2.0 Introduction

The objective of this course is to provide exposure and introduce students to the requirements and procedures involved in workscope of architectural practices. It is aimed to facilitate the involvement of students in this professional field in order to develop an understanding on principles pertaining to the laws and regulations implemented on architecture-based matters such as architectural drawings, building construction and building services. Moreover, the students are also exposed to the process of receiving and completing a project starting from meeting with a client to the process of submitting buidling approval to the authorities. For certain projects, they are exposed to project management and how to create liaison with other consultants involved in the project. Generally, internship period provides an early preparation for the students to enter their working phase. It opens up an opportunity to learn and practise more in handling architectirebased projects by improving social, thinking and solving skills. Other objectives are stated as follows; 1. Provide understanding to students in completing documents conforming to rules and regulations stated by government. 2. Provide exposure to professional meeting/discussion with clients, consultants and other professionals in real working environment. 3. Educate professionalism in working and preparing documents. 4. Introduce students to the requirement of keeping logbooks and informative project documentation

3.0 Summary of Industrial Training 3.1 Job tasks and duties

BIA3007 Industrial training has greatly improve my skills, knowledge and experiences in working in a more systemtic and effective ways. For this particular project, I am exposed to photography works in Kuala Kangsar where heritage buildings are documented and analysed. Moreover, the application of software such as Photoshop and AutoCad are extensively implemented throughout the working phases. At the end of the internship period, we are planning to publish a book covering heritage buildings in Kuala Kangsar. 3.1.1 Site works and meetings In Kuala Kangsar, we are assigned to document primary data of heritage buildings/structures based on building inventory lists given. We need observe and take photos on details, structures, elevations and architecture.

3.2 Experiences gained and knowledge learnt

BIA3007 Industrial training provides new knowledge to complement the whole journey of an architecture student. Personally, I have learnt a lot on digital technology used in architecture field particularly software and efficient ways in documenting data for final report compilation for Kuala Kangsar local plan.

Throughout the process of completing the tasks during internship, I have brushed up my personal skills in embracing digital works such as AutoCad drawings and Photoshop skills in analysing data for the project. The similar application used during our studio works yet it enhances my skills even more. I have also been assigned to prepare slide presentation for liaison meeting with consultants and authorities using Microsoft Powerpoint. The workload is quite challenging hence, I have learnt on how tackle this task efficiently together with my teammates. Besides, Prof. Yahaya and APUDG

13

members have helped us a lot in guiding us throughout the working phases in terms of architectural terminology used in urban and heritage scopes and etiquettes in attending meetings. I also learn new knowledge in aspect of conserving heritage buildings in terms of the process of proclaiming heritage buildings till procedures in conserving them.

In a professional work, I understand that proposing a local plan is a serious plan which needs to consider many aspects of the town; infrastructure, heritage and more. During internship period, my interpersonal skills such as communication skills, team work and time management skills are also improved as we meet many professionals involved in the project including Kuala Kangsar authorities during liaison meetings. We encounter with villagers as well to retrieve primary data of the heritage buildings as the project concerns about Kuala Kangsar residents.

In conclusion, this internship journey provides a basis in learning on how to fit in working environment and encounter professionals/clients/relevant people in real working life. I accept this as a new experience for my embarkment in real life.

3.3 Software, tools and application used

Primary data collected during site visits in Kuala Kangsar is analysed and trimmed to be fitted in final compilation. Generally, digital software which are mostly used throughout the process are Photoshop and AutoCad. This includes job scope of trimming and analysing photos of heritage buildings, composing layout for the report, aligning data and photos and reediting photos. Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel are also used for data collection and production of presentation.

Besides, we establish a systematic way in managing and arranging data in which it can be accessed by each member online. In this sense, we use Google Drive to hold relevant folders as multiple data are shared. Task distributions are also arranged in a proper tabulation in the drive so it can be easily read.

3.4 Strengths and challenges

Throughout degree life, I am exposed to common tasks related to architectural knowledge; urban, site and design strategies. Yet, BIA3007 gives a new exposure of architecture in relation to heritage buildings. In my opinion, architects should have mere knowledge in dealing with heritage buildings as well as we refer to precedents of ancient architecture. This refers to manners in designing to respect heritage buildings, certain condition needed in conserving the walls and taking precedents of their tectonics. In addition, understanding this aspect together with Malaya history will be a plus strength of this placement. Personally, I am not aware on the significant of these buildings. It has awaken my nationalism spirit and awareness in embracing architecture. One of the challenges faced is that, at the beginning of the project, I need to equipped myself with preliminary details on Kuala Kangsar in which I am not really familiar with. Some of the facts also cannot be fully retrieved from browsers too. Therefore, one of the solutions is to find another supportive journals and books to substantially provide the knowledge. While during site visit to conduct local analysis and research, we also encounter problems in finding location of several individual buildings and mausolleums as they are not pinned in Google Maps. We need to find sources from villagers (old generation) to get the exact locations as they are more familiar with Kuala Kangsar history. My team put an effort to strategize on finishing the final report as there are many buildings to be covered on.

5.0 Project background

Pejabat Projek Zon Tengah PLANMalaysia (Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Desa) is undergoing a process of preparing a local plan for Kuala Kangsar 2035. The body which is responsible for the project as primary consultant is AJM Planning & Urban Design Group

(APUDG). Hence, it has assigned several sub-consultants for

designated fields to assist collection of data and information in the proposed site. Referring to the project, I have been selected to undergo an internship with Building, construction & Tropical Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment, University Malaya under supervision of Professor Yahaya Ahmad, sub-consultant of Building & heritage for the project. Generally, the jobscope is to survey, analyse and transfer data of heritage shoplots and individual buildings in Kuala Kangsar. Based on the analysis done, our team will come out with several suggestions/evidents to stregthen its intended Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) in order to nominate Kuala Kangsar as one of UNESCO heritage sites. At the same time, the analysis of data will be compiled in a report as a supportive evident for Kuala Kangsar local plan 2035 in terms of conserving heritage buildings. To summarise the whole jobscopes, we are given a list of 72 heritage buildings and 101 shoplots which are needed to be analysed and recorded to be fitted in final report. This analysis is important as supportive documents for Kuala Kangsar local plan 2035.

6.0 Conclusion

“Practice makes perfect.” Each student may have their own struggle in learning new things depending on their working environment. Yet, we have one ultimate goal; to improve ourselves in order to be better. Does this industrial training help me to become a better architecture trained student?-The answer is yes. I reckon it is a course which has a comprehensive objective for students to prepare for the next level. In my case, this training opens up an opportunity to learn professionalism in working in this field. It teaches me to be wiser and work hard in gaining skills such as documenting and composing. This is such a good experience to learn those skills. Hence, I am grateful to undergo the industrial training under Prof Yahaya’s supervision as I received more knowledge and exposure on conservation works of heritage buildings.
