Sunrise: 05:35 Sunset: 20:23

by Bianca Cole Yesterday NORJAM 2018 increased in size, as over 600 excited Cubs and Brownies from across the region came to experience the NORJAM

2018 magic for themselves. Even though the weather was dull in places, it did not dampen the spirits of everyone involved. Three years in the making with 31 staff supporting the event, it gives Cubs and

Brownies a taste of what’s to come in future years. The Cubs and Brownies in the Main Stage Arena for the Opening Ceremony were awash with excited anticipation and holding goodie bags stuffed with

badge, necker and activity map. As they ventured into the future through the zones, they had the most wonderful time experiencing all that NORJAM had to offer.

Campers of the future by Ger Hennessey and Sarah Paget “I couldn’t wait to get here this morning.” said excited Phoebe, 9, 1st Roydon Brownies, as the Cub and Brownie Day began. The activities continued in the Main Stage Arena after the Opening Ceremony. Some learned the NORJAM robotic dance, reached new heights at a climbing wall and sprang into action on the inflatables. There was also a hands on science demonstration. “We blew a giant rubber football into the air!”, said Alex, 9, from 1st Acle Cubs “then I tried the climbing wall”. “The dance was very active,” he added. Sam, 10, from 1st Harleston Cubs had been looking forward to visiting NORJAM for quite some time. “I’d rate my excitement as nine out of ten!” he said, “but then, when I got here, everything

looks expialadocious!” The 31st Norwich Brownies didn’t know that NORJAM was their destination. “We surprised them by bringing them here,” said Charlotte, their Leader, “they were a bit shocked to see how big NORJAM is!” Freya, 9, from the group tried the rock climbing. “It was really fun!”, she said, “some of the grips weren’t big, but I got all the way to the top!” In their down time many of the packs and units visited the shops to pick up some treats and camp swag. “I bought lots of badges,” said Ruby, 7, from 25th Norwich Brownies, “one for my uniform, and one for my teddy bear.” Throughout the day they also had the opportunity to visit two decades in time; in the sub camp the Cubs and Brownies sampled the best of the activities from each era represented. In wartime 40s they tried their hand at make-do-and-

mend crafts. Connor, 10, 17th Norwich Cubs really enjoyed making the peg planes, “I made my favourite - the Red Arrows”. In the 50s, Spud Guns won the show. “They’re really good!” cheered Layla, 7, 2nd Oulton Brownies. “It was hard, but I got one of the targets.” There were space masks, moon rockets, and spacehoppers in the 60s. There were glitter balls, and a chance to boogie away in 70s clothes. 80s took a trip to a galaxy far, far away with Lightsaber School. Arifa, 10, 5th Norwich (Ansaar) Cubs said: “We bashed a piñata and balloons with our lightsaber, whilst blindfolded. Everyone helped guiding me.” Meanwhile in the 90s there were crowds decorating Pog disks. We hope you enjoyed seeing all the young people getting the chance to experience what you’ve been getting up to at

Dedicated activities for NORJAM’s 00s With NORJAM 2018 well and truly underway, and everyone settled in we’d like to officially welcome all staff to the 00s sub camp. Thank you for being here to provide an amazing “Seven Days” to the participants. The sub camp office is located next to our Millennium Gate and will be staffed during the day for any questions and queries you have. The sub camp team are wearing black and

orange neckers. Tonight at Decades, prove you can “Shine” for NORJAM’s Got Talent at 7pm. From 8pm “Let’s Dance” as we’re going back to school for a disco. If you’re feeling more “Pure Shores” than “Rock DJ”, you can have a quieter evening in Eras, which is located next to staff catering selling hot and cold drinks with indoor and outdoor seating available.

Have you visited the staff chill out zone Rehab yet? Open most of the “Day and Night”, 8am to 11pm. We’ve got free snacks and drinks, sofas and bean bags if you need to relax and a selection of board games if you’re feeling competitive. The Lego table has gone down a treat and we will be judging all your creations with a prize for the best one at the end of the week. Pop them on social media

#NORJAMLego2018 or speak with one of the team to enter. Staff activities will be held in the evening if you can spare “21 Seconds” or a little bit more. Timetables are available in Rehab and will be shown on the notice boards as further activities will be added. Have you followed us on social media yet? If not, then “What You Waiting

For?” The staff sub camp is on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, 00s2018. Give us a follow to keep up to date with all the sub camp news. If you think you’re “Fallin’” behind with information, there is a noticeboard at the sub camp office near the gate and one in Rehab which will be updated daily with what’s on, general information and birthdays for the Staff Subcamp.

Happy times in Hawaii! by James Traynor When you think of Hawaii, you probably think of flowery leis, bright patterned shirts, beaches and coconuts. All of this was on offer at the 14-17 Night Club on Sunday night for their Hawaiian Beach Party. Tabitha, 14, from 50s

sub camp said: “There was a really good atmosphere, excitable and everyone dancing together. It had a real community feel. The beach balls kept getting thrown into the dancers which was funny.” Milly, 14, from 70s sub camp said: “It was really fun keeping the beach balls in the air and there was a big

deck chair to sit in. There was a great atmosphere - I’d recommend it to anyone.” Morjan is one of the DJs in the 14-17 Night Club. He was excited about how the evening was going after all of the planning he had done for it. The music set strikes a balance. He said: “Some songs

have a tropical theme, but also span the decades from 40s to 00s. Of course, there are some club classics in there too. We have a wide range of music.” Tomorrow is going to be our DJs in PJs night starting at 7:00pm. Come along in your pyjamas or onesies. It’s going to be brilliant.

Crafty talents to take home with you by Alex Richardson A barn bursting with laughter and energy is the place to go to fulfill all of your creative needs here at NORJAM 2018. With over 100 different activities to choose from, there is plenty to do at the Craft Warehouse, as the 50s sub camp found out. With a wide array of decade themed crafts ranging from 40s sock puppets to 90s bath bombs, there’s something there for everyone. Eleanor, 13, said: “I think my favourite has been the

candle making.” There are also some longer, more complex crafts available for members of Explorer Scouts and Senior Section including woodworking and patchworking. Toby, 15, said: “My favourite was definitely the wood burning”, with Gaby, also 15, adding: “It was something new and interesting, but quite challenging too.” Not every activity in the Warehouse is a craft though. It is also home to the Cambridge HandsOn Science (CHAOS)

Roadshow who have a variety of experiments to show throughout the week from pressurised water rockets to a scale suspension bridge. Connor, 10, explained: “I really liked investigating the aging of the wood and the different ways it had grown.” The Craft Warehouse is home to the woggle workshop, where you can see their collection of historical jamboree woggles and even make your own. Amberly, 14, said: “I really enjoyed making the woggles because I’ve never had one before, it was cool.”

Under the boardwalk by Bradley Hirons Another activity nestled inside the Barns is the amazing Boardwalk Arcade. Activities range from old-school carnival games such as tin can alley, hooka-duck and coconut shy to the more modern Zumba, Aeroball and a silent disco. There is no shortage of out of tune singing. The participants of the 60s sub camp enjoyed the wonderful activities on offer yesterday morning. One of the most popular activities in the arcade was the looping bike. “It was a bit strange because instead of completing the loop forwards, I’d built up enough momentum to go round backwards. I could feel my pulse through my headband as I reached the top,” exclaimed Edward, 16, from Great Ellingham St James’, Hunters ESU, who was the first young person of the day to complete the loop. Nicole, 11, from 1st Fressingfield Scouts said: “I have enjoyed the Game of Cones. I am very competitive but also enjoy working as a team so this gives me a

chance to beat people and also work with someone too.” Ross, 13, from 34th Kingsthorpe also enjoyed the activity saying: “I had fun on Game of Cones, however it is extremely tiring.” The Game of Cones is a physically demanding activity, in which participants must run around the course, pressing the top of large traffic cones as the lights on top of them turn on. In the Arcades you can compete either in pairs or go head-to-head with one of your friends to see who can turn off the most cones. As well as carnival games and fun games, the young people also experienced Zumba, a drum workshop, giant board games and a Punch and Judy show every 30 minutes, so they could relax in the 100 deck chairs the Activities Team have acquired. Both Leaders and young people were taking part in the Zumba, and both seemed to be keeping pace until it came to doing The Floss dance - then half the group were baffled and confused!

GoGo into Norwich and discover the hares... by James Traynor If you were a member of the public recently in Norwich, the chances are you will have seen one of the 50 hare sculptures dotted around the city as part of the GoGoHares project.

This week, you are even more likely to see one of the over 200 Scouts and Guides in yellow 80s sub camp neckers rushing around looking for hares. We bumped into Lydia, 15, and Bridget, 17, and their friends on Gentleman’s Walk in Norwich. They said they “loved having the freedom to go and see what we wanted and explore the city and see its sights as well as the challenge of finding the hares.” They found all 13 of the hares on the NORJAM 2018 challenge, as well as plenty more on top of that and also some of the 164 baby hares, called leverets. “Some of them were clustered together and were easier to find, but some were spread out and hidden, which was all part

of the challenge.” We found Abi and James, 16, sat down chilling out beneath the Castle with their friends. They are from Solihull and had not been to Norwich before. They said: “the Norwich people are very polite and the city has nice scenery.” Their favourite hare, the ‘Heptahare’, was covered in 50p coins. “We also like ‘Hare Comes the Sun’ because it has a cool name.” The hares will be on display in the city all summer and are going to be auctioned off in October to raise money for Norfolk charity, Break, supporting vulnerable young people. For more information visit gogohares.co.uk, and share a picture with your favourite on Twitter and Instagram @NORJAM2018.

Time to pause, reflect and eat yoghurt by Alex Richardson Sunday evening offered Scouts and Guides from across the NORJAM site the opportunity to join together in a celebration of reflection and renewal. “Scouts and Guides are weird” were the first words spoken to the crowd by Nick, from Norwich Youth for Christ, during his unity themed reflection. And given some of the activities that followed, it could be rather difficult to disagree with him. A team based human structure challenge resulted in Scouts and Guides forming towers and

shapes, some of which had a bearing of resemblance to their intended design. A blindfolded yoghurt eating ‘Challenge of Doom’ on the Main Stage resulted in as much yoghurt on the floor as in the participants’ stomachs. These challenges demonstrated a more important point - despite our differing backgrounds, interests and personalities, Scouts and Guides are able to work together to overcome any challenges they come across. And whilst we might feel overwhelmed and tempted to withdraw, it is in our nature to form these

groups and communities. Following this message was a video and dance performed by the Main Stage team, giving everyone time to reflect. Ellie, 10, from the 60s sub camp said: “My favourite part was the dancing with the red petals.” Abria, 10, who is also staying on 60s sub camp said: “I really liked the costumes they were wearing.” Finally there was the opportunity for everyone to renew their Guide or Scout promises, to remember and reflect upon the pledges we made when we were first invested.

Keeping safe with a smile by Lucy Carter Today we caught up with one of our Security Team members to gain an insight of how hard they are working on keeping our campsite safe. As we were approaching the main Bawburgh gate, security members were busy checking Leaders and visitors in and out of NORJAM 2018. At the gates we found Matt, 18, also known as Peanut by his fellow Security Team. What drew you to the NORJAM Security Team? I’m mainly here to complete the residential part of my Queen Scout Award and the Security Team seemed like the perfect fit to achieve this. What’s the best thing about finishing a shift? Probably sleeping after long night shifts.

How do you keep the fun in the role of Security Team Member? As we patrol the site we have our own grading system of the sub camp and group gates. If you want to know who’s winning come find us on patrol! If you were not on the Security Team what team would you like to be on? The Media Team!

How many NORJAM’s have you been on? It’s my first time! But I would certainly come back, I’m loving the generosity, comradery and atmosphere of the site and people. What’s the funniest thing you have seen at NORJAM 2018? A massive inflatable dinosaur and a yellow submarine walking around the site as I was on patrol.

THE EMPORIUM SPECIAL OFFER

What makes NORJAM special for you? Being a security member does come with some benefits, kind leaders have been stopping at the gates to give us little treats such as chocolate to get us through the shifts. So that’s what our Security Team members get up to when keeping us safe, it can be fun as well as hard work.

We hope that you have all settled in to the Jamboree and have enjoyed the first few days, and are looking forward to other activities in the week ahead. On Sunday evening we had our quiz and it was amazing to see so many of you there! You all did a fantastic job in answering some very difficult questions. We hope that we have tested your knowledge and you have learnt more about the 40s. We would like to say a massive well done to ‘Lou Lou’s Angels’,

winners of the quiz, and ‘Tug Tug Yank’ (like the Toilets), winners of the Leaders quiz. And thanks to Annie, Bethan and Rosie for running both quizzes! A few of the team headed down to the Main Stage to get our groove on, on Sunday night. We couldn’t help noticing that some of you really knew how to dance. Special mention to Ben, Toby and Edward from 1st Dereham Scouts for their awesome moves. We have all had a lot of fun running crafts and various other activities for Cub and Brownie Day. However, after a full day of cotton reel tank

making, no one has managed to make one that fires over 10cm. If you can do better, come along and show us how its done! It has been lovely to see you all smiling around the sub camp. Carry on enjoying the photo cut out and our selfie board, which is in our crafts tent - make sure you have yours done! A massive well done to Calum for receiving the “best use of the clip board” award from Lichfield District Explorers! Happy 16th Birthday to Niamh Hopper from the 1st Beacon Hill Rangers!

80s

by Eilish Brogan and Gail Robinson During the Cub and Brownie day the theme within the 80s sub camp was Star Wars. This gave our Leaders a wonderful opportunity to dress up and become most of the characters from the Star Wars films.

The Cubs and Brownies made key rings, door signs and pencil toppers on the sub camp, as well as having lightsaber training - lots of Luke Skywalkers in the making! All sub camp activities continue to be going well with plenty of visitors doing the Camp Chiefs

Heritage Challenge badge. Sub camp participants can still make key rings, decorate a cup to take home and decorate a biscuit to eat right now! Today’s theme is Pop Stars, so you may see Madonna or the stars from Fame out and about across the campsite. Contingents

Scotts, both meeting in 2003. This is of course not forgetting the most famous 90s family, the Mario family from Tasburgh Scouts and Explorers, who we were fortunate to be visited by. A massive congratulations to Kate Way,17, from Tasburgh Explorers, a Beaver Young Leader, for being awarded her Young Leader belt! This comes after months of hard work completing all of her modules and missions. Steve Martin (District Commissioner) had this to say on awarding her belt: “It’s a great honour to award this belt, and is well earned. It’s not something I get to do often so this makes me really proud to award this.”

Kate said her favourite moment of her training is making new friends with like minded people, and being able to give something back to the young people. Do you have any awards/ presentations happening this week? Pop into the sub camp office and let us know! Our sub camp challenge for our contingents is an interesting one; each of our groups has been given a Tamogotchi to love and care for until the end of the week. Credit will be given for interesting names, locations visited with the Tamogotchi and anything surprising they get up to, ideally with photographic proof. How far can you (and not your leaders) level up?

If we cast our minds back to 2014, we were very lucky to witness Chris proposing to Kerry on the main stage! Now Mr and Mrs Lain are back again working as staff, after tying the knot just a few weeks ago on the 14th July 2018. They’re good friends with 4th Gillingham, who along with all of us at the 90s would like to wish them all the best for their married Scouting life together. After hearing about this it got us thinking whether there are any other “NORJAM families”? We ourselves have another 2 within our staff team, the Braziers and the

by Joshua Windsor 5,4,3,2,1! BLAST OFF, to the 1960s space theme that hundreds of Cubs and Brownies took part in yesterday.

Our sub camp visitors zoomed to the moon while they learnt about the first moon landing in 1969. The first astronaut that landed on the moon was Neil

Armstrong; therefore we represented this in our space themed day. Our whizzing activity team have spent a long time planning and organizing these activities and out of

this world decorations to keep the excited Cubs and Brownies entertained. The wonderful 60s activity team also made their own homemade astronaut costumes, they definitely looked the part. A big thank you to Rochelle, Caz, Jenny and Kate for their dedication and hard work in organising the activities and to anyone else who helped, it is all much appreciated. On our sub camp

www.norjam.org.uk there are loads of activities for you to try including, Stomp Rockets, why not build your own rocket and then put pressure onto these and watch them blasting off to space? How far did yours go? Some of the Leaders visiting the sub camp told us they had enjoyed the day. Alex, 1st Roydon Brownies said: “It was really good! Good experience for the Brownies preparing them for their Guiding future.”

We’re four days in and loving it! On Sunday night the Thai contingent performed a dedication to celebrate the Queen of Thailand’s birthday. It was amazing to see everyone turn up to watch a special moment. Regardless of the language barrier, the interaction was brilliant and we were most impressed by all of the dancing and flossing! Also, on Sunday night we saw the first heats for the Hungry Hippos contest. Well done to everyone who entered and congratulations to Hertford Explorers for getting through to the

final on Thursday. Yesterday was Cub and Brownie day, and it was fab! We started the day dancing the YMCA whilst the Cubs and Brownies arrived, shout out to all the contingents that got involved too! They then got crafty in the activities tent making disco ball key rings. In true 70’s style they got to bounce around on the space hoppers. We had the 2nd Hellesdon Brownies with us, Maisie, 8, said her favourite part of the day was the shopping! Rose, 8, also loved the shopping and bought a cute teddy bear from The Emporium! Maisie, Milly and Jasmine enjoyed making the glitter ball key rings and

loved dressing up and dancing on the disco floor! The Cubs and Brownies got the full NORJAM experience and are excited for the next one, hopefully we will see some of them as Scouts or Guides!

Our sub camp contingents spent the day at the circus, watching the show and also learning some circus skills of their own. It was impressive how quickly they picked things up!

Another day at NORJAM complete and it’s just getting better! A huge thanks to all the Scouts and Guides who were extra nice today to our younger visitors, it was lovely to see!

A Canadian Journey

50s

The 50s sub camp wants a huge welcome to our Canadian contingents, who wanted to share their journey to NORJAM. Our Canadian contingents left home on 31st of July and landed in Heathrow on 1st August. After a long journey they set off for London’s city centre to explore London’s biggest attractions.

The group Leader explained how they had to learn how to use the tube for the first time and how it was a challenging experience. On top of their tour they also visited Gilwell – the UK Scout headquarters. The UK camping weather is easy for the Canadians, as they have camped in extreme weathers

such as snow at -25 degrees. On 11th August all eight contingents successfully arrived at NORJAM and are now all settled in ready to enjoy their experience. Everyone at camp loves a bit of cake, and over at the 50s sub camp it’s no exception. One Leader from 2nd Cherry Hinton Guides/6th Norwich Guides made this

amazing cake for the participants to enjoy for their pudding. I’m sure you will agree it looks fantastic and every last crumb was enjoyed! The activity tent at the 50s sub camp has been buzzing with visitors who were able to enjoy activities such as woggle making, magic eyes, key rings

and badges. We also provided the opportunity to complete part of their Camp Chiefs’ Heritage Challenge badge by playing a tune using hand bells and showing a leader how to make a sling using a reef knot and their necker. The hand bells will be available daily until 12pm.
