEN Insulation and Siding. “As the market changed and the demand for windows increased, so did NEN. Already having a strong siding business, we were now installing high-quality replacement windows,” Karla said. In 2001, a huge decision was made to join the nationally recognized Window World Company, which is the largest replacement window company in the nation. With a name change to Window World of Northeast Nebraska, it, too, was a “natural fit,” Pospisil and Frey said, “Now with factory direct buying power and a family of over 200 stores, we could offer the highest quality product for the lowest price. We also acquired a national support system not available to most small, locally owned businesses and their customers.” From the owners’ perspective, this is the best of both worlds — being associated with a large company but still being locally owned in order to provide “family driven service.” In subsequent years, growing pains were relieved by moving to a bigger building with a warehouse at 1504 N. First St., and adding Brent Frey — who had been installing windows for the company for the previous 10 years —as an operations manager in 2006. In 2008, Angi Frey-Kruse joined the operation to focus on marketing and customer relations. Having family work side by side has created a caring, hardworking, educated team. “We are here for you for the long run and can’t wait to help you make your family’s home a warm, efficient, beautiful place to be,” Jerry said.

NORFOLK DAILY NEWS, Monday, Nov. 21, 2011

It all was started long ago: 1961 in Madison, Neb., by a hard-working 37-year-old entrepreneur by the name of Martin Deets. He started his working career as a hired man on the farm of Herman Hass, his brother-in-law, straight out of eighth grade in Cuming County. Driving a team of six work horses to till the land at age 12 seemed “normal” to the young blond lad at that time. After a few years on the farm, a short stint in the armed services and attending classes at Business College in Norfolk, he began his business career. Martin met and married Norma Jean Major in 1951. Another try at farming in the mid-1950s, some over-the-road sales jobs, and then a position at the Kesting Furniture Store in downtown Norfolk from 1957-1961, motivated Martin and Norma — now with three young daughters and a fourth child on the way — to start Deets Furniture in Madison on September 1, 1961. Martin started out in a very humble fashion. With a $5,000 loan from a favorite uncle, he paid rent on an old department store building in Madison, an apartment for his growing family, bought a used delivery truck and some inventory that Martin said, “I had to spread out to make it look like I had something . . .” Things went well early on and the store grew into a favored place to buy furniture, floor coverings and draperies in the Madison County area. The 1960s also brought two baby boys into the family — Ron and Tim — who currently own and operate the Deets HomeStore. In 1976, a new warehouse/showroom was constructed one-half block east of the original location and both locations continued to be used. In the early 1980s, Ron and Tim came home to Madison to help run the store. Let’s just say there was a lot of learning going on at that time. The year 1987 brought more change to the Deets Furniture operation as another location on North Riverside Boulevard in Norfolk was added. By 1989, all retail activity in the Madison locations was ceased and all efforts were concentrated on the Norfolk store. A 10-year time span showed more learning and growth, which led to the thought of owning our own buildings and moving to a better location. In 1996, nine acres of land were purchased at our current location on South Highway 81 in Norfolk. A 71,000-squarefoot steel warehouse/showroom building was constructed, the Deets Furniture and Flooring operation moved and opened for business on October 9, 1997. In 2003, the Deets Family decided to be ‘Closed on Sundays to be with Family’.....this practice is still in place today and further exemplifies the core values of the Deets Family. In 2004, a 12,000-square-foot building was constructed on an out lot and the selling of value-produced furniture began. This operation, doing business as “Deets BUDGET Furniture & Mattresses,” employs five people and makes shopping quick and easy as the home of “Good Furniture. Great Prices!” Today, the all-new Deets HomeStore offers employment to 30 hard-working Northeast Nebraskans and features a furniture store, mattress store and floor covering store all under one big roof at the Deets HomeStore building on South Highway 81. To many of you reading this story, 1961 may seem like a very long time ago, but to a certain lady and gentleman named Norma Jean and Martin Deets, it probably seems like just yesterday.
