THE VIEW
No slip-ups Sooners’ still-good season can’t afford another loss he difference between an excuse and an explanation? It may only be a matter of semantics and a long time ago all of us knew where Bob Stoops stood. Excuses? He didn’t make them. Explanations? They sounded too much like excuses. For several seasons now, if the Sooner coach hadn’t shelved his old philosophy, he had at least changed tone. Seeing the media as an adversary, his new tact became to defend his team, to the point of appearing out of touch. Once, he walked a fine line, not embarrassing comrades, yet not asserting things were up when they were down. Even this year, there’s still been no explanation for OU dedicating itself to offensive balance and using the fullback position to it. No deficiency was ever

admitted. The fix just happened to happen. So Stoops will do as he does and he has since, being certain to reiterate that OU’s losses have come to the Nos. 2 and 3 teams in the nation the way Kelvin Sampson used to tell us his record. Also, there has been the “judgment calls” monologue following the Notre Dame loss. It’s not that he’s wrong, it’s just that he’s at odds with the old Stoops, who might have said something about how you can’t be in a position to let a tough call be so meaningful No huge issue has been • See HORNING Page 14

THE BIG STORY: MA K E-UP TEST
Last season looms large A year ago at Waco will be a part of today in Norman By John Shinn Transcript Sports Writer
Some say bad memories should be buried. Others believe forgetting past mistakes only leads to future mistakes Oklahoma’s 45-38 loss to Baylor is a bad memory. The Sooners gave up 485 passing yards with the last 34 coming on Baylor’s go-ahead touchdown pass with 8 seconds remaining. OU safety Javon Harris described which category he fell into earlier this week. He was asked when was the last time he watched the game. “Today,” he said on Mon-
day. “I was watching it in class. I shouldn’t have been, but I did. I’ve watched it a lot of times. I watched it on Sunday in the ice tub.” Today’s meeting with the Bears (4-4, 1-4 Big 12) at Owen Field is one the Sooner secondary circled on the calendar long ago. They are a group that experienced the peaks and valleys of the college football last season. The Baylor loss was about as low as it went. The 14th-ranked Sooners (6-2, 4-1) had never lost to the Bears before that day. “Last year was a crazy • See REDEEM Page 9
“Last year was a crazy game, the way it just went back and forth. We gave up a lot of yards and gave up the game-winning touchdown on the last play. It’s a lot of motivation for myself, for the defense, for the secondary.” Demontre Hurst OU cornerback

BAYLOR at OKL A HOMA: BRE A K ING DOWN TODAY’S G AME
Run it, possess it, get turnovers By John Shinn
Sooner running back Brennan Clay breaks into the open field earlier this season. He may get another chance today.

ack in August, the brutal part of Oklahoma’s schedule was believed to start today. The reason was the way the Sooners Five struggled things to against upwatch tempo John Shinn offenses last season. Well, Kansas State and Notre Dame obviously changed that thinking. The Sooners did as well with the way they handled Texas Tech’s up-tempo, spread offense earlier this season. Nonetheless, Baylor can

score a bunch of points and give up a bunch as well. Here are five keys for the Sooners to keep building late-season momentum today against the Bears. Run the ball: One of the
reasons, the Sooner defense has performed better this season is it hasn’t been on the field as much. Sure, it’s gotten • See WATCH Page 11

■ The health of OU running back Damien Williams will play a huge factor. If he’s healthy, OU has a big edge. Baylor can run the ball. Martin Glasco, Jarred Salubi and Lache Seatstrunk are all averaging over 4.1 yards per carry. Without Williams, OU will lean on Brennan Clay. He proved able to handle a heavy load last week.
■ Baylor quarterback Nick Florence isn’t going to win a Heisman, but the Bears can throw the ball. Florence has thrown 25 TD passes in eight games and Terrance Williams is averaging 167.5 receiving yards. Still, OU’s passing attack has heated up since Jalen Saunders entered the lineup. OU gets the edge because of its deeper pool of receivers.

SPECIAL TEAMS
■ This is where OU struggled at Baylor last year. But the Sooners are much better in the secondary this season. Big passing plays against the Sooners have been in short supply. They’re the only Big 12 team holding opponents under 200 passing yards per game. Baylor continues to struggle here and it’s unlikely to change today.
■ Kicker Michael Hunnicutt and punter Tress Way have given the Sooners an edge in nearly every game. The return units will have an impact today. Baylor’s at the bottom or near it in both kick returns and punt returns. The Sooners are among the best. Don’t be surprised if the Sooners get a return score in this game. They should have chances.
RUN DEFENSE
The Sooners struggled to stop Notre Dame and Kansas State from running the ball. Otherwise, they’ve stuffed everyone they’ve faced. The Bears have struggled. They’re one of only two Big 12 teams allowing more than 200 rushing yards per game. OU has the ability to make Baylor one-dimensional. Baylor’s defense doesn’t.
■
I N TA N G I B L E S
OU’s lost three of its last seven home games, dating back to last season. However, that won’t matter today. What will is the sour taste the Sooners have retained from last season’s loss at Baylor. This is a game OU has had its eye on all season. Everything sets up for an amendsmaking performance today. — John Shinn

Redeem: Waiting for chance • Continued from Page 4 game, the way it just went back and forth,” cornerback Demontre Hurst said. “We gave up a lot of yards and gave up the game-winning touchdown on the last play. It’s a lot of motivation for myself, for the defense, for the secondary.” That loss ended the Sooners’ national championship hopes and firmly exposed them as a team with defensive deficiencies. The secondary had real problem giving up big plays and the Bears exposed it. Some things have changed since that loss. Baylor doesn’t have quarterback Robert Griffin III anymore. His performance against the Sooners elevated him to the Heisman Trophy. He grabbed it and headed straight to the NFL. Kendall Wright, who had eight catches for 208 yards in that game is playing on Sundays, too. Baylor now has Nick Florence at quarterback. Some of the names on the offense have changed, but the Bears still lead the nation in total offense. The Sooners’ secondary
Aaron Colvin, left, and Javon Harris survey the situation. Both were on the field at Baylor last season, when the Sooner secondary failed to stop several big plays. Transcript Photo by Jerry Laizure
remains nearly the same. Harris was OU’s free safety that night. His struggles covering Wright are part of the reason he’s now playing strong safety. Tony Jefferson has moved from nickelback to free safety. Aaron Colvin has moved from safety to cornerback. Only Hurst, a cornerback, is playing the same position. All those moves were instigated by OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops. He remembers watching that game as well. Although, it was in a different environment. Stoops had just been fired as Arizona’s head coach.
“I was laying on my couch,” he said. “I was temporarily unemployed at the time.” He got his old job back at OU, in part, because of the issues exposed by the Bears. There isn’t a member of the Sooners’ secondary that doesn’t see today’s game as an opportunity for redemption. “We want to prove we’re a better team than we were last year,” Colvin said. The only way to do it is against a team like Baylor. The Bears still score a bunch of points by embarrassing defenses. The Sooners thought it couldn’t happen to
them. Last season’s result proved otherwise. That’s why Harris has watched every play of the Baylor game so many times he can call out the plays before they arrive on the screen. He wasn’t shocked when the questions started coming up earlier this week. “We all know what happened,” he said. “For me, it’s about going out there and proving people and their perceptions wrong.” Today, he gets his chance. Watch: Don’t be turning it over • Continued from Page 5 more stops. However, the time of possession has also helped. The Sooners are holding on to the ball longer. Continuing that trend today would help keep an explosive Baylor offense on the bench. Spread the ball around: Eight players had at least four touches and eight receivers had at least two receptions in last week’s victory over Iowa State. It was about as diversified as on offense as the Sooners have displayed all season. That should continue today against the Bears. The offense has been unstoppable when the ball is spread around the field. Frank Shannon and Aaron Franklin: Oklahoma’s freshmen linebackers have been mainstays in the Sooners’ dime package. Both will see extended playing time against Baylor. They’ll be out there because they’re a little smaller than middle linebacker Tom Wort and weakside linebacker Corey Nelson. Shannon and Franklin’s
Sooner defensive end David King tries to get to the quarterback against Iowa State last week. That could got a long way today against Baylor. Transcript P hoto by Jerry Laizure
speed and quickness will be essential against a Baylor offense that thrives on short crossing routes in the middle of the field. If these two tackle well, the Sooners shouldn’t have any problem slowing the Bears. If they don’t, an offensive shootout could ensue. Stay healthy: Left tackle Lane Johnson will likely play for the first time since suffering an ankle injury against Notre Dame. Guard Bronson Irwin has managed to stay in the lineup despite
an ankle injury that’s hobbled him since the Texas game. The Sooners need to have one game where they don’t have to patch together an offensive line for a period of the game. Even being shorthanded for a quarter could make a big difference. Turnovers: It’s been feast or famine for OU in terms of getting interceptions and fumble recoveries. The last two games have fallen in the famine category. A late fourth-quarter interception
by safety Tony Jefferson was OU’s only forced turnover the last two games. They could make a ton of difference against an explosive Baylor team that will move the ball. But here’s the main reason: When the Sooners don’t force a turnover this season they’ve won once and lost twice, with the victory coming in the season opener at UTEP. Baylor’s has turned the ball over 17 times in eight games. OU needs to get its share.

Who’s the quarterback? Cowboys went from Lunt to Chelf against K-State last week; what will they do today? Tune in to find out By Jeff Latzke AP College Football Writer
STILLWATER — It’s become a weekly ritual for Mike Gundy to step to a podium in the Boone Pickens Stadium press box and praise the play of his quarterback. All that changes is the name of the person who’s taking the snaps at the time. Injuries have turned the position into a revolving door for the Cowboys (5-3, 3-2 Big 12), and that won’t change leading up to today’s game against West Virginia (5-3, 2-3). Gundy said Monday that he expects starting quarterback Wes Lunt to split practice time with backup Clint Chelf this week before the team determines who will
play. Lunt had to come out of the Cowboys’ loss to Kansas State over the weekend after getting hurt. “I don’t think we know who our starter will be,” Gundy said at his weekly news conference. “I’m fairly confident that we’ll have Wes and Clint out there practicing and be in a situation that whoever we think gives us the best chance to be successful we’ll have in the game.” Lunt began the year as the starter, then injured his knee and was replaced by J.W. Walsh in the third game. The two flip-flopped again after Walsh’s season was ended by injury. That meant third-stringer Chelf had to come in after Lunt was hurt against K-State. Gundy does not com-

All three quarterbacks have kept Oklahoma State’s offense clicking. Together, they’ve made the Cowboys the nation’s No. 2 team in total offense, third in passing
and eighth in scoring. “I think it’s a credit to those guys,” offensive coordinator Todd Monken said. “I think those guys study the game. I think all of them are pretty squared away off the field. All of them really enjoy being over there helping decide what we’re going to • See QBs Page 13

Old Wildcat wants to beat KSU TCU coach going up against his alma mater tonight in Fort Worth By Stephen Hawkins AP Sports Writer
FORT WORTH, Texas — Gary Patterson figures he was known more for playing his guitar than anything he did on the field as a Kansas State player back in the early 1980s. During two years as a safety and linebacker for the Wildcats, Patterson played “a lot on scout teams, a little bit of special teams.” But it was also at K-State where he started his coaching career, as a graduate assistant in 1982 for the school’s first-ever bowl team. Now three decades later, with the third-ranked Wildcats undefeated and in the
thick of the national championship race, the Kansas native and TCU coach faces his alma mater for the first time Saturday. “It’s hard, because you love seeing, from their perspective, they’ve come so far and have an opportunity to be so close to playing for a national championship,” said Patterson, TCU’s winningest coach with 115 victories in his 12 seasons. “But also on our side of it, just try to get seven (wins). “It’s a dilemma,” he said. “But this is what they pay me to do.” TCU (6-3, 3-3) is in its inaugural Big 12 season and became bowl eligible with a double-overtime victory last
weekend at then-No. 23 West Virginia, the league’s other newcomer. With Heisman Trophy front-running quarterback Collin Klein, Kansas State (90, 6-0) has its highest BCS ranking ever, at No. 2 behind Alabama. The Wildcats are three wins shy of possibly getting into their first BCS national championship game. There almost certainly is no chance of that if they lose any of their remaining games: at TCU and at Baylor before the regular-season finale at home against Texas. “I’ll be on some post office wall if I win. I’ll be one person that can’t cross the state line,” Patterson said. “I used to say
once I cross the Kansas line, I knew I was within 30 minutes, somebody would help me. Now I cross the Kansas line, I need to not tell everybody I’m coming, except if you’re a KU fan.” Another twist is that this is the 10th game this season. In their 10th game a year ago, the Frogs won at then-undefeated Boise State and cost the Broncos any chance of a BCS berth. Patterson is apparently doing his best to make this game the same as any other for his players. “He hasn’t really spoke too much on it,” cornerback Jason Verrett said. “He’s just ready to play.”

QBs: Oklahoma State has gone three deep; but who’ll get the most snaps today • Continued from Page 13 call during the week.” Chelf, a senior, had been first-round NFL draft pick Brandon Weeden’s backup the past two seasons and only got to play in mop-up time previously. He was
beaten out by Lunt, a true freshman, and Walsh, a redshirt freshman, during a three-way competition in the spring. He threw for 233 yards and a touchdown after replacing Lunt about 5 min-
utes into the third quarter. “He’s been a big part of what we do, even though it hasn’t really maybe been on the field. He’s just been waiting for his opportunity, and I’m sure it’s been frustrating for him and I’m sure he’s
looked at me like, ‘See, I told you I was the guy,”’ Monken said. “And that’s what he should do. Guys that get an opportunity and play well should feel that way. You want your guys to feel that
way. Now, just go out and play that way.” If nothing else, this season has proven that it really was a close competition for the starter’s job before Lunt won it. “I’ve never doubted that
Clint had the ability to play at this level. We just made the decision, based on a small sample size, of who we were going to go with moving forward,” Monken said. “That doesn’t mean you’re always right.”

and created a better mousetrap using Trey Millard as a weapon, and because everybody talks up this team up as one that’s fun to be around and does things the right way, the season can still end well. The best way to judge the season, really, is how it leaves the Sooner Nation feeling, and if OU can keep on winning the Sooner Nation should be left happy and (mostly) content. The sticking point? No more losses. Landry Jones has quit making the huge mistake. Josh Heupel’s gameplanning has removed the blinders. New faces have been great additions. After not being nearly as fun to root for the last couple of seasons, this team tugs at your heart. It has all the side stories that tend to run parallel with a huge and successful campaign. Or, a good one. This is still a good one just as long as OU keeps winning. Good luck. Clay Horning Follow me @clayhorning cfhorning@normantranscript.com

THE WAY WE SEE IT
Horning: Just win • Continued from Page 3 made of it here. Stoops has been doing this a long time, dealing with the same cast of characters a long time and one gets tired of hearing others chirp about things they can’t possibly understand as well as one understands. He may be able to avoid live calls on his coach’s show, but he must still talk to his media tormentors. It can lead a guy to be short, combative and wrong (though give credit were it’s due; Stoops explanation of his tolerance for odd haircuts, tattoos and piercings was like a breath of countercultural fresh air). The only place where Stoops’ new fondness for explanations is really relevant is in the corner he’s painted himself into. Stoops is right about many things. The losses were unfortunate and came in winnable games, yet who they came against remains meaningful. Because discipline issues have faded and because the Sooners came-to-Jesus offensively
