Welcome It is an extraordinary honor to announce that, during our 2012 season, the Norfolk Festival is embarking on the most exciting initiative in its history since Ellen and Carl Stoeckel opened the doors of the Music Shed in 1906. An anonymous donor has made a 2:1 challenge grant of $1,000,000.00 toward the preservation and restoration of the Shed. I hope you will be able to join us on Saturday, June 16, for a special cabaret evening with the music of John Pizzarelli as we launch the Music Shed campaign. We have an exceptional season for you this year. The centerpiece will be the complete cycle of 16 Beethoven String Quartets. These extraordinary works span the entire compass of human expression and collectively constitute one of the supreme artistic achievements of western civilization. At Norfolk this summer we will hear them all performed by three of the world’s finest string quartets – Tokyo, Artis and Keller – as well as by some wonderful young Fellows with a fresh perspective. We are also fortunate to host the extraordinary percussion ensemble – Amadinda from Hungary (Saturday, June 23). Their pulsating ethnic rhythms and spectacular presentation are unique. If you have never heard a percussion ensemble, this is where to begin and, if you are a percussion fan, you won’t want to miss it. Many of our favorite Norfolk Artists are returning: Robert Blocker, Richard Stoltzman and Boris Berman (Saturday, July 7); André-Michel Schub, Ole Akahoshi and Ani Kavafian (Friday, July 13); Peter Frankl (Friday, July 20); David Shifrin (Saturday, August 4); and Joan Panetti, Carol Wincenc and Ettore Causa (Friday, August 10). Baroque music comes to the Festival on Saturday, July 28, with Syoko Aki, Frank Morelli, Allen Dean and Wei-Yi Yang. I am especially pleased to celebrate the Benjamin Britten anniversary with one of my favorite works: his incredibly beautiful Serenade for tenor, French horn and strings featuring Dann Coakwell and William Purvis (Friday, August 3). That same evening will include Françaix’ hilarious little opera The Devil with Two Sticks conducted by Ransom Wilson. Much more information about our activities is available on our website norfolkmusic.org. Throughout the summer the site will contain features on our artists and the music they perform, as well as updates on programs, lectures and special ticket offers. If you can’t make a Friday or Saturday evening concert, it will be streamed on the website. Single tickets will be available for sale on the web beginning May 3. Of course you can call (860.542.3000) or email (norfolk@yale.edu) for subscriptions or individual tickets any time. Before closing I want to thank Dean Blocker and the Yale School of Music, the Battell Stoeckel Trust, and all the Norfolk donors and volunteers who have not only made the season possible, but also provided the opportunity to save the Music Shed. And a special thanks to Christopher Little whose photography is featured on the cover of this brochure. I look forward to seeing you all this summer. Bring the family (kids always come free at Norfolk), enjoy the spectacular natural beauty and, most of all, enjoy Music Among Friends. If you have any thoughts or questions, please don’t hesitate to call or send us an email.

Our Music Shed An anonymous donor has committed $1,000,000 in 2:1 matching funds towards the restoration of the Music Shed The Music Shed has been the concert hall of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival since our patrons, Ellen and Carl Stoeckel, opened its doors on June 6, 1906. The New York Times has described its beautiful redwood interior, modeled after New York’s original Steinway Hall, as an acoustic marvel. If it is going to continue to be home to great music for another hundred years, we must act now to save the Music Shed. A study completed by the engineering firm of Wiss, Janney, Eistner Associates in April, 2009, confirmed that the building will not survive beyond another decade without major repairs. And it must be brought up to 21st-century code for restrooms and public safety. As we work on raising the matching funds, thanks to the generosity of some wonderful Norfolk patrons, we have been able to engage one of America’s most distinguished preservation architects, John G. Waite, to oversee the project. Renowned acoustician, Lawrence Kirkegaard, will serve as sound engineer to ensure that the acoustics of the Music Shed we all know and love will be maintained and enhanced for future generations. Our goal is to preserve and protect the integrity of this extraordinary building and be certain it is accessible and comfortable for future generations of music lovers. The restoration of the Shed will include: Improved audience comfort: Environment-friendly, natural ventilation and cooling (normal air conditioning will crack the redwood interior) including restoration of the original cupola • Upgraded and enlarged restrooms • Seating refurbishment Upgraded concessions area • New Green Room for performers and audiences Renewed appearance and infrastructure: Revitalized landscaping and improvements in drainage New plumbing and electrical • New siding, roof, doors, windows and, where appropriate, finishes throughout New stoops, stairs, ramps and railings for improved patron accessibility Technology:

Modernization of the recording studio and broadcast facilities for video streaming Improved projection capability for Children’s and New Music Concerts

A New Music Studio Space: Added to the back of the Shed, this space will complement the Music Shed’s original aesthetics and architecture and provide state-of-the art rehearsal and backstage facilities Construction will take place in two phases so the summer concert season is not interrupted. There will never be a more opportune moment to embark on the mission of saving the Music Shed and ensuring that audiences and performers can enjoy this remarkable concert hall for another 100 years. Please join us as we launch the Music Shed Restoration Campaign at the fun-filled Cabaret Night with the music of the John Pizzarelli Quartet.

Music Shed Benefit

Join us for the kick-off event of our Music Shed restoration project We’ll turn our favorite concert hall into an intimate setting with candle-lit tables and elegant decorations. Wine and special hors d’oeuvres will be available. Music for the evening will be provided by New York cabaret star, Grammy®-nominated recording artist John Pizzarelli and his Quartet. Described as “Hip with a wink” by Town and Country magazine, John Pizzarelli has been hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” In addition to his annual residency at the famed Café Carlyle he hosts the nationally syndicated radio show “Radio Deluxe” and has given performances around the world. For himself he says, “Nat ‘King’ Cole is why I do what I do. We aren’t trying to copy him. His sound was singular and inspired. I’ve always said we’re an extension, a 21st-century version of what that group was.” Join us for this celebration of both the past and the future of the famed Music Shed. We know you’re going to love it!

Norfolk Listening Club Designed to be fun and engaging, the Norfolk Listening Club is an opportunity for both the experienced concertgoer and the classical music novice to enjoy an informal discussion of chamber music among friends, old and new. No background in music necessary - all you need is an active curiosity about music. Our aim is to satisfy your curiosity (or pique it further) and provide a deeper appreciation for the heart of the Festival’s programming: chamber music. For 2012 Festival Manager James Nelson has crafted a series of four distinct sessions during the summer and throughout the year, each offering something to enhance your listening experience: I’ve Got A Question (Live Music) - Our brilliant idea to let the audience interrupt the performance at any time to ask a question of the performers. Honest, it works! Music of Our Season (Recorded Selections) - Highlights from the upcoming summer season, with some hints at what to listen for. Inside Music (Recorded Selections & Live Music) - For listeners interested in expanding their knowledge of music by learning about the fundamentals of music composition directly from composers, performers and theorists. Exploring Chamber Music (Recorded Selections) - For the curious listener who wants to hear something old or new, but also different - consider it the listening equivalent of a book club. Sign up on the Festival’s website (norfolkmusic.org) or call us at 860.542.3000 to receive email notices of sessions.

Beethoven at Norfolk “Don’t forget his name – you will hear it spoken often.” – Mozart after hearing Beethoven for the first time

Why would we perform all the Beethoven quartets in one season? Because this year three of the world’s finest string quartet ensembles will be with us: Tokyo, Artis and Keller! And because, along with those of Haydn and Mozart, the quartets of Beethoven are the heart and soul of the chamber music literature! To the best of our knowledge, the entire Beethoven cycle has never been done in a single season at Norfolk. Performing all 16 of them over the course of a six-week festival is extremely challenging and only possible with three such superb ensembles and some wonderful student Fellows (Haydn’s fifty three, by contrast, would require at least an entire year). Collectively the Beethoven quartets provide a marvelous listening experience as well as an extraordinary musical excursion through the career of one of our finest composers. The six quartets, Opus 18, represent his early style, already unique but very much in the school of Haydn and Mozart; the three Razumovsky quartets, Opus 59, and the Harp, Opus 74, are masterpieces of his middle period; and volumes have been written about the late quartets (composed while he was completely deaf ) which stand at the pinnacle of western artistic achievement. We will hear them all presented in context. Haydn’s Opus 20 quartets (Friday, July 6), for example, are where they come from; Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet (Saturday, August 4) and Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon are among the innumerable works inf luenced by them. We hope you will enjoy this musical journey and find something new, or perhaps some deeper appreciation of music you are already familiar with. It is our promise that you will experience impeccably prepared performances of some of the greatest music ever composed.

“After this, what is left for us to write?” – Schubert after a performance of the string quartet, Op. 131

“After intermission … a performance of Beethoven ... brought out the mysticism, poetic reverie and wildness of the music. The Beethoven sounded like the most radical work in the program by far: unfathomable and amazing.” – Anthony Tommasini The New York Times

FAQ What is Chamber Music?

Chamber Music is played and sung with friends, among friends in intimate settings. Performing forces vary from a soloist to a small orchestra or chorus, usually one performer on a part without a conductor. The repertoire is the largest and most diverse in the classical music genre. Thousands of works, an entire world of music, are waiting for you to discover, hear and enjoy.

What Should I Wear?

Don’t let worrying about your clothing keep you from attending a concert! Your experience of the music is what’s important, so wear whatever makes you comfortable. We’re serious about our music but we’re still a pretty informal group. We have even tried to make Norfolk a “no-tie” zone, though there are a few holdouts. We do ask that you refrain from using strong scents, as they may be distracting to other patrons.

Are There Any Customs That I Need to Know?

No special knowledge of music or experience is needed to enjoy a chamber music concert, although we ask all our patrons to observe a mutual respect of each other and their ability to enjoy the concert. Talking over the music, tapping your feet so that others can hear you, rustling of the program book pages, or things of that nature are discouraged.

When Should I Applaud?

This is a question that worries a lot of people. Holding applause until the end of a complete work is a custom that evolved in the concert halls during the early 20th century. Prior to that time it was not unusual for audiences to applaud between movements or even demand, through their applause, a repeat of the movement they just heard. Most chamber music works have several movements, if the audience responds to a movement with excited applause, join in. The safest course is to wait until the performers face the audience and everyone is clapping.

When Should I Arrive?

It’s a good idea to arrive 30 minutes before your concert time. Then you’ll have plenty of time to park, peruse the program and prepare yourself for the experience. The Music Shed opens at 7:30 pm for our 8:00 pm concerts. The Box Office at the Music Shed opens at 7:00 pm on concert nights. A big part of the Norfolk concert experience is social - enjoy the grounds, have a picnic, meet some friends. Our grounds are open all day, and you’re very welcome to enjoy the setting.

What If Am Late?

In consideration of our artists and patrons, late seating will take place during the first appropriate pause in the program at the discretion of management. The Box Office will remain open through intermission.

May I Use a Cell Phone or Twitter During a Concert?

Please do not use cell phones, pagers or other personal hand-held devices during the concert as it’s disruptive to the other members of the audience. If you wish to maintain contact with the outside world during a concert, we provide a special seating area where your movements, tapping and the light from your device will not disrupt others.

May I Take Photos or Record the Music?

The use of all recording devices, including cameras, is not permitted in the Music Shed at any time.

May I Bring My Children?

Kids always come free at Norfolk! We welcome children to our concerts provided they are not disruptive to the other patrons. Due to the natural acoustics of the Music Shed, we ask that everyone, regardless of age, be able to sit quietly through a concert lasting two hours or more without disturbing other patrons or the artists. We also encourage you to bring your children to our Young Artists’ Performance Series. These programs feature mainstream chamber music repertoire in magnificent performances by the Fellows studying at Norfolk. While they are not programmed specifically for children, they have a less-formal concert environment.

Additional FAQs and more detail on those listed above can be found on our website.

About the Area Norfolk is the quintessential New England town. It is a weekend destination you will never forget, surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of northwestern Connecticut’s lush forests and rolling hills. When you are in the area, visit the quaint bed and breakfasts, indulge in gourmet dining, or go out for some of the best antiquing in New England. If the charming villages, country lanes and covered bridges of northwest Connecticut aren’t enough, the Berkshire Hills are only a step away. New York City and Boston are an easy 100 miles by car. Once you’ve experienced all we have to offer, we know you’ll agree that the region is music for the rest of your senses.

Especially for our Patrons Ticket holders of the Norfolk Festival receive special discounts to some of the area’s most idyllic accommodations.

Test Drive Norfolk For over 100 years, the Norfolk Festival has been presenting world-class concerts of Music Among Friends. We believe that there is nothing like the experience of a live chamber music concert in our beautiful Music Shed. To that end we want to share this experience with you, completely free of charge for your first visit with us. As a Test Driver you and your friend come to one performance of your choice as our guests and ‘try before you buy.’ Our hope is that you’ll enjoy the experience so much that you will come again. How does it work? Simply select the one performance you are interested in and complete the online registration form to request tickets. After the performance you will need to complete a quick online survey to provide feedback about the program and your experience. All regular season shows are eligible for Test Driving. Please visit our website for details.

Group Discounts For groups of ten or more we are happy to tailor a package that will help make your concert experience one to remember.

Young Adult Discounts The Festival is happy to offer discounts to young adults between the ages of 18 - 25. Tickets to regular season concerts are $10 each in all sections (based on availability). Interested in a subscription? Even with the discounted rates you will receive all the subscription benefits of regularly priced packages. A Friday or Saturday Series subscription (six concerts) is available for $65. Or, for a little more flexibility, you could also choose a Pick-5 Series ($50) or our popular Pick-3 Series ($30).

Kids Come Free! We strive to bring newcomers into the world of live classical music. Seeing children enjoying the concerts is always a great thrill. You never know where the experience may lead... a future music educator, performer, patron... Thanks to generous support from the State of Connecticut Office of the Arts, the Festival is happy to offer free tickets to any young person under the age of 18. Tickets are available in all sections. Each young person under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Subscriber Benefits In addition to single tickets, the Norfolk Festival offers five subscription packages:

The John Pizzarelli Quartet (6/16), Amadinda (6/23) and Norfolk Choral Festival (8/18) are not included in subscription packages or the Flex Pass.
